The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, looking at what The Wedge has in store for the next couple of weeks.
So, it's a pretty slow start. Not much happening for the first few days. The wind is all cross-onshore and messy, and the swell is just not putting on a show. That Saturday and Sunday are pretty forgettable, but hold on, things start cleaning up from Monday morning when the wind goes glassy. That's a massive step in the right direction.
Now, the one you really want to pencil in is Tuesday, July 21st. The morning session is the absolute gem. It’s glassy, flat calm, with a clean 6ft swell rolling in from the southwest. The wave energy is really strong at (1496), and the period is a nice long 14 seconds, so you’re getting proper groundswell with power and shape. The water temp is around 59°, which is about normal for this time of year, nothing crazy. The wind is dead still in the morning. For The Wedge, that’s as clean as it gets.
Just a heads up, though. The Tuesday afternoon gets a cross-onshore breeze and the swell jumps to 8ft. That’s getting a bit big for beginners, and the chop creeps in. Wednesday the 22nd pushes up to a solid 10ft with strong energy (2427), but the cross-wind makes it a lumpy mess. That’s experts only, and it won't be pretty.
We get another good window on Thursday, July 23rd. The morning is clean with a light cross-offshore breeze from the SSE, and a nice 6ft SW swell running with an 11-second period. The combined energy is solid at (1413). It’s a proper clean wave, and the crowds are only *sometimes* there, so you’ll likely have a few friends out but not a total circus.
Then comes a really solid run from Friday, July 24th, through to Sunday, July 26th. This is the most consistent quality stretch. Friday morning is looking very, very good: a clean 10ft swell from the SW with a 14-second period. That’s massive energy in the water (3725). This is big, powerful stuff – only for experts. The wind is a clean cross-offshore, so it’ll be groomed. That’s the highlight of that second week for me. Saturday the 25th is still excellent, with a slightly smaller 8ft swell and clean conditions. Sunday the 26th has a beautiful 6ft SSW groundswell with a very long period of 16 seconds (energy 2231) and clean wind. That’ll have plenty of glide and punch, though at a beach break like The Wedge, a period that long can make it break a bit straight, so watch for the better lines.
After that, from Monday the 28th onwards, it turns sour. The wind gets messy again, going cross and cross-onshore, and the swell stays in the 6ft to 10ft range, but the conditions are poor. By the 29th and 30th, we’ve got strong wind and rain – definitely not worth it. It stays pretty rough right through to the end of the month and into early August, with the swell dropping almost flat on the 1st.
The call: The two sessions to really aim for are Tuesday morning, July 21st, and Friday morning, July 24th. Tuesday gives you a more manageable size with perfect glass, while Friday is bigger and cleaner for the experienced crew. Don't bother with the rest.
