Table - best surf conditions forecast for The Wedge over the next 16 days.
G’day, it’s Rusty here, and I’ve had a good look at what’s coming for The Wedge. This is a breakwater spot that’s real sheltered and picks up swell from the west. The water’s sitting at 59°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing weird there.
The first solid surf shows up on Thursday morning, July 9. We’ve got a powerful 10ft SW groundswell, with a period of 14 seconds, pushing a huge amount of energy (3037). The wind is SSE at 9 mph, a clean cross-off, so the face should be tidy. The combined energy is massive, but this is a very sheltered spot, and with that much size, it’s going to be heavy and pretty intense – pack your big board and be ready for a fight. The afternoon holds at 8ft SW with a 13-sec period and 12 mph S cross-off wind, still clean but the tide might be a factor.
Friday, July 10, the swell is still solid at 10ft SSW (2608 energy) in the morning, with a cross-off SE wind, but the wave comment flags marginal conditions – likely a tide issue. The afternoon drops to 8ft and the score drops off, so it’s a bit of a wait-and-see.
Saturday, July 11, is the first real standout. Morning brings 6ft SSW swell with a 12-sec period (1165 energy) and a glassy 3 mph SE wind – that’s about as clean as it gets. The afternoon picks up to 7ft SSW with light S wind, still clean. The combined energy is moderate, but the wind is perfect, so The Wedge should be running smooth and fun.
Sunday, July 12, is glassy in the morning with 5ft S swell, but the energy drops to 795 and the ride gets ordinary. The afternoon is small and poor. Monday, July 13, is tiny with 3ft SSW and glassy morning, but it’s not really worth paddling out for.
From Tuesday, July 14, through to Wednesday, July 15, the wave heights drop below 3ft and the wind goes messy – a real gap of a few days where it’s not worth it. Then Wednesday arvo picks up a bit to 5ft from the WSW with a long 18-sec period (1578 energy), but the wind is cross-on, so it’s a bit raw.
The next big standout is Thursday, July 16. The morning delivers a thumping 12ft SW swell (4550 energy) with a 14-sec period and a strong 16 mph SSE cross-off wind. That’s clean, massive, and only for experts – the energy is just mental. The afternoon is still 10ft SW with the same cross-off, but the wind is stronger.
Friday, July 17, morning drops to 8ft SSW (1813 energy) with a light 6 mph ESE cross-off – clean and much more manageable for an intermediate. The afternoon goes cross and small, so make the most of the morning.
There’s then another gap of small, poor conditions from Saturday, July 18, through to Tuesday, July 22. On Tuesday, July 22, morning is glassy with 6ft SW swell (1911 energy) and a 12-sec period – clean and fun, a real redemption lap. The afternoon jumps to 10ft SW with a 15-sec period (3671 energy) but a light cross-on, so it’s a bit chopped.
The final absolute standout is Friday, July 24. The morning brings a 8ft WSW swell with a 12-sec period (2518 energy) and a light SE cross-off – clean, punchy, excellent. The afternoon is the pick of the whole outlook: 12ft SW with a 15-sec period, and a massive 5423 energy, with a light SSE cross-off wind. That is a world-class session for experienced surfers at The Wedge – clean, powerful, and long-period groundswell. The crowds are sometimes there, so you might have some company.
If you’re a beginner, anything over 5ft is big for you, and over 8ft is expert-only. These long-period swells (over 11 seconds) will make The Wedge, a sheltered breakwater, really bend and pitch – it’s not a beach break, so it should handle the energy well. The short gaps in the second week are small and scrappy, but the 24th looks like a dream.
Rusty.
