The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for The Wedge over the next couple of weeks.
First up, we’ve got a bit of a slow start. The early part of the run is a bit of a mixed bag with some onshore junk, but it’s not all bad. The water’s running a bit colder than normal for this time of year, sitting at 57°, so grab a thicker suit if you're heading out.
The real standout window kicks off on Thursday morning, July 16th. That morning is looking glassy with a clean 8ft swell out of the southwest, period around 13 seconds. The wave energy is already pumping at a solid 2381 (moderate to strong), and with those conditions, it’s going to be proper. The Wedge is a breakwater, so it’s very sheltered, and when the wind goes glassy like that, it’s a treat. That’s your best bet for the first few days. The afternoon gets a bit cross, so get it early.
Friday, July 17th holds some clean, glassy surf too, with the swell dropping a little to 6ft in the morning, still from the southwest. Periods are still decent at 11 seconds. It’s not as punchy, but still a fun, clean session.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. If you’ve got patience, the real beast shows up around Tuesday, July 21st. A massive 16ft southwest swell rolls in, with a very long period of 15 seconds. The energy numbers are absolutely huge – 9762 (very strong). That’s a lot of power, but it’s also a lot of water. The wind is cross, not clean, and this thing is going to be a heavy, straight wall at a breakwater. This is strictly for experts, and it’s a bit on the wild side. The following day, Wednesday, gets blown out with fresh 30 km/h winds, so skip that.
The next proper standout, and the one I’d circle on the calendar, is Thursday, July 23rd. Morning sees another 16ft southwest swell with a 16-second period, but this time, the wind is clean cross-offshore from the SSE. The energy is off the charts at 12898 (extremely strong). This is an excellent, powerful window for experienced surfers. The conditions are clean, and the swell is lined up. The afternoon stays just as good at 16ft, so you’ve got a full day of heavy, clean waves. Friday, July 24th is still excellent, with a drop to 8ft, but still clean cross-off winds. That’s a top-tier session for anyone who can handle the size.
Later in the run, Sunday, July 27th morning looks clean at 6ft, and Tuesday, July 28th has a solid 10ft, but the winds pick up a bit. The long-range stuff looks promising, but remember, it’s a bit less certain the further out you go.
Bottom line: Don’t stress the early rough stuff. The Thursday morning glass-off is the pick of the first week, and the 23rd of July is the big-ticket day for the experienced crew. Crowds can be an issue at The Wedge sometimes, so keep that in mind.
Stay safe out there.
Rusty.
