The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks for the Cape.
First few days are a bust. Tuesday the 1st has a tiny 1ft east-south-east swell with cross-off wind and hardly any power. Wednesday the 2nd goes glassy but flat – barely a ripple. Thursday and Friday are a mess with strong cross-onshore wind and junk.
Then a big pulse of size but poor quality. Saturday the 5th has 5ft to 5ft east-south-east swell, but straight onshore wind and lumpy. Sunday the 6th gets bigger – 7ft to 8ft easterly swell – still onshore and messy, with strong energy. That’s only for experts, and honestly it looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddling.
Here’s the standout. Monday the 7th. We get a 5ft east-south-east swell with a period of 8 to 9 seconds – moderate energy – and cross-off wind from the north-north-west in the morning, clean. The afternoon is cross-off from the south-south-west, also clean. That’s the pick of the whole period. Cape Infanta is inconsistent, so when it lines up like this, it’s special. Crowds are only sometimes an issue. Water temp is 61°, normal for this time of year.
After that it fades. Tuesday the 8th drops to 4ft with onshore wind. Wednesday the 9th is clean but tiny at 2ft to 2ft. Thursday the 10th turns nasty with strong onshore wind and short-period slop. Friday the 11th pumps up to 7ft east swell with onshore wind and strong energy – messy and blown out.
Saturday the 12th is another good one: 4ft to 5ft east-south-east swell with light offshore wind in the morning going glassy in the afternoon. Clean and lined up.
Sunday the 13th has a clean 3ft east swell with offshore wind but it’s small. Then from Monday the 14th through Wednesday the 16th it’s onshore, lumpy, and poor quality – not worth paddling out.
Best sessions are Monday the 7th and Saturday the 12th. If you’ve got time, make Monday the 7th your call.
Rusty.
