The Lowdown

Grab your board, let’s see what’s cooking at Strand (Pipe). This spot is exposed to the swell and prefers it from the SW, so it’s set up nicely. The water is sitting at 57°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – about 3° below average, so you’ll want a good wetsuit.

Right now, Monday morning is a write-off. We’ve got a messy 5ft SW swell with a 13-second period, but the cross-wind has chopped it up and the energy feels weak (644). It’s not worth paddling out for this.

Tuesday the 18th is where it starts to get interesting. The morning brings a clean 6ft SW groundswell, 12-second period, with a cross-off breeze from the SSE. The energy jumps right up (1691), and the conditions are excellent for experienced surfers. That’s a standout session – glassy-ish, solid, and punchy. Tuesday afternoon holds similar vibes at 6ft, though the wind picks up a touch.

Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th keep the swell going. Wednesday is a bit softer at 6ft with light cross-on winds, but Thursday morning is a gem: 8ft of SSW groundswell, 13-second period, clean conditions with a light cross-off breeze and energy at 1700. That’s expert territory – too big for beginners, but if you’ve got the skills, it’s a ripper.

Friday through Sunday (21st to 23rd) sees the swell drop back to the 4ft to 5ft range. The winds are a mixed bag – mostly cross or cross-off – but the energy is moderate (663 to 961). Sunday morning has a clean 4ft SW swell with good period (13 seconds), a light cross-off, and a very good surf rating. It’s not huge, but it’ll be fun and clean.

Into the second week, the action keeps rolling. Monday the 24th is mellow, but Tuesday the 25th morning brings back a clean 6ft SW swell with cross-off winds and solid energy (910). Wednesday the 26th morning is a real treat – glassy conditions, 5ft SW swell, and a very good surf call. That’s rare and beautiful, even if the energy is moderate (567).

Then we hit a bit of a lull. Thursday the 27th is small and weak (3ft to 4ft) with poor energy (212-352). Friday the 28th morning fires back up though – 5ft SW groundswell, 13-second period, cross-off wind, and excellent conditions for experienced surfers. Energy kicks up to 1368. That’s another standout.

Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th have some size but the wind is messy. Sunday afternoon sees 8ft SSW swell, but it’s cross-shore and choppy. Not the cleanest.

The best of the whole run looks like Monday the 31st morning. We’re talking 8ft of SSW groundswell, 14-second period – that’s a long, powerful groundswell – with a clean cross-off breeze from the SE. The energy is very strong (2530). This is expert-only territory, but if the direction locks in perfectly with the optimum SW, Strand will be absolutely pumping. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.

Tuesday the 1st of September wraps it up with a glassy morning and 5ft SSW swell – a calm, clean finish.

Overall, your standout sessions are Tuesday morning the 18th, Thursday morning the 20th, Friday morning the 28th, and the big one: Monday morning the 31st. Don’t sleep on that glassy Wednesday the 26th morning either.

Rusty.
