The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty, and I’m looking at the stretch ahead for Strand (Pipe).
First off, the start of the period is a bit of a bummer. The next couple of days are flat and messy, with a light cross-onshore breeze and poor surf conditions. The combined swell energy is weak (81), so you’re better off waiting.
The first real glimmer of hope comes Wednesday morning, the 15th of July. The swell is still small at 3ft from the SW, but the period is a massive 17 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell. The wind is glassy, absolutely dead calm, which means the waves will be clean and lined up. The energy is moderate (608), and it’s just a good sign for the day. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
The standout for the entire run is definitely Tuesday morning, the 21st of July. The swell is a solid 7ft from the SSW, with a 15-second period, and the wind is glassy. The combined energy is strong (2258), and the forecast is for excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers. This is the day to call in sick. The waves will be powerful, with long gaps between sets, so paddling out will be easier. The break is a beach and reef, so the long period will create some nice, orderly lines. Crowds are possible here, so get there early.
Another strong option is Sunday morning, the 26th of July. The swell is 6ft from the SW, 15-second period, and the wind is a clean offshore from the SE. The energy is strong (1551), and conditions are excellent for experienced surfers. This is a second standout, but it’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it.
There’s a rough patch from the 22nd to the 25th of July, with strong winds and poor surf quality. The swell is too big and the wind is howling, making it more of a kiteboarding session than a paddle session. The combined energy is high (1621), but it’s just messy.
After that, the 27th and 28th still have some swell, but the wind is variable and the conditions are marginal. The 29th of July morning looks cleaner again with a 3ft SSW swell and a cross-off breeze, but it’s not a headliner.
So, the best on offer is the 21st of July morning, hands down. The 26th of July morning is a solid backup. The rest of the window is a mix of waiting and dodging stronger winds.
Rusty.
