Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what's coming up for Strand (Pipe). It's been a bit quiet to start, with only small, messy leftovers over the weekend and into Monday morning – nothing to get out of bed for. The water's sitting at a fairly average 59° for this time of year.
Things start to turn around on Monday, 6 July. That morning it's glassy, dead calm, with a clean 4ft swell from the SW and moderate energy (417). Conditions are looking good for a few fun waves. The afternoon stays clean but the wind swings a touch cross, and the energy builds (578). It's not huge, but the glassy start makes it the first real highlight.
Tuesday, 7 July, and Wednesday, 8 July, see the swell hanging around the 4ft to 6ft mark, but the mornings are cross-on or cross-off. Wednesday afternoon has clean conditions with a bigger 6ft, SW swell and very strong combined energy (1449). It's shaping up nicely.
The standout window kicks off on Thursday, 9 July, through to Sunday, 12 July. Thursday morning is the highlight: offshore ESE winds at 15 km/h, a solid 6ft groundswell from the SSW with a period of 14 seconds, and massive energy (2302). The report says it's excellent for experienced surfers. That's the one to circle – long period groundswell, clean, and plenty of push. Thursday afternoon and Friday are also very good with clean offshore winds and solid 5ft to 5ft SSW swell. The energy during Friday morning is still strong at 744. Saturday, 11 July, is glassy again in the morning with a 4ft SSW swell, and Sunday, 12 July, stays glassy but smaller at 3ft. This whole four-day stretch is the best run on offer.
After that, it all drops off quickly. Monday, 13 July, turns poor with weak 2ft surf and cross-on wind, and it stays mostly poor or marginal through to mid-week. Crowds at Strand are said to be `sometimes`, so you can expect a few others out when it's good.
Then, around Thursday and Friday, 16 and 17 July, things get interesting again but for experts only. Thursday morning, 16 July, has a big 10ft S/SSE swell but it's cross-on with light rain. Friday morning, 17 July, is the other big standout: a 7ft, S groundswell with a clean cross-off breeze and extreme energy (2350). The report says it's excellent for experienced surfers again. That Friday afternoon gets messy with strong cross-winds. Saturday and Sunday, 18 and 19 July, fade back to smaller, lumpy conditions.
So, to wrap it up: the best windows are Thursday 9 July through Sunday 12 July for clean, glassy to offshore conditions with solid shoulder-high plus swell. Then the second, more powerful option for experienced surfers is the morning of Friday 17 July, with a serious 7ft groundswell and clean winds. Watch out, though – that big swell Thursday 16 July at 10ft is heavy and only for the brave.
Rusty.
