The Lowdown

Alright, grab a seat, it’s Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for our patch. We’ve got a bit of a slow burn ahead, so don’t be in a rush. The first real window of clean surf is a few days away, but there are some decent pulses coming through.

To start, the water is sitting at 58°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a good wetsuit.

We’re looking at a couple of quiet days to kick things off. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are a write-off – poor surf conditions with cross-off winds and small, weak swell. Tuesday the 25th is where it starts to get interesting. The morning brings a clean 5ft swell from the SW with a long 14-second period and moderate offshore winds from the ESE. The combined swell energy is pumping at 1124 (moderate to strong). This is the first real standout, especially for a point break like Bikini Beach (Gordon's Bay). The offshore wind will keep it clean, and that long-period groundswell is perfect for a point. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so you might have to share. The afternoon sees the wind pick up to a fresh 19 mph offshore, but the swell drops a touch and the quality drops off.

Wednesday the 26th offers a morning of smaller 3ft SSW swell, but the afternoon is the real surprise. A clean 3ft swell with a very long 16-second period and gentle offshore ESE breeze. Combined energy hits 1049 (moderate to strong). That’s a super clean, glassy afternoon session in the making, but remember, that long period can make a beach break a bit straight – on a point it’ll be lined up nicely.

Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th are messy or small, so don’t get too excited. Saturday the 29th through Monday the 31st are pretty ordinary – strong winds, lumpy conditions, and small swell.

Now, looking ahead to Tuesday the 1st of September, we’ve got another solid swell on the way. Morning brings a clean 7ft SSW swell with a 14-second period and moderate ESE offshore winds. Combined energy is a massive 1576 (strong to very strong). That’s expert territory at that size, but if you’ve got the skills, this is a proper session. The afternoon holds similar with a 7ft SW swell.

After that, the outlook gets patchy. Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd are blown out with fresh cross-onshore winds. Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th are small and messy. Sunday the 6th has a tiny 1ft glassy swell in the morning, but it’s weak, and the afternoon brings a 7ft short-period SW swell with cross-off winds – surfable but nothing special.

So, to wrap it up: the standout sessions are Tuesday the 25th (morning) and Wednesday the 26th (afternoon) for clean, long-period SW groundswell at Bikini Beach. For the bigger, more powerful stuff, Tuesday the 1st of September is the one for experienced surfers.

Stay patient, and keep an eye on the charts.
