The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Koeel Bay has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a slow burner, but there are a couple of windows where it gets real good. Don't get too excited about the first few days, because the surf is pretty uninspiring to kick things off, but we’ll get there.

Monday the 24th is a write-off, to be honest. The swell is just over 4ft from the SW, but with a cross-off breeze, the wave energy is moderate (450), and the call says it’s marginal. Not worth getting wet for.

Tuesday the 25th is where things start to look up. The morning brings a solid 5ft SW groundswell with a very long 15-second period, and the wind is offshore from the SE. The energy jumps right up (1260), and the report says it’s *very good* surf conditions. This is it, the first stand-out. For an intermediate, this is going to be pumping, with clean, lined-up waves. The water temp is about average for the time of year.

Wednesday the 26th offers a bit of a mixed bag. The morning has a short period 5ft SE windswell and a strong offshore wind – it’s clean but the period is only 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit fat and weak. The afternoon is the real surprise: tiny waves at 2ft, but a very long 16-second period from the S and offshore wind. The energy is still moderate (718), and the conditions are described as *very good*. That’s a funky little combo.

Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th are a tale of two different winds. Thursday is a complete bust with onshore and cross-onshore winds. Friday, however, looks excellent. Morning has light offshore wind with 4ft S swell and decent period, then the afternoon goes glassy – dead calm, clean as a whistle, with 3ft S swell. That’s a beautiful, small-wave session on the cards.

Saturday the 29th through Monday the 1st of September is a pretty bleak stretch. Onshore winds, messy conditions, and rain showers on Sunday. There’s a gap of several days here where you just wouldn't bother.

But hold on, because Tuesday the 1st of September afternoon is another absolute standout. The wind goes dead calm – glassy – and the swell jumps to 5ft from the SW with a solid 12-second period. The wave energy is strong (777), and it’s calling for *very good* surf. This is a top pick: clean, powerful, and with those conditions, the lineup might not be too crowded.

Wednesday the 2nd sees the return of howling onshore gales (34 mph!), so don’t even look at the ocean. Thursday the 3rd is a mess, and by the afternoon the swell is a massive 12ft from the SSW (energy up at 3801!), but the wind is cross-onshore and it’s flagged as being too big for Koeel Bay anyway. This is expert-only territory if anything, and more likely a kite-surfing day.

Friday the 4th is a step down with a 7ft S swell, but the wind is light onshore, making it marginal. Saturday the 5th is cross-onshore and choppy again.

Now, look ahead to Sunday the 6th of September. This is the second true standout in the long-range. Morning glass – dead calm – with a 6ft SW groundswell at a nice 13-second period. The energy is strong (1272), and the report says *very good* surf. This is a serious session, but being a week and a half out, lock it in mentally but keep an eye on the forecast for any changes.

Monday the 7th and Tuesday the 8th round things out with clean conditions and smaller swell, finishing with a glassy 5ft SSE swell on Tuesday morning.

So, the best bets? Tuesday 25th morning for a solid, clean groundswell, and Tuesday 1st September afternoon for glassy perfection. Keep your eyes on Sunday 6th September, too.

Rusty.
