Table - best surf conditions forecast for Koeel Bay over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve been looking over the Koeel Bay forecast for the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but by the end of the run, things are looking absolutely pumping.
The first proper surfable session kicks off Sunday morning, 12 July. It’s a clean 5ft S swell with an 11-second period, and the water’s sitting at 59°, which is about average for this time of year. Light east wind, 6 mph, keeping it offshore. The energy is moderate at 904, so it’s not a monster, but it’s a nice, clean start. Sunday afternoon drops to 3ft with a light SE breeze, still clean.
Monday, 13 July, is glassy but small – 3ft SSW in the morning, dropping to 2ft by the arvo. The energy is weak (181 and 145), so it’s more of a longboard or a learner’s session. Tuesday, 14 July, is a write-off – tiny 2ft S swell with onshore/cross-onshore winds. That’s the gap.
We then hit a stretch of ordinary surf from Wednesday, 15 July, through to Thursday, 16 July. Wednesday has a 3ft SW swell with a very long 17-second period, so the energy is moderate (426), but it’s cross-onshore. Thursday arvo gets glassy and a better 5ft SW swell, but it’s still just okay.
Now, the first real standout is Friday, 17 July, in the afternoon. We’ve got a solid 8ft SSW swell, 12-second period, and a 15 mph offshore wind from the ESE – that’s a serious offshore breeze. The energy is strong (1343). This is decent for strong intermediates, but with that size, it’s getting into expert territory for the bigger sets. The wind is moderate, so it’ll be clean.
Saturday, 18 July, arvo is glassy calm with a 4ft SSW swell, 13-second period. That’s a lovely clean window for a relaxed session.
But the real magic is locked in for the following week. Tuesday, 21 July, is a cracker: morning has a 7ft SSW swell, 10-second period, with a light offshore from the east. The energy is strong (1579). By the arvo, it’s 8ft, 11-second period, and a gentle offshore. That’s prime for experienced surfers. Wednesday, 22 July, is glassy in the morning with a 8ft SSW groundswell, 14-second period, and the energy is very strong (2709). That’s a standout.
The best of the best, though, is from Thursday, 24 July, onward. Friday morning, 24 July, has a 7ft SSW swell, 15-second period, with a moderate offshore from the SE. The energy is extreme (3116). Friday afternoon is a 8ft SSW swell with an 18-second period – that’s a very long-period groundswell – and the energy is 3841. This is only for experts, and at a reef break, that long period will fatten up the waves. It’s a world-class lineup for the crew who can handle it.
Saturday, 25 July, is glassy with a 6ft SSW swell, 15-second period, and strong energy (1668). Another cracker. Sunday, 26 July, hits 10ft SSW, 14-second period, with a clean cross-offshore wind. The energy is 3816. That’s massive, but it’s for experts only.
The final few days, Monday, 27 July, still have a solid 6ft SSW swell, 11-second period, and a light offshore in the morning.
The only real downside is that Koeel Bay can get crowded (sometimes), so for the absolute best sessions – like the 24th, 25th, and 26th – you’ll want to be early or late. The long-period swells (over 15 seconds) on the 24th arvo and 26th are best here at this reef, as they’ll hold shape nicely.
Overall, the standout without a doubt is the Thursday arvo to Saturday arvo of the second week. That’s the peak. For the rest, the first week is a warm-up. The gap between Tuesday, 14 July, and Thursday, 16 July, is a lull, so don’t bother.
Rusty.
