Table - best surf conditions forecast for Koeel Bay over the next 16 days.
Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. This is Rusty, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Koeel Bay. It’s a reef setup, and it’s pretty exposed to the south, so it catches a lot of what’s sent our way.
Right off the bat, Monday the 13th is a bit of a flat start. We’ve got tiny knee-high waves at 3ft, and while the water is a glassy 59°F — that’s 1°F cooler than average for this time of year, so it’s a little nippy — there’s just not enough push to get excited about. The energy is weak (181), so you’re really just floating around.
The real action starts to show its face on Wednesday the 15th. Tuesday is a write-off with tiny, onshore junk. But Wednesday morning we see a pulse of very long-period groundswell (17 seconds) coming from the southwest. It’s still a bit small in the morning, but the afternoon is the first real standout. That swell jumps to 6ft with a 16-second period, and the energy is pumping (1536). The wind goes glassy, and the water is clean. That’s a solid intermediate-to-expert session. The period is so long that it’s going to be proper grinding lines down the reef, not just a fat beachie wall.
Thursday the 16th morning keeps the quality high with 5ft swell from the southwest and glassy conditions. The energy is still strong (933). A very good session for anyone who knows the reef.
Then we get a bit of a messy spell through the weekend. Friday the 17th is clean with offshore winds, but the swell drops to 4ft-5ft, and the period shortens up. Saturdays are a bit cross-onshore. Sunday the 19th morning is back to glassy with 4ft, which is a nice little pick-up session.
Now, hold onto your board. The big standout is Tuesday the 21st of July. The morning is an absolute dream. We’ve got a solid 8ft of southwest groundswell running on a 16-second period. The energy is huge (2750), and the wind is dead calm — glassy as a lake. This is expert territory. The size and power will be intense, but if you’ve got the skills, that’s the session of the forecast. The afternoon gets a bit cross-onshore, so get it early.
Wednesday the 22nd is a write-off. A near gale (31-34 mph) from the north-northwest will absolutely trash the ocean. Don’t bother.
Thursday the 23rd morning is still messy with the wind, but the afternoon flips. The wind turns cross-off from the south-southeast, and the swell is still a solid 7ft from the southwest. The energy is very strong (1258). That’s a serious late-afternoon session for the experienced crew.
The end of the week and into the next weekend shows more promise. Saturday the 25th is a beauty: clean offshore winds from the southeast with 5ft to 6ft of southwest swell. The energy is high (1072-1495). That’s a very good stretch of clean, powerful surf.
Sunday the 26th is another glassy winner, with 5ft to 6ft of clean southwest swell. You’ll be surfing right through the morning and afternoon.
The following Monday the 27th is a blown-out mess with a strong north-northwest wind, but then Tuesday the 28th morning comes back around with glassy conditions and 5ft of long-period southwest swell. A solid end to the run.
So, the absolute best on offer is the morning of Tuesday the 21st of July — that's the big-wave, glassy, expert-level session. The afternoon of Wednesday the 15th and the morning of Thursday the 16th are also top-tier, but with slightly smaller waves. For a clean, all-day session that’s still powerful, Saturday the 25th is your best bet after that big swell passes.
Keep an eye on the tides, and don't be late for that Tuesday morning session. It looks like the kind of day you tell your mates about.
Rusty.
