The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a good, long look at what the next couple of weeks have in store for us at Koeel Bay.
The overall pattern is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a solid run of surf coming through, but it’s not all going to be clean. The first week is looking pretty good, with some real standout windows of glassy conditions, but we’ll have to deal with a few days of wind-affected chop. The second week brings some serious size, which will be a game-changer for the experienced crew.
Koeel Bay is a reef break, fairly consistent and fairly exposed to the swell. The water temp is sitting at 58°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit.
We kick off on Friday, July 17. The morning is all about glassy conditions, with a 4ft SW swell, period at 11 seconds, and zero wind. The combined energy is moderate at 375. It’s going to be clean and fun. The afternoon holds up too, with a 4ft SW swell and glassy conditions. This is a solid start.
Saturday, July 18 is a bit of a letdown after Friday. The morning has a light cross-onshore wind messing with a small 3ft S swell. The afternoon is cleaner, but the swell drops to 2ft.
Sunday, July 19 is a tale of two halves. The morning is a write-off with a moderate cross-onshore wind and choppy 4ft swell. Don’t bother. But the afternoon turns it right around – glassy conditions return with a 4ft SW swell. That afternoon session is the one to aim for.
Monday, July 20 keeps the good vibes going. The morning is glassy with a 4ft SSW swell. The energy is moderate (276). The afternoon is still glassy, but the swell drops to 3ft and the period shortens, so it’s a bit ordinary.
Tuesday, July 21 is where things start to get interesting. The morning is dead calm, glassy, with a 4ft SSW swell that has a very long period of 14 seconds. The energy is strong (502). That long period means the waves will have real shape and power. But the standout of the first week is the Tuesday afternoon. We’ve got a 5ft SSW swell, period still at 14 seconds, and a light cross-offshore wind. The energy jumps to 959. This is going to be excellent, clean, and powerful. Get out there.
Wednesday, July 22 is a mess. The morning is blown out by a strong cross-onshore wind, and the afternoon is even worse. The swell jumps to 12ft and the wind is howling onshore, making it unsurfable. Leave the board at home.
Thursday, July 23 is still poor. The morning is choppy, and the afternoon has a very long period (18 seconds) 5ft SW swell, but it’s onshore. The energy is high (1987), but the wind ruins it.
Friday, July 24 – now we’re talking. This is the absolute standout of the entire forecast. The morning is pure magic. We have a clean 10ft SSW swell, period at 16 seconds, and a light cross-offshore wind. The combined energy is massive at 4523. This is a powerful, long-period groundswell with clean conditions. This is for experienced surfers only – it’s too big for beginners. The afternoon is still big, but the wind picks up a bit and we get a marginal tide warning.
Saturday, July 25 is still big. The morning has a moderate offshore wind with a 8ft SSW swell. The energy is huge (3557). The wind is offshore, so it’ll be clean. A solid day for the experts.
Sunday, July 26 has a massive 12ft SSW swell in the afternoon. With that much energy (6065) and a moderate offshore wind, it’s going to be a wall of water. The model says it’s too big for this break, and I’d agree. Only for the very brave.
Monday, July 27 sees the size drop. The morning is glassy but still too big at 12ft. The afternoon is the sweet spot, with a clean 5ft SSE swell. That’s a much more manageable size.
The last few days of the month and into August have some smaller, cleaner options. The afternoon of Friday, July 31 is a nice little finisher, with a 8ft SE swell and a cross-offshore wind. The energy is moderate (961). And Saturday, August 1 has glassy conditions with a 4ft SSW swell to round it out.
So, to sum it up: the best on offer is Friday morning, July 24 for the big, clean groundswell. The second best is Tuesday afternoon, July 21 for the clean, powerful session in the first week.
Stay safe out there.
