The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Koeel Bay – a reef setup that’s fairly consistent and picks up a good S swell. The water’s a bit colder than normal for this time of year, sitting at 58°, about a degree and a half off the usual, so you’ll want the thick rubber.
Thursday afternoon kicks things off with a clean 5ft SW swell and glassy conditions. The energy is solid (734) and the period is a nice 13 seconds – proper groundswell. This is a good start, but it’s not the standout.
Friday morning and afternoon keep it clean with glassy conditions and a smaller 4ft to 4ft SW swell. Good, clean fun, but nothing to write home about.
Saturday drops off to 3ft with a cross-on wind, and it gets marginal. Sunday morning gets blown out by a 20 km/h NNW cross-on, making it choppy and messy. Sunday afternoon cleans up a little but still cross-on and marginal.
Monday morning brings back the glass with a 5ft SSW swell and clean conditions (352 energy). Nice, but still not the best of the run.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Tuesday morning, July 21 – glassy, 5ft SSW swell at 14 seconds, and the energy jumps to 855. That’s a solid, clean groundswell with good shape. This is the first real standout. Afternoon gets chewed up by a 20 km/h cross-on, so get in early.
Wednesday July 22 is a write-off – 35 km/h NW cross-on, lumpy, 8ft swell but poor quality. Not for paddling. Thursday July 23 still has size (10ft) but cross-on and lumpy – only for the brave or the kites.
Friday July 24 is where the magic starts. Morning: clear, 8ft SSW swell, 15 seconds, light cross-off breeze, clean. Energy is 2274 – strong stuff. This is excellent for experienced surfers. Saturday July 25 is even better: morning shows 8ft SSW at 16 seconds, offshore SE wind, clean, with energy of 3413. That’s a serious groundswell with perfect wind. The 16-second period means long, powerful lines – best on the reef. This is the absolute standout of the whole forecast.
Sunday July 26 keeps it going with 8ft SSW at 17 seconds, cross-off winds, energy over 3900. It’s massive, clean, and for experts only. The whole run from Friday to Monday is a proper swell window.
Monday July 27 and Tuesday July 28 ease off to 5ft but keep it glassy and clean with offshore or calm winds – still great for intermediates.
Wednesday July 29 brings another pulse: 8ft SSW at 18 seconds, but a cross-on wind in the morning messes it up. Afternoon cleans up nicely with a cross-off and 7ft swell – another excellent session for the experienced.
From Thursday July 30 onward, the wind gets messy again, and the swell drops. The last few days are poor, with lumpy cross-on conditions and smaller swell.
So, the best on offer? Saturday July 25 morning – 8ft SSW, 16 seconds, offshore, clean, huge energy. That’s the one to circle. Friday July 24 morning and Sunday July 26 morning are also excellent. Don’t sleep on Tuesday July 21 morning either – smaller but glassy and clean.
Rusty.
