Table - best surf conditions forecast for Koeel Bay over the next 16 days.
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what Koeel Bay has in store for us.
Right now, the pattern is that we’ve got a solid pulse of S/SSW groundswell coming through, but a lot of it is going to be blown out by strong ESE winds. Koeel Bay is a fairly consistent reef break that’s fairly exposed to this direction, and it handles a south swell well. The water temp sits at 59°F which is about average for this time of year.
The first real chance to get wet will be Saturday the 11th. It’s not the best, honestly. We’re looking at a 6 ft S swell at 12 seconds with moderate wave energy (1155), but that 16 mph ESE offshore wind is going to keep it clean, if a little on the raw side. You can surf it, but it’s not a standout.
Sunday the 12th is where things settle. Early morning, we’ve got 5 ft S swell at 11 seconds with light E cross-offshore wind at 6 mph. The wave energy drops to moderate (942) but it’s clean. Afternoon stays clean with a 5 ft S swell and light ESE offshore breeze. This is the best session of the first half of the week.
Monday the 13th is a glass-off day – 3 ft SSW swell with zero wind in the morning and 2 ft in the afternoon with barely a breath. It’s small and clean, but not a lot of power. Wednesday the 15th afternoon brings back some life – 5 ft SW swell with a long 16-second period, and glassy conditions. It’ll be clean and the energy jumps to 1271, but that long period might make it a bit tricky at a beach, though at Koeel Bay reef it’ll be fun.
Now, this is where it gets interesting. Friday the 17th, the swell pushes 8 ft from the SSW at 13 seconds with a fresh 19 mph ESE offshore wind. Wave energy is strong (2229). This is solid, big groundswell. Those 8 ft waves are for experts only, especially with that period. Clean, but big.
But the true standout is Saturday the 18th. Morning: 8 ft SE swell, 10-second period, ENE cross-offshore breeze at 6 mph. Wave energy is very strong at 2638. Afternoon: 8 ft SE, 10 seconds, glassy with a light east wind. The wind, the size, the consistency – this is the best on offer. It’s for experienced surfers only, but it’s a ripper.
From Sunday the 19th through Thursday the 24th morning, we hit a rough patch. Strong onshore winds and messy, choppy conditions, with swell sizes dropping to below 3 ft. There is a brief flash on Thursday the 23rd afternoon with a 5 ft SSW swell and 15-second period, but the cross-shore wind makes it marginal.
The run home gets better. Friday the 24th, we’re back to 5 ft SSW at 12 seconds with a gentle offshore SE breeze, clean. Saturday the 25th afternoon looks good too – 4 ft SSW at a very long 17-second period and a light cross-offshore wind, clean. Sunday the 26th afternoon stays clean with a fresh offshore SE wind and a 5 ft SSW at 14 seconds.
Crowds are possible here, so if you want the best without too much company, hit Sunday the 12th or keep an eye on Friday the 24th.
Stay safe, don’t get greedy.
Rusty.
