The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let's have a look at the next few weeks at Koeel Bay.
We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag coming up, with some real potential if you pick your moments. The window kicks off on Wednesday, 15th July, but honestly, it’s a bit of a write-off with poor conditions.
The real standout window starts on Thursday, 16th July. The early morning brings a glassy 5ft swell from the southwest, with a long 13-second period. That’s proper groundswell, and with the wind going totally glassy, it’s going to be clean. The water is a touch colder than average for this time of year at 58°, so you might want a decent spring suit. The combined energy is moderate (933). It’s a solid start to the day. The afternoon holds that glassy vibe too, with a clean 5ft SW swell. This is the best on offer for the near term.
The rest of the first week is a bit of a struggle. Friday morning, 17th July, is still nice and glassy, with a 4ft SSW swell, but it’s a bit weaker. After that, the wind swings around and messes things up with onshore and cross-onshore breezes through the weekend and into Monday.
There’s a big gap from the 21st of July through to the 23rd where the swell gets massive, but it’s also blown out. On the 21st, we’re looking at a 10ft swell from the SSW with a fresh cross-onshore wind at 22 mph. That’s a lot of energy (3338), but it’s going to be lumpy and messy. The 22nd and 23rd get even bigger, with the 23rd showing an 12ft SSW swell, but the wind is still cross-onshore. That kind of size is for experts only, and even then, it’s not clean.
The surf picks up again in a promising way on Saturday, 25th July. The afternoon session is a gem: a 5ft SSW swell with a clean cross-offshore wind from the SSE. This is going to be a beautiful, lined-up wave. Then on Sunday, 26th July, the morning is glassy with a 3ft SSW swell, but the real treat is the afternoon. You’re looking at a 5ft SSW swell, with an 18-second period – that’s very long period groundswell. The energy is strong (1557), and with the same clean cross-offshore wind, it’s going to be an excellent session for experienced surfers. This is the standout of the whole forecast.
The very end of the run, into the 28th and 29th of July, offers some clean, offshore conditions with moderate 4ft to 4ft SW swells, which will be a nice way to finish.
So, for the best waves, set your alarm for the morning of Thursday, 16th July, and then definitely clear your calendar for the afternoon of Sunday, 26th July. That second one is the one to wait for.
Rusty.
