The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s break down what’s happening at Koeel Bay for the next couple of weeks.
First off, the water is running a bit colder than normal for this time of year, sitting at 58°, so you’ll want a good wetsuit if you’re paddling out.
The pattern starts off with a tease. Friday the 21st kicks things off with a clean 4ft SSW swell, light cross-off breeze, and the combined energy sitting at a solid moderate 627. It’s a nice way to ease into the weekend, but it’s not the standout.
Saturday the 22nd is a total loss – poor conditions with cross-on and onshore winds, so don’t waste your time. Sunday the 23rd is better: clean 5ft to 4ft SSW groundswell, periods around 13 seconds, light cross-off wind. The energy is moderate (633), and the surf is clean, but it’s still not the best of the run.
Now, Tuesday the 25th is where it gets interesting. The morning brings a 5ft SW swell with a 14-second period, offshore wind from the ESE at 12 mph, and the combined energy jumps to 938 – that’s moderate but solid. The waves will be clean, well-shaped, and that long period means plenty of push between sets. This is a genuine highlight for intermediate surfers, though the size is getting toward the upper end for beginners.
The real standout, though, is Friday the 28th. Glassy conditions in the morning – wind from the north at barely 3 mph – with a 4ft S swell, 14-second period, and combined energy of 765. It’s clean, it’s glassy, and the waves will be well-formed. For a reef break like Koeel Bay, that long-period S swell is going to wrap in nicely, giving you some proper lines. The crowd factor is “sometimes” here, so you might get a few others out, but on a morning like that, it’s worth the paddle.
The following week sees a bit of a mixed bag. Sunday the 30th has some solid 6ft to 7ft SSW swell, but the wind is cross-off and the conditions are marginal – the energy is strong (1614), but it’s not clean enough to call it perfect. Still, for experienced surfers, there’s power there.
Tuesday the 1st of September is another glassy gem – morning and afternoon both glassy, with a 5ft to 5ft SSW groundswell, period around 14 seconds, and combined energy of 967. That’s a very clean, well-ordered swell. If you can get out, it’ll be a treat.
Then we hit a rough patch from Wednesday the 2nd through Saturday the 5th – mostly cross-on and onshore winds, choppy and lumpy, with energy dropping off. The best of that period is Friday the 4th morning: a 8ft SSE swell, gentle offshore wind, and combined energy of 1526. That’s a lot of power, and it’s clean, but it’s only for experienced surfers at that size. The period is short (9 seconds), so it’ll be a bit more dumpy and less forgiving.
So, to sum it up: the best on offer is Friday the 28th morning for the glassy, clean 4ft S groundswell, followed closely by Tuesday the 1st of September for another glassy, well-formed SSW swell. If you’re keen on bigger, more powerful surf, the 4th of September morning is your window, but it’s for experts only.
Stay stoked, and keep an eye on the forecasts – things can always change.
