The Lowdown
Right, Rusty here again. Let's take a squiz at Koeel Bay for the next couple of weeks.
This is a reef break for the intermediate crew, and it's fairly consistent, so there's a decent run of waves to talk about. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothin' too out of the ordinary.
The action kicks off on Tuesday, the 18th of August. Tuesday morning is pumpin' with a 6ft swell coming from the SSW, a 12-second period, and a cross-off wind from the SSE keeping it clean. The combined energy is strong at 1691, but it's on the bigger side, so it's one for the experienced crew. The afternoon fades a bit with tide issues, but there's still a 6ft swell.
Wednesday the 19th is a bit of a dud with cross-shore winds puttin' a wobble on things, even with 5-6ft of swell. Not worth the paddle.
The first real standout comes Thursday morning, the 20th of August. We've got a solid 8ft SSW swell with a 13-second period, and the combined energy is a strong 1891. The wind is a clean cross-off from the SSE. This is big, powerful groundswell, and for a reef break, that's a treat. It's well over the 5ft mark, so it's experts-only territory.
Friday the 21st is a beauty. The morning delivers a clean 5ft SSW swell with a light cross-off breeze. The energy is back to a more moderate 882, and the wind is near glassy. This is the kind of size you can really have fun on.
The weekend goes a bit pear-shaped. Saturday the 22nd has onshore winds and lumpy conditions, with the swell jumpin' to 7ft in the arvo but it's messy. Sunday the 23rd swings back to clean conditions with a 6ft swell and cross-off wind in the morning, energy up to 1579 (strong), but it fades out later.
Monday the 24th is small and clean – 2ft to 4ft – good for a longboard session.
The next standout is on Tuesday the 25th of August. You've got a 5ft SW swell, but the period stretches out to a very long 14 seconds. That's groundswell energy, and the wind turns offshore from the ESE. The afternoon looks very good, with clean conditions and energy at 943 (moderate). On a reef, that long period will wrap in perfectly.
Then we hit a bit of a lull. From Wednesday the 26th through Sunday the 30th, expect onshore winds and generally poor conditions. There's a pulse on the 28th with a 6ft to 7ft SW swell and a very long 16-second period, but the wind is messy. The energy is huge – 2069 on Friday morning – but it's all blown out.
Finally, the real gem is Sunday the 30th of August. The morning has a 6ft SW swell with a 14-second period, offshore wind from the east, and energy at 1512 (strong). Then Sunday afternoon… it goes glassy. A clean 7ft SW groundswell with that same long period and not a breath of wind. This is the best session of the whole outlook. It's a true standout. Just a heads up, this spot can get a crowd "sometimes", and with glass like that, you won't be alone.
The first few days of September look average again until Wednesday the 2nd, which finishes the run with a glassy, small 4ft morning.
So, for the big, clean power, Thursday the 20th is your heavyweight. But for the long-period perfection, Sunday the 30th of August is the one. That arvo session is a dream.
Rusty.
