The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run of swell on the way, but it’s a story of two halves. The first week is all about building, then holding, while the second week fades out into nothing much. The standout period is smack bang in the middle.
Kicking off on Friday the 17th of July, and it’s a beauty to start. Tubes (reef and point) is already showing its hand with a solid 8ft SW swell. The wind is glassy, dead calm, so it’ll be absolutely clean. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a slightly thicker suit. The combined energy is strong at 1496, and with a period of 11 seconds, these are proper, well-shaped waves. It’s a consistent spot, but crowds are possible, so get in early.
The swell drops a touch into Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th, but it’s still in the 5ft to 6ft range with clean, cross-offshore winds. It’s good, but not the best on offer. The real fireworks start on Monday the 20th. The morning is glassy with a 7ft SW swell, period picking up to 10 seconds, and energy at 1397. It’s looking very good.
Tuesday the 21st of July morning is a special one. We’ve got a 5ft SW swell, but look at that period – 15 seconds. That’s proper groundswell, and the energy is still strong at 1226. With glassy winds, this is a point break dream. That long period will make for long, peeling walls and easy paddling between sets.
Now, hold onto your boards for Thursday the 24th of July. This is the highlight of the whole outlook. The morning is glassy, with an 12ft SSW swell and a period of 16 seconds. The combined energy is a massive 5742 – that’s serious power. This is for experienced surfers only; anything over 8ft and you need to know what you’re doing. The afternoon stays clean with a light cross-off breeze. The same goes for Friday the 25th of July, with 10ft SW swells and glassy mornings. This is the best run of the forecast.
But after that, it gets messy. Saturday the 26th of July is a write-off with heavy rain and 28 mph winds, and while Sunday the 26th has a huge 8ft, 17-second swell, the wind is cross-off and the conditions are marginal. The energy is sky-high at 5845, but it’s a gamble. The rest of the week into August sees the swell drop and the wind turn onshore or cross-shore. By the 30th, we’re down to 4ft and the quality is poor.
So, the takeaway? The best surf is hands down the 24th and 25th of July. If you can only get out once, make it the morning of the 24th – that 12ft, 16-second SSW groundswell with glassy conditions is about as good as it gets. After that, the second week is a long, flat, and windy gap with nothing to recommend.
Stay stoked, and see you out there.
Rusty.
