The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Tubes. This is a reef and point set-up that’s consistent and sheltered, handling a SSW swell best. The water is much colder than normal at 58°F, which is a solid 8°F cooler than usual for this time of year, so definitely factor in an extra thick wetsuit.

We’re starting off Sunday afternoon, the 23rd of August, with a clean 8ft SW swell rolling in. The energy is already strong at 1526, and with a light cross-off breeze, it’ll be clean and lined up. That’s a solid start.

Monday the 24th keeps the momentum going. The morning is a beauty – glassy, 7ft SW swell, and that light offshore wind from the SW will have the waves peeling perfectly. Afternoon stays clean with a 6ft SW swell, but the wind shifts a little cross-off. Still, a very good day all round.

Now, Tuesday the 25th is where things get proper. We’re looking at an 8ft SW swell in the morning, bumping up to 10ft by the afternoon with a longer 15-second period. The energy jumps to 4085 by the afternoon. The wind stays offshore from the SSW, meaning clean, powerful, well-shaped waves. This is for experienced surfers only – the size and power will be too much for beginners. This is a standout.

Wednesday the 26th is a write-off. The wind swings hard onshore from the E at 15-19 mph, turning that 8ft to 10ft SSW swell into a choppy, lumpy mess. The energy is still high, but the quality is gone. Save your energy.

Thursday the 27th makes a comeback. The morning is glassy with a 7ft SSW swell, and the energy is still solid at 1375. That’s clean, glassy surf. The afternoon stays clean with a 6ft swell. A very good day to be out.

Friday the 28th is a smaller day, dropping to 5ft in the morning with glassy conditions, then 4ft in the afternoon with a little cross-on chop. It’s okay, but not a standout.

Saturday the 29th is a complete washout. Strong NNW winds at 22 mph will make a mess of the small swell. Don’t bother.

Sunday the 30th sees a bit of a recovery. A 7ft WSW swell with moderate offshore wind from the SW. It’s clean, but the period is a shorter 9 seconds, so the waves will be a bit softer and more crumbly. Still a good session.

Monday the 31st is a big one. A 10ft WSW swell comes in with glassy conditions in the morning. That’s 2164 of energy, clean, and powerful. This is expert territory again. The afternoon gets a bit tricky with a cross-shore wind, but the morning is a standout.

Tuesday the 1st of September is a nice, manageable day. A 5ft SW swell with gentle offshore winds in the afternoon. Clean and fun.

Wednesday the 2nd of September is another big morning. A 10ft SW swell, glassy, and 2770 energy. That’s a serious, powerful session for experienced surfers. The afternoon gets choppy with onshore wind.

Thursday the 3rd of September goes wild. A 15ft to 13ft swell with gale-force winds. The energy is huge, but the wind is howling. This is not for paddle surfing – this is a kite-surfing setup if you’re brave.

Friday the 4th of September is a nice reset. A 8ft SW swell, clean, with light winds. A very good day.

Now, the real standout of the whole forecast is Saturday the 5th of September. We’re looking at an 18ft SW swell in the morning, building to 16ft in the afternoon with a 16-second period. The combined energy is off the charts – 13613 in the morning and 13334 in the afternoon. The wind is offshore. This is exceptional surf for expert surfers only. The long period means it’ll be very powerful and will jack up on the reef. This is a once-in-a-forecast type of day. If you’re not an expert, stay on the beach and watch.

Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th of September keep the big swell going, with 12ft to 13ft SW swell and offshore winds, keeping it clean and powerful. Still expert territory, but very good.

So, the best on offer? Tuesday the 25th of August for its perfect balance of size and quality, and Saturday the 5th of September for the sheer, monstrous power and clean conditions. Get on it.

Rusty.
