Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s get into it. The good news is that there is surf on the way, but we’ve got a bit of a rough start to wade through first. The swell is coming, but the conditions are going to be choppy and a bit blown out for the first few days before things clean up real nice.
Right now, through the afternoon of Thursday the 2nd, there’s a chunky 15 ft SW swell rolling in at Tubes, but it’s got a strong 25 mph cross-off wind, so it’s going to be messy and tough. The wave energy is pumping – huge, actually (4157) – but for most folks, this is going to look better from the cliff than from the water. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit.
Friday the 3rd drops down to a more manageable 8 ft to 8 ft, wind stays cross, and the period is a nice 12 seconds. Still a bit lumpy with that cross-shore ripple, but you can find a few. Saturday the 4th is similar, a bit smaller. Not really recommendable, just keeping you in the loop.
Sunday the 5th afternoon is where we start to see a shift. The swell drops to 5 ft from the SE at 11 seconds, and the wind goes glassy. That’s a lovely window for a clean evening session at Tubes.
Then Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th are looking really promising. Swell bumps back up to 7–7 ft, period holding at 12 seconds, coming from the SW – which is right in the optimum direction for Tubes. The wind goes cross-off and light. These are clean, good waves. Wave energy is strong (around 1500) without being overwhelming. For a reef and point break like Tubes, this is going to produce some nice, workable lines. Keep in mind this spot can get crowded sometimes, so plan your paddle.
Now, the absolute standout is Wednesday the 9th of July. Thursday morning, to be exact. This one is a proper event. We’ve got a 15 ft swell from the SSW, with a period of 15 seconds – that is a very long period groundswell. This is going to have serious power and push, and the energy reading is off the charts at 8662. The wind? Glassy. Dead flat, offshore, perfect. This is an excellent setup for experienced surfers only – waves over 8 ft are expert territory. The 15-second period means the sets will be spaced out, making the paddle out easier, but at a reef and point like Tubes, those waves will stand up tall and clean. This is the best of the 16-day window. Mark it.
After that, the wind shifts onshore from the east on the 10th and 11th, ruining the shape. Too much chop and bump. By Tuesday the 14th, the swell drops right off to 3 ft from the south with weak energy (296), and it’s basically flat through the 15th. There’s a big gap of small, poor surf mid-month.
Then, on Thursday the 16th, we get another big pulse – 13 ft from the WSW, but with a strong cross-off wind and a period of only 10 seconds. That’s a short period, windswell-heavy setup. It’ll be a bit lumpy and raw. Good for the experts, maybe a kite day for others.
Friday the 17th holds 15 ft from the SW, still lumpy with cross winds. Not the clean, glassy perfection we saw on the 9th.
So, to wrap it up: the clear standout is Thursday morning, the 9th of July at Tubes. Glassy, massive, long-period groundswell, and proper power. Get on it if you’ve got the skills. The second best is Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th for some clean, fun SW swell with lighter winds.
