The Lowdown
Righto. We’ve got a solid 16-day run here at Tubes, a sheltered reef and point break on a southwest exposure. This spot likes a SSW direction, so we’re in business when the swell lines up.
Water temp’s sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – that’s a degree or so cooler, so you’ll be wanting a good steamer.
The week starts out quiet. Tuesday the 14th has a little 5ft swell in the morning, but it's coming from the ESE with a short 9-second period, and the wind is cross-offshore. Combined energy is moderate (487). It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. Tuesday afternoon drops right off. Wednesday is a write-off – tiny 1ft to 5ft with messy winds.
Things change Thursday the 16th. Thursday morning is where it kicks off: 10ft of SW groundswell, a long 14-second period, glassy conditions with a NW breeze at just 3 mph. The combined energy jumps right up to (3095) – that’s proper, strong energy. This is for experienced surfers only, mate. That's a standout. Thursday afternoon holds at 8ft with clean conditions.
Friday the 17th stays solid with 8ft in the morning and offshore wind. It’s still big, but it’s cleaning up nicely. Saturday the 18th drops back to a smaller, but glassy 4ft from the south – a good breather for the less experienced.
Sunday the 19th afternoon is another highlight: 7ft SW swell, 12-second period, offshore WSW breeze, and a clean face. Combined energy is strong (1235). Great wave shape for a point.
There’s a bit of a gap with onshore or questionable conditions from Monday the 20th into Tuesday morning, but hold on. Tuesday the 21st morning is the true standout of the whole forecast. 10ft of pure SSW groundswell, an exceptionally long 16-second period, and light cross-offshore wind. Combined energy is massive (5046). That is an incredible long-period groundswell, and at a sheltered reef and point like Tubes, it will line up beautifully. Again, this is expert-only territory. Tuesday afternoon gets hit by 25 mph WSW winds though – that’s a blown-out mess for surfing, but with 13ft swell, that setup might look more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Wednesday the 22nd still has a massive 13ft swell, but the wind is cross-shore in the morning. The afternoon cleans right up with a 3 mph offshore breeze and 12ft swell – that’s a heavy session for those who can handle it.
The end of the second week gets messy with near-gale winds on the 23rd, then a few clean windows. The 26th Sunday morning shapes up nicely: 8ft SW swell, a long 15-second period, and a gentle offshore breeze (2191 combined energy). A very good day. The 28th Tuesday afternoon also looks clean, with 8ft swell and a clean cross-offshore wind for the experts.
There’s a lot of power on offer here, but you need to pick your windows. Thursday 16th morning and Tuesday 21st morning are the absolute standouts for experienced surfers.
Rusty.
