The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run of swell on the way for Tubes, so let’s get into it.
The overall pattern is a classic SSW groundswell pulse that builds through the start of the week, peaks mid-week, and then fades into a more inconsistent, wind-affected pattern before a second, bigger pulse arrives early in September. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing out of the ordinary there.
We kick off Monday the 24th of August with a clean 7ft SW groundswell (12 seconds) and light offshore winds. The energy is solid (1099), and the morning will be glassy. The afternoon drops to 4ft, but the period stretches to 14 seconds, making for some really clean, lined-up waves. Not epic, but a very good start.
Tuesday the 25th is where it starts to get proper. The morning sees 8ft SW swell (13 seconds) with clean offshore wind. That’s getting into the “experienced only” zone, but the energy is ramping up hard (3331). The afternoon is the standout of the first week: 10ft SW (15 seconds) with a gentle offshore breeze. The energy is massive (4132), and the wind is holding it open. For anyone with the skills, this is a serious session.
Wednesday the 26th goes to shit. A strong cross-onshore wind from the east (35 km/h) turns the 10ft swell into a lumpy, choppy mess. The energy is still huge (4269), but the conditions are poor. This is a kite-surfing day, not a paddle-surfing day.
Thursday the 27th is a mixed bag. The morning has a 7ft SW swell with light onshore wind, making it a bit of a gamble. The afternoon cleans up nicely though, with a 5ft S swell (12 seconds) and light cross-offshore wind. A solid, clean option for the afternoon sesh.
Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th are small and messy. Friday’s 5ft S swell gets chopped up by a cross-onshore breeze, and Saturday drops to 3ft with a strong cross-shore wind. The only glimmer is Saturday afternoon with a weak 3ft WSW swell and clean conditions. Not much to get excited about.
Sunday the 30th sees a new pulse of 7ft WSW swell (9 seconds) with a moderate offshore wind. The period is short, so it’ll be a bit crumbly, but the energy is respectable (884). The afternoon gets a bit wild with 8ft swell and 35 km/h offshore wind—clean but really powerful.
The end of the month and start of September are a bit of a wait-and-see, but there’s a real gem brewing. Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st have solid 7ft+ SW swells (11-12 seconds) and clean conditions. The energy is solid (1109-1245), and the winds are light. A solid run of good, clean surf.
The real standout, though, is the last weekend. Saturday the 5th of September sees a 5ft SW swell (11 seconds) with a clean offshore breeze. But it’s Sunday the 6th that is the true highlight of the entire forecast. A massive 12ft SW groundswell (13 seconds) with a gentle offshore wind. The energy is through the roof (4665), and the wind is holding it open. This is a legendary day for experienced surfers only. It’s a week and a half out, so keep your fingers crossed, but this one looks special.
