The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get into it. We've got a long-range look at Tubes, a reef and point setup that's been consistent lately. The water's a chilly 57°F right now, which is a whopping 9° colder than usual for this time of year, so you'll want a thick wetsuit if you're heading out.
The first few days are a write-off, honestly. Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd are a mess with onshore winds and choppy conditions, despite a solid 8ft to 8ft SW swell rolling in. The energy's there, but the wind is ruining it. Just wait it out.
Things start turning around Sunday morning, August 23rd. That's the first real window. Clean 8ft SW swell with a gentle offshore wind. The energy is strong, and the sets are reasonable. There's early morning promise, but the crowd might be onto it too.
Monday, August 24th is your pick for the first week. Glassy offshore winds in the morning with a clean 7ft SW swell. The conditions will be pristine. This is a solid, clean day for the intermediate crew.
Then we get a bit of a gap. Tuesday the 25th sees a jump in size to 10ft, with excellent quality for the experienced. That's a big, powerful swell, but it's a little too big for beginners. The wind is clean, though.
The standout, the one you circle on the calendar, is Sunday, August 30th. It's a beast. A massive 18ft SW swell on Sunday morning, dropping to 15ft by the afternoon with offshore winds. This is only for the experts. It's a world-class, heavy wave at Tubes. The wind is offshore on the afternoon, making it absolutely perfect. This is the best on offer.
The long-range window into September keeps the quality high. Wednesday, September 2nd is a gem. Glassy conditions in the morning with a 8ft SW groundswell (14 second period). That's a long period, so it'll have some punch and good shape. The paddle out will be easier between sets.
Thursday, September 3rd morning is another big one for the experts: 15ft SW swell with clean winds. Then Friday, September 4th and Saturday, September 5th both have excellent, clean 10ft SW swells with offshore breezes. Saturday the 5th is a stunner – a 10ft SW swell with a 16-second period and light offshore wind. That's a proper, long-period groundswell. It's a bit far out, so be a little cautious, but it looks incredible.
Don't bother with the 26th or 27th of August – onshore winds ruin a good swell. The 29th has a big 10ft on the afternoon with offshore wind, but the morning is windy. The 30th is the real gem.
Alright, keep your eyes on that Sunday the 30th and the run into early September. Surf's coming.
Rusty.
