The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s brewing at Tubes.
We’ve got a solid run of swell coming through, but it’s a real mixed bag of conditions. The wind is the main character here, and for a lot of this stretch, it’s not playing nice. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so don’t forget the rubber.
The first real stand-out is Thursday morning, the 16th. We’ve got a solid 10ft SW groundswell rolling in with a long 14-second period, meaning real power and shape. The combined energy is cranking at 3095, and the wind is a light cross-off, so it’s clean. This is serious stuff though – over 8ft, so this is for experienced surfers only. Tubes is a reef and point, and this long-period groundswell will groove beautifully down the point, with long lulls between sets making the paddle out easier.
Friday morning, the 17th, is another gem. The swell drops a touch to 8ft, but the wind has gone glassy, dead calm. The period is still a solid 12 seconds, with energy at 1805. That’s a special window for a few hours where the waves will be clean and lined up. The crowd factor is "sometimes" here, so expect a few out, but dawn patrol should be worth it.
The biggest size comes through on Thursday the 23rd and again on the morning of the 26th. On the 23rd, the morning sees a monster 20ft SW swell with a 16-second period – that’s 15852 on the energy meter. That’s a big, charging day for the crew. The 26th is a bit smaller at 10ft, but still a solid 15-second period, and the wind is clean cross-off in the morning.
There are a few gaps of middling or poor conditions. The afternoons on the 17th, 19th, 22nd, and 24th get messy with onshore or strong winds making things choppy or just too hard to paddle into. That 31 mph offshore wind on the afternoon of the 22nd is a near gale; it’s clean but you’ll be fighting to get out.
Bottom line: Thursday morning the 16th and Friday morning the 17th are your best bets for clean, powerful, proper surf. Hit those early windows.
Rusty.
