Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming down the pipeline for Tubes over the next couple of weeks. This is a reef and point set-up, and it's a consistent one, so we've got a bit of a journey ahead.

We're kicking off on Friday, July 3rd. The water's sitting at about 64°, which is a touch cooler than we'd normally expect for this time of year – not a game-changer, just a heads-up. Friday morning has some swell, but the wind's a bit messy from the NW with a cross-shore, making things a little choppy. The real winner on Friday is the afternoon. The wind drops right off, going glassy, with a solid 8 ft groundswell pushing in from the SE. The energy is cooking at 1776, and those conditions are prime. Friday afternoon looks like a real standout.

Saturday the 4th is a bit of a let-down after that. Swell drops to 7 ft in the morning, and a cross-shore wind from the NW is messing with the face. By the afternoon, the swell is down to 6 ft, and the wind swings SE, which is still cross-shore. Nothing to write home about.

Sunday the 5th sees the swell fading further to 5 ft, but the afternoon glass-off from the SSE with 4 ft and an ESE direction might give you a few fun, clean waves if you're after a cruisy session. The energy is way down at 843.

Now, things start to get interesting again on Monday the 6th. We get a new pulse of SW swell, hitting 7 ft in the morning with clean, cross-offshore winds from the West. The energy is back up to 1353. The morning session here is a beauty. Tuesday the 7th is more of the same goodness: 7 ft of SW groundswell, clean, cross-off winds in the morning, and then the wind actually goes pure offshore from the SW in the afternoon. That's a solid day, maybe the best combo of the first week.

Wednesday the 8th sees the swell bump up to 8 ft, and the wind holds clean from the WSW, but it's getting stiff at 12 to 15 mph. By the afternoon, the swell is a chunky 10 ft with energy at 3209. That's getting into expert territory – a bit too much for the average punter.

Thursday the 9th blows up. We're looking at 12 ft of SSW groundswell, but the onshore winds from the East will be wrecking it. That's more a windsurfing or kiting setup than a paddler's dream. Don't bother. Friday the 10th through the end of the weekend on the 12th is pretty poor. Onshore winds, choppy, just ugly. A run of days where you're better off staying home.

We get a nice little reprieve on Monday the 13th. The wind goes glassy in the morning with 6 ft of SSW groundswell. Beautiful, clean waves, but the energy is down a bit at 1067. Tuesday the 14th is a write-off with a 25 mph Westerly. Most of that second week is small and wind-affected, with energy dropping below 500 for a few days.

There is one more standout to keep an eye on late in the window. On Thursday, July 16th, we get a really long-period groundswell from the SW, 17 seconds, with 6 ft of swell. The energy jumps back up to 2257. A 17-second period is serious groundswell, and at a reef and point break like Tubes, that could shape up into some absolute bombs. The wind is a light cross-onshore from the NNW, so it might be a little lumpy, but the potential is huge. That one is a promise for the future, but it’s far out, so keep your fingers crossed.

In between those highlights, expect a few blank days. The 18th is all wind and no grunt, so shake your head and walk away.

Rusty.

Information about the Tubes Surf forecast

The above surf forecast table for Tubes provides essential information for determining whether the surfing conditions will be good over the next 16 days. A general guide to surfing at Tubes can be found by selecting the local surf guide option on the grey menu. Our Tubes surf forecast is unique since it includes wave energy (power) that defines the real feel of the surf rather than just the height or the period. If you surf the same spot (Tubes) regularly then make a mental note of the wave energy from the surf forecast table each time you go. Very soon you may start to choose your surf days based on the wave energy alone combined with our forecast of favourable offshore wind conditions. Our star ratings will help here and of course you will also find the usual wave height and period predictions on our surf forecasts as well as a full break down of the swell components under our advanced users option (to reveal that, click the little Einstein character under the tide times).

Further information to help with frequently asked questions about our surf forecast for Tubes may be found under the help tab on the top menu and also by moving your mouse over the question marks on the surf forecast table itself. Please always bear in mind that the forecast is for near-shore open water and local factors at each surf break influence the actual breaking wave height, such as the beach / reef profile, water depths offshore and shelter.

Tubes is 19 km (12 miles) from the city of Kruisfontein. If you plan a holiday in Eastern Cape (South), look for hotels and other accommodation in Kruisfontein. Kruisfontein has rooms for a wide range of budgets as well as car hire and transport links.
