The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Tubes over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run of surf coming, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag to start. The first few days are a bit underwhelming, but the good stuff is brewing. The real standout window is the second half of the month, with some serious groundswell lining up.
Tuesday morning kicks things off with a clean 5 ft swell from the ESE, but the period is a short 9 seconds, so the energy is moderate (494). A light cross-off breeze will keep things tidy, but it’s not the star of the show. By Tuesday afternoon, the swell drops right off to a tiny 2 ft from the SSW, so we’ll be waiting.
Wednesday morning is a bit of a lull with 4 ft from the SW, but the period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s a bit weak. The afternoon picks up though, with a clean 5 ft SW swell and a 15 mph offshore wind. That’s a nice combination, but it’s still not the big one.
Now, Thursday the 16th is where it gets serious. A big 10 ft SW groundswell rolls in, with a long 14-second period, giving it a strong energy (3140). But the wind is a cross-onshore, which will mess it up. This is a beast for experts only, and the wind is a shame. Friday the 17th is an improvement, with a similar 8 ft SW swell and a light cross-off breeze. The period is 12 seconds, so it’s got some punch. The afternoon on Friday is a true standout: 10 ft from the SW, 12-second period, and a clean offshore wind. That’s the one for the experienced crew.
Saturday the 18th sees a shift to a 6 ft S swell, but the morning has onshore wind. The afternoon, however, is glassy. That’s a beautiful, clean 6 ft S swell, but it’s not the biggest.
The standout of the entire forecast is the period from Monday the 21st through Wednesday the 23rd. Monday the 21st is for experts only, with a massive 13 ft SSW swell, but the wind is onshore. Tuesday the 21st is when the magic happens. A 10 ft SSW groundswell with a 16-second period (4548 energy) and a clean offshore wind. That’s a dream for a point break like Tubes. The afternoon is still excellent with a 10 ft SSW swell. Wednesday the 22nd is another glassy morning with a 10 ft SSW swell, 15-second period. This is the best of the best.
The following week from the 24th onward sees a gradual drop in size, but it’s not over. The 26th sees a return of a solid 8 ft SW groundswell with a 15-second period and a clean offshore breeze. That’s a fantastic session for the weekend.
The 27th is a bit messy with cross-onshore wind, but the 28th has a 8 ft SW swell and a 7 ft SW swell on offer, with the afternoon of the 27th being glassy. The 29th rounds out the run with a clean 6 ft SW swell and a 12-second period, a nice way to finish.
The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
So, there’s a lot to get excited about, but the real golden window is the 21st to the 23rd of July. That’s your best bet. The 26th is also a cracker. Keep an eye on the wind, and you’ll score.
Rusty.
