The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get into it.
We’ve got a solid run of swell on the way for Tubes, a reef and point setup that’s looking clean and punchy. This is a spot that knows how to handle a south-west groundswell, and we’ve got plenty of that coming.
The action kicks off on Thursday, July 16th. The morning starts with a glassy 10ft SW swell at 14 seconds, and the combined energy is a hefty 3095. This is proper, powerful stuff. The water temp is about average for this time of year. This is a big, clean, powerful wave for experienced surfers only. The wind stays light and offshore through the afternoon, holding the 8ft SW swell in good shape. It’s a classic start.
Friday, July 17th, rolls in with a similar 8ft SW swell, glassy in the morning, and the energy is still strong at 1977. The afternoon sees a light cross-offshore breeze, keeping it clean. The swell ticks down a touch on Saturday morning, but it’s still a clean 4ft S swell, before the SW swell picks up again to 7ft in the afternoon with offshore winds. That’s a fun day.
Sunday, July 19th, is a write-off. The wind howls at 30 km/h, turning the 12ft SW swell into a messy, blown-out mess. The quality is marginal. Skip it.
Monday, July 20th, bounces back nicely. Glassy conditions greet a 6ft SW swell, with the energy a moderate 896. It’s a lovely, clean morning session. The afternoon stays clean with offshore winds.
Now, here’s the standout. Tuesday, July 21st, is the pick of the trip. The morning brings a 8ft SSW groundswell with a 14-second period and a huge energy reading of 3161. The wind is light and cross-offshore, keeping it clean. Then the afternoon is even better: a 12ft SSW swell, a very long 15-second period, and a massive 4785 energy reading. This is a premium, powerful, long-period groundswell, and at Tubes, a reef and point break, this is where it shines. The lines will be long and epic. This is a day for the experienced crew.
The quality continues through Wednesday, July 22nd, with a 12ft SW swell and 3857 energy, and Thursday, July 23rd, with a 12ft SW swell and 3865 energy. Both mornings have light cross-offshore winds, so the surf is clean and powerful. This is a prolonged run of excellent surf.
The pattern holds through the weekend, with Friday, July 24th, seeing a clean 5ft SSW swell with moderate offshore wind, and Saturday, July 25th, firing again with a 12ft SW swell, a 15-second period, and a jaw-dropping 5088 energy. The afternoon is clean and epic.
The second week is still full of potential. Sunday, July 26th, has glassy conditions in the afternoon for a 10ft SW swell. Monday, July 27th, is dead calm with zero wind and glassy conditions on a 7ft SW swell. It’s a beautiful, clean run. The quality starts to drop off on Tuesday, July 28th, with a light cross-onshore wind making things a little bumpy. Then Wednesday, July 29th, gets hammered by a 40-45 km/h cross-offshore wind, which is just too strong for clean surf. The energy drops, and the quality is poor.
Thursday, July 30th, is a complete mess. A massive 18ft SW swell, with a 15-second period and a crazy 11936 energy reading, is paired with a strong cross-onshore wind. It’s a giant, choppy, dangerous mess. Only for the truly insane or a kite surfer. Friday, July 31st, is still big and messy with a cross-onshore wind.
So, to sum it up: the first week is outstanding, with Tuesday, July 21st, being the absolute standout. The second week is promising but less certain, with a few days of glassy perfection before the wind and size get ugly. Get it while the getting is good.
Rusty.
