The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here. Got a solid 16-day stretch to look at, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag. There’s a gap at the start, then a few days of pure gold, some absolute washouts, and a couple of long-range gems that have me excited.
The action gets going this Sunday morning, the 23rd of August, at Tubes (reef and point). We’re looking at a solid 8ft groundswell from the SW with an 11-second period, packing a moderate punch of energy (1514). The water is sitting at 56°, which is a whopping 10° colder than usual for this time of year—that’s very unusual, so you’ll want the thickest wetsuit you’ve got. Conditions are clean with a light offshore breeze. It’s a consistent spot, so expect crowds.
Sunday afternoon stays clean, dropping slightly to 8ft, and Monday the 24th keeps the good run going with a 7ft swell and a glassy morning, building to 6ft in the afternoon with light offshore winds. A fun, clean wave.
The standout of the first week is Tuesday the 25th. The swell jumps to 10ft in the morning from the WSW, with a very long period of 14 seconds. That’s a groundswell with serious grunt (3619 energy). This is big—over 8ft—so this one’s for experienced surfers only. It’s a point and reef setup, which is ideal for a long-period swell like this, keeping it from closing out. Offshore winds all day, glassy in the morning, and clean in the afternoon. This is the one.
Wednesday the 26th is a total write-off. Strong cross-onshore winds from the E at 19-22 mph turn a solid 10-12ft swell into a lumpy, blown-out mess.
Thursday the 27th has a 7ft SSW swell but the winds are fluky—onshore in the morning, light cross-shore in the afternoon. Marginal.
Friday the 28th is a surprise. A drop to 5ft from the S, but with glassy conditions in the morning. That’s a small, clean wave for a quiet session. Energy is weak (811), but sometimes a glassy day on a small swell is the best kind of day.
Saturday the 29th is another blown-out day with strong cross-onshore winds, and the swell drops to 3-4ft. Not worth paddling out.
The second week kicks off with a mixed bag. Sunday the 30th has a 6ft swell from the WSW but the wind is howling. It’s clean, but with a short period of 8-9 seconds and strong wind, this might actually be more interesting for the kite surfers.
Monday the 31st is a small, clean day with 3ft swell and glassy conditions. Perfect for a longboard.
Then, Tuesday the 1st of September brings another very good session. A 6ft groundswell from the SW with a 13-second period, light cross-offshore winds, and 1157 energy. A fun, clean day. The afternoon gets messy with rain and onshore wind, so make the most of the morning.
Wednesday the 2nd is similar—8ft in the morning with light cross-on wind, but the afternoon cleans up nicely with an 8ft SW swell and light cross-offshore breeze. Good surf.
Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th are a write-off due to gale-force winds or marginal conditions.
Now, the second standout. Sunday the 6th of September. The morning is marginal with a short-period 10ft swell, but the afternoon is where it’s at. A massive 12ft swell from the W, with a short period of 9 seconds, but the wind turns offshore and gentle. The energy is strong (2121). This is big, powerful, and clean—expert territory again. It’s promising, but it’s far out, so keep an eye on the forecasts.
Monday the 7th finishes the run with a solid 8ft SW groundswell, moderate offshore winds, and good energy. A strong end to the window.
Rusty.
