The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
The next 16 days are looking pretty interesting, but it’s a slow start. We’ve got a real standout session coming up, plus some solid action later in the period. Let’s work through it.
The forecast kicks off on Friday 21 August, but honestly, Friday is a write-off. The wind is all over the place, the swell is messy, and the conditions are just not there. Saturday 22 August isn’t much better for the morning, but the afternoon does clean up a bit, though the surf is still only marginal. We’re looking at a couple of days of waiting.
The first real glimmer is Sunday 23 August. Tubes (reef and point) gets a clean sweep of smooth conditions. The morning is dead calm, offshore wind from the SW at just 3 mph, and the swell is a solid 8 ft with a 11-second period from the SW. The energy is cooking (1764), and it’s clean. The afternoon is also good with a light cross-off breeze. It’s not the biggest, but it’s clean and consistent.
Monday 24 August keeps the good run going. Offshore winds all day, with a 7 ft SW swell in the morning and 6 ft in the afternoon. The wave energy is moderate (1098 to 1019), but with light to moderate offshore breezes, the waves will be well-shaped and clean. Good for intermediates.
Now, the standout. Tuesday 25 August. This is the one to circle. Morning is glassy, absolutely glassy, with a pumping 10 ft SW swell running on a 14-second period. The combined energy is a massive 3180 – that’s strong wave energy, and it’s going to be powerful. This is for experienced surfers only; anything over 8 ft is expert territory. The afternoon is also excellent with light cross-off winds and a 13-second period. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
Things get a bit dicey from Wednesday 26 August with strong cross-onshore winds and lumpy conditions. The swell drops and the quality falls away. Thursday 27 August offers a bit of relief with glassy conditions in the morning and a 5 ft S swell, then a clean offshore wind in the afternoon. Friday 28 August is similar – small, glassy, but fun.
The next week sees a big pulse again. On Thursday 3 September, the afternoon is calling. Offshore winds from the SW at 9 mph, with a 10 ft WSW swell and a period of 11 seconds. The energy is through the roof at 3399. This is another expert-only session, and it’s looking excellent. The water is still average temp-wise.
Friday 4 September is a monster. The morning swell is 18 ft from the SW with a 14-second period. The combined energy is 12299 – that’s very strong, oceanic energy. This is massive, and only for the most experienced. The wind is light cross-onshore, so it’s not perfect, but that’s a lot of water moving. Be careful.
Saturday 5 September is still big at 13 ft, but the wind is a bit more onshore, making it less clean.
So, to sum it up: the best two sessions are Tuesday 25 August and Thursday 3 September (afternoon). Tuesday is glassy and powerful, Thursday is offshore and even bigger. Get on it if you’re experienced.
Rusty.
