The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for Tubes over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run of surf coming up, kicking off Sunday the 19th of July. The water is sitting at 63°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you might want an extra mm of rubber. The energy is already pumping with a combined swell energy of 1161 (moderate), and it’s only going to build from there.
Sunday afternoon sees a clean 7ft SW swell rolling in with a moderate offshore breeze. It’s a good start, but the real magic starts to show on Monday morning the 20th. The swell pushes to 7ft from the WSW, with clean conditions and a gentle breeze. By Tuesday morning the 21st, we hit a standout moment: glassy conditions, a 6ft SW groundswell, and a period of 15 seconds. That’s the kind of morning you wait for—long lines, easy paddling, and Tubes (reef and point) will be handling it beautifully. The combined energy is 1707 (moderate), but the quality is top shelf.
Tuesday afternoon gets a bit tricky with a 8ft SSW swell and a cross-shore wind, but it’s still rideable. Wednesday morning the 22nd is another glassy gem with 7ft SW at 12 seconds and 1640 energy. That’s a solid wave, clean as a whistle.
Now, Thursday the 23rd afternoon brings a bigger pulse: 12ft SW at 11 seconds, with offshore winds and 2657 energy. This is proper expert territory—over 8ft, so only for those with the skills and the nerve. The waves will be powerful and clean.
Friday the 24th morning sees the biggest energy of the run: 12ft SSW at 16 seconds, with a combined energy of 6563 (very strong). But the wind is cross-shore, so it won’t be as clean. Still, for experienced surfers on a point break, that long period will produce some memorable walls.
Saturday the 25th morning is another glassy, clean beauty with 8ft SW at 13 seconds and 2083 energy. That’s a standout for the weekend. The waves will be lined up, and with no wind, it’ll be a dream.
After that, the second week gets a bit rougher. Sunday the 26th has onshore wind, and Monday the 27th is windy with 25 mph cross-offshore winds, but still 10ft SW swell. It’s a bit of a washing machine. Tuesday the 28th brings rain and cross-shore winds, and the swell is still big at 10ft, but the quality drops.
We get a reprieve on Wednesday the 29th afternoon with glassy conditions and 8ft SSW at 13 seconds. Thursday the 30th morning is also glassy with a smaller 5ft SSW. Nice, clean, but smaller.
The end of the run fades. Friday the 31st and into August 1st, the swell drops off and the winds turn onshore. Not much to write home about. But then, on Sunday the 2nd of August, we get a late blast: 8ft SSW at 17 seconds, glassy, with an energy of 4193 (strong). That’s a serious groundswell and a very long period. It’s a week and a half out, so it’s promising but not guaranteed. If it hits, Tubes will be absolutely firing.
Overall, the best on offer is Tuesday morning the 21st of July—glassy, 6ft, 15-second SW groundswell. Second best is Saturday morning the 25th of July—also glassy, 8ft SW, 13 seconds. Those are the mornings to put in your calendar.
