The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with the long-range look at Tubes. This reef and point break is consistent and handles a solid south-west groundswell, so we’ve got a lot to work with over the next couple of weeks. Water temp’s sitting around 64°, which is a touch cooler than average for July – nothing drastic, just a little nippy for the season. Crowds can pop up here sometimes, but with the size and quality on offer, you’ll want to pick your sessions.
We kick off straight away on Friday the 17th. Morning sees a solid 10ft SW swell with a 12-second period and cross-off wind. That’s a big, powerful wave – definitely for the experienced crew. Combined energy is 2190 – plenty of grunt. By afternoon things glass off nicely under a light southerly, dropping to 8ft SW, still with good shape. Saturday the 18th is a step down: 4ft S swell in the morning, windy cross-off, then 5ft SW in the afternoon – both clean but nothing to write home about, just fun. Sunday the 19th stays marginal with 6ft SW but short 8-second period, and a fresh cross-off breeze. The afternoon jumps to 11ft SW with a 22 mph wind – messy and blown out. Not the day.
Monday the 20th is real nice – glassy morning with 6ft SW at 11 seconds, clean and punchy. Energy’s moderate. Tuesday the 21st is a standout: a 5ft SW groundswell with a long, long 15-second period, glassy calm conditions. That’s the kind of morning where Tubes really shines – long lines, easy paddle out, perfect for intermediate and above. Afternoon stays clean with 5.5ft SSW and light offshore. That Tuesday morning is one of the best in the whole window.
Then we hit a massive pulse. Wednesday the 22nd ramps up to 11ft SW with a 14-second period, but a 19 mph cross-off wind in the afternoon makes it a handful. Thursday the 23rd has a 13ft SW morning, glassy – that’s serious swell, experts only. Friday the 24th is the absolute peak: a 13ft SW swell with a 16-second period, dead calm in the morning – glass, energy reading 7158. Absolutely firing. Afternoon holds 15ft SW same period, cross-shore wind but still huge. Saturday the 25th sees 11ft SSW with moderate offshore wind – still solid and clean. Sunday the 26th is another standout: a 16ft SSW swell with 13-second period, light offshore in the morning, then clean afternoon with 16ft and light offshore – that’s a massive wave, only for the brave. Energy readings are off the charts.
After that, things drop. Monday the 27th gets onshore wind from the NE, messy with 16ft S swell – poor. Tuesday the 28th clean up starts: a 10ft SE swell in the morning cross-shore, but the afternoon has 8ft ESE with clean cross-off – that’s a nice size, direction not optimal but clean. Wednesday the 29th stays smallish 7ft ESE cross-on. Thursday the 30th morning is tiny 4ft SW, but afternoon
