The Lowdown

Righto, grab a coffee. I’m Rusty, and I’ve been staring at the charts for this next stretch. We’ve got a bit of a slow starter, but there’s some serious juice brewing for the patient surfer. Let’s break it down.

The first solid action kicks off Monday, the 24th of August. Early on, it’s small but clean—Whispering Waves is seeing a light 2 ft from the SW on an 11-second period. The combined energy is moderate (271), and with a light cross-off breeze, the surface will be tidy. By the afternoon, it bumps up a touch to 3 ft from the SSW—still clean, still a good warm-up.

Now, Tuesday the 25th is where it gets exciting. The morning swell holds at 4 ft from the SSW, but the period jumps to a very long 17 seconds, with combined energy kicking up to a strong 1319. This is proper groundswell. The wind stays light and cross-off. Whispering Waves is a point break, which is exactly where you want a long-period swell like this. It’ll reel off nicely. The afternoon gets even better: 6 ft (moderate size) with a steady offshore wind and that same long period. Combined energy is 1851. This is the standout session of the whole window.

A quick note on the water: it’s about average temperature for late August, so no wetsuit anxiety yet.

Wednesday the 26th sees the swell peak, but the quality takes a hit. The morning is 7 ft from the SSW with a 17-second period (combined energy 2679), but a cross-shore wind will put some crinkle on the face. That’s a lot of power for the average punter—over 5 ft, it starts getting spicy for beginners. By the afternoon, a strong cross-onshore blows it out, and the 10 ft swell (combined energy 5299) is a messy, choppy beast.

Thursday the 27th is a write-off. Howling onshore winds from the NE at 28-31 mph destroy the 5 ft to 6 ft swell. Not worth paddling out.

There’s a long quiet spell from Friday the 28th right through to Sunday the 30th of August. The swell drops right off, and winds are mostly onshore or too strong. A tiny 1 ft on the Sunday morning with offshore wind is barely a ripple (combined energy 29).

We get a second pulse starting Monday the 31st of August. The morning brings 5 ft from the SW on a mid-period 9-second swell, but the wind is a nice gentle offshore. Combined energy is 369—moderate but fun-sized. The afternoon stays clean with a moderate offshore, offering 4 ft of rambling, clean lines for a lazy session.

After that, it’s a mixed bag through to the first week of September. Tuesday the 1st has a clean 3 ft morning, then onshore junk in the afternoon. Wednesday and Thursday are mostly blown out or too small.

Now, look ahead to Saturday the 5th of September. The morning is looking promising: 5 ft from the S on a 10-second swell, with a light offshore breeze. The combined energy is 556, and the surface will be clean. That’s a solid, user-friendly size for a weekend surf.

But the real firecracker comes on Sunday the 6th of September. The morning delivers a clean 6 ft from the SSW, with a very long 14-second period. Combined energy hits 1287, and the light cross-off wind means it will be groomed. Whispering Waves, being a point, will handle this long-period groundswell beautifully—expect long, peeling walls and easier paddling between sets. This is the second standout of the whole period.

Finally, Monday the 7th of September morning is for the crew only. The swell is 7 ft from the SSE (over 8 ft for experts), with a short 8-second period and a gentle offshore. The combined energy is 1434, meaning plenty of grunt. That short period at that size will pitch and throw. Not for the faint-hearted, but if you’ve got the skills, it’s on.

So, bottom line: the best windows are Tuesday the 25th of August (morning and afternoon) and Sunday the 6th of September (morning). A couple of fun, clean sessions in between, but those two dates are the ones to circle. The long gap from Thursday the 27th to Monday the 31st of August is a quiet stretch, so plan around that.

Rusty.
