The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty here.
Let’s be straight with you. The next couple of days are flat and pretty uninspiring, so you can leave the board in the shed for now. The first real glimmer of something rideable shows up Monday afternoon the 18th, but it’s barely enough to get excited about—small, short-period leftovers with a bit of cross-off wind. It’s surfable for a keen log, but you won’t be missing much.
After that, the ocean switches off again until Thursday the 20th. That’s a solid three-day lull where you’re better off fixing dings or just watching the horizon. Then things start to wake up.
Thursday morning the 20th is where it begins to get interesting. The swell jumps to 6ft, and the wind is proper offshore out of the southwest. It’s still a short-period 8-second wind swell, so it’s a bit lumpy and not the cleanest, but it’s the first real push. The energy is moderate at 609, and there’s enough push to get some fun ones if you’re an intermediate and don’t mind a bit of work. The water’s sitting at 67°, which is about average for this time of year—no surprise there.
Thursday afternoon the swell pushes up to 8ft and the energy rockets to 2710, which is strong, but the period is still only 14 seconds and the wind goes cross-off. This is getting into the too-big-for-beginners territory, and with the exposed point setup, it’s going to be a handful even for the experienced crew. It’s a lot of water moving around, and I’d say only the guys who really know what they’re doing should be out there.
Friday the 21st is a write-off with onshore wind and messy conditions. Saturday the 22nd has that short-period swell again, around 6ft but only 7 seconds, so it’s weak and gutless—just a lot of whitewater, not much shape. Not worth the effort.
Now, the real standout of this whole run is Sunday morning the 23rd. This is the one you want to circle on the calendar. We’ve got a clean 6ft southwest swell, 13-second period, and the wind is dead glassy—totally still air. The energy is strong at 1099, and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is proper point surf, groomed and lined up. It’s not for the learner, but if you’ve got a bit of experience, this is the best session of the whole window. The only downside is the crowds can be an issue at this spot from time to time, so get in early.
Monday the 24th keeps the quality going. Morning sees 6ft, 14-second SW swell with light offshore wind—another excellent session with strong energy at 1208. The afternoon drops slightly to 5ft but stays clean. Tuesday the 25th is still solid, with 6ft and 13 seconds in the morning and a moderate offshore breeze. It’s very good, but not the standout of the week.
After that, we drift into quieter, less reliable territory. The end of August and into the first days of September is mostly small, with onshore winds and poor quality. There’s a brief bump on the 29th and 30th with 3ft waves and offshore wind, but it’s nothing special—just fun grovelly waves for the logs. The big energy comes back on Monday the 31st, but it’s accompanied by rain and cross-shore winds, and by the 1st of September it’s blown out and messy.
So, to sum it up: the window starts slow, has one proper standout on Sunday the 23rd, and a couple of good days either side of it. For the second week, it’s mostly smaller and less consistent, so temper your expectations. The main event is Sunday morning.
Stay stoked.
Rusty.
