The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down. Only one spot in the mix here, but when it’s on, it’s a gem.
Whispering Waves is a south-facing point that loves a solid southerly swell. It’s a bit of a fickle spot, only breaking when everything lines up, so you’ve got to be ready to move. The water temp is hanging around average for this time of year, nothing crazy.
The first proper window is early Sunday morning, August 23rd. We’ve got a clean 6ft SSW swell rolling in with a 10-second period and a moderate offshore breeze. The combined energy hits 675 – that’s a solid, worthwhile push. It’s going to be good, but don’t be surprised if a few others have the same idea.
Sunday afternoon holds the same size and direction, just a touch less energy (607) and a cross-offshore wind, still clean. Nice.
Monday the 24th drops off hard. We’re looking at a tiny 2ft to 3ft SW swell. It’s clean with a light cross-off breeze, but it’s a real ankle-biter. Not the day to go charging.
Then Tuesday the 25th. This is the big one. The morning kicks off with a 6ft SSW swell, afternoon bumps to 6ft, and the period gets long – 15 to 17 seconds of pure groundswell. The energy readings are massive: 1468 and 1989. That’s real power. Winds are offshore and moderate. This is a day for experienced surfers only. The swell is over 5ft, and with that long period, it’s going to be a fast, walling point break. If you’re not confident, watch from the beach. The long period will make it line up beautifully, but the paddle out will be a mission between sets.
Wednesday the 26th brings a jump in size to 8ft and then 10ft, but it’s all onshore, choppy, and messy. The energy is extreme (3683 and 5313), but the wind is killing it. This is more of a kite-surfing window than paddle surfing. The same goes for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday – constant onshore NE wind, 3ft to 5ft of messy SW swell. It’s a write-off.
Sunday the 30th of August sees a glimmer of hope. A 7ft SW swell with a short 7-second period and offshore wind. The energy is moderate (492). It’s a fun, punchy option, but the short period means it’ll be a bit bouncy and close out in sections. The afternoon gets a 8ft SSW swell, a bit more period (9 seconds), and a cross-off breeze – still clean, but the forecast is a bit iffy.
The 31st of August is small and clean, but nothing to get excited about.
The start of September is a mixed bag. The 1st is a no-go with onshore winds. The 2nd of September has a morning of short-period, onshore junk, but the afternoon turns it around: a 4ft SSW swell, 13-second period, and a moderate offshore wind. The energy is 937 – a solid, clean, fun wave. The 4th of September Friday afternoon is another good window: 6ft SSW swell, 12-second period, gentle cross-offshore breeze, and a combined energy of 1051. That’s excellent for experienced surfers.
The 6th of September Sunday morning is a surprise: a 7ft easterly swell with a 9-second period, light cross-offshore wind, and a massive energy reading of 1520. The direction is off for the optimum at Whispering Waves, but the wind is offshore and clean, making it rideable. The 7th of September Monday morning brings it back home: a 6ft SSW swell, 13-second period, and a moderate offshore wind. Energy at 1083. That’s a top-tier session.
The two true standouts in this whole 16-day run are Tuesday the 25th of August (the big, long-period groundswell) and Friday the 4th of September afternoon (the clean, powerful combination). Don’t waste your time on the blown-out days in between.
Rusty.
