The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu at Mntafufu. This is a beach and reef setup, exposed to the swell, and the water temp is sitting at 71°F, which is right about average for this time of year – nothing unusual there. The whole run kicks off on Sunday the 19th of July and stretches all the way to the 3rd of August.
The first standout comes right out of the gate. On Sunday afternoon the 19th of July, Mntafufu is looking absolute magic. We’ve got a clean 4ft swell rolling in from the SSE with an 11-second period, combined energy is moderate (863), and the wind is glassy from the east. That’s as clean as it gets. It’s inconsistent, so you might need a bit of patience, but when a set comes through, the shape should be solid for an intermediate surfer.
Monday the 20th of July is another cracker. The morning sees a touch more size at 6ft from the SE, 12-second period, and the wind is a light cross-off from the SSW. The energy jumps into the moderate range (1136). By the afternoon, the wind goes glass again, with 5ft SE swell. Both sessions are for experienced surfers given the size and power. This is the best two-day window on offer.
Tuesday the 21st of July holds good quality, with 4ft SE swell and glassy conditions all day, but the swell energy eases a bit (726 and 680). Still very clean and fun.
Now, things go a bit average from Wednesday the 22nd of July through to Monday the 27th of July. Winds turn cross-onshore and pick up, chop develops, and the swell direction shifts around. There’s plenty of size on the 23rd and 24th, especially Thursday afternoon with 7ft SSW swell, but that period is a short 8 seconds and winds are cross-off, not ideal for the peak. It’s doable but not worth getting excited about. Friday the 24th afternoon has a 4ft SSW swell with a very long 18-second period – that’s a groundswell, and combined energy jumps to 1392, but the cross-onshore wind messes the surface. Mntafufu being a beach and reef, that long period might also break a bit straight at the beach, so it’s a tricky one.
Saturday the 25th and most of the 26th is a write-off: strong onshore NE winds, lumpy and choppy.
We get a bit of a breather on Tuesday the 28th of July – 7ft S swell with 10-second period and clean cross-off wind, but the heavy rain and big cross-chop later in the day makes it a marginal call. The energy is still moderate (1029-1345).
Now, here’s the real highlight after that long lull. Wednesday the 29th of July is a standout morning. We get a solid 7ft S swell, 14-second period (groundswell), with light offshore wind from the west. Combined energy is a strong 1774. By the afternoon it goes glassy with 6ft S swell and energy spikes to 2365. This is peak conditions for experienced surfers – big, powerful, and clean. The long period groundswell will favour the reef sections of Mntafufu, so expect longer gaps between sets but proper waves when they come.
After that, the final few days of July and the start of August get messy again. Thursday the 30th through Sunday the 2nd of August see a mix of rain, onshore winds, and lumpy conditions. A mention for Sunday the 2nd of August morning: 8ft ENE swell with 10-second period, light cross-off from the NW, and combined energy is very strong (2549). That’s expert-only size and a powerful swell, clean conditions, but the long-term forecast means it’s less certain. Monday the 3rd of August looks to fall apart with onshore winds again.
If I’ve got to pick the best, I’m taking Wednesday the 29th of July – that’s the one. Solid groundswell, glassy or offshore wind, and big energy. Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th of July are your next best bets for clean, fun waves.
Rusty.
