The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The surf window opens up Tuesday morning, August 4th, at Millars Point. It’s a sheltered point break, so it takes a bit of work to get clean lines, but when it’s on, it’s a gem. Water temp is sitting at 63°, which is a solid 4° cooler than normal for this time of year – you’ll be wanting a thicker wetsuit, no question.
Tuesday morning is a bit of a write-off: cross-shore breeze, 5 ft swell from the ESE, and the energy is moderate at best (543). But the afternoon session? That’s where it starts to turn. The wind drops to dead glassy, 4 ft of swell, still ESE, but with that flat water it’s going to feel way better. That’s a quiet, clean session if you can get out.
Wednesday morning is a bit choppy again, but Wednesday afternoon brings the first real standout. You’ve got a 3 ft swell from the SSW, but the period jumps to 16 seconds – that’s proper groundswell, long lines, plenty of energy. The wind goes light offshore out of the west, and the wave energy is pumping at 808. That’s a gorgeous, clean point break session. This is the pick of the first week.
Thursday and Friday see a building swell – 6 ft to 7 ft on Thursday, then 5 ft to 6 ft on Friday, all from the SSW. Winds are cross-offshore, so the waves stay clean, but the energy is getting serious. Thursday afternoon hits 1460 and Friday afternoon 1294. This is solid intermediate territory; the point will handle it well, but beginners might find it a bit much.
Saturday morning, August 8th, is another standout. Clear skies, light NNW breeze, cross-offshore, and 6 ft SSW swell at 14 seconds. The energy is 1363, and the forecast says very good conditions. This is the morning to be in the water. The afternoon drops off a little as the wind swings and the swell backs off.
Sunday the 9th is a write-off: strong winds, 25–31 mph, light rain, and poor conditions. Monday the 10th is no better – a massive 18 ft SSE swell rolls in, but with 25 mph onshore winds, it’s a mess. The energy is 7022, so there’s power, but it’s not for paddle surfing. If you’re into kiting, this might be your window.
The rest of the first week and into the second is a mixed bag. Tuesday 11th through Thursday 14th sees big, messy swell with onshore winds – 8 ft to 15 ft, all from the ESE, and the wind is on it or cross-on. Not good for the point. This is a gap of several days with no worthwhile surf.
Then Saturday August 15th, morning session: glassy conditions, light west wind, 6 ft E swell at 11 seconds, energy 857. That’s a clean, fun morning. Sunday 16th is smaller but glassy again – 4 ft, 336 energy. Worth a paddle if you’re keen.
Monday 17th brings a new swell direction – SW – and the morning is a bit lumpy, but Monday afternoon cleans up with a 5 ft SW swell, light offshore breeze, and 530 energy. That’s a nice, clean session to round out the window.
Tuesday 18th: strong offshore winds (25 mph from the WSW) and an 8 ft SW swell at 12 seconds. That’s a lot of power, and the wind is strong offshore – it’ll be clean but hard to paddle into, and only for experienced surfers. The energy is 2401. After that, the window fades out with smaller, onshore slop.
So, to sum it up: the best surf is Wednesday August 5th afternoon, with that lovely 16-second groundswell and glassy offshore wind, and Saturday August 8th morning, with clean 6 ft SSW swell. If you’re after a quiet glassy session, Tuesday August 4th afternoon and Saturday August 15th morning are your go-tos. The rest is either blown out, too big, or just average.
