The Lowdown

Alright, let’s break down what’s happening at The Wreck for the next couple of weeks.

We’re in for a slow start, but the end of this week and the weekend are gonna fire up proper. The best surf on offer is going to be Thursday, July 25th, with a standout Saturday morning session on the 27th not far behind.

The Wreck is a sheltered spot that likes a swell out of the SSE, so the long-period SW and SSW groundswells we're seeing are going to wrap in and set up some proper lines. The water temp is right on 63°F, pretty much average for this time of year.

Let’s start with Thursday, the 16th. We’ve got a solid 10ft SW swell rolling in with a 14-second period. Combine that with a light offshore W wind at 3 mph and you’ve got clean, powerful waves. The energy is pumping at 3000 (moderate energy), so this is for experienced surfers only. Thursday afternoon stays clean with 8ft SW and a WSW offshore. Friday the 17th looks even cleaner – 8ft SW swell with glassy conditions in the morning, and 7ft SW in the afternoon with zero wind. Pure glass.

Saturday the 18th drops off to 4ft in the morning, but it picks back up in the afternoon to 6ft SW with glassy winds. Sunday the 19th has a fun afternoon on the cards: 8ft SW, 12 mph offshore wind, and the energy jumps to 2904 (moderate). That afternoon breeze will be a bit strong but still clean. Monday the 20th turns ugly with cross-onshore ESE winds, so the surf quality drops even with the swell. The afternoon is poor, so skip it.

Now, here’s the good stuff. Tuesday the 21st has a beautiful morning with 6ft SSW groundswell, a 15-second period, and glassy conditions. That long period means punchy waves with longer lulls. The energy sits at 1658 (moderate). The afternoon stays clean with a light offshore and 7ft.

The standout: Wednesday, July 22nd, is a ripper. A 13ft SW swell, 13-second period, and a cross-off W wind in the morning. The energy reads 5888 (strong). It’s big, clean, and for experts only. The afternoon holds at 12ft with a gentle offshore. If you can handle it, this is the pick of the first week.

Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th bring a massive swell (15ft on Thursday, 12ft on Friday) but cross-onshore ESE wind ruins the quality. The energy Thursday morning is 7382 (very strong). It’s big and bumpy – kitesurfers might love it, but paddle surfers should wait.

Saturday, July 25th, is the big one. Morning has a 13ft SSW groundswell with a 17-second period – that’s a very long period groundswell. The wind is calm, glassy. The energy is a massive 9624 (very strong). The afternoon stays good with 13ft SW, 16 seconds, and a cross-off. This is expert-only territory. Big, clean, powerful. This is your absolute standout.

Sunday the 26th backs off to 8ft in the morning with glassy conditions, still good, but the wind goes cross-on in the afternoon. Monday the 27th has a lovely clean morning with 5ft SW and a solid offshore; the afternoon is even tidier with 4ft and a clean offshore. A great, manageable day.

The second week is mixed. Tuesday the 30th has a clean 5ft SW in the morning before the wind turns onshore and chops it up. Wednesday the 31st morning stays clean with 6ft SW under offshore winds, but the afternoon gets a moderate cross-off. Thursday the 1st looks clean again with 5ft SW and offshore winds. The standout of that week is Wednesday the 30th morning – clean 6ft with a light offshore. But the real magic is that weekend at the end of the first week. Get out there.
