The Lowdown
Alright, crew, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there are definitely a couple of sessions you’ll want to clear your calendar for.
The main story is a strong, persistent southwest swell train that rolls through for the first few days. We’re looking at a solid start, then a bit of a chop-out mid-period, followed by another promising pulse of energy later on.
Wednesday morning kicks things off in epic style. The Wreck (Big Island) is looking at a powerful 8ft of SW swell, with a period of 12 seconds and light offshore winds. The energy is strong (2213), and the surface is clean. This isn't for the faint of heart – that size is pushing into expert territory, but for those who are ready, it’s going to be firing. The swell holds through the afternoon, even if the wind picks up just a touch.
Thursday is the real standout of this first week. The swell jumps up to a solid 12ft, still from the SW, with a longer 13-second period. The energy reading is off the charts (4592). Both the morning and afternoon sessions look excellent, with clean conditions and light winds. This is a proper, powerful groundswell and The Wreck is going to be handling it beautifully. This is the pick of the week for the experienced crew.
Friday is a write-off. The wind swings around to the east, putting a nasty cross-onshore chop on top of a dropping swell. The energy fades, and the quality just isn’t there. Save your energy.
Saturday morning starts to clean up with a strong offshore, but the swell has backed off to 5ft. However, the afternoon sees a new pulse of 10ft SW swell filling in, and with the wind still offshore, it’s looking very good again.
Sunday is another absolute gem. We’ve got 12ft of SW groundswell, a 13-second period, and glassy conditions all day. The energy is massive (3478), and the surface is going to be like a lake. This is a serious, world-class day at The Wreck. As good as Thursday was, this Sunday might just top it.
Monday settles down again with smaller, but still clean, surf in the 3 to 6ft range, perfect for the intermediates to get a piece of it.
Tuesday gets messy again as the east winds return, creating lumpy conditions. Then Wednesday cleans back up with some fun, glassy 6ft waves.
Thursday, the 27th, throws in a curveball. The morning is small, but the afternoon brings an 8ft, 9-second period swell. That shorter period means it might be a little less organized, but with glassy conditions, it could still be a fun, punchy session.
Friday and Saturday see the surf drop out a bit, with the last couple of days of August looking pretty weak. But then, we start seeing something on the horizon.
Sunday, the 29th, the big swell comes back. We're looking at 8ft in the morning, jumping to a significant 12ft in the afternoon. The period is a very long 15 seconds, which means serious, raw energy (5141). The winds are forecast to be offshore, so it should be absolutely cranking. This is a long-range call, so we need to keep an eye on it, but it’s looking like a phenomenal end to the month. This is your second standout.
That leads into the first week of September. Monday the 30th and the 31st are blown out by a strong east wind and rain – a total mess. Don't bother.
We then see conditions finally stabilize again. Tuesday the 1st of September looks good with a fresh offshore wind and a solid 8ft to 8ft of SW swell. Then Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd, we’ve got one more massive pulse on the cards. The data shows a huge 18ft SW swell with a 14-second period arriving on Thursday morning, with glassy conditions. The energy is enormous (12250).
But here’s the thing: that’s a lot of water. The reports say it may just be too big for The Wreck. For a spot that’s already handling 11ft, this could be a real washing machine. It might be one for the true big-wave crew only, or maybe a day to watch from the rocks. We'll see how it shapes up. Until then, I’ll be looking for that glassy Sunday.
Rusty out.
