The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. We’ve only got one spot with a proper forecast in this window, so let’s dial into Left Point and see what’s cooking. It’s a point break, inconsistent, but when it turns on, it can be a gem. The water is sitting at about 56° right now, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
The outlook starts on Tuesday afternoon, August 18th. We’ll see some cross-off wind from the SE at 6 mph with a clean 4ft SW swell rolling in. The period is a solid 14 seconds, which is proper groundswell. Combined wave energy is 672, so we’ve got moderate power behind it. Expect very good surf conditions to kick things off – a nice start. Crowds can be an issue here sometimes, so pick your moment.
Wednesday the 19th goes to crap with strong onshore winds and rain. A couple of days of messy, choppy junk follow through Thursday and Friday, even though the swell sticks around. The energy builds, but the wind just wrecks it. Friday afternoon the 21st sees the energy hit 1064 (moderate to strong), but it’s still lumpy and cross-shore.
Saturday morning the 22nd is for experts only. The swell jumps to 8ft with a 16-second period from the SW, and the energy is massive at 3225. The wind is still a bit messy in the morning, but by Saturday afternoon, it cleans right up. We get 8ft SW groundswell, a cross-off breeze, and clean conditions. The energy is still 2785. This is your standout for the early period – excellent for experienced surfers.
Sunday the 23rd offers decent 7ft and 7ft SW swells, but the wind is off and on, making it a bit lumpy. Monday the 24th is a write-off with fresh cross-onshore wind.
Tuesday the 25th brings a little hope with 5ft and 5ft SW swells and clean cross-off wind, but the period is dropping to 12-13 seconds, so it’s not as powerful. Marginal but rideable.
We get another nasty spell mid-week, with strong winds and poor conditions through Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th. But hold on – Thursday afternoon brings a massive 10ft WSW swell with 28 mph winds. Even though it’s “clean” from a wind perspective, that’s a full-on gale, and it’s going to be a washing machine. Not for paddling.
Then comes the big one. Friday morning, August 28th. Offshore wind from the SSW at 19 mph, a solid 12ft SW swell with a 16-second period, and 6127 combined energy. That is very strong. The data says it might be too big for this break, but for an expert on a point, this is a monster session if you can handle it. Clean, offshore, and powerful. This is the ultimate standout of the whole forecast – but it’s a serious beast. Friday afternoon is still excellent, with 10ft and clean offshore wind.
Saturday the 29th is still pumping with 12ft and 10ft SW swells, clean cross-off wind, and strong energy. Again, big and for experts only.
After that, the swell backs down into the 6ft to 3ft range through the end of the month and into early September. Winds are light and variable, and the conditions clean up nicely. The very end of the forecast on Monday afternoon, August 31st, is worth a mention: glassy conditions, 4ft SW swell with a 17-second period, 1233 energy. That’s a dreamy point-break session. The first few days of September look mostly clean as well, with good wave heights. It’s a long-range promise, so keep an eye on it.
Overall, the best waves are Saturday the 22nd afternoon for big clean fun, and Friday the 28th morning for the real heavy hitters. The rest is a mix of waiting out the wind or enjoying the smaller, cleaner days.
Stay shifty.
