The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's shaping up for Left Point over the next couple of weeks.
It's a bit of a slow start, to be honest. The first couple of days are pretty average. Sunday the 23rd has some swell, but the morning is messy with a cross-onshore breeze making things choppy. The afternoon cleans right up though – glassy conditions and a solid 6.2 ft SW swell rolling in. The energy is moderate (1895), but the waves will be clean and lined up. This is a decent little window for the experienced crew, but the inconsistent nature of this point means you've gotta be patient for the sets.
Monday the 24th is a write-off with strong cross-onshore winds and lumpy conditions, so give it a miss. Tuesday the 25th morning is average with cross-shore wind and rain, but the afternoon glass-off is the real deal – light offshore wind, clean 4.9 ft SW swell and a healthy energy reading of 1091. That's a standout session for the intermediate crew.
Wednesday the 26th has clean conditions in the morning with a cross-offshore breeze and a decent 5.9 ft SW groundswell. The afternoon turns proper offshore with 12 mph wind and 5.2 ft swell – good shape and energy. These are solid sessions, but again, it's inconsistent, so pick your windows.
Thursday the 27th drops right off – small and weak, not worth paddling out. Friday the 28th sees a pulse of long-period groundswell (18 seconds) but with cross-shore wind and chop. It's messy despite the size (6.9 ft) and high energy (2691). The long period means it'll be powerful but breaking a bit straight at this point break – still, for the experts, there's potential if the wind plays ball. It doesn't really, so I'd call it marginal.
Saturday the 29th is more clean in the afternoon with a cross-offshore breeze, but the swell is dropping. Not a standout.
Now, Sunday the 30th is the one to circle. Morning has clean conditions and a solid 7.5 ft SW groundswell with 16-second period – energy is pumping at 2570. The afternoon gets even better: light offshore wind, glassy, same size swell, and excellent conditions for experienced surfers. This is the best of the forecast period. Crowds are sometimes an issue at Left Point, and with conditions like this, expect a few locals out, but the waves will be worth the company.
Monday the 31st has size but cross-onshore wind messes it up a bit. Still, 6.6-6.9 ft SW groundswell is rolling. Not as clean as Sunday.
The first week of September looks rough. Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd are blown out with fresh to strong cross-onshore winds and lumpy seas. Thursday the 3rd is the same – strong winds, messy, not worth it. There's a big gap of poor conditions from Monday the 1st through to Thursday the 4th morning.
Friday the 4th afternoon finally sees a change – offshore wind, clean, but only 4.6 ft SW swell with moderate energy (524). It's small but clean, so a decent option for a longboard or fish.
Saturday the 5th afternoon looks promising again: light offshore breeze, clean, 4.6 ft SW swell. Not huge, but clean waves.
Sunday the 6th morning is average with cross-onshore wind, but the afternoon glass-off delivers – glassy conditions, 6.2 ft SW swell, energy at 1521. Excellent for experienced surfers. That's another strong window.
Monday the 7th is a monster day but dangerous. 7.9-9.8 ft SW swell with near gale force winds – way too big and blown out for paddle surfing. This is kite territory if anything.
So, overall, the real standouts are Sunday afternoon the 30th of August and Sunday afternoon the 6th of September. Both offer clean, glassy conditions with solid SW groundswell and excellent wave quality for experienced surfers. The inconsistent nature of Left Point means you've gotta pick your moments, but these two windows are the best on offer.
Water temp is around 56.1°F – about average for this time of year, so a decent 4/3 wetsuit will do.
Stay patient, pick your windows, and I'll see you out there.
