Table - best surf conditions forecast for Left Point over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got a look at what’s coming up for Left Point. Honestly, the next couple of weeks are a tough watch. There’s a massive, powerful SW groundswell arriving right from the start, but the wind and conditions are gonna make it a real challenge for most days.
The big story is the swell from Monday the 13th through Thursday the 17th. It’s pumping – solid 12ft of SW swell with a very long 15-16 second period, pumping out huge energy values (5503-6142). This is proper groundswell, and it’s got plenty of push. The problem? For the first three days (Monday 13th to Wednesday 15th morning), the wind is a strong cross-shore, making a messy cross-chop. It’s not the surf you want. The good news starts to pop up on Tuesday afternoon the 14th – the wind swings to a clean cross-offshore, but the swell is still a hefty 12ft. At that size, only experienced surfers should even think about it. By Wednesday afternoon the 15th, we’ve got a cleaner cross-off breeze with 8ft swell (2166 energy), but it’s still in the “marginal” category.
Now, if you’re an experienced surfer, look hard at Thursday afternoon the 16th (7ft, 14s SW) and Friday afternoon the 17th. Those are the standouts. Friday afternoon the 17th has absolute perfection: glassy, flat calm conditions with a clean 7ft SW groundswell (period 16 seconds). It’ll be clean, powerful, and the long period will make paddling out easier. The water temp is sitting at 57° – about average for this time of year, so a good 4/3 wetsuit is your mate. Keep in mind, Left Point can be inconsistent and it’s a point break that favours a WSW swell direction, but we’re getting SW here. That long period groundswell will wrap in nicely for a point, but it can also break a bit too straight. Crowds are possible here, but when it’s on like that, it’s worth it.
After that, the swell drops off fast. From Saturday the 18th onward, we’re looking at smaller, weak energy (349-975) with mostly cross-onshore winds and choppy, poor surf. There’s a stretch of several days – from the 18th right through to the 24th – where conditions are just poor or marginal. Not much to write home about. You’ll see a bump on Friday morning the 24th with a 4ft swell and a very long 19-second period (1539 energy), but the wind is a fresh cross-shore with a lumpy chop. Still marginal.
The last few days of the window, from the 26th to the 28th, show some solid size returning – 8ft to 13ft – but the wind is all over the place: strong cross-shore, onshore, and messy. That’s big, unruly stuff for experts only, and with the short period (10 seconds) on the 28th, it’ll be a washing machine. Probably more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those days.
So, for the best shot: lock in Thursday afternoon the 16th for clean, glassy conditions and a solid 7ft SW swell, but the true standout is Friday afternoon the 17th – glassy, calm, with a clean 7ft SW groundswell. That’s the one. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
