The Lowdown
Alright, it’s been a bit of a wait, but the first real chance to get wet is Sunday afternoon, the 19th of July. Left Point is the only game in town, and it’s a tricky little number. It’s a point break that’s inconsistent, so don’t expect a wave every set. The water is about 57°F, which is pretty much normal for this time of year.
Sunday afternoon sees a small 3ft SW groundswell, with a long 12-second period. The wind is a light cross-onshore, not ideal, but the combined energy is moderate (371). It’s borderline, but there’s a chance for a sneaky session.
Monday and Tuesday are a write-off. The wind picks up and the conditions are poor, so don’t bother paddling out.
Wednesday the 22nd gets a bit of a kicking. The swell builds to 6ft from the WSW, but the wind is still messy. The afternoon does see a clean face with a cross-offshore breeze, but the period drops to 9 seconds, making it a bit weak. The energy is moderate (730). It’s not great, but it’s surfable.
Then we get hit by a big pulse. From Thursday the 23rd through the weekend, the swell pumps up to 10ft to 12ft from the SW, with strong to very strong wave energy (4038 to 5975). This is expert territory only. The wind is howling, mostly cross or cross-off, making it messy and dangerous. Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning are clean, but with a near gale blowing, it’s going to be a battle. Honestly, at this size with that wind, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The first real standout comes on Saturday the 25th afternoon. The wind goes clean offshore from the SW, the swell is a hefty 10ft, and the energy is pumping (4941). It’s a strong offshore breeze, making it hard to paddle into, but the waves will be perfect barrels for the experienced crew. The crowd factor is a *sometimes* thing, so you might have it to yourself if you’re brave.
Sunday the 26th is the best of the early run. A gentle offshore breeze from the SW, the swell drops to a more manageable 6ft, and the energy is moderate (997). It’s clean, and the waves should have some good shape. This is the one to circle for the second week.
The first week of August looks promising. Monday the 3rd is another standout. The wind is a clean moderate offshore from the S and SSW, with a solid 5ft SW groundswell (16-second period). The combined energy is a solid moderate (1397-1419). This is a classic point break session, long-period swell which will really wrap into the point. This is the best on offer.
The rest of the second week has some smaller windows, like the 29th of July with a 8ft WSW swell and fresh offshore wind, but it’s a bit big and the wind is strong. The 2nd of August has a very long period 4ft swell (19 seconds) from the SW with a strong offshore, but it’s a hard paddle and the waves may be a bit too straight for a beach break setup.
Overall, it’s a slow start, but there are two gems to chase: the gentle offshore day on the 26th of July, and the classic long-period groundswell on the 3rd of August. Get out there.
Rusty.
