Alright crew, Rusty here. The picture for Left Point starts off pretty wild. For the first few days, we've got a serious amount of energy in the water – we're talking a massive 10,724 (combined energy) on Friday the 3rd, but the wind is just howling from the west at 31 mph. That's a near gale, cross-offshore, which makes it a write-off. Don't even bother paddling out. That big, clean swell is just getting shredded.
The weekend isn't much better for the average surfer. Saturday the 4th is still messy with fresh breeze, but by the afternoon the wind swings offshore from the southwest at 19 mph. You've got 8 ft of SW groundswell (13-second period) coming in, but the combined energy is moderate (2,180). It’s clean and rideable for the experienced surfer, but the swell is a bit lumpy for the less confident. Sunday the 5th goes cross-shore, which ruins the line-up.
Now, here’s a little beacon of hope. Monday the 6th afternoon looks decent. The wind drops to a slight air from the southeast (3 mph), going cross-offshore, and we get a clean 4 ft SW groundswell. The energy is weak (726), so it's not going to be pumping, but for a glassy, clean afternoon session on a point break, you could find a few fun ones. That’s your pick for the first week if you’re keen on something gentle.
We get a bit of a clean-up on Wednesday the 8th. The afternoon sees an offshore breeze from the south at 12 mph, with a 7 ft SW groundswell. This is where the period hits 18 seconds – that's proper long-period groundswell energy. It'll be powerful, with good shape, and the combined energy is moderate (2,748). This is for experienced surfers; anything over 8 ft on a point break gets serious fast. This is the standout of the first week.
Then it gets a bit inconsistent and choppy again through the 9th and 10th, though Friday the 10th afternoon goes glassy with a slight air from the NNW. The swell is 5 ft and weak energy (1,054), so it's clean but small. It's worth a look if you're desperate.
Now, the real headline act. A week from Tuesday, on the 14th of July, Left Point is going to get hammered. We're looking at 15 ft of SW swell with 10-second period. The wind is cross-offshore, but the combined energy is whopping (4,229). The file says it's too big for this break, and it’s right. This is solid expert territory, and it's going to be a washing machine along the point. If you're not a charger, stay on the beach. The 15th and 16th are also blown out by strong winds from the southeast. It calms down towards the 18th, but the swell is tiny at 2 ft.
Crowds at Left Point are a "sometimes" thing, but with the big swells, it'll be a crew of local chargers only. The water temp is 58°F, which is about normal for the time of year.
So, if you’re looking for the best on offer: Wednesday the 8th afternoon is your cleanest, punchiest day for an experienced surfer. For a relaxed session, Monday the 6th afternoon or Friday the 10th glass-off are your best bets. The big stuff on the 14th is only for the brave.
Rusty.
