Table - best surf conditions forecast for Left Point over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening at Left Point.
We’ve got a solid, though imperfect, run of swell headed our way. This is not a clean, easy-going stretch. The first week is dominated by powerful, oversized surf that’s going to demand respect and a good read on conditions. The water temp here is sitting at about 56.7°F, right about average for July, so nothing wild there.
Sunday, July 12th kicks off with a heavy pulse. We’re looking at a heavy 9.8ft swell out of the WSW. But the wind is a mess – a near-gale from the NW at 31 mph raking across the point. The wave energy is intense, reading at 2218 in the morning and ramping right up. This is a write-off for paddling; honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than a proper point-break session.
Monday, July 13th is even bigger. Swell bumps up to 11.5ft from the SW, and the period stretches out to 15 to 16 seconds. That’s a deep, powerful groundswell. The combined energy jumps to a massive 5548 and then 6126. But again, the wind is howling from the NW at 28 mph. It’s messy, cross-shore, and just ugly. Way too big for beginners, and even for experts, the wind kills any chance of a clean line.
Then we get a glimmer. Tuesday morning, July 14th. The wind finally drops to 19 mph from the W, going cross-offshore. The swell is still a thumping 11.5ft with a 16-second period, and the combined energy is a colossal 9531. The report says it’s too big for this break. That’s a big wave session for experienced surfers only, and even then, that long period on a point could make it a bit straight. The afternoon cleans up a little, dropping to 9.8ft, but it’s only marginal.
Wednesday, July 15th morning is still a write-off, but the afternoon is where we start to see hope. The swell drops to a much more manageable 7.5ft from the SW, with a 14-second interval. The wind turns cross-offshore from the WSW at just 9 mph. The report says excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers. That’s the first window. Clean, powerful, but you need to be on your game.
Thursday, July 16th is steady. Morning is a bit bumpy with a light cross-on, but the afternoon is a standout. The wind drops to glassy – dead calm from the WSW. The swell sits at 6.9ft from the SW with a 14-second period. For a point break, that glassy surface is everything. It’s still a solid wave, best for experienced surfers, but the conditions will be incredible.
Friday, July 17th repeats the pattern. Glassy conditions in the afternoon. Swell is 6.9ft to 7.2ft from the SW with that long 16-second period. This is another premium window. The energy is still strong at around 2255.
The surf starts to fade over the weekend. Saturday, July 18th sees the swell dip to 4.9ft, and the wind turns back onshore. By Sunday, July 19th, we’re down to tiny 2.0ft to 3.0ft swells with fresh onshore wind. A real drop-off.
Monday, July 20th sees another pulse of energy, a 9.8ft swell returns in the afternoon, but with a shorter 12-second period and moderate cross-shore wind. It’s messy.
Tuesday, July 21st afternoon is another little gem for the second week. The swell is a clean 5.9ft from the SW, the wind is gentle and cross-offshore from the WSW. The report says to expect very good surf conditions. This is a solid, clean, manageable wave for a good surfer.
The rest of the week falls apart a bit. The swell drops low and the wind clocks around onshore. Thursday, July 23rd afternoon has a clean offshore wind from the SSW at 16 mph but with only 3.3ft of swell. Too small for much.
We have one more promising run. Looking ahead to the following week, Saturday, July 25th afternoon looks excellent. We get a 6.9ft swell from the SW with a 16-second period. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the SE at 6 mph. That’s a long-range standout – beautiful, clean lines. Sunday, July 26th afternoon is also glassy, with 6.2ft of swell from the SW. Both of these are promising.
So, to wrap it up. The best surf on offer? Thursday, July 16th afternoon and Friday, July 17th afternoon in the first week are your absolute best bets for glassy, powerful waves. In the second week, Monday, July 21st afternoon is a solid, clean session, and Saturday, July 25th afternoon and Sunday, July 26th afternoon are promising long-range gems if the forecast holds. Crowds are listed as “sometimes” here
