The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run of south-west groundswell on the cards for Left Point, but it’s not a straight-forward outlook—the wind’s going to play havoc for much of the run, and the size will push things into expert territory at times.
The action kicks off Thursday the 16th with a good pulse of swell. We’re looking at 8ft from the SW with a long 15-second period, and the combined energy out there is pumping at a strong 2416. The morning has a cross-off breeze, and by afternoon it goes clean offshore from the SW at 6 mph. The waves will be clean and powerful—this is excellent surf, but at this size, it’s for experienced surfers only. Crowds can be a nuisance here sometimes, so get on it early.
Friday the 17th sees a slight drop to 7ft, still from the SW with a 16-second period (energy 2275), but the morning is cross-on from the NNW at 9 mph and the afternoon goes light cross-shore. The wind messes with the quality, so it’s a marginal day.
Saturday the 18th starts ordinary with 6ft and cross-on wind, but the afternoon is the standout: the wind drops to glassy calm, with 5ft swell from the SW at 13 seconds (energy 880). This will be clean, fun-size surf, and for an inconsistent point break like Left Point, that’s a rare treat.
Sunday the 19th through to Thursday the 24th is a long stretch of poor conditions. The swell drops to 3–4ft, but the wind is nearly always cross-on or onshore, and the energy fades to weak levels (as low as 262). There’s a brief moment on the afternoon of Wednesday the 22nd with glassy conditions and 4ft swell, but it’s marginal at best.
Friday the 24th is a big return of swell—8ft from the SW, 14-second period, energy of 3964 in the afternoon—but the wind is a strong 28 mph, causing a mess in the morning. The afternoon has a strong cross-off breeze, which cleans it up, but the power is extreme and only for experts.
The best stretch for experienced surfers is Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th. Saturday brings 7–7ft from the SW with 15 seconds (energy 2038) and a fresh offshore from the SSW at 19–22 mph—clean, powerful lines. Sunday drops a touch to 6–7ft, with light offshore wind in the morning and a gentle cross-off in the afternoon. The afternoon on the 26th has energy of 1498 and is rated excellent for experienced surfers.
Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th go ugly again, with onshore winds over 19 mph and consistent 7–7ft swell (energy over 1400)—messy and poor.
Wednesday the 29th afternoon sees a clean-up, with 6ft from the SW at 11 seconds and a moderate offshore from the SSW at 12 mph (energy 850). Then Thursday the 30th morning is another highlight: 6ft from the WSW at 12 seconds, clean offshore from the SW at 16 mph (energy 1018). These are good quality windows.
Overall, the standout is Thursday afternoon the 16th and Saturday morning the 26th for clean, powerful groundswell. The water temperature is unremarkable—nothing unusual for this time of year.
Rusty.
