The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
We’ve got a solid window of surf at Left Point kicking off now, but it’s a mixed bag. The first real standout is Friday afternoon, July 17th. The swell is a strong 7 ft from the SW, but the real magic is the wind – it’s dead glassy. That’s the kind of surface you dream about. The energy is pumping at a hefty 2381, and the water temp is sitting at 56°, which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year. The swell period is a long 16 seconds, so it’s a proper groundswell with plenty of punch. Left Point is a point break, so it will handle that long period beautifully. Just keep in mind, it’s over 5 ft, so it’s a bit much for beginners, and the spot is inconsistent and can get crowded *sometimes*, so get on it early.
The run-up to the next good one is a bit of a washout. Saturday morning is chop, and the energy drops. Sunday and Monday look messy with cross-onshore winds and poor quality. Honestly, it’s a few days of frustration until we get to Thursday morning, July 23rd. That’s a real standout. The swell bumps up to 8 ft from the SW, with a clean moderate offshore wind pouring down from the SW. The energy is massive at 2066, and the period is 14 seconds of solid groundswell. This is excellent surf, but that 8 ft is getting into expert territory – it’s big, powerful, and for experienced surfers only. The offshore wind makes it clean, but it will be a battle to get out.
Friday, July 24th gets ugly with a 10 ft SW swell and howling cross-shore winds. The energy numbers are wild (5447 on Friday arvo), but it’s a total mess. That’s more of a kite session than a paddle session. The following week, from July 25th onwards, is a tough watch. There’s plenty of swell, but the wind is almost always onshore or cross-shore, ruining the shape. The one thing that stands out in the second week is Saturday morning, August 1st. It’s got a clean 6 ft SW groundswell (16 seconds) with a strong offshore wind, but that wind is howling at 28 mph. It’s clean, but it’s a battle to paddle into and the energy is strong (1881). Not a casual day, but if you’re a charger, it’s your only real option in that second week.
Best on offer? Friday afternoon the 17th – glassy, solid, and clean. Then Thursday morning the 23rd – big, clean, and thumping. The rest is a grind.
Rusty.
