The Lowdown
Right then, let’s talk about what’s on the cards for Left Point. It’s a point break, intermediate territory, but it’s inconsistent, so you gotta be patient. The first half of the window is a washout for us surfers. Nothing good on offer until Thursday July 16th, so that's a couple of days gap to sit out.
Looking further ahead, the real standout is Thursday July 16th. That morning, we’ve got a SW swell at 8 ft, period of 15 seconds—that’s proper groundswell energy, with a combined energy of 2278 (moderate wave energy). The wind is a light cross-offshore breeze, and the surf will be clean. This is excellent for experienced surfers; it’s not for beginners as the swell is over 5 ft. The lefts should have good shape, though that long period can make it break a bit straight on a beach setup, but for a point like this, it’s a dream. Crowds are possible here, so keep an eye out.
The water temp is 57° with a tiny anomaly of 0.7°, so it’s pretty normal for this time of year—nothing wild there.
The second week gets a bit iffy. Friday July 24th sees a big WNW wind at 28 mph with swell up to 8 ft, but it’s cross-onshore and messy—definitely not for the paddle crew. That might be more interesting for the kite surfers. By Saturday July 25th, the wind calms and goes cross-offshore, but the quality is still marginal. The very end of the run on Sunday July 26th afternoon looks promising again: a 5 ft SW swell with a light offshore wind and 13-second period, clean surf, and lower energy (796). That’s a nice little window to finish on.
So, to sum up: Thursday July 16th is your best bet—clean, solid groundswell at Left Point. After that, keep an eye on the 26th for a cleaner but smaller session. Everything else is either too windy or too small.
Rusty.
