The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what we’ve got coming through for Left Point. I’m Rusty, and I’m calling it straight.
The overall pattern is a solid run of south-west groundswell through the next couple of weeks, but the first few days are a bit of a mixed bag with wind. The standout window builds around the end of the first week and carries into early September, with some real quality on offer if you pick your moments. There is no surf on offer before the first record, which starts Saturday the 22nd of August, so the countdown begins now.
Let’s kick off on Saturday the 22nd of August. The morning is messy – we’ve got rain showers and a stiff 22 mph cross-off wind from the WSW, with 7 ft of SW swell. The combined energy is strong at 3302. It’s clean enough for a hardcore session, but the wind is fresh and the conditions are marginal. The afternoon cleans up a bit, swell jumps to 10 ft, period 14 seconds, wind easing to 19 mph cross-off – that’s expert territory. The water temp is 56°, which is about average for this time of year, so not too chilly.
Sunday the 23rd is the first real bright spot. The morning is still a bit cross-on from the NNW, but the afternoon goes glassy – zero wind. Swell is 6 ft from the SW with a 13-second period, combined energy 1895. That’s excellent conditions for experienced surfers, and the clean, glassy surface will make it look like a postcard. This is a top pick for the near term.
Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are poor to marginal – fresh cross-onshore winds and lumpy conditions. The swell drops to around 5 ft to 6 ft, energy weakens. Not worth paddling out unless you’re desperate.
Wednesday the 26th of August is a sneaky good one. The morning is clean with a cross-off breeze, but the afternoon turns offshore at 9 mph from the SSW. Swell is 5 ft, 13-second period, combined energy 744. The forecast says “expect very good surf conditions.” That offshore wind will groom the point nicely.
Thursday the 27th is small and quiet, with 4 ft swell. Glassy in the afternoon, good for a longboard if you’ve got patience, but nothing to write home about.
Now, Friday the 28th of August brings a pulse. Swell jumps to 8 ft in the morning with a 17-second period – that’s very long-period groundswell. Combined energy hits 3407. The wind is cross-shore and messy in the morning, but the afternoon cleans up with a cross-off. This is a big, powerful swell, so stick to the point for the best shape. It’s for experienced surfers only at this size.
Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th keep the swell around 7 ft to 7 ft with clean conditions through the afternoons. Not the standout but still very solid. Sunday afternoon in particular is glassy and excellent for experienced surfers.
Monday the 31st is a bit rough again with fresh cross-shore winds and a cross-chop, but the energy is still high at 3089. Tuesday the 1st of September is a big one: 8 ft from the SW, 16-second period, combined energy 2920, with light offshore winds. That’s excellent for experienced surfers – clean, long-period groundswell, perfect for the point.
Wednesday the 2nd of September goes bad – strong winds from the NNW, lumpy and choppy. Avoid it.
Thursday the 3rd has 28 mph winds – that’s kite-surfing weather, not paddling. The swell is there but the wind is too strong for pleasant surfing.
Friday the 4th is marginal again, then Saturday the 5th of September is a true standout. 10 ft of SW swell, 16-second period, combined energy 4064, and light offshore winds from the SE. The forecast says excellent for experienced surfers. This is the best on offer in the second week.
Sunday the 6th of September is massive – 16 ft in the morning, 13 ft in the afternoon, 17-second period, combined energy 20584 and 15587. The wind is light and glassy in the afternoon. But this is too big for the break – expert only, and even then, it’s a serious, heavy session. Only for the brave.
The crowds at Left Point can be there sometimes, especially on these bigger, cleaner days, so you won’t be alone.
Best on offer: Sunday 23rd August afternoon for the glassy, clean 6 ft swell, and Saturday 5th September for the big, clean, long-period groundswell. Those are your two true standouts.
Rusty.
