The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Left Point. This is a classic point break setup, and it’s got a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde personality over the next couple of weeks.
First things first, the water’s sitting at 56°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, but nothing wild. The swell’s coming from the SW, which is a decent direction, but that optimum for Left Point is actually WSW. Not a perfect match, but close enough to get some juice.
The week starts off rough. Friday the 21st is a write-off – lumpy, cross-shore wind, and the swell is mushy even though there’s a long period of 15 seconds. That groundswell is there, but it’s messy. Saturday the 22nd is a real head-scratcher. The morning is a no-go, but by afternoon the wind swings to a cross-offshore and it cleans up. The problem is the swell hits 12 ft. That’s expert territory only, and even then, the power is intense. The combined energy is a massive 4274, so it’s a serious beast. Not for the faint of heart.
Sunday the 23rd? The afternoon is where it’s at. Wind drops to glassy, swell is a solid 6 ft, and the period is still a nice 13 seconds. The combined energy is 1883 – moderate to strong – but the conditions are clean. This is a standout for experienced surfers. It’s a true point break, so that long period groundswell will wrap in nicely.
Then we get a bit of a lull with some windy, choppy days early in the week. But Tuesday the 25th afternoon is a gem. Glassy conditions again, 6 ft of SW swell, and a 13-second period. The water is clean, the energy is 1579, and it’s just a beautiful session waiting to happen. Wednesday the 26th morning is also a cracker – offshore wind from the SW, 6 ft, and long period. The energy is 1359, but it’s clean and powerful. This is another standout.
The end of the first week and into the second week gets a bit hit and miss. The 29th of August afternoon has a nice cross-offshore wind with 4 ft of swell, but it’s a bit smaller. The real highlight in the second week is Tuesday the 1st of September. The afternoon looks absolutely perfect: light offshore wind, 7 ft of SW swell, 15-second period, and the combined energy is 2154. Excellent conditions for experienced surfers. That’s a beauty.
After that, the wind turns nasty again. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th of September are all blown out with strong, cross-onshore winds. The swell’s there, but it’s a mess. The 4th has a very short period of 8 seconds, so it’s a weak, choppy windswell. Not worth paddling out for.
The takeaway? Sunday the 23rd afternoon, Tuesday the 25th afternoon, Wednesday the 26th morning, and Tuesday the 1st of September afternoon are your best bets. These are the standouts for experienced surfers. Left Point can be inconsistent, but when it lines up, it’s pure magic. Crowds are possible, so get there early if you can.
Rusty.
