The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks at Left Point. This is a point break that’s pretty exposed to the swell, and it loves a good WSW direction. It’s inconsistent, so when it fires, you need to be on it. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing weird there.
We’ve got a bit of a wait for the good stuff. The first few days of the period are a write-off – Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th are looking messy with strong winds and a lumpy, low-quality setup. Honestly, it’s a bit of a dud to start. You’re better off giving the water a miss until things settle.
The real standout kicks off on Saturday the 18th. That afternoon, the swell drops to a clean 5ft from the SW, the wind goes glassy, and the combined energy is moderate (880). It’s a rare moment of perfection at a spot that doesn’t come together often. The crowd factor is a risk here – it can get busy, but with conditions that clean, you’ll be smiling. For the more experienced crew, Thursday the 16th had some potential with solid 8ft SW swell and offshore winds, but the energy was high (2278), and it’s a bit much for beginners. Still, if you’re keen, that morning was clean.
After that, the forecast gets a bit wild. By Thursday the 23rd, we’ve got a big 10ft SW swell rolling in, with a combined energy of 4570 – that’s serious grunt. The wind stays cross-off in the afternoon, so it’s clean, but this is expert-only territory. The swell period is 14 seconds, so it’s got some legs, but it’s a long period swell that can make things tricky at a point break – it’ll line up nice, but the sets will be widely spaced. That one’s a bit over a week away, so keep an eye on it.
The run into the end of the month looks more promising. Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th both have offshore winds and solid 6ft to 7ft SW swell, with moderate to strong energy (2000 to 1376). It’s clean, consistent, and perfect for experienced surfers. The best of the bunch is Sunday afternoon – 6ft SW, light offshore breeze, and a 13-second period, giving you long, lined-up waves. Crowds are likely, but it’s worth the paddle.
Overall, the first week is a bit of a wash, but the second half of the period has some real gems. The best on offer is Saturday the 18th afternoon for the glassy perfection, and Sunday the 26th afternoon for the clean, powerful groundswell. Don’t sleep on it.
Rusty.
