Table - best surf conditions forecast for Left Point over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up at Left Point. We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks, but there are definitely some sessions worth paddling out for.
Right off the bat, Wednesday morning on the 8th of July starts small with a 5ft SW swell, but it's cross-on with a light breeze, so it’s a bit marginal – not worth getting too excited about. The afternoon, though, is a different story. The swell pushes up to 7ft from the SW, and the wind swings to a light cross-off, leaving the surface clean. The wave energy is 2954 (moderate to strong), and with a long 18-second period, this is proper groundswell. Left Point is a point break and inconsistent, so the long-period groundswell will wrap in nicely here, giving some real shape to the waves. This afternoon session is definitely a standout for experienced surfers. Water temp is sitting at 57°, which is about normal for this time of year.
Thursday the 9th has a much smaller 5ft SW swell in the morning with onshore wind – not great. But Thursday afternoon gets glassy, with the wind dropping to a light ESE and the swell settling to 4ft from the SW at 15 seconds. The energy is 934 (weak to moderate), but the glassy conditions will make it clean and fun for a casual paddle.
Friday the 10th is a write-off – 5ft SW swell in the morning and 5ft in the afternoon, both with a gentle cross-onshore that’s choppy. Saturday the 11th is even worse, with 45 km/h cross-onshore winds and messy surf. Skip it.
Sunday the 12th sees a big jump in size – 12ft from the WSW, but with a near gale cross-shore wind. That’s 4405 (strong energy) and it’s just a blown-out mess. Monday the 13th is similar, with 10ft SW swell and more strong winds. Not for paddle surfing.
Tuesday the 14th is still big at 10ft SW, but the wind is strong cross-off in the afternoon, so it’s cleaner but still huge. Only for experts if you’re keen. Wednesday the 15th morning has offshore wind at 50 km/h, but that’s near gale-force – too hard to paddle into. Afternoon is cleaner with a cross-off, but the swell is still 8ft and the wind is strong.
Thursday the 16th is marginal but cleaner, with 5ft to 5ft SW swell and a moderate cross-off breeze. Not a standout, but okay for a wave if you’re desperate.
Now, here’s the next real standout – Friday the 17th of July. The afternoon session has a 7ft SW swell at 16 seconds, with light cross-off winds leaving it clean. The wave energy is 2873 (moderate to strong). This is excellent for experienced surfers – long period groundswell wrapping into the point, with good shape and power. This is the one to aim for.
Saturday the 18th drops back to 6ft with a gentle cross-onshore – not great. Sunday the 19th is windy and messy again.
Into the second week, things get a bit uncertain. Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are mostly poor, with strong winds and messy conditions. Wednesday the 22nd of July is a bit of a wild card – 13ft from the SSW, but the wind is light cross-off in the morning and offshore in the afternoon. That’s serious size, and Left Point can handle it, but it’s only for experts.
Thursday the 23rd of July morning is a solid 10ft from the SSW, with a moderate offshore wind and clean conditions. The period is short at 8 seconds, so it’s windswell, not groundswell, and that will make it a bit fat and less organized. Still, clean conditions and a 10ft wave is powerful. Afternoon drops to 8ft with the same clean offshore wind. This is another standout for experienced surfers, but the short period means it’ll be a bit lumpy and harder to read.
All in all, the best bets are Wednesday afternoon on the 8th, Friday afternoon on the 17th, and Thursday morning on the 23rd. Those are the ones to mark on the calendar.
Rusty.
