Point Impossible Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what we've got coming up at Point Impossible.

First thing you need to know: the water's sitting at about 55°, which is pretty much spot on average for this time of year, nothing weird going on there.

Right now and for the next few days, it's looking pretty average. The early part of the week is weak and messy. Monday morning has a tiny 3ft SW swell wrapping in with a long 16-second period, but the wind is cross-on from the ENE, so it's choppy and small. Energy is only moderate (539). Monday afternoon gets a little bigger but the wind swings onshore from the ESE, making it even less appealing. Tuesday drops off to 2ft with cross-shore winds and a lumpy mess. Wednesday is a write-off with 35 km/h cross-shore winds and rain. Thursday and Friday look better wind-wise with offshore breezes from the NW and WNW, but the swell is tiny – only 1ft to 2ft – so you're looking at barely rideable waves with clean but weak conditions.

The real standout window starts on Friday the 21st of August. Friday morning brings a clean 3ft SW swell from a 12-second period under a gentle offshore WNW breeze. The energy bumps up to moderate (576). The afternoon holds 3ft with a 14-second period and a clean cross-offshore breeze. This is where things start to get fun.

Saturday the 22nd is the pick of the whole run. Morning has 5ft of SW swell with a long 16-second period and clean offshore WNW wind at 20 km/h. Energy is strong (947). Saturday afternoon gets even better: 5ft, 15-second period, clean glassy conditions with a light W cross-offshore breeze, and the energy jumps right up to (1191). This is excellent for experienced surfers – it's not beginner territory at 5ft, especially with a long period that will make the waves punchy and the sets a bit spaced out. You'll have longer waits but better shaped waves. Crowds can be a factor here ('often'), so get out early.

Sunday the 23rd continues the run. Morning has 5ft, 14-second period, clean offshore NW wind. Energy is high (1189). Sunday afternoon is even better: 5ft, 16-second period, clean offshore W breeze, and the energy cranks up to (1904). That's strong energy, meaning there’s plenty of power in the water. Again, for experienced surfers only at this size.

Monday the 24th starts with a decent 4ft SSW swell and a 14-second period under a strong 25 km/h offshore WNW wind. Energy is moderate (716). But the afternoon turns ugly with a 30 km/h cross-shore SSW wind and lumpy chop, so morning is the go.

From Tuesday the 25th through Thursday the 27th, it's all small and poor – 2ft to 3ft with onshore and cross-shore winds. Not worth paddling out.

Then we hit a gap of no real quality from Friday the 28th of August through to Sunday the 30th. You've got 3ft to 4ft of SW swell but the winds are a mix of cross and onshore, and conditions are marginal at best. Energy is moderate, but the report says it's not good.

There's a flash in the pan on Monday the 31st of August with a 8ft WSW swell hitting, which is big – expert territory. But the wind is a strong 20 km/h cross-shore from the NE, making it a lumpy, blown-out mess. The energy is massive (2413), so it would be a monster, but the wind kills it. Not good for paddle surfing, but if you're into kiting, that setup with strong cross-shore winds and a big swell could be interesting.

Tuesday the 1st of September is back to small and poor with 3ft and strong onshore winds.

So, to sum it up: the only window that's truly standout is from Friday the 21st of August through to Sunday the 23rd. Saturday the 22nd afternoon and Sunday the 23rd afternoon are the best waves of the whole 16-day run with clean, powerful SW groundswell in the 5ft to 5ft range. Experienced crew only, though. Get on it.
