Alright, let’s break this down. Arrifana is a beach and reef setup, and it’s got a rep for handling a bit of action. But for the first week and a bit, it’s a snoozefest. Water temp is about 68°F, right on the average for this time of year, nothing weird.
Right now and for days, it’s all flat to tiny. From Sunday the 5th through the end of the first week, you’re looking at swell heights of just 1 to 2 feet, with combined swell energy in the single-to-low double digits, like 35 or 52. That’s weak. The wind gets clean at times – nice glassy mornings on Monday the 6th with a light south breeze, and clean cross-offshore flows on Tuesday the 7th – but there’s no power. The periods are short, mostly 7 to 10 seconds, so even the little bumps are gutless. For a surfer, it’s just flat.
Then things start to wake up around Sunday the 12th of July. The real standout hits on Sunday the 19th of July. That morning, we’ve got a clean 5-foot swell from the NNW, with a period of 8 seconds, and a light cross-offshore breeze from the north at just 6 mph. The combined swell energy hits 296 (moderate energy), and for the first time, it’s flagged as good surf conditions. This is the session to aim for. It’s clean, lined up, and Arrifana is fairly exposed to that NW swell direction, so the reef should be working. Keep in mind it’s a long-range call, so it’s promising but not locked in yet. And since the report says crowds sometimes, you might want to get out early.
The week after, from the 20th, the swell holds around 4 to 5 feet, but the wind gets messy and the energy drops to the low 200s, pushing conditions back into poor or marginal territory. The windiest stretch is between the 11th and 13th of July, with gusts of 15 mph, which will chop things up when the swell bumps up.
So, bottom line: a long flat gap for the first week, but the morning of Sunday the 19th of July is the only real highlight. The rest is mostly flat or messy.
