The Lowdown
Right, gather 'round, me hearty. Rusty here, with the long-range look for Arrifana. A bit of a mixed bag this one, so let's get into it.
The first real chance for a surf comes in on Saturday morning, the 22nd. We're looking at a clean 4-foot swell from the NW, with a period of 10 seconds, and a light cross-offshore breeze. The combined energy is moderate at 316, and it's a bit colder than usual for this time of year, with the water at 68°. This is a solid, clean start to the weekend, but it's not the big one.
Things go a bit pear-shaped after that, I'm afraid. From Saturday afternoon right through the rest of the week and into the next, the conditions are pretty rough. We've got onshore winds, choppy water, and a lot of swell that's just not clean. It's a real blank run, with no good surf on offer for days. The wind is just not playing ball.
Keep your eye on Friday, the 28th. That's the standout. The morning brings a clean 7-foot swell from the NW, with a 11-second period, and a solid cross-offshore wind from the north. The energy jumps right up to 1236. This is powerful, clean, and for the advanced crew only. The afternoon, with an 8-foot swell and 1535 energy, is even more serious but still clean. This is a big, powerful NW groundswell hitting a fairly exposed spot. The period is long, so expect some lulls between sets, but the waves will be well-shaped and have plenty of punch. This is not for beginners.
The following Saturday morning, the 29th, still has some clean, solid 6-foot swell hanging around, but the energy drops a bit, and it's a marginal call. Then we're back to smaller, choppier, or onshore conditions for much of the following week. There's a flicker of life on Saturday, the 5th of September, with a very long-period 13-second swell from the NW, but a cross-shore wind will chop it up a bit.
So, the verdict: The first Saturday morning is a nice, clean warm-up. The real gold is Friday, the 28th. That's the one for the big-wave hunters. It will be powerful, clean, and likely to have some crowd. The rest of the period is largely a write-off for good, clean, paddle-friendly surf.
Rusty.
