The Lowdown

G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been watching this stretch of coast like a hawk. Let’s be straight up – the next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag for Arrifana. There’s not much happening on the first few days, and the surf honestly looks pretty average for a while. We’ve got a long, quiet spell right off the bat, with only small, weak waves and a lot of cross-off wind that keeps things clean but not really exciting. The water’s sitting at 66°F, which is a solid 4°F colder than usual for this time of year – that’s a notable chill, so you’ll want a decent spring suit.

The first real sign of life shows up on the morning of the 11th of August. It’s nothing flash – just a bit of 3 ft swell from the NNW, with a period of 8 seconds and light cross-off breeze. The combined energy is only 134 (moderate), and the comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s a crack in the door, but it’s not a standout.

The real standout – and I mean the only one worth getting excited about – is the morning of the 13th of August. That morning, the swell jumps to 5 ft from the NNW, with a period of 7 seconds, but the wind is light and cross-off from the NNW, making it clean. The combined energy hits 292 (moderate to strong), and the forecast says “expect good surf conditions.” This is the best on offer in the whole window. The swell direction (NNW) matches the optimum swell direction for Arrifana (NW) fairly well, and with that light offshore wind, it’s going to be clean and fun. It’s a beach and reef setup, so it should handle the swell nicely. That said, it’s an advanced break, and consistent, so you’ll want some experience. Crowds are possible – it’s listed as “sometimes” busy.

After that, the 14th, 15th, and 16th of August see bigger pulses – up to 8 ft from the NNW by the 15th afternoon – but the comments turn to “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions.” The energy ramps up to 804 (strong) on the 15th afternoon, but the period stays short (7-8 seconds), so it’s a bit of a close-out mess. The wind stays cross-off, so it’s clean, but at 8 ft, it’s only for experts. The 16th morning has 7 ft from the NW with a 9-second period and gentle breeze, so it might be a bit better shaped, but still marginal.

So, if you’re picking a time to paddle out, the morning of the 13th of August is your best bet. Everything else is either too small, too ordinary, or too big and messy. The long stretch from now until the 11th is pretty much a write-off, so don’t hold your breath. Forecasts can always change, but for now, that’s the story.
