The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on the table for the Arrifana zone over the next couple of weeks.
Look, I'm gonna be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. For the first week, from Friday the 7th all the way through to Thursday the 14th, it's a real struggle. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3 ft, with a weak energy reading (50-238). The wind is a constant cross-off from the north, which is okay for surface texture, but there's just no grunt in the ocean. The water is sitting at 68°F, which is about 3° cooler than usual for this time of year, so you'll feel that little nip in the air. Honestly, it's a write-off for the first seven days.
Now, we do get a small pulse on Friday the 14th morning. The swell bumps up to 3 ft from the WNW with a longer period of 11 seconds, and the energy jumps to 238. The wind is light and cross-off. It's still not great, but it's the first sign of life. Things get a little more interesting early on Saturday the 15th. The morning has 5 ft of NW swell, with moderate energy (334) and light cross-off winds. The wave comment says "expect good surf conditions," but don't get too excited – it's still only a 2 out of 10. The size is getting there, but the quality is just average.
The real standout is Friday the 21st of August. The morning brings a solid 8 ft of NW swell, with a strong energy reading of 843. The wind is a clean cross-off from the north at 12 mph. That's a proper sized swell and it will be clean. This is a big one, so it's for experienced surfers only – it's too much for a beginner. The direction is a bit north of the optimum NW, but with that size and clean wind, Arrifana will have some proper lines. The Saturday morning after that also has 6 ft of NW swell with clean winds, but it's a step down in energy and quality.
To sum it up: the first week is a total bust. The second week offers a glimmer, but the only real standout where you should seriously consider making the trip is Friday the 21st of August. Get your big-wave board ready.
Rusty.
