The Lowdown
Alright, let me tell you how things are shaping up for Azarujinha over the next couple of weeks. Grab a coffee, this one's a mixed bag.
Right now, the swell is tiny and the conditions are pretty ordinary. We're looking at a bit of a slow start with hardly any surf worth getting excited about. That small, weak energy (32) from the SSW isn't going to do anything for you.
Thursday morning the 20th is surfable but nothing to write home about. You'll see a tiny 2ft WNW swell, but the period is a short 9 seconds, so it's just small, weak waves. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing weird going on there.
Friday morning the 21st is where we start to see a pulse. We get a clean, 3ft swell from the NW with a better 11 second period and moderate energy (271). The wind is a fresh offshore from the NNW, so the face of the wave will be clean. It's still pretty small for a reef break, but on the better sets, you might find a fun one. That afternoon the swell drops right off, so morning is your window.
Over the weekend and into the start of the following week, it’s pretty flat again. The swell energy drops to almost nothing, and it's not worth getting wet for a few days.
The standout period really kicks in on Thursday the 27th. The morning is solid with a clean 4ft NW swell, moderate offshore wind from the N, and moderate energy (234). It’s a good, clean wave. But the real highlight is Thursday afternoon. The swell jumps to a clean 7ft from the NW, period stretching out to a long 11 seconds, and the energy gets strong (1052). The wind is fresh offshore from the NNW, so those waves will be holding up nicely. This is proper surf, but at 7ft on an exposed reef, this is for competent intermediates and up.
Friday the 28th morning stays good with a 5ft NW swell, moderate offshore N wind, and solid energy (439). It’s a great follow-up session. The afternoon drops off.
There's another notable pulse on Monday the 1st of September. The morning brings a very solid 7ft NW swell with a very long 13-second period. The wind is fresh offshore from the N, and the energy is very strong at 1407. The afternoon holds the same size and quality. This is a serious swell with a lot of power, and the very long period means the sets will be powerful and lined up, but it might close out a bit at a beach break. At this size, it’s only for experienced surfers. This is a call you’ll want to circle on the calendar, but keep an eye on it as it’s a way off.
To be honest, if you’re looking for the absolute best session, Thursday the 27th afternoon and Monday the 1st of September morning are the top contenders. Both offer a clean, strong NW swell with clean offshore wind. The 1st of September has a touch more size and a very long period, which could make for some epic, grunty waves on the reef at Azarujinha, if you've got the skills. The crowds there are often a factor, so just be prepared to share the takeoff zone. All the other days in between are small or poor conditions, so pick your windows wisely.
Stay stoked, Rusty
