The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Grab a seat, let’s talk about what’s cooking at Azarujinha.
Right now, the water is sitting at 68°F, which is a degree or so cooler than usual for this time of year – you’ll feel that little nip if you’re out in boardshorts.
Honestly, the next few days are a write-off. Sunday the 23rd is a mess with onshore winds from the SSE and S kicking up to 22 mph, and the swell is lumpy and ugly. We’ve got a few days of wind and stormy weather conspiring against us, with poor surf pretty much all the way through the 27th. The energy in the water is very weak here, often below 200 (combined energy), so don’t expect much.
The big turnaround comes on Friday morning, August 28th. A solid groundswell rolls in from the NW at 8 ft with a period of 11 seconds, so there’s real power behind it. The combined energy jumps to 1367, which is a serious jump in wave energy. Winds are light offshore from the NNW at 6 mph, making for clean, glassy conditions. This is best for experienced surfers, as it’s well over 8 ft and will be packing a punch. The swell direction (NW) lines up perfectly with the optimum direction for this reef break. The afternoon stays solid, but the wind picks up a bit, so the morning is the window.
Saturday the 29th holds clean, offshore winds in the morning with a drop to 6 ft NW swell, but the afternoon looks like it fades out fast.
The following week is a sharp drop-off. By Sunday the 30th it’s practically flat. There’s a little pulse of energy on the 6th and 7th of September, but it’s small and inconsistent, with a very long period swell (17 seconds) that will be tricky to catch on a beach/reef setup like this. The winds will be strong offshore, making paddling into these weak, long-period lines a real challenge.
So mate, the real standout is Friday morning, August 28th. Get on it early for the best of the run.
Rusty.
