The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what the next couple of weeks are serving up for us at Azarujinha. Gotta be straight with you – this is a pretty grim run for the most part. We’re looking at a long, quiet spell with hardly anything worth paddling out for until the very end of the month.
The water temp is sitting at 69°F, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no thermals needed, at least.
For the next week and a half, it’s basically a write-off. From Tuesday the 18th right through to Sunday the 30th of August, the swell is tiny – mostly ankle to knee-high dribble. The combined energy of all swells is struggling, with numbers barely hitting double digits (7 to 80). That’s weak, tired energy. You’ll see a bit of a bump around Thursday morning the 20th with a 2ft WNW swell, and the wind goes glassy that morning. That’s your one bright spark in the first ten days – tiny, clean, but really only for a longboard or a foiler if you’re desperate. Any other day it’s either onshore junk or howling offshore winds that chop up what little wave there is. Even when the wind is clean, there’s just no swell.
The real story is that blank period from the 23rd of August until the 30th. Days of nothing but flat, clean but empty ocean.
Now, hold onto your board, because things finally wake up on Sunday the 30th of August. The afternoon shows a sudden spike: a 6ft NW swell rolling in with a 9-second period. The combined energy jumps to 470 – moderate to strong. The wind is fresh offshore from the NNW, so it’ll be clean. That’s a big jump in size, and with that period, it might be a little lumpy and top-heavy for a beach break, but for a reef like Azarujinha, it could line up nicely. This one is for the experienced crew only.
The real standout, the one to circle on your calendar, is Monday the 31st of August. The morning session is looking like the best of the whole outlook. You’ve got a 4ft NW swell, period at 10 seconds, and the combined energy is 377 – solid moderate. The wind is offshore from the NNW at 16 mph, keeping it clean and hollow. The swell direction matches the optimum SW, so it’s hitting the reef right. This is your one true highlight: a proper, rideable wave with clean conditions.
That quality carries into Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd of September, with similar 4ft to 4ft NW swells and lighter offshore or glassy winds in the mornings. Combined energy stays in the 260 to 447 range, which is decent. The afternoons get a bit of a cross-offshore wind, so mornings are definitely the call. Crowds? Azarujinha can get crowded often, so if you can get out on a weekday morning, you’ll miss the circus.
So, to wrap it up: a long, flat start, then a promising but less certain long-range window from the 30th of August through to the 2nd of September. Monday morning the 31st is your prime, with Tuesday and Wednesday mornings as solid backups. Don’t bother with anything before that.
Stay patient, keep the wax warm. This is Rusty, signing off.
