The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Azarujinha.
Right now, things are pretty grim. The wind is howling onshore from the SSE and south at 18 to 22 miles per hour, and the swell is a messy 6ft to 6ft from the WNW. The combined wave energy is moderate at 791, but with that wind, it’s not worth paddling out. The water is 68°, which is a couple of degrees cooler than average for this time of year – you’ll need a good spring suit or maybe even a 3/2.
The first real glimmer comes on Tuesday morning, the 25th of August. The wind goes glassy – almost nothing – and the swell drops to a clean 5ft from the west. The combined energy is a weak 204, so it’s small, but the surface will be like a mirror. It’s a reef break and fairly consistent, so you’ll get waves. Just know this spot gets crowded often. For a small, clean Tuesday session, that’s the best bet early on.
After that, there’s a lull mid-week. Wednesday is tiny and choppy.
Now, the big one. Friday the 28th of August. The morning session is a beauty. The swell jumps to 10ft from the NW with a long period of 11 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell. The combined energy is a strong 1965, so there’s plenty of power. The wind is offshore from the NNW at a gentle 9 miles per hour. Clean, lined-up, excellent surf for experienced surfers. 10ft is getting into expert territory on a reef, so know your limits. The swell direction is a bit off the ideal SW, but the quality of the swell and the wind makes this the standout of the whole outlook. Crowds are likely, but for a morning like that, it’s worth it.
The afternoon is still solid – 8ft, clean, and cross-off wind.
Saturday the 29th holds in nicely. Morning offshore from the north, 6ft of NW swell at 10 seconds. Combined energy is 726 – solid but not crazy. Clean conditions and a lot more manageable than Friday. Very good for intermediates.
From Sunday the 30th onwards, the swell disappears. It goes flat to tiny, with energy readings dropping into the single digits and low double digits. There’s a slight bump on the morning of the 1st of September – 5ft from the NW, period of 9 seconds, clean offshore wind – but the energy is only around 410 and it’s flagged as marginal. After that, it’s mostly weak and small right through to the 7th of September, with the odd 4ft to 4ft day that’s clean but lacks power.
So, bottom line: Tuesday morning the 25th is your early small-wave glass-off. The absolute standout is Friday the 28th of August – big swell, clean wind, heaps of energy. Saturday the 29th is a good smaller follow-up. After that, it’s a long flat spell with very little to get excited about until maybe the 6th or 7th of September.
This is Rusty, signing off.
