The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here.

Alright, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Azarujinha. This reef break is exposed to the SW, and it’s been a bit of a mixed bag lately. The good news is, there’s a run of clean conditions coming, but you’ve gotta be patient. The back half of this 16-day window is where the real action is.

We’ve got no surf worth paddling for right this moment. Saturday the 22nd kicks off with tiny 2ft waves and a cross-offshore breeze, but the energy is weak (59) and it’s just not doing anything. Sunday the 23rd turns ugly with onshore wind, rain and a stormy 6ft swell. That trend continues through to Monday the 24th with a messy WSW swell over 8ft and onshore winds—really not what you want.

Tuesday the 25th morning is a tease: glassy conditions with a light 4ft swell from the west. The period is short, just 7 seconds, and the energy is low (163), so it’s surfable but very ordinary. Still, it’s clean, so if you’re desperate, you could get wet. Wednesday the 26th morning offers a similar story—3ft with a cross-offshore breeze, but the period drops to 6 seconds, giving weak little 75-energy waves.

Now, things start to turn around from Thursday the 27th. We get a cleaner NW swell building through the back half of the week. Thursday morning brings 5ft from the NW with a cross-offshore breeze and a period of 9 seconds. It’s marginal, but the setup is improving. Friday the 28th morning sees offshore wind from the north, with 4ft waves and a 9-second period. It’s still on the small side, but the conditions are clean.

Saturday the 29th is the first true standout. Early morning you’ve got 7ft of NW swell with a long 10-second period, offshore northerly wind, and the combined energy is pumping at 951. This is the kind of day where Azarujinha really starts to wake up. The offshore wind will keep the faces clean, and that longer period means proper groundswell lines. It’s a reef break too, so it’ll handle that energy well. For a Saturday morning session, this is your best bet this week. Expect a crowd though—this spot can get busy.

After that, the swell fades into Sunday and Monday, with small 3ft to 4ft waves and strong offshore wind. It’s clean but not exciting.

Now, here’s where it gets good again. Look ahead to Thursday the 3rd of September and Friday the 4th of September. These two days are the real highlight of the whole window. Thursday morning we’re looking at 7ft of WNW swell with an 11-second period, offshore NNW wind, and strong wave energy at 1047. The rating is excellent for experienced surfers—and that’s because it’s powerful. Friday the 4th is even bigger: 7ft from the NW, a 12-second period, and energy over 1200. Again, offshore wind. The water temperature anomaly is nothing unusual this time of year, so it’s average for late summer.

Keep in mind, with swell over 7ft, this is getting up there. If you’re a beginner, it’ll be too much. For the rest of us, point your board at Azarujinha on that Thursday morning and enjoy.

A couple of things: the period on those September swells is over 11 seconds, which is true groundswell. Classic reef break conditions—long walls, more energy, and longer lulls. The direction from the NW isn’t the perfect optimum (SW), but it’s close enough and the offshore wind will make it clean.

For the rest of the second week, it drops away. Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th of September are tiny, with 0.3ft waves and nothing to ride. So the good stuff is concentrated on that end of the forecast.

Stay patient, get out there on the 29th, or if you can wait, the real score is the 3rd and 4th of September. That’s the call.

Rusty.
