The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk waves. The surf kicks off Wednesday afternoon, 19th August, with a tiny pulse showing at Azarujinha, a reef break that’s wide open to a SW swell. Water temp is about 69°, pretty much normal for this time of year.
First day’s a write-off — just 1ft of small WNW swell, combined energy of 33, real weak. A light crosswind doesn’t help. We’re gonna have to wait a bit for anything decent.
Thursday 20th morning is a little better. The swell comes up to 2ft from the WNW, 9-second period, with a light cross-offshore breeze that cleans things up. The energy is still low (79), but it’s surfable if you’re on a log. The afternoon sees a stronger NW breeze that messes up the surface.
Friday 21st morning is the first real bright spot — briefly. You’ve got 3ft of clean NW swell, 11-second period, with a fresh offshore wind. The combined energy is moderate now (275) and the bank shapes up. But the afternoon falls off a cliff — the swell drops to nothing, 0.7ft from the SSW, too weak to ride.
The weekend is a struggle. Saturday morning could be ridden with light wind, but it’s tiny and short period. Sunday jumps up to 4ft but with a nasty cross-on wind from the SSE making it lumpy. The energy is moderate (375) but the quality is poor. The following week looks messy with mostly onshore and cross-onshore winds, swell between 5ft and 7ft, moderate to strong energy (up to 600) but it’s all wind-chop.
The real standout comes in the second week — Friday 28th August morning. That’s the one. Clean 6ft NW swell, 10-second period, cross-offshore breeze, combined energy of 559 (strong). That’s a proper, clean reef wave. Crowds are often here, so get there early. The Saturday after that, the swell vanishes — zero energy — and we get a couple of days of nothing but offshore wind and no waves.
The swell returns Monday 31st August morning with a clean 5ft NW swell, 8-second period, offshore winds, and strong energy (518). That’s a good one for the confident intermediate and up — 5ft might be a bit much for beginners. The rest of the week into September sees a few more pulses, some small, some with size, but the wind and swell directions are all over the place. Nothing beats that Friday 28th morning session.
That Friday 28th August morning is the absolute pick. Go get it.
