The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a quiet stretch for our region. We’ve got Azarujinha (reef break) as the only spot on the cards, and it’s going to be a long wait for anything that gets the heart pumping.
We’re basically looking at a solid block of weak, limp surf from now until well into the second week. The water temperature is sitting at 69°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year – nothing unusual there. For the first ten days or so, from Saturday the 18th right through to the end of July, the swell is tiny, mostly hanging around 1ft to 1ft from the WNW. The combined energy is pathetic, reading between 12 and 89 (weak energy), so you’re essentially looking at a lake. The wind is mostly a cross-off from the NNW, which keeps it clean, but there’s just no power to work with. A few afternoons, like Monday the 20th, see a bump up to 4ft but from the NW with a short period of 7 seconds, so it’s mushy and messy – still poor surf conditions.
For a few mornings around the 23rd and 24th, we get a light offshore breeze from the NNW, making the surface glassy and clean, but again, the swell is only 1ft to 1ft. It’s pretty but unsurfable. You’d be better off having a coffee and watching the horizon.
Now, things start to shift around Wednesday the 29th of July. The afternoon shows a pulse of 5ft from the NW with a 9-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 383 (moderate wave energy). The wind is a fresh offshore from the NNW, so it’ll be clean. It’s marked as marginal, but that’s the first real sign of life. Then on Thursday the 30th, the afternoon brings 5ft from the NW with a 10-second period (369 energy), with light cross-off winds. For a reef break like Azarujinha, this is a solid, surfable swell. The direction is SW-optimum, and while it’s not exactly bang on, the NW swell will wrap in nicely. This is the best on offer – a proper little window of clean, waist-to-chest high waves for the intermediate crew. The water will still be warm, and the crowds? Azarujinha can get busy, so expect company.
The very end of the run, on Sunday the 2nd of August, sees a long-period ghost swell from the W at 15 seconds, but it’s only 0.7ft. That’s a whisper, not a wave.
So, to sum it up: the first week and a half is a total write-off. Your best bet, and the only real standout, is the afternoon of Thursday the 30th of July. Get on it. Everything else is flat or close to it.
