The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’re looking at Azarujinha, a reef break that’s fairly consistent and picks up swell from the SW. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
To be brutally honest, the next two weeks are a tough watch. We’ve got a long stretch of very small, weak swell and wonky wind directions. There’s a gap of several days with really nothing to get excited about. The first few days through to the end of July are mostly tiny dribble—1 ft to 1 ft swell—with a cross-off wind that’s not helping. The energy is weak, barely cracking 20-30 (combined energy), and the period is short, so the waves are just fat and sloppy. Monday the 20th has a brief pulse of 3 ft, but from the NW with a period of only 7 seconds, so it’s short and crumbly, and the combined energy is only 79. Not worth paddling out for.
The real standout, the only time this place even looks interesting, is on the morning of Thursday, 31st July. We’ve got a 3 ft NW swell with a 9-second period, but the magic is in the wind: it’s glassy. Absolutely dead calm. That’s a major positive. The combined energy hits 142, so there’s a bit of push behind it. The water will be clean, smooth, and the reef will hold that shape. It’s an intermediate spot, and with crowds listed as “often”, you can expect some company in those conditions. This is the only window worth circling on your calendar.
After that, the 1st of August has a small 3 ft NW swell with a gentle offshore, but it’s short period (8 secs) and the energy drops to 90. Then it’s back to tiny, weak surf and fluky winds right through to the 3rd of August, with combined energy falling to single digits. Honestly, it’s a bleak run for paddle surfing. The surf is so small and poorly formed that this setup would actually be more interesting for kite surfing than a traditional paddle session.
So, to sum it up: if you can make it out on the morning of the 31st of July, do it. That glassy morning with waist-high, clean lines is your best bet. The rest of the period is a waiting game.
Rusty.
