The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at Azarujinha. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch.
We’ve got a reef break that’s fairly consistent and exposed to the swell, but the forecast is pretty grim for the first week. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real chance to get wet comes on Monday, July 20th, with a morning session. The swell is a tiny 3 ft from the NW with a short period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy is weak (79). The wind is a cross-offshore breeze, which keeps things clean, but the waves are just surfable, nothing special. That afternoon, the swell picks up a touch to 4 ft, but the energy is only moderate (154) and conditions are actually worse, so Monday morning is your only real shot that day.
We then hit a real dry spell. From Tuesday, July 21st, all the way through to Sunday, July 27th, it’s mostly tiny, weak swells or flat conditions. There’s a brief moment on Thursday, July 23rd morning, with a clean 3 ft swell from the NW and a light offshore wind – that’s a nice setup for a reef, but the period is a miserable 6 seconds and the wave comment tells you it’s just ordinary. The next few days are a write-off, with almost no energy.
The next glimmer of hope is on Monday, July 27th. The morning shows a 3 ft swell from the WNW with a 6-second period, and the energy is weak (94). But the afternoon is the pick of the entire forecast: a 4 ft swell from the NW, with a 7-second period and moderate energy (190). The wind is a fresh offshore from the NNW, which will make for clean, lined-up waves. This is the standout of the whole outlook. The swell is just over 4 ft, so it’s getting a bit more serious, but still manageable for intermediate surfers. The offshore wind will make it a lot of fun, but it’s worth noting crowds are often there, so you might have some company.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. From Tuesday, July 28th, right through to the end of the forecast on Monday, August 3rd, it’s flat or nearly flat. The energy is negligible, and the only thing that shows up is a tiny 0.7 ft from the SE on August 1st, which is a joke. The wind stays offshore for most of these mornings, but there’s just nothing to surf.
So, to sum it up: the best bet is Monday, July 27th afternoon. The rest of the 16-day window is a long, empty gap, which is a bit of a bummer, but it can happen at this spot. Keep an eye on the forecast, things can change.
Rusty.
