The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Azarujinha over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. The first week and a half is pretty much a write-off. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with hardly any energy reaching the reef. The swell is tiny, mostly around 1 to 2 ft with a short period, and the combined wave energy is stuck in the weak range. It’s just not enough to get a proper wave. The wind is mostly cross-off or cross, which would be nice if there was any swell to ride, but it’s just small and gutless. You’d be bobbing around for nothing.
The first real flicker of hope doesn’t show up until the morning of Thursday, July 23rd. The wind finally swings offshore from the NNW, and the morning session gets a rating of “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” The swell is still only around 1 ft, but the energy ticks up a little. It’s barely a wave, but at least it’s clean and you might get a knee-high dribble. The afternoon gets chewed up by stronger winds, so the morning is your only shot that day.
The next decent chance comes on the morning of Sunday, July 26th. Again, offshore winds from the NNW, and the swell is about 2 ft with a period of 10 seconds. The energy is 78. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s the best of a bad bunch. The same goes for the morning of Monday, July 27th, with similar conditions and 2 ft waves.
Towards the very end of the forecast, on the morning of Wednesday, July 30th, the wind is strong offshore from the N, but it’s blowing 25 mph. That’s a strong breeze. The waves are only 1 ft, and while it’s clean, paddling into anything will be a real battle with that wind. You’d need a gun and a lot of grunt.
So, the standout – if you can even call it that – is the morning of Sunday, July 26th. It’s the best combination of a slightly bigger swell (2 ft), a 10-second period, and clean offshore wind. The waves will be small and weak, but you might get a few fun ones if you’re patient. The crowds are listed as "often" at Azarujinha, so expect a few locals out for the same small waves.
Bottom line: leave the big boards at home. This is a week and a half of flatness, followed by a few mornings of marginal, tiny surf. If you’re desperate, the 26th morning is your best bet.
Rusty.
