The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’m looking at a pretty grim stretch ahead. For the first week and a half, there’s barely a whisper of surf. From Thursday the 16th of July all the way through to the 27th, it’s a whole lot of nothing. We’re talking tiny dribbles of swell, mostly 1ft to 2ft, with the combined energy barely cracking 60 (that’s weak). The wind is mostly cross-off or cross-shore, so it’s clean, but there’s just no push. You’d be better off on a skimboard. For the first few days, the water temp is sitting at 67°, which is pretty much bang on average for the time of year, so nothing weird there.
The only glimmer of hope shows up way out in the range. Things start to look a little more interesting around the 30th of July. There’s a pulse of swell on Thursday the 30th morning, with 4ft from the WNW, and the wind is a fresh offshore from the N. That’s a solid session for the more experienced crew. The combined energy jumps to 231 (moderate), so there’s some life in the water. By Friday the 31st of July morning, it cleans up even more. You’ve got 4ft of NW swell, a light cross-off breeze from the NNE, and the combined energy is a solid 355 (strong). That is the standout of the whole 16-day window. The swell period is 12 seconds, so it’s a proper groundswell, with long lines and plenty of energy. Azarujinha is a reef break, so that long period will wrap in nicely, giving you some well-shaped waves. Just keep in mind, with the crowd factor listed as “often”, you’ll have company.
Bottom line: the first 12 days are a write-off. The only real chance to paddle out is the morning of Friday the 31st of July. That’s the one to put a pin in. It’s a long way off, so forecasts can still shift, but right now, that’s your best bet.
Stay patient,
Rusty
