The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at Azarujinha.
To be straight with you, the outlook is pretty bleak for most of the period. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing worthwhile from now right through until the morning of July 22. That’s over a week of tiny, weak waves and poor conditions. The swell energy is just not there, barely cracking 100 on the best of those early days, and mostly sitting in the puny teens or twenties. The wind is mostly cross-off, which isn’t the worst, but with waves that small, it’s just not worth paddling out.
Things finally start to stir on the afternoon of July 22, when we see a bit of a bump in swell height to 3ft, and the energy ticks up to 130 (moderate). Still, the comment says "poor surf conditions", so don’t expect much. The 23rd offers a bit more early on, with 3ft swell from the WNW and energy up to 133, but it’s still only rated as "surfable but very ordinary." The real change comes around July 26.
The morning of Sunday July 26 is the first true standout. We’ve got a clean 3ft swell from the WNW, with moderate energy of 217. The wind is a light cross-off from the NNW, so it’ll be clean. That’s a fun, user-friendly size for intermediates. The afternoon of the same day sees a jump in period to 14 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell, very long period. The energy rockets to 624 (strong), but the swell direction swings to the NW. At 3ft with that long period, it’ll be a bit straight at a beach break, but Azarujinha is a reef, so it should handle it well. The wind gets a bit stronger though, which is a shame.
The 27th and 28th bring building swell. Monday morning the 27th has 5ft from the NW with a solid 11-second period and energy of 613. The wind is a fresh cross-off, so it’s a bit lumpy. By Tuesday the 28th, we’ve got offshore winds from the NNW, which is a huge plus. The morning shows 5ft swell from the NW with a 10-second period and energy of 505. That’s getting into the expert-only zone, so only the experienced crew should be looking at it. The afternoon is a tad smaller at 4ft. The standout here is Wednesday July 29: morning has 6ft from the NW, 10-second period, 554 energy, and fresh offshore winds from the north. That’s the pick of the second week for the big-wave hunters. Clean, powerful, and pumping.
The water temperature is sitting at 66°, which is about average for this time of year, so no wetsuit drama for the locals.
All in all, don’t bother for the first week. The best windows are the morning of July 26 for a fun, clean session, and then the mornings of July 28 and 29 for the bigger, more powerful stuff if you’ve got the skills. Crowds are often at Azarujinha, so expect company.
Rusty.
