The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer at Azarujinha over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, this is a tough stretch. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with hardly any worthwhile surf. The first recommendation doesn’t pop up until Wednesday morning, 22nd July, and even then it’s barely a whisper. The water’s sitting at 68°, which is dead average for this time of year, so nothing weird there.
The whole first week, from Friday 17th July right through to Tuesday 21st July, is a write-off. Tiny, weak windswell with poor surf conditions. The combined energy is stuck in the low double digits (14 to 51), so there’s just no power. You’d be better off finding a different hobby for those days.
Wednesday morning, 22nd July, finally gives us a pulse. The swell is a tiny 1 ft from the WNW at 10 seconds, cross-off wind from the NW at 6 mph. Combined energy is 53 (weak energy). The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” and that’s about the best we get. It’s a reef break that’s fairly consistent, and with those light winds, it’ll be clean, but you’ll be scratching for scraps.
The rest of that week and into the next is more of the same – small, weak, and mostly poor. There’s a brief spike on Wednesday morning, 29th July, when the swell jumps to 3 ft from the NW at 13 seconds and the combined energy hits 322 (moderate wave energy). That’s the biggest energy we see, but the wind is cross-off at 9 mph, and the wave comment still calls it “marginal.” Honestly, for a reef break, that long-period (13 seconds) groundswell could make it a bit too straight, but it’s the only real window where you might get a half-decent ride.
After that, from Thursday 30th July onwards, the finder shows zero swell – nothing. It’s a total flat spell right through to the end of the forecast on 1st August.
So, if you’re hanging for a wave, the only faint glimmer is Wednesday 29th July morning. The swell direction is NW, which matches the optimum SW direction? Not really, but it’s the best we’ve got. Crowds are “often” here, so expect company. For a place that’s fairly consistent, this is a rough run.
Rusty.
