The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down. It’s a rough patch for Azarujinha, a reef break that normally holds up alright, but the next couple of weeks are mostly a bust. The first hint of anything worth paddling for is not until Monday morning, 20th July, and even then it’s just a tiny knee-high slop, nothing to write home about. The water temp is about 69°, right around average for this time of year, so no drama there.
The one true standout, the only session you’d want to plan for, is Wednesday morning, 29th July. That morning the swell jumps to 4ft, coming from the NW, and the energy reading hits 332 (moderate wave energy). That’s a serious upgrade. But the big news is the wind – it’s glassy, dead flat calm. That’s a beautiful thing. The swell period is a solid 10 seconds, so you’ll get some decent-shaped waves, not too dumpy, not too fat. It’s perfect for intermediate surfers – not too big, not too small. The crowds are listed as “often”, so expect a few others out, but that’s par for the course on a morning like this. The afternoon is still clean, with a cross-off breeze, but the morning is the clear winner.
The rest of the run is a real grind. You get a few mornings with offshore wind – Thursday 23rd, Friday 24th, and Saturday 25th – but the swell is tiny, barely 1ft to 1ft. The energy readings are all in the teens or twenties (weak). It’s clean, but there’s nothing to ride. Then Monday 27th July morning gives you a little bump to 1ft, with offshore wind and energy up to 54 (weak) – surfable, but just barely. After that, it’s flat again until the 29th. Then, Friday 31st July afternoon shows a 4ft, 9-second NW swell with 230 energy (moderate), but the report says it’s marginal, and the wind is cross-off, so it’s a gamble.
There’s a big dry gap at the end, from the 30th of July through to the 2nd of August – the swell completely drops out. Zeros across the board.
So, the takeaway? Wait for that Wednesday morning, 29th July. Glassy, 4ft, NW swell, 10 seconds. That’s the one. Everything else is flat or too small to bother with.
Rusty.
