The Lowdown
Alright, time for the imperial version. Rusty here.
Looking at Azarujinha, a reef break. Water temp is about average for this time of year. Let’s be honest, the next couple of days are dead. Tuesday, August 18 through Thursday, August 20, we’ve got puny swell—0.3 ft to 0.5 ft from the west and southwest—with weak energy (17 to 65). Winds are onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s messy. Thursday morning goes glassy, but there’s no power. Just a nice flat paddle.
Come Friday, August 21, we finally see something. The morning brings a 3 ft NW swell with an 11-second period and energy of 218 (moderate). The wind shifts to a fresh offshore from the NNW, so the waves will be clean and lined up. That’s the standout window. It drops way off by the afternoon though.
From Friday afternoon all the way through Thursday, August 27, we hit a flat spell. Heights between 0.3 ft and 1 ft, energy mostly under 60. Winds are offshore or cross-offshore, keeping the surface clean, but there’s no swell. You could skip this whole stretch.
Friday, August 28, we get a tiny bump to 3 ft from the NW in the morning, energy at 93 (weak), with moderate offshore wind. It’s surfable but ordinary. Then from Saturday, August 29, to Tuesday, September 1, it’s practically flat again—0.3 ft or less.
Now, the only real size in the whole run appears way out on Wednesday, September 2. That morning we get 5 ft from the NW at 10 seconds, energy jumps to 515 (strong). Wind is light cross-shore, so not glassy but workable. The period is short, so expect a choppier, crumbly wave. At 5 ft, this reef is for experienced folks only.
Best bet? Friday morning, August 21, for clean, small waves. That September 2 pulse is the only big swell in the window, but it’s a long way off. Crowds are common here, so if it’s good, expect company.
Rusty.
