The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the local stretch for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – this is a tough run of forecasts for Figueiros. We’re looking at a long, long dry spell. The charts show a whole lot of nothing for days on end. There’s not a single recommendation in the whole 16-day window, so you’re looking at a solid blank run here. For this area, it’s not totally abnormal to have stretches like this, but it stings when you want a wave.
Starting off from Sunday, July 19th, right through to the end of July, it’s a write-off. The swell is small, barely flickering, and the wind is almost always a messy cross-onshore or onshore breeze. We’re talking winds from the NNW at 12-18 mph, just chopping everything up. Wave energy is weak, mostly in the 50s and 60s (combined energy of all swells directed here), with a few days in the low 100s, but it doesn’t matter because the conditions are just poor.
The water temp is sitting at 69°F right now, which is spot on average for the time of year – nothing weird there.
The swell does try to push a little more size around the end of July and into the first week of August. By Monday, July 27th, we’ve got a 7 ft swell from the NNW, but it’s a short period 8-second windswell. The energy jumps up to 601 (combined energy of all swells directed here), but the wind is still howling cross-onshore at 18 mph. That’s a messy, blown-out, and probably too big for beginners, only for the hardcore crew. The rest of that week stays in the 4 ft to 6 ft range, but the wind never cleans up properly.
The best chance for a half-decent window comes right at the end. We have a couple of days around Wednesday, July 29th, and Thursday, July 30th, where the wind swings around to the east and southeast, giving us offshore conditions. The swell is small, only 4 ft, but it’s a long-period groundswell from the NW at 9-10 seconds. The energy is moderate (239-260 combined energy of all swells directed here). The catch is the wind is strong on the 29th, 25 mph from the ESE, which makes it clean but very hard to paddle into. The afternoon of the 30th is better, with a moderate 15 mph offshore wind and cleaner lines. The wave comment even says “marginal” for that Thursday afternoon, which is the best we get. It’s not a standout, but it’s the only time the wind is on your side.
After that, the forecast fades back into weak, onshore slop into the first week of August, with swell dropping to 1 ft. A 12-second period groundswell pops up on August 2nd, but it’s tiny and the wind is onshore.
So, the short version: dust off your board for the afternoon of Thursday, July 30th. That’s your one shot for a few clean, offshore lines, but the swell is small. For the rest, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
