The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Looking at the next couple of weeks, it’s a bit of a rough patch for a while, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The surf isn't going to be anything special for a long stretch, with onshore winds and messy conditions dominating the forecast. We’ve got a solid run of poor days ahead, but a proper window of clean waves finally shows up in the final days of the month. Hang in there.
The first real chance for a wave is Monday afternoon, August 17th, at Figueiros. There’s a 3.9ft swell from the NNW with a short 8-second period, and the energy is moderate at 192. It’s a clean-looking surface, but the cross-off wind from the south at 12 mph and the short-period swell won’t do us any favors. It’s surfable, but it’s pretty ordinary. The water is sitting at 66.4°, which is a huge 4.3° colder than normal for this time of year—that’s very unusual, so you’ll want the thickest wetsuit you’ve got.
Tuesday morning, August 18th, is similar. A little smaller at 3.3ft, but the same NNW swell and period. The wind drops off to a light 6 mph cross-off, which keeps the surface clean. It’s still just a one-star kind of day, but you can get a few if you’re keen. Tuesday afternoon turns to junk with a cross-shore breeze, so don’t bother.
Wednesday morning, August 19th, the swell drops to 2.6ft. The wind goes offshore from the SSE at 9 mph, and the surface is clean. But the energy is weak at 95. It’s a knee-high dribbler at best. The swell period is still short at 8 seconds. Not much to get excited about, just a grovel. The afternoon fades to nothing.
Thursday, August 20th, is a write-off. Swell down to 1.6ft, weak energy, and a cross-off breeze. The morning is clean, but there’s just no power. You’d be better off doing something else.
Friday, August 21st, the swell starts to push back up to 4.3ft, but the wind swings around onshore from the NNW at 16 mph. That’s going to chop it up bad. The energy is moderate at 339, but it’s a complete mess. This is the start of the ugly stuff.
From Friday through to Sunday, August 23rd, we’ve got a solid run of onshore NNW winds. The swell stays in the 4.3ft to 5.2ft range, with periods around 8-10 seconds. The energy builds to moderate, peaking around 409 on Saturday morning, but it’s all junk. Choppy, cross-onshore slop. Not worth paddling out for.
Monday, August 24th, the wind is still onshore and it’s still bad. The swell holds at around 4.6ft, but the quality is poor.
Tuesday, August 25th, the period drops out to 6 seconds. The swell is 4.3ft, but with that short period and onshore wind, it’s just windblown crap.
Wednesday, August 26th, is a bit smaller, but the wind is still onshore. There’s a brief window in the morning where the wind drops a touch, but it’s still cross-onshore and choppy. The energy is weak. Not good.
Thursday, August 27th, the swell kicks up again to 5.6ft with more energy (434), but there’s no let-up in the wind. Still onshore and messy. The size is getting up there, but the quality is zero.
Friday, August 28th, has the biggest swell so far, 5.9ft, with energy at 460. The wind is a little lighter, but it’s still cross-onshore and choppy. The period is a short 8 seconds, so it’s going to be a lumpy, bumpy mess. If you’re a kitesurfer, this might be your window, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a no-go.
Saturday, August 29th, the swell is still solid at 5.2ft and the energy is strong at 507, but the wind is on and it’s messy. Don’t get too excited about the size if it’s howling onshore.
Sunday, August 30th, sees a slight drop in the wind in the afternoon, but it’s still cross-onshore. The swell is 4.6ft. Still not worth a paddle.
Now, here’s the payoff. The week starts off with something special. Monday, August 31st, the wind goes to glass. The swell is a clean
