The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks at Cogumelo. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty quiet stretch overall. We’ve got a few moments where the ocean might be worth a look, but mostly, it’s about waiting for the window to open.
The first real chance to paddle out comes Thursday morning, August 20th. It’s not much to write home about, with tiny 2ft swell from the WNW, but the wind is light westerly and blowing straight offshore. That’s clean, glassy conditions, and for a wave that’s small but workable, it’s a nice way to start. The energy is weak (50). By afternoon, the wind picks up from the WNW, so it’ll get a bit bumpy.
Friday, August 21st, the swell bumps up to 4ft but it’s a short-period, messy NW windswell (7 seconds). The wind is cross-onshore, making it choppy. The combined energy is moderate (181), but the quality is poor. Not worth the paddle.
Saturday morning, August 22nd, offers a bit more hope. Swell is 4ft from the NW, and the period stretches to 10 seconds, which is a better shaped wave. Light cross-onshore wind, and the energy is moderate (294). The scores say it’s marginal, but it’s a better bet than the days around it. The afternoon drops off again.
Now, Sunday, August 23rd, is where things get a little more interesting. The morning brings a 5ft swell from the WNW with a solid 12-second period – that’s proper groundswell energy. The wind is light and cross-shore, so it should be fairly clean. The combined energy is strong (717). This is a standout window, but with 5ft, it’s starting to push into intermediate territory. The long period means it could be a bit straight at a beach break, but Cogumelo is exposed, so it’ll handle it. This is the best session on offer.
After Sunday, things get messy. Monday through to early September, the wind is consistently cross-onshore or onshore, often stiff, and the swell is a mix of short-period junk. There are a few mornings with light wind, but the swell is weak and disorganized. The energy values bounce around from moderate to strong, but the wind ruins the quality. You’ll see a few sessions with 5ft to 6ft swell, but the wind is blowing it out.
There’s a gap of several days here where it’s simply not worth the effort. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
If you’re looking for a long-range bet, Tuesday morning, September 1st, shows a 4ft swell from the NW with a 11-second period, and the wind is cross-shore. The energy is strong (549), and it’s rated as marginal. It’s a maybe, but the afternoon gets blown out. Thursday, September 4th, is the last entry, with tiny 2ft swell and poor conditions.
So, to wrap it up, the clear winner is Sunday morning, August 23rd. That 5ft WNW groundswell with long period and light cross-shore wind is the only real standout. Saturday morning, August 22nd, is a distant second. The rest of the run is pretty quiet, so don’t expect much.
Rusty.
