Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Mareta.
To be straight with you, the next 16 days are a real mixed bag, and honestly, it’s a long wait for anything that gets the heart pumping. The first week is pretty tough to recommend, with tiny swells and mostly poor surf conditions. Most of the action, if you can call it that, is tiny and weak. The real standout, and the only time I’d get excited, arrives about a week and a half out, around the 19th of July.
Right now, through the first few days, we’re looking at ankle-to-knee high stuff, with combined energy values barely registering. There’s a bit of offshore wind on the 6th afternoon, which keeps things clean, but there’s just no power. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no wild surprises there.
The first true moment of interest comes on Sunday the 12th. The morning shows a 5 ft swell from the NW, with a moderate energy reading and gentle offshore winds. The surf report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” which is a bit of a bummer, but it’s the best we’ve seen. The trade-off is that the period is a short 9 seconds, so it won’t be the most powerful or well-shaped, but it’s clean.
Now, if you’re a patient surfer, the real standout is the weekend of the 19th of July. On Sunday the 19th, we’ve got a solid 7 ft swell from the NNW, pushing strong energy. The winds are offshore, so it’ll be clean. However, that size is getting into expert-only territory – over 8 ft, but it’s close. The period is a short 8 seconds, so it’s a windswell, not a proper groundswell, meaning it’ll be a bit crumbly and lumpy. Because of the short period and the strong offshore winds, the setup at Mareta might actually be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, as the waves will be steep and hard to paddle into. The 20th keeps the size up with strong offshore winds, but the wind is strong (25 mph), making it tricky. This whole stretch from the 18th to the 21st is the only real window with size, but it’s for the brave and the experienced.
So, to sum it up: the first week and a half are a write-off with tiny surf. The best chance for a proper paddle is Sunday the 12th for a small, clean wave. The only real size comes from the 18th to the 21st, but it’s short-period, strong wind, and big – only for the experts. Keep your eyes on the forecast, it tends not to stay this poor for long.
Rusty.
