The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Playa de San Lorenzo. Right now, it’s pretty quiet. The swell is small and the wind is all over the place, so we’re looking at a real slow start. There’s no surf worth paddling out for until the morning of Monday, July 20th, when a 5ft NNE swell shows up, but it’s mixed with a cross-onshore breeze and messy conditions. Honestly, it’s a bit of a wait-and-see situation.
The first real chance you’d want to get wet is on Wednesday morning, July 22nd. The swell drops a bit to 4ft from the NNE, but the wind goes glassy. That’s the key—clean, smooth surface. The wave energy is moderate (146), so you’ll get some fun little rollers. It’s not gonna be a world-beater, but for a midweek session when the crowds are just “sometimes” around, it’s a nice little window. The water’s sitting at 71°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year—over 4° above average, so you can leave the thick wetsuit at home.
After that, it’s a long stretch of nothing special. A few mornings with glassy conditions but tiny swell, like Thursday the 23rd (2ft) and Friday the 24th (2ft), but the waves are just too small to get excited about. The wind is clean, but there’s no push.
Then, we’ve got a standout window brewing. Wednesday morning, July 29th is the one to circle. The swell picks up to 5ft from the NNW, with a period of 11 seconds—that’s a nice groundswell, with good shape and energy. The wind is glassy again, and the combined energy is strong at 520. This is the best on offer in the whole 16-day run. It’s a solid intermediate level, not too big for most, and the offshore conditions will keep it clean. The only thing to watch is that northwest swell direction—it’s a bit off the optimum for this spot, which prefers NW, but it’s close enough to work.
After that, Thursday the 30th still has some size (5ft, N swell, 10 seconds) but the wind goes cross-onshore and chops it up. The rest of the run into early August is a mix of small, weak, and messy surf. Not much to write home about.
So, overall: if you’re patient, the Wednesday July 29th morning session is your best bet. Glassy, solid chest-high waves, and that warm water. For the rest, it’s a lot of waiting and watching.
