The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for Playa de San Lorenzo.
First thing you’ll notice: the water is sitting at 71°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – so you can leave the thick wetsuit at home.
The outlook is a bit of a slow burner. The first few days are pretty rough. Friday afternoon kicks off with a 6ft NNW swell but it’s cross-onshore and choppy, so not great. Saturday and Sunday are small and messy. Monday morning looks clean but tiny – only 2ft. We’re basically looking at a gap of several days with nothing worth paddling out for.
Then things start to get interesting. The standout window opens up on Friday the 28th of August. Friday morning brings clean, glassy conditions with a 6ft NW swell, and the energy is solid (562). That holds through Saturday morning the 29th – still 6ft, still glassy, and the swell direction is a nice NW. That’s your pick of the whole run. Sunday the 30th morning is also looking good with 5ft NW and glassy conditions. The period is around 8-9 seconds, so it’s not a super long groundswell, but it’s enough to get some fun, well-shaped waves at this fairly exposed beach.
After that, Monday the 31st morning still has some clean 5ft NW swell, but the wind turns more cross-onshore later in the day. The first week of September sees a drop in size and quality, with a lot of small, choppy days. However, check Thursday the 3rd of September – a 7ft WNW swell arrives with glassy conditions in the morning. That’s a solid size, so it’s more for experienced surfers, but the energy is strong (432) and it could be a ripper if the wind plays ball. Friday the 4th morning is also clean with 6ft NW. After that, the swell fades out again.
To sum it up: the best surf is from Friday 28th August through to Monday 31st August, with Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th mornings being the real standouts. The glassy conditions and solid NW swell make for a clean, fun session. The second week has a couple of good windows but they’re less certain. Crowds are possible at this spot, so get in early.
Rusty out.
