The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is looking pretty flat and mushy for Playa de San Lorenzo. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing special to start. The first solid energy doesn’t show up until the 20th of July, and even then it’s tricky. The water is sitting at 69°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a thick suit.
The first bit of actual size hits Monday morning, July 20th, with a 5ft swell from the north, but it’s cross-onshore wind and a pretty weak energy reading (278), so it’s only marginal. That afternoon, the swell jumps to 7ft from the north-northeast, but the wind cranks up to 12 mph onshore, making it choppy and messy. That pattern sticks around through Tuesday – 5ft to 7ft, but the wind is cross-shore or cross-onshore, so it’s just not clean.
Wednesday the 22nd of July is the first real moment of hope. The morning session is glassy with a 4ft swell from the north-northeast and a moderate energy of 141. It’s not a stand-out, but it’s surfable. The catch is it’s a short period 7-second swell, so it’ll be a bit weak and fat. Still, if you’re desperate, that’s your window.
After that, it drops back to ankle-snappers for days. The 27th of July morning finally shows a little pulse – 2ft but with a longer 9-second period from the northwest. The wind is light cross-onshore, but it’s still poor. The afternoon of the 27th goes glassy with 3ft, and the 28th morning is dead calm and glassy with 2ft, but again, tiny.
Now, the real standout – and I mean the *only* one worth getting excited about – is Thursday the 30th of July. The morning brings a groundswell from the north-northwest hitting 3ft but with a very long 14-second period and a massive 696 energy. That’s proper groundswell. The wind is light cross-onshore, so it’s not perfect, but it’s promising. The afternoon goes ballistic: 7ft from the northwest, 12-second period, and a whopping 1549 energy. That’s a lot of power, but the wind is onshore, so it’ll be a bit lumpy. That’s expert territory at that size. This is the best on offer, but it’s a full week away, so keep an eye on the forecasts.
The 31st of July morning still has decent 6ft swell from the northwest with 11-second period and 999 energy, but the wind is light cross-onshore. It’s marginal, but it’s the tail end of the pulse.
Honestly, for the first ten days, I’d leave the board at home unless you’re keen on a tiny, glassy morning session. The real action is on the 30th, but it’s a long-range call, so take it with a pinch of salt. If you’re a beginner, stay away from the 30th afternoon – that’s too much juice. For the few sessions that are glassy before that, the swell is tiny with short period, so it’s a log or nothing.
Rusty.
