The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be real with you. The next couple of weeks at Playa de Tapia are looking pretty flat and pretty uninspiring. We've got a long stretch of small, weak swell and not much push behind it. It's going to be a test of patience, no two ways about it.

The water is sitting at 69°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that's a small win if you're just looking for a paddle.

The whole first week is pretty much a write-off. We're looking at waves mostly under 3ft, with periods that are all over the shop. The energy is weak, mostly three-digit numbers but on the lower end, like 138 or 150. There's a bit of swell on Wednesday morning the 5th, a clean 2ft from the NW with glassy conditions, but it's so weak it's barely going to break. You'd be better off with a bodyboard. The wind is the main problem early on, swinging around and putting some chop on things. There is a small window on Sunday morning the 9th with 2ft and glass again, but honestly, it's all just too small to get excited about.

The gap without any real surf runs from the 5th all the way through to the 19th. That's a solid two weeks of marginal to poor conditions. A couple of mornings, like the 10th and 11th have 3ft NW groundswell with glassy conditions, but the period is short and the energy is still weak. It's just not worth suiting up for.

Now, let's talk about the one bright spot, and it's a long way off. The 19th of August is the only time in this whole window that starts to look like it has any potential. We've got a 4ft NW swell building, with a period of 10 seconds. The energy jumps up to 320 in the morning and then 435 in the afternoon, which is the strongest we'll see all forecast. That's moderate energy, but it's the only period with any real push. The wind is cross-shore, 9 mph from the NE, so it won't be perfect, but it's the only option with any size. This one is promising, but it's a week and a half away, so don't book your flights just yet. Forecasts change.

Until then, it's a long, flat grind. The swell direction is mostly NW, which is what this spot wants, but there just isn't any size. Keep the board in the car, but maybe bring the fishing rod.

Rusty out.
