The Lowdown
Right, mate, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Pantin’s got cookin'.
First things first, the water at Pantin is sitting at 61°F, which is a solid 5°F colder than normal for this time of year. That’s proper nippy – you’ll want a decent steamer or at least a thick rashie, no messing about.
As for the surf, it’s a bit of a slow burn. The pattern is pretty flat and messy for the first week, with only a couple of windows that are worth a paddle. We kick off Tuesday morning the 18th with a weak 3ft windswell from the NE, but it’s a messy cross-off with 25 km/h winds and the combined energy is weak at only 69. Honestly, it’s a write-off. Tuesday afternoon looks worse – lumpy and cross-shore at 5ft.
Wednesday morning the 19th is a tease. We get a glassy, dead-calm morning with a tiny 1ft NW groundswell, period of 10 seconds, and the energy is just 50. It’s surfable but very ordinary. Wednesday afternoon improves slightly with a clean 2ft from the WNW and offshore wind, but the energy is still low.
The first real standout in this run isn't until Thursday the 20th. Thursday afternoon sees a bump in energy – 5ft of NNW swell, period of 11 seconds, and the combined swell energy jumps to a solid 753. The wind is a light cross-shore from the NE at only 10 km/h, keeping it fairly clean. This is the pick of the first week. It’s a groundswell with good length, so expect some proper shape, but it’s at a beach setup, so the long period might make it a bit straight. Still, it’s the best you’re getting for a while.
From Friday the 21st through to Monday the 25th, it’s back to mediocrity. The swell drops off, winds go onshore or cross-on, and the scores are low. Wednesday the 26th picks up a little with 5ft from the WNW, but again, the wind is messy.
Now, jumping ahead, the real gold is sitting at the end of the window. Sunday the 30th of August afternoon looks special. Glassy conditions and a solid 4ft NNW swell with a period of 9 seconds and combined energy of 380. That’s clean, glassy surf. Then Monday morning the 31st is also clean with a decent 3ft N swell.
But the absolute standout is Tuesday the 1st of September. Morning: 8ft of NW swell, period of 11 seconds, combined energy of 1167 – that’s strong energy. Winds are cross-off from the south at 40 km/h, so it’s going to be clean but powerful. This is expert territory, over 8ft and pumping. The afternoon is similar at 7ft, also clean. This is the one to circle. Wednesday the 2nd keeps the size at 8ft, but the wind goes cross-shore and the energy is even higher at 1338.
So, to sum it up: the first week is mostly a write-off with one good afternoon on the 20th. The second week is where it gets tasty, especially Sunday the 30th and that huge Tuesday the 1st of September. Don't sleep on that last one, but it’s for experienced heads only. Keep your eyes on the forecast for that one.
Rusty.
