The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s shaping up for Pantin over the next couple of weeks.
We’re kicking off with a bit of a slow start, but there’s a proper pulse of energy coming through mid-week that’s got my attention. The first real standout is on Sunday the 23rd of August. The morning session is where it’s at – a clean 3ft swell from the west, with a nice 10-second period and a light cross-offshore breeze from the ESE. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no need to dig out the thick rubber just yet. The combined energy is a solid 322 (moderate), and the break is exposed to the swell, so it’ll be picking up that energy well. The wind is light, making for clean conditions. It’s a very consistent spot, so you won’t be waiting around forever, but be aware that crowds are often here, so get there early for a peak.
The surf drops off after that Sunday into Monday, with smaller, weaker waves. Monday morning the 24th is glassy, but the swell is tiny at 2ft from the NE with a short 7-second period and only 125 combined energy (weak). Not much to write home about.
Things get a bit messy Tuesday and Wednesday with building onshore winds and choppy conditions. By Wednesday afternoon the 26th, the wind is howling from the SSW at 22 mph, whipping up a 6ft swell, but it’s a short-period windswell and the cross-offshore wind is too strong to make it enjoyable.
Now, here’s the one that got my heart rate up. Thursday the 27th of August. The morning is *big* and raw. A 7ft swell from the WNW with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 792 (strong). The wind is a strong cross-offshore from the SSW at 19 mph, so it’s clean, but that’s a lot of power. If you’re an expert, it’s on. The afternoon, though, is absolutely massive – 10ft from the west with a 10-second period and a whopping 1493 combined energy (very strong). The wind is a fresh cross-shore, but the forecast says it’s simply too big for this break. That’s a “hold my beer and watch from the cliff” kind of day. Friday the 28th stays huge, with an 12ft swell from the WNW and a 2724 combined energy (very strong), but again, it’s too big for paddle surfing and with strong cross-onshore winds, it’s looking more like a kiteboarding session.
The energy eases back over the weekend. Saturday the 29th has a 7ft swell from the NW with a 9-second period, but the wind is cross and cross-onshore, making it lumpy. The *next* real highlight is Sunday the 30th of August. The morning has a clean 5ft swell from the WSW, a 7-second period (so a bit short), and a light cross-offshore breeze from the SSW. The combined energy is 272 (moderate). It’s not the biggest, but it’s clean and surfable, and after the chaos of the bigger days, it’ll be a welcome relief.
After that, the forecast goes quiet. From Monday the 31st right through to Monday the 7th of September, it’s a long stretch of small, weak, and often onshore conditions. There’s a small window of glassy, small waves on Wednesday morning the 2nd of September, but it’s only 2ft from the north with a 59 combined energy (weak). Not worth paddling out for. The following Sunday the 6th shows a 3ft NW swell with a long 11-second period (241 energy), but it’s cross-onshore and choppy. The wave quality just isn’t there.
To sum it up: the absolute best bet is the Sunday 23rd morning session for a clean, fun wave, or the Thursday 27th morning for the big-wave crew looking for a challenge. The second week looks pretty flat and uninspiring, so don’t plan your trip around it.
Rusty, signing off.
