The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s headed our way over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a bit of a mixed bag, and you’ll need to pick your moments.
We’re looking at Pantin (Galicia) for the whole run. The water temperature is sitting at 61°, which is a solid 4° colder than average for this time of year. That’s a notable chill, so you’ll want a good steamer if you’re heading out.
The first few days are pretty average, to be honest. Sunday the 19th has a tiny 4 ft swell from the NNE with a period of just 5 seconds, and that 19 mph NE cross-offshore wind is going to make things messy. The wave energy is weak (90), and the conditions are poor. Not worth getting wet for.
Monday the 20th sees a bit more size – 6 ft in the morning and 8 ft in the afternoon from the NNE and NE, but the period is still short (7 seconds). The wind is a stiff cross-offshore, and the energy picks up to moderate (401 and 592). The forecast calls it marginal, and I’d agree. It’s surfable if you’re desperate, but far from clean.
Tuesday the 21st is more of the same: 6 ft to 8 ft from the NE, short period, and windy. The afternoon sees a strong breeze hitting 25 mph, making it a write-off for paddling. That kind of setup with this beach break environment might actually be more interesting for the kite crowd than us.
Now, if you can hold out, Wednesday morning the 22nd is your standout. The wind drops to zero – absolutely glassy conditions – with a 5 ft swell from the NNE. The period is still short at 7 seconds, but the energy is moderate (247). The window of good surf is small, but that clean, glassy face will make it worth the wait. This is your best call in the whole outlook.
After that, things taper off badly. From Thursday the 23rd all the way through to Sunday the 27th, we’ve got a long stretch of tiny swell (mostly under 3 ft), poor winds from the west and southwest, and very weak energy. The period finally gets up to 12 seconds on Sunday the 26th, but the swell is only 2 ft and the onshore wind ruins it. That’s a frustrating tease.
We get a bit more size back on Monday the 28th with 4 ft to 6 ft from the NNW, but the cross-onshore wind and moderate chop mean the quality is poor. The following days through to the end of the month and into August offer some bigger numbers (up to 7 ft) but the wind stays strong and cross-shore or onshore, and the periods are short. It’s mostly messy, blown-out conditions.
Overall, for this 16-day window, the consistent theme is that the wind ruins most of the swell. Keep your eye on that Wednesday morning, the 22nd. It’s the only real clean window we have.
Rusty.
