The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Pantin over the next couple of weeks. The forecast kicks off on Friday the 21st of August, but to be brutally honest with you, it’s a rough start with nothing worth paddling for right away. We’re looking at a few days of real average conditions before a nice, short window opens up.
First up, Friday the 21st itself is a write-off. You’ve got a 7ft swell from the NW at 10 seconds, and there’s a fair bit of energy behind it (903), but it comes with a light onshore breeze and some stormy-looking clouds. The water is also much colder than normal for this time of year at 60°, which is a bit of a shock to the system. Still, it’s not good surf, so it’s easy to skip.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd start to clean up, but the swell drops right off. Saturday sees a tiny 3ft to 3ft leftover NW windswell with a short period of 8 seconds and weak energy (171 to 138). There’s a fresh cross-offshore wind, so it’ll look clean, but it’s too small and weak to get excited about. Sunday offers a bit more hope: the morning has a 3ft westerly swell and a 10-second period with a gentle cross-off breeze, leaving the ocean clean. The wave energy picks up to 324, which is moderate. The afternoon stays clean with a light breeze but the swell drops to 3ft.
Now here’s the standout: the pick of the entire forecast has to be the morning of Sunday the 23rd. That window of 3ft swell from the W with a 10-second period, clean conditions and a light breeze, offers the most enjoyable surf of the whole run. It’s not huge, but it’s the best quality on offer, with a cross-off wind keeping things tidy.
After that, things get messy again. From Monday the 24th right through to the end of August, it’s a long stretch of poor to marginal conditions. Swell direction swings around, wind picks up, and there are rain and thunderstorms on the cards. By Thursday the 27th, the swell bumps up to a solid 8ft from the W with an 8-second period, and strong cross and onshore winds (22 mph) make it a choppy, lumpy mess – not one for the paddle surfers, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Heading into the first week of September, there’s a sign of life. Monday the 31st of August is still poor, but then Tuesday the 1st of September morning shows a change: a 4ft WNW swell with a light cross-offshore breeze from the ENE at just 6 mph. The comment says ‘expect good surf conditions’ and the wind is clean. That Tuesday morning is a real glimmer, but the afternoon goes bad again with rain and strong wind.
Wednesday the 2nd of September morning is a near-replay: a 4ft WNW swell with a light cross-offshore breeze and clean conditions. Again, a decent, if small, option.
The final days, from Thursday the 3rd to Saturday the 5th of September, drop away to tiny surf, with heights around 2ft to 1ft and very low wave energy (down to 31). Even with glassy conditions on the Saturday morning, there’s nothing to ride.
So, bottom line: the best bet is Sunday the 23rd of August morning for a clean 3ft westerly swell. After that, keep an eye on Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd of September mornings for small but clean cross-offshore waves. The rest of the run is mostly poor or tiny.
