The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get honest about what’s on the table for Pantin over the next couple of weeks. I’ve been staring at the charts, and honestly, it’s a grim start. We’re looking at a long, flat spell of junk that’s going to test your patience before a flicker of real hope shows up way down the line.
The water is sitting at 62°F right now, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so don’t be fooled by the summer calendar – you’ll want a decent suit.
The first week is a write-off. From Thursday the 16th right through to the end of next week, there’s nothing to get excited about. We’ve got tiny swell, cross-shore slop, and a lot of frustration. The wave energy is weak (33), and the wind is swinging around from the west and northeast, but it’s always putting a chop on the surface. There’s a brief moment on Monday the 20th morning where the swell bumps up to 6ft from the NNE, but the wind is still messy and the forecast is only marginal. It’s not worth the drive for that.
The real standout, the only one that gets my heart rate up, is way out there on Thursday the 30th of July. We’re looking at a solid 8ft swell from the NW, with a very long period of 13 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy – the combined energy reading is a massive 2078. This is big, powerful stuff. The wind is light from the NNE, so it’ll be cross-on, but with that light breeze, the surface should stay clean. Pantin is exposed to the NW, so it will cop the full force of this. For a spot that’s been dead for weeks, this is a serious pulse. The catch is that this is a long-range forecast, so it’s a promising signal, but not a guaranteed lock. Also, for a beach break, that 13-second period can make it a bit walled-up and straight, but the size and power will be there. This is expert territory at 8ft, so leave the foamies at home. Crowds are often an issue here, and on a day like this, they’ll be out in force.
The Friday the 31st still has some size – 7ft from the NW – but the wind picks up to a fresh breeze from the NE, so it’s going to get lumpy by the afternoon. That Thursday morning window is your best shot.
So, we’ve got a long, flat gap of about 14 days, then a single, powerful window that could be the best day of the month. Keep your eyes on the 30th, but don’t book the time off just yet.
Rusty.
