The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Playa de Doninos over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, we’ve got a long dry spell to sit through. The first few days bring nothing but poor surf conditions, with tiny swell around 2ft and a short period, plus cross-offshore winds. It’s not even worth paddling out. The water temp is sitting about average for the time of year, so that’s no surprise.

The first real glimmer of hope shows up on the morning of Monday, August 5th. We get a glassy surface with the wind dropping to almost nothing, and a tiny 2ft swell from the NW. It’s only a 1/10 in my book, but it’s surfable, and for a beginner-friendly spot, that’s a start. Still, don’t get too excited – it’s very ordinary.

The pattern stays pretty flat and windy through the following days. The wind keeps pumping from the north-east, and the swell is mostly small and weak. Not until Tuesday morning, August 11th do we see something worth circling on the calendar. That morning, the swell picks up to 4ft from the W with a 10-second period – that’s proper groundswell, clean and with a bit of push. The combined energy is moderate (319), and the wind is light cross-off from the NNE. The conditions look clean. This is a genuine standout session for the break.

Then on Wednesday morning, August 12th, it gets even better. The swell stays around 3ft from the W, period still 10 seconds, but the wind goes glassy – dead calm from the WNW. The water will be like a mirror, and the combined energy jumps to 390 (moderate). This is arguably the best of the whole run. Clean, lined-up waves for a beginner-friendly spot, and you won’t be fighting the wind.

Thursday morning, August 13th also looks promising, with glassy conditions again, 4ft swell from the W, and a 9-second period. The energy is moderate (220), and it’s clean. Another solid morning.

After that, it fades out fast. The swell drops below 3ft, the wind picks up hard from the north-east, and the last few days are just a write-off.

So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. The real standout is the morning of Wednesday, August 12th – glassy, clean, 3ft of W swell. Tuesday the 11th morning is a close second. Mark those sessions, because the rest of the window is either flat or blown out. Playa de Doninos is very consistent, so it’s not a spot that stays poor for long, but for now, you’ve got two clear windows to aim for.

Rusty.
