The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let me tell you what’s cookin’ at Playa de Doninos for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the first week and a half is a total dud. From Friday, July 31st, all the way through to the morning of Saturday, August 8th, there’s nothing worth getting wet for. The swell is tiny and the wind is all over the place. The water temperature is about 63°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year – you’ll want a full wetsuit.
The first real chance comes on the morning of Saturday, August 8th. We’ll have a clean 3ft west swell, with a 9-second period, and a cross-offshore breeze blowing at 22 mph from the north-northeast. The wave energy is moderate at 157, and with that clean wind, the waves will be shaping up nicely. It’s not a big day, but it’s the first proper surfable conditions in a long stretch. Playa de Doninos is a very consistent beginner-friendly spot, exposed to the west-northwest, so expect it to be crowded.
But the real standout is Sunday, August 9th, in the morning. The wind goes glassy out of the north, and we’ve got a 3ft west swell with an 8-second period. Energy is moderate at 126, and with those glassy conditions, the surface will be dead flat. This is the pick of the entire forecast – small, clean, and fun for a longboard. The short period means the waves will be a bit soft, but you won’t care when it’s that clean.
After that, the swell drops away again. A glassy morning on Monday, August 11th, brings a 2ft west swell, but it’s weak. The rest of the second week is mostly tiny and messy with onshore winds. The best window is tight.
So, if you’re going to paddle out, make it Sunday morning, August 9th. The Saturday morning before is also a solid backup if you don’t mind the crowds.
Rusty.
