The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the first week is a bit of a struggle. We’ve got a long, flat spell to start, with nothing really worth paddling out for until the 20th of July. Even then, it’s only marginal. The real story here is the second week, where things start to get interesting.
The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you can leave the thick rubber at home.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on the morning of the 22nd of July at Xivares. It’s just a small 4ft NNE swell, but with the wind going glassy from the NNW, the surface will be clean. Not a standout, but a chance to get wet.
The standout is the 28th of July. Tuesday morning at Xivares is looking promising with a 2ft swell from the NNW, but the real magic is Tuesday afternoon. We’ve got a clean 4ft swell from the NNW, period up at 13 seconds, and the wind is glassy. That’s proper groundswell, and the conditions will be excellent. The combined energy is strong at 652, so there’s some punch in the water. It’s a reef setup, so that long period will wrap in nicely. If you can get out there, it’s the pick of the forecast.
The 29th of July sees a jump in size, with 7ft NNW swell on Wednesday morning, but the cross-shore wind will mess with the surface a bit. It’s still a decent wave, but the afternoon gets choppy with onshore wind.
The 30th of July is a big one but only for the experts. The swell hits 10ft from the NNW, and the energy is intense, over 2700 in the morning. It’s just too big and powerful for most, and the report says it’s too big for the break. Leave this one to the pros.
The 31st of July, Friday morning, is another excellent window. 8ft of NNW swell, cross-offshore wind cleaning it up nicely, and the energy is still very strong at 1787. This is solid, expert-level surf. For those with the skills, this is a close second to the 28th.
After that, the first of August sees the swell drop back to a more manageable 5ft, but the wind comes onshore, so it’s more of a mushy end to the run.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. The 28th of July afternoon is the absolute best shot – clean, fun groundswell. The 31st of July morning is a close second for the experienced crew. Don’t sleep on that Tuesday arvo.
Rusty.
