The Lowdown
Alright, let me break down what’s coming up for us. The next couple of days are pretty flat and ordinary, but don’t write it off just yet. There’s a solid pulse of swell building towards the end of the first week, and it looks like we’ll score some clean waves before the weekend.
Right now, Sunday the 23rd is a bit of a tease. Xivares has a small 3ft NE swell, but it’s short-period at 6 seconds and the wave energy is weak (125). The morning is glassy calm, which is a rare treat, but the swell just isn’t there to do anything with. Monday and Tuesday are even smaller, with a tiny 0.7ft to 2ft NW swell and very low energy (27-40). It’s flat, plain and simple.
Then things start to wake up. Thursday the 27th morning is the first real glimmer of hope. The swell jumps to 4ft from the WNW with a period of 8 seconds, moderate energy (222), and we’ve got clean, cross-offshore winds. That’s surfable, but it’s not the standout.
The real action kicks off Friday the 28th morning. Swell builds to 8ft from the WNW, period 10 seconds, and the energy is strong (1066). The wind is clean and cross-offshore. This is proper size, but at 8ft it’s getting into the territory where beginners should sit it out. That’s a session for the experienced crew.
Saturday the 29th morning is the best of the lot. You’ve got a solid 6ft NW swell, 9-second period, strong energy (769), and glassy conditions. The wind is dead calm. That’s as good as it gets for a clean, punchy session. The swell direction (NW) is a touch off the optimum (NNW), but the clean conditions and energy make this the standout.
Sunday the 30th morning still has a decent 5ft NW swell, 8-second period, moderate energy (348), and glassy winds. It’s a good option if you missed Saturday, but the size is a bit down.
After that, the swell fades quickly. Monday the 31st drops to 2ft, and then it’s a long stretch of tiny, weak waves through the first week of September. There’s a small pulse of 5ft NW swell on Monday the 7th of September morning, with 12-second period and very good conditions expected, but that’s over a week away and less certain. Keep an eye on it.
Crowds at Xivares can be a thing, especially when the surf is good, so expect a few others in the water on those standout days.
Water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
So, bottom line: Saturday the 29th morning is the one to circle. Clean, glassy, solid 6ft NW swell. That’s our best shot.
