The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks over at Mundaka look like a real test of patience. We’ve got a painful quiet spell to get through before any real hope shows up.
Right now, the wait starts. There’s nothing worth paddling out for from Monday the 20th of July all the way through the week. The swell is tiny, the period is short, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-shore. The water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year, nothing wild. The energy is weak, reading between 30 and 174 (combined energy), and it’s just not coming together. Hold your horses.
The blank run continues straight through the weekend of the 25th-26th and into the start of the following week. The swell stays small, the wind chops things up, and the scores are flat. You’re looking at a solid 10 days of nothing, or close to nothing. On Monday the 27th, the period jumps to 10 seconds, but the swell is only 2ft-2ft – not enough to get excited about, even with a bit more energy (97-104). We’re still waiting.
Then, on Tuesday the 28th of July, things start to stir. The swell height climbs to 5ft in the morning, period 7 seconds, and the energy jumps to 211. The wind is light cross-onshore, not ideal, but the ocean is waking up. The afternoon pushes to 7ft from the NNW, with 515 energy – still onshore wind though, so it’s messy.
Now, Wednesday the 29th is where we start to see a glimmer. The morning swell is 7ft at 8 seconds from the NNW, and the energy is strong at 608. The wind is light cross-onshore. It’s still a bit lumpy, but this is the first time it’s been called “marginal” instead of “poor.” The afternoon jumps to a massive 1043 energy, but the onshore wind picks up, so it’s a washout. Trust me, you’ll be watching this one from the sand.
Here’s your standout: Thursday morning, the 30th of July. This is the one. The swell is holding at 6ft, period jumps to a beautiful 11 seconds, and the energy is a solid 836. The wind is glassy – dead calm, offshore from the NNW. That’s the magic combo. At Mundaka, a river mouth, a long period groundswell like this can be a thing of beauty. The wave will be wrapping in clean, lined up, and with that glassy surface, it’ll be as good as it gets. This is a true expert wave, and with 6ft swell, it’s going to be pumping. Conditions are rated “expect very good surf.” The crowds are listed as “often” here, so expect company, but for a morning like that, it’ll be worth jostling for a spot. The afternoon goes onshore again, so make the most of the morning session.
After that, things get messy again. Friday the 31st has a 4ft, 10-second NNW swell, but the wind goes strong cross-shore, and by the afternoon it’s a strong breeze from the WNW at 25 mph, just shredding the surface. The first week of August is a write-off: tiny swell, onshore winds, and energy dropping right back down. By Monday the 3rd of August, the swell is down to 1ft, and on Tuesday the 4th, it’s flat and glassy but with zero power.
So, to sum it up: you’ve got a long, dry spell until Thursday the 30th of July. That morning is your only real shot, and it’s a beauty. After that, it’s back to a waiting game. Surf’s up, but only for the patient.
Rusty.
