The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, looking at the next couple of weeks for Mundaka. It’s a bit of a mixed bag to start, but there are a couple of real windows that’ll get the blood pumping. The water is sitting at a toasty 76°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a nice surprise for your session.
First up, we’ve got a pretty quiet start. Nothing worth paddling out for on Wednesday the 19th or Thursday the 20th – just small, messy junk. Friday the 21st has some size pushing 6 ft from the NW with a 10-second period, but the cross-onshore wind is killing any chance of quality, so it’s a hard pass. The combined wave energy is moderate (565), but it’s not doing us any favours here.
The first glimpse of something better comes Saturday the 22nd morning. We’ve got a 4 ft NW swell, period of 9 seconds, and best of all, glassy conditions with a NNE breeze at just 3 mph. It’s small but clean – surfable waves, just very ordinary. The energy is moderate (230). Still, a nice little window to get wet if you’re keen.
Sunday the 23rd drops back off, and Monday the 24th has a morning window with 4 ft from the NNW and a light cross-offshore breeze – clean but tiny, with weak energy (123). Monday afternoon turns ugly with a risk of thunderstorms and a strong cross-onshore. Not worth it.
Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th are both forgettable – small, cross-shore chop, and no quality.
Now, Thursday the 27th morning is a standout for experts only. We’ve got a solid 10 ft swell from the WNW with a 10-second period, and the wind is cross-offshore from the WSW at 12 mph – clean lines. The combined energy is very strong (1840). This is serious size, over 8 ft, so it’s strictly for experienced surfers. The tide and conditions will be tricky, so pick your moment. Thursday afternoon turns choppy again.
Friday the 28th morning is your best bet of the whole forecast. Glassy conditions with a SSW breeze at just 3 mph, a 6 ft NW swell with a 10-second period, and strong energy (650). The waves should be good – clean, solid, and with that long-period groundswell feeling. Mundaka is a river mouth, so that long period (10 secs) is right at home here. Expect crowds, because this spot is often packed when it’s on.
After that, we’ve got a run of average to poor days through to the end of August, with onshore winds and lumpy conditions. A couple of mornings (29th and 30th) have some size but the wind is too strong or cross-shore to make it worthwhile.
Looking into the first week of September, Monday the 31st of August morning sees a massive 8 ft NW swell with a very long 13-second period – proper groundswell. The combined energy is extremely strong (2154). But it’s cross-shore wind and marginal tide issues, so only for the keen and experienced. Tuesday the 1st of September is similar: 10 ft at 12 seconds, cross-shore, marginal.
The real promise comes on Wednesday the 2nd of September morning. Clean, clear skies, a light cross-offshore breeze from the SE at 6 mph, and a 5 ft NW swell with a 10-second period. Combined energy is strong (560). This is a long-range call, so it’s a bit less certain, but if it comes together, it’ll be a beauty. Thursday the 3rd morning drops back to a smaller 4 ft NW swell, clean but only surfable.
For the standout, I’d say Friday the 28th August morning is the pick – glassy, solid 6 ft, and clean. Thursday the 27th morning is the big-wave option for experts. Wednesday the 2nd September morning is a promising long-range shout if you can wait.
Keep an eye on the tides and don’t sleep on that Friday morning glass-off.
