Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here. Let's chew the fat on what Mundaka is serving up for the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with ya – the forecast is a bit of a slow burner.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a dry spell. For the first few days, from Tuesday the 7th right through to Saturday the 11th, it’s looking flat and poor. Tiny little 0.3 to 0.6 ft slop with a short period, plus the wind is mostly sideshore or onshore. Not worth getting wet for. The combined wave energy is sitting under 100 (35 to 90) for most of that time, which is weak stuff. You can leave the board in the car.
Now, things start to look a little more interesting on Sunday morning, 12th July. We get a bit of a window. Swell is still only 0.6 ft from the NW, with a period of 10 seconds creating a weak energy of 85. But the wind goes glassy – a clean ENE breeze at just 3 mph. That’s a window for the early crew. The wave comment says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," which is being generous. It’s a small, clean morning, so if you’re desperate for a slide on a longboard, that’s your shot. But it’s not a standout by any means.
After that little window, we hit another dry patch. From Sunday afternoon right through to the 19th of July, it’s back to small, poor quality surf with messy winds. A lot of cross-offshore and cross-onshore slop that won’t shape up into anything decent at the river mouth.
There is a late pulse of energy worth watching, but it comes with a major caveat. On Monday the 20th of July, the swell starts to pick up. Monday morning sees 3 ft from the WNW, an 8-second period, and combined energy hitting 136 (moderate). By Monday afternoon, it jumps further to 5 ft from the WNW, but the period drops to just 6 seconds, and the wind cranks up to a strong 25 mph cross-shore. The energy is 173, but the wave comment says "poor surf conditions." That wind is going to blow the surface to pieces. That afternoon looks like it’s more for the windsurfers and kitesurfers than us.
The best bet in this entire 16-day window, and it’s a distant one, is Tuesday the 21st of July morning. The swell drops back a touch to 4 ft from the NW, with a 6-second period. The energy drops to 82 (weak), but the wind shifts to a light 6 mph cross-onshore from the NW. It’s still a small, short-period swell, but the lighter breeze will make it the cleanest of that late period. It’s not going to be firing like a classic Mundaka, but it might be the most surfable day we see in that second week.
In summary, don't get your hopes up for a classic Mundaka session in the first week. The Sunday 12th morning offers a brief, clean lull for the patient longboarder. The real pulse of size on Monday 20th is blown out. The most reliable-looking option, and it’s only a slight nod, is Tuesday 21st morning for some smaller, manageable waves with decent conditions.
Rusty.
