Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. It’s Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Mundaka. I gotta be straight with you: this is a frustrating 16-day window. The forecast is a long, flat spell with a few flickers of life way out there, but nothing that’s going to get the blood pumping for a while.
Right now, and for the next week and a half, it’s pretty much a desert. The water is sitting at a balmy 73°, which is a whopping 6° warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a very unusual warm spell, but it’s not doing us any favors for waves. We’re looking at tiny 0.7ft to 2ft dribbles from the NW for days on end. The energy is weak, barely cracking 60 (62) on the combined swell scale. The wind is a mixed bag of light cross-onshore breezes or glassy mornings, but it doesn’t matter because there’s simply no swell to work with. The whole first week is a write-off.
Then we hit the second week. Things start to look a little more interesting, but it’s a slow burn. By Monday the 13th of July, we finally see the swell climb a bit, with a 4ft NW swell giving us a reading of 160 (moderate wave energy). The wind is light and cross-onshore, but it’s still not recommended. The real kicker comes on Friday the 17th of July. The afternoon shows a jump in the swell to 5ft from the WNW, with a solid 219 energy reading. The wind is onshore and choppy, but the swell is building.
But the real stand-out, the one that has my attention, is the morning of Sunday the 19th of July. That’s the one to keep an eye on. We’re looking at a 8ft NW swell with a massive 537 energy reading. That’s strong, powerful stuff. The swell direction is a perfect match for the river mouth. The catch? The wind is cross-onshore from the WNW at 12 mph, which will put a chop on it. For a spot like Mundaka, that’s a big, powerful swell, but the wind is a bummer. This is expert territory only—8ft is too big for beginners. The swell period is a short 7 seconds, which means it’s wind swell, not a clean groundswell, so the shape might be a bit lumpy. Still, it’s the biggest pulse in the whole forecast.
The following Monday the 20th of July still has size, with 5ft to 5ft NW swell and 300+ energy, but it’s accompanied by rain showers and more cross-onshore wind. Then it’s back to small stuff.
So, the honest truth? For the next 10 days, you’re better off doing something else. The one standout, the Sunday the 19th, is a long-range call, so it’s promising but less certain. It’s the only real window of power in an otherwise flat outlook.
Rusty.
