The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Mundaka and the surrounding area.
To be straight with you, the next 16 days are a real mixed bag, and for the most part, it’s looking pretty quiet. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak surf ahead, with the first real action not showing up for a while. The good news is that the water is running much warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 76°.
Wednesday 15th July kicks off with nothing doing – just tiny 0.7ft of WNW swell and a cross wind. You’d be wasting your time. That flat, poor quality spell hangs around through the rest of the week and into the weekend. The swell barely flickers, with heights staying under 3ft and the combined energy barely reaching 23. Even when we get a glassy morning on Thursday 16th, the waves are just too small to bother with.
Monday 20th July we start to see a bit of a pulse, with the swell picking up to 3ft from the NNW and the combined energy climbing to 168. It’s still not great, but it’s a sign of life. That trend continues into Tuesday 21st July with 4ft swell from the north, but the wind is cross-on, so the quality is still lacking.
The first real standout, and honestly the only one worth circling on the calendar, is Saturday 25th July. We’ve got a 6ft swell from the WNW in the morning, building to 6ft from the NW by the afternoon. The combined energy hits 228 in the morning and 299 in the afternoon – that’s proper moderate wave energy. The wind is a cross to cross-on, so it’s going to be a bit lumpy, but this is the biggest swell of the window. For a river mouth like Mundaka, which is fairly exposed to the NW, this is the day to go. It’s going to be a proper expert-level session though – 6ft is getting up there, and the period is only 6-7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit short-period and not the cleanest groundswell. Still, it’s the best on offer.
After that peak, Sunday 26th July still has some push with 4ft swell from the NNW, but the energy drops off. By Monday 27th July we’re back into the small stuff again, and the last few days of the month are flat and not worth a mention.
Overall: It’s a quiet outlook. The best bet is definitely Saturday 25th July at Mundaka, when the swell finally shows some teeth. For the rest of the time, you’re better off doing something else or waiting for a better forecast. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on some of those windier days. Keep an eye on it, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
