The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s talk about what’s happening with the waves. We’ve got a bit of a flat spell ahead, but there’s some serious promise further out.
The next week or so is a tough one. Right now through the end of August, we’re looking at a lot of poor conditions. The swell is small and messy, and the wind is mostly cross or onshore, making things choppy. There’s a couple of clean moments, like the morning of the 23rd with a light offshore touch, but the swell is tiny at only 2ft from the NW. It’s a real struggle to find anything rideable.
We hit a bit of a gap from the 24th through to the 27th. The swell is just too small or the wind is wrong. There’s a brief pulse on the 27th afternoon with a 6ft NW swell, but the cross-onshore wind kills it. It’s a write-off until we get to the 28th.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Friday morning, the 28th of August, is the standout of the whole outlook. Mundaka is looking at a clean 8ft swell from the northwest, with light offshore wind from the WSW. The combined energy is pumping at 926, showing solid power. This is a classic Mundaka setup – a long period swell (10 seconds) pushing down that river mouth, and with the wind offshore, it’s going to be glassy and hollow. This is expert territory, though. At over 8ft, it’s big and powerful, not for the faint of heart. The river mouth setup means it’ll handle that long period well, giving you long, tapering barrels. Expect crowds, because this spot is famous and consistent.
The following Saturday morning, the 29th, also offers a decent window. Swell drops to 5ft from the NW, but the wind is light offshore from the SE again, keeping things clean. Energy is still solid at 489. It won’t be as critical as Friday, but still a good session before the wind swings onshore in the afternoon.
Then we have another lull. The last few days of August and into early September are mostly small and unremarkable. The mornings on the 30th, 31st, and 1st of September have some glassy or clean conditions, but the swell is small to marginal (3ft to 5ft). It's surfable but nothing to write home about.
Mark your calendar for Thursday morning, the 3rd of September. This is another promising swell, bigger than the 28th. We’re looking at a 6ft swell from the NW, but with a very long period of 12 seconds, pushing the combined energy to 1025. The wind is light offshore from the WSW – clean and glassy. This is a groundswell, and at Mundaka, that’s a big deal. The rip bowls will be working, and the wave will have serious push. This is also a big, powerful day, best for experts. It’s a week and a half out, so the forecast might shift, but the potential is massive.
To boil it down: the best windows are the mornings of the 28th of August and the 3rd of September. The 28th is the surest bet in the near term, with big, clean waves. The 3rd of September has the potential to be even better, but it’s a longer-range call, so keep an eye on it. The rest of the time, you’ll be waiting more than surfing.
Rusty.
