The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk Mundaka in feet and Fahrenheit.
Right off the bat, the first week is a real struggle. The water is sitting at 76°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year – feels like a bathtub – but the waves are almost non-existent. From now through the end of August, you’re looking at flat to tiny surf, maybe 1 to 2 feet, with the wind mostly cross-on or choppy. Not worth getting the board wet.
Friday the 28th of August morning is when it finally cracks open. The swell hits 10 feet from the NW with a 12-second period – that’s a heavy groundswell. The combined energy is 2647 (very strong wave energy). That’s big, powerful, and dangerous. Over 8 feet, only for experts. The morning has cross-off winds from the SSW so it’ll be clean, but the wave will be a beast. Afternoon gets messy with a fresh cross-onshore.
Saturday the 29th drops to about 6 feet from the NW, still decent energy (627 combined energy), but the wind is light and cross-shore, and the surf is marginal.
Now, the real standout: Sunday the 30th of August morning. The swell is a nice, manageable 5 feet from the NW with a 9-second period, and the wind goes glassy – dead calm from the ENE. That’s as clean as it gets. Combined energy is 365 (moderate wave energy), but the quality will be the draw. This is your best shot in the whole outlook. The wave will have good shape, the sets will have some push, and there won’t be any wind chop. Crowds are common here, so you’ll have company, but it’ll be worth it.
Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st of September drop back to small stuff – 3 feet or less – with cross or cross-on winds. Not much to talk about.
The second week is patchy but has some potential. Wednesday the 2nd to Friday the 4th of September is mostly tiny – 1 to 2 feet – and poor. Saturday the 5th of September morning sees a pulse to 4 feet from the NW (9 seconds), but the wind is cross-shore and the rating is poor. Sunday the 6th of September afternoon has a 7-foot NW groundswell (12 seconds, combined energy 1124 – strong wave energy) but with a moderate cross-shore breeze. Lumpy but powerful. Monday the 7th of September morning pushes 7 feet with onshore wind and light rain – not clean. Afternoon is 7 feet with a gentle cross-onshore, still marginal.
Summary: your best bet is Sunday the 30th of August morning – glassy, 5 feet, firing. The big Friday the 28th is only for the hardcore. Everything else is small, messy, or too far off to call with confidence. Keep an eye on Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th of September – there’s power coming, but the wind will make or break it.
Rusty.
