Alright, this is Rusty. Let me level with you straight up. The next couple of weeks at Mundaka? It's gonna be a tough watch. The setup is there, that famous river mouth, but the ocean just isn't cooperating for a proper session.
Looking at the whole 16-day window, we’re starting with a real flat spell. For surf, we're looking at tiny waves for the first week and a bit. The early days, from the 5th to the 16th of July, are mostly a write-off. There are long gaps of days where there’s just nothing worth paddling out for. You’ll see plenty of mornings with glassy conditions, like the 5th, 9th, 15th, and 16th, which is a major positive for the look of the water, but the swell is just too weak to push anything meaningful down the point. The combined swell energy is laughably low, often in the double digits or low triple digits, like the 102 on the morning of the 5th.
Things try to get a little interesting around the 12th and 13th, with the swell height bumping up to a little over 4 ft, but the wind is an issue—mostly cross-onshore or straight onshore—and the period is short, ruining any chance of a clean wave. It’s choppy and messy.
Then, the one real standout of the whole forecast, and it's a long way off, is on Friday the 17th of July. That morning, we see a proper bump in the groundswell, hitting nearly 6 ft from the WNW. The combined energy jumps up to 282, which is a serious pulse of energy for this spot. The wind is cross-shore, which isn't perfect, but it's the biggest swell we see. Now, this is a wave for experts only. At over 5 ft, Mundaka starts throwing out heavy, critical barrels, especially with that river mouth current. The period is short, around 7 seconds, so it'll be a bit lumpy and won't have that long, clean groundswell travel. It's a promising, but less certain call being so far out. The swell direction of WNW is offshore for Mundaka, which is ideal.
The water temperature on the 5th of July is sitting at 73°F. That’s a massive 6° above what’s normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, a real anomaly. The water is noticeably warmer than you’d expect, so you can leave the thicker wetsuit at home.
So, honestly? If you’re dead set on Mundaka, wait to see if that Friday the 17th morning materializes. Otherwise, the setup over this whole stretch looks more interesting for a kite surfer to get some air than for a paddle surfer to get a decent wave. The conditions are just against us.
Rusty.
