The Lowdown
Alright, I’m looking at the forecast for Mundaka, and I gotta be straight with you — it’s a tough start. For the next week and a half, the swell is way too small, the wind is pushing onshore, and the energy just isn’t there. The first real glimmer of something rideable doesn’t show up until the morning of Tuesday, July 28th, and even then, it’s a very ordinary day. The swell is only 3ft from the NW, with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate at 173. The water is warm, around 75°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year — that’s a very unusual spike, more than 3° above average.
Now, the real story comes at the end of the month. Thursday the 30th of July is the standout. You’ve got a solid 8ft NW swell rolling in, with a period of 10 seconds in the morning, building to 12 seconds by the afternoon. The combined energy is strong to very strong (1150 in the morning, 1919 in the afternoon). That’s serious power. The wind goes light and offshore (NNW) in the afternoon, which will clean things up nicely. But listen — this is Mundaka, a river mouth, expert-only wave. At 8ft, this is for experts only. Beginners, stay on the beach. The swell direction from the NW is exactly what this spot wants.
The 31st of July (Friday) is still solid, but a little wind-affected. 8ft NW swell, 11-second period, with a cross-shore breeze in the morning (WNW at 9 mph) and a cross-onshore in the afternoon. Combined energy is still strong (1327 in the morning, 990 in the afternoon). It’s still good, but the Thursday morning and afternoon window is the cleanest and most powerful.
After that, it drops off fast. The 1st of August sees the swell fading to 5ft, with a cross-shore wind and moderate energy (398). It’s not the same quality.
So, to boil it down: you’ve got about a week and a half of flat, frustrating conditions, then a short, punchy window of very good, expert-level surf on the 30th and 31st of July. The Thursday the 30th is the best bet — that clean, offshore afternoon session could be special. But don’t book your trip for it, because long-range forecasts can change. For now, it’s a waiting game.
