The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it.
The next couple of weeks are gonna test our patience, that's for sure. We've got a window of small, weak surf to start, a bit of a pulse mid-period that gets messy, and then the back half of the forecast—while not huge—looks like it's gonna settle into something a whole lot more rideable. You gotta pick your moments, and I’m here to help you find 'em.
We’re looking at Los Locos for this whole stretch. It’s a consistent break, so it's always in the mix, but consistent doesn't always mean good.
The first few days are a write-off. Wednesday the 19th and into Thursday the 20th, the swell is tiny and weak, with the energy reading just 13 and 15 (weak) on Wednesday. The wind is all over the place, cross-onshore, and there's just nothing to get excited about. Thursday morning does see a bump in size to 4ft but the energy is still moderate at 384, and with rain and moderate breeze, it’s just not clean. You're better off doing something else.
Friday the 21st sees the swell push up to 6ft, and the energy jumps into the strong range, hitting 715. The problem is the wind. It's cross-onshore and choppy in the morning, and while the afternoon cleans up a bit, it's still cross-shore and lumpy. This is that classic case where there's plenty of water moving, but the quality is shot. If you’re a beginner, 6ft is already over that 5ft mark, so give this one a miss.
Then we get a little taste of what could be. Saturday the 22nd is our first real standout. The swell drops to a clean 4ft from the NW with a 9-second period. The morning is glassy, with the wind going almost calm, and the energy is an acceptable 212 (moderate). This is your classic clean, fun-size surf. It’s not big, but it’s got push and it’s gonna be smooth. The afternoon looks good too, with a light offshore wind and clean conditions. This is a good day to get wet.
Sunday the 23rd is a step down. The swell stays just around 3ft, but the period drops to 7 seconds, which is short-period windslop. The energy weakens significantly to under 100, and while the wind is clean, the waves just won't have any power. It's surfable, but very ordinary.
Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are poor. Swell drops off, and the energy is super weak, down in the 40s and 15s. The period gets really short, and it's just dribble. Not worth the paddle.
Wednesday the 26th is still poor, with cross-onshore winds and no decent swell. But make a note for Thursday the 27th. The morning is a messy, choppy 4ft with a short period. Not good. But the afternoon, the swell isn't big, 3ft, but the period stretches out to 12 seconds, which is proper groundswell. The energy is moderate at 306. It's still cross-shore so it's not perfect, but you can feel that there's some real water moving on the bottom.
And then the back half of the forecast starts to shine. Friday the 28th is another standout. The morning is glassy again, a clean 4ft of NW swell with a 10-second period. The energy is moderate at 230. It's clean, it's tidy, and it's got some push. This is the kind of surf that makes you forget about the flat spell. The afternoon stays clean with light offshore winds.
Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th are more of the same, with clean 4ft surf, although the energy is a bit lower. It's still well worth a look, especially with those light winds and clean conditions.
The best of the bunch, though, looks like Monday the 31st of August. The morning is glassy again with a 3ft, 10-second swell and moderate energy (242). But the afternoon is the pick: the swell nudges up to 4ft, the period drops slightly to 8 seconds, but the wind goes gentle offshore and it's clean. The energy reading is 325, which is the strongest of that whole clean spell.
After that, we drift back into smaller, weaker surf for the first few days of September. The morning of Tuesday the 1st of September is glassy but the energy is faltering (152) and the surf looks to ease off again.
So, if you're picking your days, Saturday the 22nd and Friday the 28th are your best bets for clean, fun waves. The afternoon of Monday the 31st is also looking prime. Those are the standouts. Everything else is a case of managing expectations.
Oh, and the water temp is running about average for this time of year, so the 3/2 will be fine.
Later.
Rusty.
