The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper squiz at the next couple of weeks down at Los Locos. We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but hold on to your board, because there’s some serious action building for the end of the month that you won’t want to miss.
The first few days are a straight-up write-off. Nothing but small, weak waves with bugger-all energy. It’s a real flat spell to kick things off. Expect a gap of a few days with nothing worth paddling out for. The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a nice little bonus when you do get out.
The first real sign of life shows up on Thursday the 29th. The morning is a bit messy with a light cross-onshore breeze, but it's the afternoon that gets the blood pumping. We see the swell jump to a clean 7ft from the NW, with light offshore winds. The energy is solid, moderate to strong. This is the first day that really stands out.
Then we hit the jackpot. The period from Saturday the 30th through to Monday the 1st of September is the absolute standout of this whole outlook. We’ve got a solid, consistent run of good surf. The mornings are glassy with light winds and the swell holds in that sweet 6ft to 7ft range from the NW. The afternoons are clean with offshore breezes. The wave energy is strong, hitting those four-digit numbers, meaning there’s plenty of push behind them. This is as good as it gets.
The break itself is an exposed NW spot, which is exactly where this swell is coming from, so it’s going to be handling it well. The period hangs around the 9-11 second mark, so it’s got some decent shape to it. This is when you want to be in the water. Given it’s a consistent spot, you won’t be waiting long between sets. Keep in mind that with the size, it might be pushing it for beginners on the bigger days, but for anyone with a bit of experience, it’s going to be pumping.
After that run, the surf backs off a bit into the first few days of September. It settles down, but there is one more gem hiding in there. On Friday the 4th of September, the forecast throws a curveball. The morning is small and clean, but the afternoon shows a jump to 7ft from the NW with light offshore winds and the combined energy is huge, over 1200. It’s a longer period swell, too, which means it’ll be powerful and lined up. This one is for the experienced crew. It’s a week away, so keep an eye on it, but it looks very promising.
So, the long and short of it: the next few days are a bust, but the end of the month and the start of September have some serious potential. Mark the 30th and 31st in your calendar – that’s the pick of the bunch.
Rusty out.
