Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's shaping up for Los Locos over the next couple of weeks.
First up, the water is sitting at a notable 71°F right now, which is a solid 5°F warmer than you’d expect for this time of year. That’s pretty unusual, so don’t be surprised if it feels more like a warm bath than the open ocean.
The week kicks off with a really nice window on Friday the 3rd. Morning glass-off conditions with a clean 4ft NW swell at 11 seconds. The wind is barely a whisper out of the NE, making it glassy as can be. The combined energy is solid at 324, so there’s some push behind those waves. This is the standout of the whole run. It’s a consistent spot, but given how good the conditions line up, expect the crowds to be likely.
Friday afternoon holds up well too, with a clean offshore wind from the NE, though the swell period drops a little to 10 seconds. Still, plenty of fun to be had.
Saturday the 4th keeps it clean but the swell drops to 3ft. It’s surfable but not special. Winds stay offshore from the ENE. Sunday the 5th sees things get smaller and more ordinary, with a brief spike of wind on Sunday afternoon that knocks the quality down.
We hit a bit of a flat patch from late Sunday through the following week. The swell gets tiny, down to 1ft or 2ft, and the wind turns onshore or cross-onshore for several days. This stretch from the 7th to the 12th of July is pretty much a bust. You’d be stretching to find anything worthwhile.
Things start to look up again on Monday the 13th of July. Monday morning is glassy again with a small 2ft NW swell, but the real highlight is Monday afternoon. That’s when a nice pulse of NW swell at 3ft with a long 13-second period shows up. The combined energy jumps up to 325, and with a light cross-offshore wind, it’s going to be clean and lined up. This is another one to circle on the calendar.
Tuesday the 14th is a bit mixed. The morning has a bit of cross-on wind, but the swell holds around 4ft with decent period. The afternoon improves with a cross-off breeze and a 3ft WNW swell, still carrying good energy at 297. Worth a look if you’re keen.
The middle of the week goes quiet again, with small surf and mostly onshore winds from the 15th to the 17th.
Then, hold onto your board. The real bomb drops on Saturday the 18th of July. The morning is glassy with a 6ft NW swell that’s packing serious energy – a combined 615. That puts this firmly in the “big and strong” category. It’s going to be a fun challenge, but over 5ft, so beginners might want to sit this one out. The afternoon gets even bigger, with 7ft NW swell at 873 energy, and light offshore winds. This is well into expert-only territory at over 8ft, but for the crew that can handle it, it’s going to be firing. Just keep in mind that at 9 seconds, the period is a little short, so it might be a bit walled-up and lumpy. With a 7ft height, it could be more of a kite-surfing playground for those with the skills. Still, the standout for end of the run.
Summing it up: Friday the 3rd and Monday the 13th are your two best bets for clean, fun waves with good conditions. The big swell at the end of the run is for the brave.
Rusty.
