The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into this one. It’s a bit of a slow start here, but we’ve got a run of promising days ahead if you’re patient.

Right now, the water is sitting at a warm 72°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a solid 4° above the long-term average. That’s a real treat for the skin.

The first few days are a write-off. Saturday the 18th through Sunday the 19th are tiny, messy, and weak. The swell is barely there, with combined energy hanging around 7 to 23 (weak), and the waves are poor. Not worth paddling out for.

Monday the 20th is where things start to turn. Overnight, a new pulse of swell arrives. Early morning, we’re looking at 5 ft from the NNE with a short period of 7 seconds and combined energy jumping to 208 (moderate). The wind is glassy. That’s clean, small, but rideable. By afternoon, the swell bumps to 5 ft, period stretches to 8 seconds, and the wind goes offshore from the NE at 12 mph. The energy is up to 291 (moderate). This is the first real standout of the forecast. Los Locos will be clean and fun, especially for the beginner to intermediate crew. The swell is still a bit short-period, so it will be a bit bumpy, but the offshore wind will tidy it up.

Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd hold okay shape with waist-high waves and clean offshore winds, but the energy drops a bit. These are surfable, but nothing to write home about.

Thursday the 23rd through Saturday the 26th is a flat, grotty stretch. The swell fades to ankle-to-knee high, the wind turns cross-onshore, and the combined energy plummets to below 80. There’s a gap of nearly four days with no real surf. Don’t bother.

Sunday the 27th looks interesting. The morning brings 5 ft from the NW with a period of 10 seconds, and combined energy of 462 (strong). The wind is light cross-shore, so it’s a bit lumpy but there’s push. The afternoon is cleaner: 5 ft, 10 seconds, with a cross-offshore breeze from the NNW. Energy is 350 (strong). This is solid, and the swell is starting to get some real power.

Monday the 28th is a mixed bag. Morning has light rain and onshore wind, so it’s messy. But the afternoon cleans up with a cross-offshore wind and 4 ft from the NW. The energy is still good at 207 (moderate).

Tuesday the 29th morning is a gem. 4 ft from the NNW, 9 seconds, with a light offshore breeze from the NE at 9 mph. Combined energy is 241 (moderate). Clean, lined up, and fun.

Thursday the 30th is the real standout. Morning is glassy, 4 ft from the NW with a 10-second period, and energy of 321 (strong). The afternoon is even better: 5 ft from the NNW, 10 seconds, light cross-offshore wind, and combined energy of 562 (very strong). This is the best session of the entire forecast. The swell is clean, the waves will have real shape, and the wind is perfect.

Friday the 31st continues that strong run. Both morning and afternoon are glassy, with 6 ft from the NNW, 10 seconds, and combined energy of 635 and 688 (very strong). This is powerful, clean surf. The swell is over 5 ft, so it’s better for intermediate surfers and above. Best of the lot.

The first few days of August (Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd) see the quality drop. The swell is still there (4 ft to 5 ft, 11 seconds), but the wind turns cross-onshore and cross-shore, making it choppy and less inviting.

Overall, the standout windows are Monday 20th afternoon, Thursday 30th, and Friday 31st. If you’re picking one, Friday 31st is the best of the lot – glassy, solid, and powerful. The long-range stuff (30th and 31st) is looking promising, but we’ll have to see how the models hold up. For now, mark your calendar.

Rusty.
