The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Los Locos has got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the first week or so is a bit of a mixed bag. We've got a small window of clean conditions on Saturday morning the 22nd, but it's not the main event. The real standout is shaping up for Saturday morning, September 5th. That's a fair way off, so keep that in mind – it's a promising one, but we've got some time to see if it firms up.
Let's start with the near-term. Saturday morning, August 22nd, is worth a mention. The winds are light and cross-offshore from the east at 9 mph, and the water is a touch warmer than usual at 72.5°. We're looking at a clean 3.6 ft NW swell with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 212, so there's some push there. It's a good, clean option for a beginner-friendly wave at Los Locos. It's a consistent break, and it's often a bit crowded, so expect to share the peak.
That afternoon, the wind picks up a bit onshore and the swell drops, so the morning is definitely the session.
After that, things get pretty ordinary. Sunday the 23rd has some small, surfable waves but nothing to get excited about. From Monday the 24th through to the end of August, we're looking at a real dry spell. There are a few glassy mornings with tiny, weak swells, but the combined energy drops to two-digit numbers (as low as 11), and the quality just isn't there. The Thursday morning of the 27th has a bit more size at 3.9 ft, but the wind is onshore, so it's a messy one.
Friday the 28th sees a big spike in energy, with a 9.8 ft NW swell packing a massive 2504 combined energy. Sounds epic, right? Problem is, the wind is a strong cross-onshore, and the period is a long 12 seconds. For a beach break like Los Locos, that long period groundswell can make it break a bit too straight and crumbly, and with the wind chop, it's going to be a mess. That one's strictly for the experts only, and honestly, with those conditions, it might be more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing one.
The first few days of September are more of the same – small, inconsistent waves with clean conditions but no real power. The energy is weak, mostly under 100.
Then we get to the highlight. Saturday morning, September 5th. The forecast shows a clean 3.6 ft NW swell with a 10-second period, which is a nice, solid groundswell. The combined energy is a healthy 237 (moderate), and the wind is forecast to be glassy, dead calm. That's a ticket to a clean, fun wave. The swell direction matches the optimum for Los Locos (NW), and the water is still that comfortable temperature. It's a consistent break, and with clean conditions and a decent swell, it'll be popular. This is easily the best session on offer in the whole 16-day window. Just remember, it's a long-range call, so keep your fingers crossed.
The rest of that weekend is a bit of a letdown by comparison, with onshore winds and choppy conditions.
So, surf's been a bit slow, but we've got a couple of decent windows. The Saturday morning of the 22nd is a solid, immediate option, but the real gem is that Saturday morning, September 5th. Keep an eye on that one.
