Right, grab a coffee and listen up – Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: this is a lean run for Los Locos. The whole 16-day stretch is a quiet one, with only small, weak swell and a lot of wind issues. The best of a very average bunch is the Sunday morning session on the 12th of July, but that’s a low bar, and the Saturday morning on the 11th is okay if you’re desperate.
The Overall Picture
We’ve got a long, flat spell ahead. The first 15 days are mostly small, weak, and messy. The combined energy of all swells directed here drops to two-digit figures most days, barely cracking 70 on the 11th, and often sitting in the 10-60 range, which is weak. The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 70°, about 3° above average.
Saturday, 11th July
Saturday morning is your best early call. Los Locos is a consistent, exposed NW spot, and we’ve got a tiny 2ft NW swell with a 11-second period, which is a long-period groundswell. It’s only 2ft so it’s a beginner-friendly size, but the period is long enough that it might break a bit straight on the beach. The wind is light offshore from the ENE at 9 mph, keeping it clean. The combined energy is weak (96), but it’s surfable. Saturday afternoon gets windier – 16 mph offshore – and the surf drops off in quality.
Sunday, 12th July
Sunday morning is the highlight. A glassy, 2ft NW swell with a 9-second period and the wind is a dead flat 3 mph from the SE. It’s a tiny, clean wave for the beginners. The combined energy is just 60, so it’s weak, but it’s the best you’ll feel. The afternoon brings a risk of thunderstorms and a cross-shore wind, so get out early.
The Long, Quiet Middle
From Monday the 13th right through to the 21st of July, it’s a lot of nothing. The swell barely moves above 3ft, and the wind is often cross-shore or cross-on. Monday morning (13th) is glassy with 3ft, but the period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s a weak, choppy mess. The rest of that week is a write-off – tiny swell (0.7ft to 2ft) and bad wind directions. The crowd profile at Los Locos is “often”, so on a rare glassy day, expect a few others out there.
A Glimmer in the Second Week
Tuesday the 21st of July morning shows a tiny bump. A 3ft NW swell with a 6-second period, but the wind is offshore from the NE at 3 mph, so it’s clean. The combined energy is still weak at 72. The afternoon of the 21st and the morning of the 22nd see the energy climb to 133 and 139 respectively, which is moderate, with a 3ft to 3ft NW swell and offshore winds. It’s still small, but it’s the most energy we see in the whole window. The 22nd afternoon shows a 4ft NW swell, but a cross-shore wind kills it.
The Final Days
From the 23rd of July onward, it’s back to poor conditions. Rain, strong cross-shore winds, and tiny swell. The 24th of July has a fresh breeze at 19 mph, making it lumpy and unappealing. The 26th of July is glassy but with only 1.0ft of swell.
The best bet is a quick session on the morning of the 12th of July, or the morning of the 21st if you can wait. It’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
