The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's break down the surf outlook for Los Locos over the next couple of weeks. It’s a tale of two forecasts, really – a slow, drawn-out start with a few fun but small windows, and then one solid, standout pulse of swell way out at the end that’s got my attention.
The opening days are pretty weak. Tuesday the 18th has some surfable, small waves, around `2ft` from the NNW, but the period is short and there’s no punch to it. The wind is offshore, so it’ll be clean, but it’s just not doing much. Then it goes flat. Wednesday the 19th is dead glassy with almost nothing, and it stays that way through Thursday morning. Thursday afternoon sees a small pulse fill in, bumping up to about `4ft` from the NW with a longer 12-second period. The wind goes light cross-off and it looks clean. That’s the first real window, and it’s a decent one for a smaller day. Friday the 21st keeps that energy, with `5ft` of NW swell. Friday morning has a bit of cross-shore bump, but Friday afternoon turns it on with glassy conditions. For a longer-period swell like this, look towards the points and reefs, as it might be a bit straight for the beach breaks.
After that, the taps get turned way down. From Saturday the 22nd through to about Wednesday the 27th, we’re looking at dribbly waves in the `2-3ft` range. There’s a lot of onshore and cross-onshore wind, and the period drops back to a weak 6-9 seconds. It’s pretty poor, to be honest. There might be a few clean, glassy windows like Sunday morning, but there just won’t be any size or power to make it worth your while.
The end of the month brings a small improvement. Thursday the 27th has a clean, glassy morning with around `2ft` of NW swell and a longer 11-second interval. It’s small, but a fun option.
The one to circle on the calendar is the morning of Tuesday, the 2nd of September. The long-range models are showing a proper pulse of groundswell, with waves jumping to around `7-8ft` from the NW with a 13-second period. The energy in the water takes a massive jump, and the wind is forecast to be light and glassy. This is a serious step up and will only be for the experts. It’s a long way out, so don’t book your flights yet, but if this one holds, it could be the session of the month.
Water temps are about average for the season, so a 3/2 should do the trick.
Rusty, out.
