The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Los Locos over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the first week and a half is a bit of a write-off. We’re looking at a long, flat spell with tiny, weak waves and mostly onshore or cross-shore winds. The swell is small and the energy is low, so you’re better off leaving the board in the car. From Friday the 17th through to the 27th of July, it’s a real struggle to find anything worth paddling out for. The waves are small, the wind is messy, and the conditions are just ordinary. There’s a tiny window on Monday the 20th afternoon where the swell bumps up to 5 ft from the NNE, but with a short period of 7 seconds and moderate offshore wind, it’s still only surfable, not good. The combined energy is only 189, so there’s just not much push.
Things finally start to look up on Tuesday the 28th of July. That morning is the standout of the whole run. The swell jumps to 4 ft from the NW with a much longer period of 10 seconds, giving it some real grunt – the combined energy hits 384. The wind goes glassy, so the surface will be perfect. This is a proper groundswell, so it’ll have nice shape and long lines, but at a beach break like Los Locos, it might break a bit straight. Still, for a quiet morning, it’s the best you’ll get.
The last real highlight comes on Friday the 31st of July. The morning sees a solid 5 ft swell from the NW, with a period of 9 seconds and a combined energy of 526. That’s proper strong. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNE, keeping it clean. This is a solid, fun-sized wave, but at 5 ft, it’s getting a bit big for total beginners. The afternoon stays good with 5 ft and a gentle offshore, but the morning is the pick.
So, the call is clear: the best on offer is the glassy morning of Tuesday the 28th of July. For a bigger, more powerful option, the morning of Friday the 31st of July is your second window. The rest of the time, it’s a waiting game. Water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing wild.
Rusty.
