The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s chew the fat about what’s coming up at Los Locos.

The next 16 days start off alright, but there’s a real lull mid-week you’ll want to skip. The best windows are Saturday the 22nd and then a proper standout late in the second week on Thursday the 3rd of September. Water temp is 73°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – you’ll feel that little extra comfort while you’re paddling.

Saturday morning the 22nd is a solid go. Swell coming from the NW at 4ft, period 9 seconds, with a clean 15 km/h cross-off Easterly breeze. The combined energy is moderate at 212, and with that gentle wind and clear sky, the faces will be clean enough to have some fun. This spot is exposed to the NW, so the direction matches the guidance optimum. It’s a consistent beginner-friendly break, but be aware – crowds are often here. Saturday afternoon sees the wind pick up offshore from the ENE at 25 km/h, but the swell drops slightly to 3ft and the conditions turn poor, so don’t expect much after lunch.

Sunday morning the 23rd is glassy. Swell tiny at 2ft from the NE, only 6 seconds period, with combined energy weak at 77. It’s surfable but ordinary – you’ll be scratching for waves. Sunday afternoon bumps up to 3ft from the NNE with a light cross-off breeze, but still nothing special.

Then we hit a real dry spell. From Monday the 24th right through to Wednesday the 26th, it’s mostly flat with tiny swell under 2ft and poor conditions. The combined energy drops into the 20s and 30s. You’re better off staying on the beach with a cold one.

Thursday the 27th looks a bit rough. The swell jumps to 6–6ft from the WNW, but it’s a moderate cross-onshore wind at 20 km/h, making it choppy and poor. Combined energy hits 472 in the morning and 552 in the arvo – decent power, but the wind ruins it. Friday the 28th is similar, but then Friday afternoon the swell pumps up to 10ft from the NW with 11 seconds period. That’s huge for this break, combined energy 1994 – very strong. The wind is light cross-shore, but the comment says it’s too big for this spot. This is expert-only territory, and honestly, with that size and the cross-shore, it might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

Saturday the 29th is the real turn-around. Morning brings 5ft from the NW, 10 seconds, with a light cross-off Easterly at 5 km/h. Combined energy 930 – strong. The comment says “expect very good surf conditions.” Afternoon gets even better: 7ft NW, offshore NE breeze at 15 km/h, clean faces, combined energy 802. This is a standout morning session before the crowds build.

Sunday the 30th is glassy in the morning with 4ft NW, period 9 seconds, combined energy 306. The wind is calm – zero km/h – so it’ll be smooth as silk. Good surf, but not as punchy as Saturday. Afternoon stays clean with a light cross-off.

Then Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st of September drop back to small, ordinary surf. Swell under 4ft, weak energy. Not worth paddling out.

Now, hold onto your board – Wednesday the 2nd of September afternoon brings a nice little pulse: 4ft from the WNW, 10 seconds, light cross-off, combined energy 293. That’s clean and fun. But the real standout is Thursday the 3rd of September afternoon. Swell 8ft from the NW, period 12 seconds – that’s a long period groundswell. Combined energy 1485 – very strong. Wind is light cross-off from the north at 10 km/h, and the comment says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” At 8ft, this is too big for beginners, but for the skilled crew, it’s going to be pumping. Long period swells like this can break a bit straight on beach breaks, but here at Los Locos (exposed to NW), it should offer good shaped lines. Crowds are often, so get in early.

Friday the 4th of September still has solid 8ft NW swell but the cross-on wind kicks up, making it choppy. Saturday the 5th is even worse with rain and a fresh 35 km/h cross-on wind – lumpy, poor conditions. Sunday the 6th fades back to 5ft and choppy cross-on.

So, to sum it up: your best windows are Saturday morning the 29th of August and Thursday afternoon the 3rd of September. The 3rd is the bigger, cleaner, more powerful standout – but it’s for experienced surfers only. Get out there, Rusty.
