Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve got a look at what’s coming up for Los Locos over the next couple of weeks. It’s gonna be a real mixed bag, with plenty of flat spells and only a few moments where it’s worth paddling out. The water’s running at 71° which is more than 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s pretty notable, and it’ll feel like a bath on those glassy mornings.
Right from the start, there’s a bit of action straight away. Sunday morning, 5th July, we’ve got a small but clean 2 ft swell out of the NW with a period of 11 seconds – that’s a nice long-period groundswell. Combined swell energy is only 76 (weak), so nothing powerful, but the wind’s a gentle cross-off breeze from the ENE at 9 mph. Conditions are clean, and for a beginner-friendly spot that’s consistent, this is a decent little window. Just a heads up – crowds are often here, so expect company.
Monday morning, 6th July, is similar: 2 ft NW swell, 9-second period, light ENE cross-off wind at 6 mph. Clean again, but energy is a weak 70. It’s surfable but very ordinary – don’t get too excited.
Then we hit a real dry spell. From Tuesday 7th July right through to Saturday 11th July, it’s pretty much all poor surf conditions. Winds swing cross-onshore, mostly from the WNW or W, and swell drops to 0.7–2 ft. The energy is in the 20s and 30s – barely a ripple. Not worth the drive.
Thursday 9th July morning has a moment of glassy conditions with a 1 ft WNW swell, 10-second period, 41 energy – but still very ordinary. It’s clean, but tiny.
Sunday 12th July brings a slight lift: 2 ft NW swell, 9–10 second period, with light offshore NNE winds at 6 mph. Energy creeps up to 85 (still weak), but it’s clean and surfable. Again, very ordinary but the best we’ve seen in days.
Monday 13th July has a bigger bump – 3 ft NW swell with a short 8-second period, energy hitting 104 (moderate). But the wind’s cross-shore from the NW, and the wave comment is poor. The short period means it’ll be weak and bumpy. Same story Tuesday 14th July: 3 ft NNW swell, 7-second period, 134 energy, but clean with light NNE cross-off wind. Surfable but ordinary – the period’s too short for real quality.
Wednesday 15th July morning is glassy with a tiny 2 ft NNW swell, 6-second period, 51 energy. It’s clean, but barely rideable. Then the wind picks up and the rest of the week stays messy.
Now, here’s the standout – but it’s a painful one. Friday 17th July has a solid 5 ft NNW swell building to 6 ft NW swell by the afternoon, with a 9-second period. Combined energy jumps to 293 and then 516 – that’s strong wave energy. But the wind is cross-onshore from the WNW at 12–16 mph, and conditions are poor. For a consistent beginner setup like Los Locos, this is too big and choppy – it’s more of a kitesurfing show than a clean paddle session.
Saturday 18th July sees a peak: 6–6 ft NW swell, 9-second period, energy up to 639 – very strong. But again, cross-onshore winds ruin it. The wave comment is poor both morning and afternoon. Not for paddling.
Sunday 19th July afternoon finally improves: 3 ft NNW swell, 8-second period, light N cross-off wind at 6 mph, 141 energy (moderate). Conditions are clean and surfable – ordinary but rideable. Monday 20th July is similar: 3 ft NNW swell, 7-second period, offshore NE wind at 3–9 mph, energy around 76–79 (weak). Clean and gentle offshore, but nothing special.
Overall, the best bet is Sunday 5th July morning – it’s small and clean with that 11-second period groundswell, making it the pick for beginners and longboarders. The other window is Sunday 12th July. Everything else is either flat, choppy, or too short-period to be any fun. For a consistent spot, this is a lean run – but it won’t stay poor forever.
Rusty.
