The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s comin’ for this stretch.
We’re lookin’ at a slow start with a bit of a wait for the good stuff. The first few days are small and weak, but there’s a real pulse of energy that builds into the end of the month. The real standout is gonna be that Tuesday, July 28th, if you’ve got the skill for it.
Sunday the 19th is tiny. We’re talkin’ 1 ft from the northwest with a clean, glassy morning. It’s pretty, but there’s no push. The water’s sitting at a warm 72°, which is much warmer than we’d usually see for July – a solid 4° above normal. The combined energy is a measly 17, so it’s real weak.
Monday the 20th starts to show a little life. The morning is a bit messy with a cross-shore wind, but by the afternoon, the wind swings offshore from the northeast at 12 mph, and we get a 5 ft swell from the north-northeast. The energy jumps to 292, which is moderate. It’s not perfect, but it’s the first decent chance.
Tuesday the 21st sees the swell hold around 5 ft to 5 ft, but the wind is a bit stronger in the afternoon, hittin’ 16 mph offshore. It’s clean, but the quality is only ordinary.
Wednesday the 22nd drops back to 4 ft, with a glassy morning and clean conditions. Nothing special, but a nice paddle if you’re keen.
Then there’s a real dry spell. From Thursday the 23rd all the way through Sunday the 27th, the surf is small and poor. The energy drops into the teens and twenties, and the wind is mostly cross or cross-on. It’s a blank run of about 4 days with no real recommendations.
But hold on – Monday the 27th afternoon, things start to change. The swell jumps to 7 ft from the northwest, with a clean offshore wind from the north. The energy is a solid 470. That’s a sign of things to come.
Now, Tuesday July 28th is the big one. This is the true standout. Morning sees a 8 ft northwest groundswell with a period of 10 seconds, and the wind is offshore from the east-northeast, glassy. The combined energy is 1333 – that’s strong. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The swell direction matches the optimum northwest direction for Los Locos. By the afternoon, it swells to 10 ft from the northwest, with energy at 1758, but honestly, that’s gettin’ too big for this break. The morning is the sweet spot if you’re an expert.
Wednesday the 29th is still solid, with 8 ft to 8 ft from the northwest, clean offshore winds, and energy over 1200. The tide and wind might make it a bit tricky, but it’s still a big day.
Thursday the 30th backs off to a more manageable 5 ft from the north-northwest, with clean, moderate offshore winds. Energy is 270. A good follow-up day for a wider range of surfers.
Things taper off into the first week of August. Friday the 31st has a nice glassy morning with 3 ft from the north-northwest and a 10-second period, but the afternoon gets chopped up. Saturday and Sunday, August 1st and 2nd, are blown out with cross-on winds. The energy sits around 200-300, but the wind kills it.
Monday August 3rd finishes with a flat, glassy morning and tiny 2 ft waves. A quiet end to the run.
So, the best bet is Tuesday morning July 28th for the big, clean, expert-only northwest swell. If you’re not ready for that, Monday afternoon July 27th or Thursday July 30th are your best more manageable options.
Stay salty.
Rusty.
