Table - best surf conditions forecast for Playa de Barrika over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you—this 16-day window for Playa de Barrika is a tough one. The finder shows zero recommendations the whole way through, which is a real bummer, but given this spot is a sheltered, inconsistent reef that rarely fires, a blank run like this isn’t totally out of the ordinary. Still, forecasts can change, so don’t write it off completely.
Let’s run through what’s happening. The first stretch from Thursday 9 July through to Saturday 19 July is all tiny, weak swell—mostly 0.7 ft to 2 ft—with combined energy readings stuck under 100 (like 76 down to 6), meaning the ocean is flat and lifeless. Winds are a mix, but mostly light and cross-off or glassy at times, so it’s clean, but there’s nothing to ride. The water temperature is 74°F with a 6°F anomaly—that’s much warmer than usual for this time of year, so if you’re just having a swim, it’s pretty nice.
Now, the second week shows a slight pulse. Sunday 19 July afternoon finally sees a 3 ft NW swell with 7-second period, combined energy hitting 154—moderate. Winds are NNE at 15 mph, cross-off, so it’s clean. The commentary says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” which is the best we get. It’s nothing special, but if you’re desperate, you could get a few.
The standout—if you can call it that—is Wednesday 22 July afternoon. Swell builds to 5 ft from the NW, period 7 seconds, combined energy 262 (moderate). Winds are N at 15 mph, cross-off, making it clean. Swell size is over 5 ft, so it’s pushing into intermediate territory, and with that short period, it’ll be a bit bumpy. It’s the biggest energy of the whole outlook, but still “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.”
Thursday 24 July morning sees the biggest swell at 6 ft from the NW, 8-second period, combined energy 423 (strong). Problem is, winds are WNW at 10 mph, cross-on, so it’ll be choppy and messy. That’s over 5 ft, so not for beginners, but with the cross-on wind, it’s not ideal for anyone.
Bottom line: there’s no true good surf here. The best bet is the afternoon of 22 July or the morning of 24 July if you’re desperate, but keep expectations low. This is a spot that doesn’t do well without a proper swell, and we just don’t have one.
Rusty.
