The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be real – the next two weeks at Menakoz are a bummer. There’s a long stretch of flatness with barely anything to paddle for. The first bit of surf worth mentioning doesn’t come until mid-July, and even then it’s a struggle.
Starting from Wednesday 15 July, there’s nothing – just 0.7ft of slop from the WNW at 9 seconds, and the combined swell energy is a weak 21. Wind is onshore from the NNW at 9 mph, so no chance of clean waves. The water is sitting at 74°, which is a massive 6° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s really unusual, like a summer hangover in the middle of winter.
Thursday 16 July morning goes glassy with the wind dropping to 3 mph from the N, but the swell is still tiny at 2ft and a period of just 5 seconds. Energy is 19 – basically nothing. By afternoon, the onshore NW wind picks up to 9 mph, and it’s back to poor surf. Friday 17 July stays poor with a cross-on breeze and waves around 2ft but short period, energy only 18-20. Saturday 18 July starts glassy with zero wind, but the swell is pitiful at 1ft and no energy (14). Sunday 19 July you get a glassy morning with a 1ft, 10-second swell – energy 31 – but it’s still too small to call surf. That pattern of tiny, weak, and mostly onshore or cross-on continues right through until the end of the month.
The one slight pulse comes around Monday 20 July when the swell lifts to 3ft from the NNE with a 6-second period. Combined energy hits 109 (moderate), but the wind is cross-on from the N at 6 mph, and the wave comment is still “poor surf conditions.” Tuesday 21 July sees a similar 3-4ft NNE swell with energy around 101-102, but again cross-onshore winds and short period mean it’s messy and uninviting. Wednesday 22 July through Thursday 23 July drop back to 2-4ft, but the wind stays on or cross-on, and the energy fades.
From Friday 24 July onward, it’s a real drag – 0.7ft to 2ft, with periods that jump to 12 seconds on Saturday 25 July but only 0.7-1ft of swell, so that’s just a long-period slosh. The energy is 34-36, which is weak. Wind stays mostly cross-on or onshore, and the glassy mornings on Sunday 26 July, Monday 27 July, and Tuesday 29 July at best give you a 1-2ft wave with a 6-11 second period, but the energy is low (24-45). The whole period is a blank – no standout days, no decent surf. The last day, Thursday 30 July, offers a 1ft NW swell with 9 seconds, glassy morning, but energy is only 40. It’s not worth the drive.
If you’re desperate, the best you’ll get is those glassy mornings on 19 July, 27 July, or 29 July with a tiny 1-2ft wave, but it’s barely a knee-high dribble. Honestly, the setup here looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer when the wind picks up, but for us surfers, it’s a long wait. Things can change, but right now, this is a drought.
Rusty.
