The Lowdown
Second Text (Imperial)
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag for this zone. We’re looking at a setup that’s gonna need some patience, but there are a few windows where you might get a decent paddle.
Right now, Wednesday morning the 19th, we’ve got tiny 1ft surf from the NNW with glassy conditions. The water’s sitting at a very unusual 75°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – feels like the tropics, but there’s zero energy (12). It’s a paddle, not a surf.
We hit a real dry spell from here. There’s nothing worth recommending until we get past the weekend. You’ll see some messy 4ft to 6ft swell on Thursday and Friday, but it’s all cross-onshore with a moderate breeze, making for choppy, poor conditions. The 6ft on Friday morning comes with moderate wave energy (580), but that wind is a killer.
Saturday and Sunday drop right off, back to tiny 2ft to 3ft stuff with cross-shore winds. You might find a clean window Sunday morning with a light cross-offshore, but it’s barely a knee-high dribble. Then Monday the 24th gets a weird pulse – the afternoon brings a sudden 8ft from the WNW, but it’s straight onshore with a period of only 6 seconds. That’s a close-out shorebreak with no shape, and the energy is moderate (544). Not for a paddle.
Now, Tuesday the 25th morning is where we get a tiny bit of life. There’s a clean 4ft from the NNW, light cross-offshore breeze, and a period of just 7 seconds. The energy is still low-moderate (197), and the conditions are only surfable but very ordinary. Still, it’s the first thing with a pulse in a week.
The real standout, if you can wait, is Friday the 28th of August. That morning is your best bet. We get a clean 5ft from the NW (optimum direction), with a solid 10-second period and a light cross-offshore breeze from the SE. The combined energy is strong at 549. The wind will clean it up nicely. For a sharp reef like Menakoz, that longer-period NW groundswell is what you want – it’ll wrap in with some proper push and shape. Just be aware, the crowds here are often, so expect company on a Friday.
After that, we get another lull. The following week is more of the same – small and ordinary, with a couple of glassy dawnies on the 2nd of September bringing a solid 7ft from the NW, but the wind switches onshore by the afternoon. That’s a big, powerful swell (energy 542), but it’s only for experts if you catch it glassy in the morning, as 6ft at a reef can get serious fast.
Last thing to keep an eye on is Monday the 31st of August. A huge 10ft NW groundswell rolls in overnight with an 11-second period and a huge energy rating of 1733. That’s a full-scale event. The wind is light and cross-shore in the morning, which is about as good as it gets for a 10ft day, but make no mistake – that is expert territory only. The power will be intimidating, and it might be better for kites if it gets choppy.
That’s the story, boys and girls. Hold out for that Friday the 28th morning. It’s the cleanest, most user-friendly wave of the whole outlook.
Rusty.
