The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's check out what's shaking at Playa de Laga. We've got a real mixed bag ahead, with a long stretch of weak, crappy surf before a couple of cleaner windows show up further down the line.
The water temp is about normal for this time of year, so nothing wild to worry about there.
The first part of the forecast is a total bummer. From Thursday the 20th right through to Wednesday the 26th of August, it's mostly small, messy, and blown out. The swell energy is pretty weak, with values ranging from just 3 to 76 (that's low energy). The wind is onshore or cross-onshore for most of it, creating choppy conditions. There's a brief moment on Saturday morning the 22nd with a clean 4ft NW swell from a cross-offshore breeze, but it's short-lived. Honestly, for the first week, you're better off waxing your board at home and waiting.
Now, Thursday the 27th of August gets interesting, but not for the right reasons. We've got a big jump in energy to 496, with a 6ft WNW swell, but it's a fresh cross-onshore wind making it lumpy. Not good. The afternoon gets even bigger, with a 10ft WNW swell and energy hitting 1176 (strong energy). That's expert-only territory, and with a moderate cross-onshore wind, it's going to be a wild, ugly beast. This looks more like a day for the kite surfers than a clean paddle session.
The real standout, the one you've been waiting for, is Sunday the 30th of August. The morning session is the pick of the whole forecast. We've got a clean 5ft NW swell with a 9-second period, and the wind is a light offshore from the SE. That's the magic word: offshore. The energy is a decent 343 (moderate), and the conditions are expected to be good. This is a solid, clean option for intermediate and above surfers.
Monday the 31st of August morning also looks tidy, with a clean 5ft NW swell and a light cross-offshore breeze from the east. The energy is a bit lower at 291, but it's still a clean, surfable wave.
Looking further out, Thursday the 3rd of September morning is promising. The forecast shows a nice 6ft NW swell with a 10-second period and a clean cross-offshore wind from the east. The energy is solid at 687. This one is a bit far out, so keep an eye on it, but it's a promising, cleaner option.
The rest of the second week is a mix of marginal and poor conditions, with onshore winds and choppy seas. The only other clean window is that Sunday morning, which is really the one to target.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a write-off. The standout is the morning of Sunday the 30th of August, with a clean, offshore swell. Monday the 31st is a good backup. The morning of Thursday the 3rd of September is worth watching, but it's a long-range call.
Rusty, signing off.
