Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Orrua.

Straight up, the next week and a half is looking pretty grim, with barely a ripple. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak, and messy waves coming, so don't get your hopes up. The first real glimmer of anything surfable shows up on Monday morning, 13 July, but it’s still ordinary. The real story is waiting for the second week, where we finally see some life.

The standout session is Saturday morning, 25 July. That’s the one to circle. We’ve got a solid 8ft NW swell rolling in, with a period of 9 seconds and combined energy of 813 – that’s strong and punchy. The water is 76°, which is 8° warmer than usual for this time of year, so that's very unusual. However, the wind is cross-onshore from the WNW at 12 mph, so it’s going to be a bit choppy. This is a heavy, expert-only reef break, and with that size, it’s only for the experienced. Crowds are often an issue here, so expect company.

If you’re looking for something cleaner, Sunday morning, 26 July, could be a better but smaller option. The swell drops to 5ft from the NW, with a long 10-second period and 475 energy. The wind is light cross-shore from the ENE at 3 mph, making for much cleaner conditions. Still a decent wave, but not as powerful as the day before.

The rest of the 16 days is mostly small, weak, and onshore junk. There’s a few glassy moments here and there, like Thursday morning, 24 July, but the swell is tiny at 2ft. Not worth paddling out for.

So, for the brave, the 25th is the big one, but expect a battle with the wind and the crowd. The 26th is the smarter, cleaner call. The long gap before that is a write-off.

Rusty.
