Table - best surf conditions forecast for Orrua over the next 16 days.
Righto, grab a coffee, this is a long one. Let's get into it.
That's a slow start for a while, if you're keen on a paddle this week. The surf is tiny and the conditions are just ordinary. For the first week, you're looking at a bit of a flat spell, honestly.
Sunday morning the 12th is the first sniff, but it's a 2ft WNW swell with a period of 10 seconds. It's clean with a gentle offshore SSE breeze, but it's small, and the combined swell energy is weak (66). Monday morning looks a touch better with a 4ft NW swell and glassy conditions, period is short though at 7 seconds. That's about it for that first block – it's pretty much a write-off until the 20th.
Then it starts to get interesting. The standout window kicks off on Monday the 20th. The morning is a bit of a write-off with a 6ft NW swell and a light cross-onshore, but the afternoon is where it fires up. You've got a 7ft NW groundswell, period of 7 seconds, and it's glassy with a light northerly breeze. The combined wave energy jumps to a moderate 437. Orrua is a reef break, and it's an expert-only wave, so don't even think about it if you're not solid.
The real highlight, though, is Tuesday the 21st. This is the day. A solid 10ft NW swell with a period of 9 seconds, and clean cross-offshore winds from the SE and ESE. The combined energy is a massive 1370 – that's strong, powerful stuff. This is excellent surf, but only for experienced surfers. The swell is big, so it's not a beginner wave. Being a reef break, this long-period groundswell will set up some proper lines.
Wednesday the 22nd is still good, with a 7ft NW swell and clean offshore SSE winds in the morning, though the energy drops a bit (816). Thursday the 23rd is worth a look in the morning – a 5ft NW swell with glassy conditions from an east breeze (combined energy 244). After that, it starts to fade back down into late July with smaller, less organised swell and choppy conditions.
So, if you're an expert, you only have one real target: Orrua. Don't waste your time before the 20th. The crowds can be an issue here, so keep that in mind. Water temp is about average for the time of year.
