The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let me tell you what I'm seeing in the local crystal ball for Orrua.

This is a solid two-week window for the crew who know this spot. Orrua is an expert-level reef break, and it’s exposed to the NW, which is exactly what the forecast is feeding us. It’s fairly consistent, but you’ll want to pick your moments because the crowds can be a factor when it’s good.

The first few days are a write-off. Wednesday the 27th and Thursday the 28th have weak, messy energy and onshore winds. Not worth the paddle. You’re waiting for Saturday the 29th. That morning the wind goes glassy, the combined energy jumps to a solid 418 (moderate) and we’ve got a clean 5 ft NW swell on offer. That is your first proper stand-out. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so a 3/2 is fine.

Sunday the 30th morning is also glassy with 5 ft NW, energy at 316 – clean, fun, but not the top pick. Monday the 31st gets messy with rain and onshore slop. Skip it.

Tuesday the 1st of September morning brings another nice window. Glassy conditions again, 4 ft from the WNW, combined energy at 261. It’s clean and workable, but the real highlight is shaping up for further out.

Keep your eye on Tuesday the 8th of September. That morning is a beauty. The wind is dead calm, glassy as a mirror, with 5 ft of NW groundswell and energy reading a strong 509. That’s the best call of the forecast. It’s still two weeks away, so treat it with a little patience, but the signals are strong. The period is 10 seconds, so it’ll have some punch and shape on that reef. The following morning, Wednesday the 9th, is also glassy with 5 ft NW swell and energy of 440 – a worthy backup if you miss the main day.

Thursday the 10th morning is another glassy one with 6 ft NW and a hefty 680 energy reading. That’s expert territory for sure – grunty waves on a shallow reef. Not for the faint-hearted.

The biggest gap in the action is the first two days. After that, it’s a steady run of glassy mornings with clean, pushy swell. If you can only surf one session, aim for the morning of the 8th of September. That’s the one.

Stay sharp.
