Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for the local stretch. Gotta be straight with you – this outlook is mostly a waiting game. There’s one morning that’s got a bit of magic, but for the most part, we’re in a flat spell with a lot of ordinary days. We’re looking at nearly two weeks here, and you’ll be scratching for waves most of the time.
The first real chance to get wet is Saturday morning, July 4th at Zurriola hondartza. That morning is the standout – no doubt. We’ve got a clean 4ft NW swell rolling in with a 10-second period, and the wind is dead glassy from the north at just 3 mph. The water is about average for the time of year. The combined energy is sitting at a moderate 220, so there’s some punch there. It’s an exposed beach break, and with those conditions, it’s going to be clean, fun, and pretty user-friendly for intermediates. Crowds could show up though – it’s a popular spot. If you can get out Saturday morning, that’s your window. Come Saturday afternoon, the wind swings onshore and it’s game over.
After that, we hit a long, dry spell. From Saturday afternoon, July 4th all the way through to Saturday morning, July 11th, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. Tiny waves, poor wind, and mostly cross-onshore slop. The swell energy drops right off into double digits – barely any life in the water.
Sunday morning, July 12th brings a little pulse: 3ft NW swell at a short 7-second period. Winds go glassy again, so it’ll look pretty on the surface, but the energy is weak (96). That’s a “maybe” session if you’re really jonesing – mostly small and a bit gutless.
Then another few days of nothing until Monday morning, July 13th. That morning the swell bumps up to 5ft from the NW with a 9-second period and a solid moderate energy reading of 287. But the wind is cross-onshore from the west at 6 mph, so it’s gonna be bumpy and messy. For a beach break, that setup is more likely to be good for kite surfing than paddle surfing, to be honest.
We see another glassy moment on Wednesday morning, July 15th with 3ft NW groundswell (8-second period). Energy is moderate at 136, and with no wind, it’ll be clean – but again, it’s small. A board with extra foam could get you into a few.
Thursday morning, July 16th and Friday morning, July 17th are both glassy but tiny – 1ft and 3ft respectively, with shaky periods. The 3ft on the 17th is from the WNW with only a 6-second period – that’s short-period windswell, so it’ll be lumpy and weak.
Sunday morning, July 19th closes the run with 5ft WNW swell but a 6-second period and cross-on wind. The energy is moderate at 150, but the wind kills it.
So there you have it. Saturday morning, July 4th is your one true standout. After that, it’s a whole lot of flat and ordinary. Forecasts can change though, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
