The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s see what’s happening in the water.
The first few days are slow. Tuesday morning, 18th August, we’ve got a tiny little knee-high swell at Zurriola hondartza, with glassy wind, but it’s just too small to bother with. The energy is weak (40). The water is 25°, which is a few degrees warmer than usual for this time of year – a nice bonus.
The real standout is Thursday morning, 20th August. That’s the one. We’ve got a clean 4ft NW groundswell with a long 11-second period, pushing moderate energy (304). The wind is dead calm – glassy as it gets. The waves will have shape and power. Like any good spot, it can get crowded sometimes, so get there early. This is the best session of the forecast.
Friday morning, 21st August, the swell bumps up to 5ft from the NW, but the wind goes cross-shore, making it a bit messy. The energy is moderate (484), but it’s not clean. You can still get some, but it’s not the star.
Saturday morning, 22nd August, the swell drops back to 4ft from the NW, and the wind turns light cross-offshore, cleaning it up. Energy is moderate (235). A good session, but not as good as Thursday.
After that, it’s mostly small and weak for the next week. A few glassy mornings pop up, like Sunday 23rd and Monday 24th, but the waves are tiny – under 3ft – with short periods. More of a longboard or a float.
Then on Thursday 27th August, we get a big pulse. The swell jumps to 8ft from the WNW, with strong energy (1184). But the wind is screaming from the SW at 30 km/h, cross-offshore, so it’s going to be a rough paddle. The period is 9 seconds, so it’s not clean groundswell. This one is for experts only – too big and gnarly for anyone else.
The following Saturday morning, 29th August, offers another clean window with 4ft WNW swell, light winds, and glassy conditions. Energy is moderate (211). A good morning, but not a standout.
The last few days into September fizzle out with small, weak, and onshore wind. Not much to chase.
So, bottom line: Thursday 20th August morning is your gold star. Glassy, clean, waist-to-chest high NW swell with good energy. Saturday 22nd morning is a solid backup. Thursday 27th August is big and raw, but only for the brave.
Rusty out.
