Right then, let's have a look at what's coming up over the next couple of weeks. To be straight with you, it’s a pretty quiet picture for the most part. The first real pulse of any interest doesn't show up until late in the week, and even then, it’s nothing to get the heart racing. We've got a long gap ahead so don't get your hopes up too early.
The first surfable moment turns up on Thursday afternoon, July 2nd, at Zurriola hondartza. We're looking at a 4ft swell from the NW, but the wind is howling onshore from the NW at 9 mph. That’s a recipe for poor conditions. The water is sitting at a very unusual 75°, which is a lot warmer than normal for this time of year, but that won't help the mess out there.
Friday morning, July 3rd, drops right down to a tiny 2ft NW swell with a long 12-second period. The wind is cross-onshore from the WNW at 6 mph, and the whole thing is just marginal. Friday afternoon sees a bit more size at 4ft again, but that NW wind is back onshore. No good.
Saturday, July 4th, is a similar story. Morning has a 4ft NW swell with light cross-onshore wind from the N at 3 mph, which cleans it up a tiny bit, but it's still marginal. Afternoon drops to 3ft with onshore wind. Same old.
By Sunday, July 5th, we're down to 2ft NW swells. The wind is light cross-onshore, but it’s just too small.
Monday, July 6th, is even worse, with 2ft surf. The wind is cross-shore from the ENE at 3 mph, but there’s just no power.
Now, a little glimmer pops up on Tuesday morning, July 7th. It's only 2ft from the NW, but the wind goes glassy. Dead calm from the NNE at 3 mph. That's the cleanest the water will be all week, but the waves are absolutely tiny and ordinary.
We then hit another flat spell right through to Thursday, July 9th. Nothing but small, weak, and messy waves.
Friday morning, July 10th, brings another glassy window. A 3ft NW swell with zero wind from the NNE. It's surfable but very ordinary. Afternoon the wind swings onshore and ruins it.
Saturday, July 11th, sees the swell hold at 3ft from the NW, but the period stretches to a long 12 seconds. The wind is onshore from the NNW and NW at 6 mph. It’s a better quality swell, a bit of a groundswell, but the wind keeps it marginal.
After that, it's back to a long stretch of poor surf. Waves stay below 2ft, the wind is often onshore or cross-onshore. Tuesday, July 14th, through Thursday, July 16th, offers nothing worth paddling out for, despite a few glassy mornings on the 16th with a tiny 2ft NW windswell of short period (7 seconds).
Honestly, if I had to pick the one window that's least terrible, it'd be the glassy morning of Tuesday, July 7th, or the similar one on Friday, July 10th, for the cleanest surface. But neither has any real push. The longer-period, slightly bigger swell on Saturday, July 11th, has the most potential if the wind had been offshore, but it's not. For now, this is a week for checking your gear and waiting for a better run. The forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it, but right now, it's a tough stretch.
