The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty, and I've been staring at the charts for your area. It's a bit of a slow burner, so don't expect much action early on.
We kick off Sunday, the 23rd of August with tiny, weak surf. The swell at Zarautz is a paltry 2ft at 7 seconds from the NNW, and while the wind is a light cross-off, the water is an unusual 76°, a full 5° warmer than normal for this time of year. It's not really worth getting wet for – just a bit of a splash.
Monday and Tuesday are a write-off. Swell drops right away, with heights under a foot and a half. There's a very long gap with no real surf recommendations until we get a proper pulse. You've got a few days there with nothing to ride.
Wednesday the 27th shows the first sign of life. Thursday morning sees a jump in size to 5ft from the WNW, but at 8 seconds it's short-period wind swell. It's clean with a cross-off breeze, so it's "expect good surf conditions" – a decent enough option to get a few grovelly ones if you're keen.
Now, here's the standout if you've got the skills. Friday the 28th of August is for experienced surfers only. A very strong, long-period groundswell arrives from the WNW, with 12ft of swell at 12 seconds. The morning glass is perfect for it. However, this swell size is over 8ft, so this is strictly for the big-wave chargers. It's going to be a beast, and with that long period, it might be a bit top-to-bottom at a beach break, but it'll be an incredible day for anyone who can handle it.
After that big pulse, things settle back down. Saturday the 29th is your best bet for the weekend. The morning glass is dead calm, with 6ft of clean, 10-second NW swell. It's "expect very good surf conditions" – solid and clean. Good for a wide range of surfers, just watch out as crowds are likely here.
Sunday the 30th is also a good session with 5ft, 9-second NW swell and glassy conditions again, but it's a step down in power.
The first week of September looks pretty quiet with small, inconsistent waves under 3ft. It's not completely flat, but it's not worth writing home about.
Looking further out, there's another pulse building for the 7th of September. Monday the 7th shows a strong 8ft groundswell from the NW at 12 seconds, but the conditions are marred by a light cross-shore wind and a "marginal" chance of it coming together. This is a promising long-range call, but it's two weeks out, so keep an eye on it. It could be the next real highlight.
Signing off,
Rusty
