The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let's look at what's cooking for Zarautz over the next couple weeks.
First thing you gotta know: the water is sitting at about 76° – that’s much warmer than usual for this time of year, a real treat.
Right now, we’re looking at a bit of a flat spell. There’s nothing worth paddling out for until we get to the morning of Saturday, August 22nd. Even then, it’s small – around 4 ft of NW swell with a period of 9 seconds and light cross-shore wind. But the energy is weak (208), and the report is calling it marginal. Not the start we want.
Sunday, the 23rd, is even smaller. Morning has 2 ft from the NNW with a 7-second period. Too weak to get excited about. The week that follows is pretty dead – tiny swells and onshore winds. From the 24th through the 26th, you’re looking at knee-high slop. We’re talking wave energy as low as 10 – barely a ripple.
Then things finally start to look up. On the morning of Thursday, August 27th, we get a pulse of 5 ft from the WNW with a 9-second period. The wind is cross-offshore from the SSW, which should keep the face clean. The combined energy jumps to 339 (moderate energy). This is the first proper session of the outlook.
Now, the standout. The morning of Friday, August 28th. This is a big one – solid 12 ft groundswell from the WNW, with a long 11-second period. The energy is massive (2546). Wind is light and variable, promising clean conditions. But here’s the catch – at over 8 ft, this is expert territory only. It will be too big and powerful for beginners. For the crew with the right skills, this is the best on offer, no question.
The Saturday morning after that, the 29th, still has size, 6 ft from the NW, but the wind goes cross-shore, so it won't be as clean. The week that follows, from August 30th through September 4th, settles back down to small, manageable waves – around 2 ft to 4 ft – with glassy mornings on the 2nd and 3rd of September. Good for a longboard or a quiet learner session.
The final highlight to keep an eye on is the morning of Sunday, September 6th. We see a 4 ft NW groundswell with an 11-second period, cross-offshore wind from the WSW, and moderate energy (455). It’s a solid, clean option for the start of September, but it’s a long way out, so keep your fingers crossed.
All in all, the real window to charge is the 27th through the 29th of August, with Friday the 28th being the peak beast. Before that, a long flat spell. After that, small and mostly average.
Rusty.
