The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a brutal start. We’re looking at a long stretch of flat to tiny, messy conditions. The first real chance of anything worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Thursday the 23rd of July, and even then it’s only just barely surfable. That’s a solid 8-day gap with no proper recommendations.
Zarautz is the only game in town, and for most of the forecast it’s nothing to write home about. The water temp is sitting at a whopping 77°, which is a massive 9° warmer than usual for this time of year – you’ll be shedding the wetsuit, that’s for sure.
The first whisper of life comes on Thursday the 23rd, with a glassy morning and a 3 ft swell from the WNW. The energy is weak (73), and the waves are just “surfable but very ordinary.” It’s a beginner-friendly size, so if you’re just aching to get wet, you could get a few knee-high wobblers. But don’t expect any fireworks.
That small window of mediocrity continues into Friday the 24th, but the wind swings cross-onshore, ruining the surface. The best of the whole run actually looks like it might be Monday the 27th. We’ve got a glassy morning again, with a 3 ft swell from the NNW. The period is a modest 7 seconds, so it’s a bit weak, but with the clean conditions and light wind, you might find a few clean little peaks. The energy is still low (72), so it’s a small-wave day for the longboard or a foamie.
For the absolute standout, you have to look at Saturday the 25th of July. The swell jumps up to 7 ft from the WNW, with a moderate energy level (302). That’s a proper size, but there’s a catch. The wind is a moderate cross-onshore breeze from the NW at 16 mph, making it choppy and messy. This is a day for experts only, and honestly, with that wind and the beach break setup, it looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The conditions are just too rough to enjoy that bigger swell.
So, the bottom line: don’t hold your breath for the first week. The 27th gives you a glimmer of hope for a clean, small session, and the 25th offers some size but with a lot of wind. It’s a tough outlook.
Rusty.
