Right then, let me take a look at what's on the table for you lot here in San Sebastián. The spot on the cards is Playa de Gros.
Alright, straight up, I gotta be honest with you. Looking over the next 16 days, it’s a bit of a struggle. This isn't a flyer; I'm calling it as I see it. The surf is there, but the quality just isn't cooperating for most of the run. The water’s sitting at a very unusual 75° right now, which is much warmer than normal for the time of year – a solid 8° above average. That’s a weird one.
The first real blip on the radar comes up on Monday, 6th July. It’s small, with a weak combined swell energy of 73, pushing in a 2 ft swell from the NW with a 9-second period. Still, it’s clean on the morning with a light cross-offshore breeze from the ENE. That’s your best bet early on, but it’s honestly just surfable, nothing to write home about. The wave comment itself says "very ordinary conditions."
The next one to keep an eye on is Tuesday, 7th July. The swell has dropped to a tiny 2 ft from the NW, but the wind goes glassy in the morning from the NNE. The energy is only 51. You might get a few, but it's going to be a long wait between sets and the waves will lack any real push.
You get a brief uptick in energy on Thursday, 10th July, morning. The swell bumps up to 3 ft from the NW (9-second period) with a combined energy of 111, and it’s glassy again with a NNE breeze. Still, the file tells me it's "very ordinary conditions." It’s just about the cleanest you'll get for that size.
Then Saturday, 11th July offers the biggest energy of the whole outlook. We’ve got a 3 ft NW groundswell with a 12-second period, pushing the combined energy to 265. That long period will give it some shape, but it’s a bit gutting because the wind is straight onshore from the NNW. That’s going to spoil it, leaving it marginal at best.
After that, it’s a long, flat dribble for the rest of the run. From around the 12th of July all the way to the 17th, the swells are tiny—between 1 ft and 2 ft—and the conditions are mostly poor. There's a brief moment on Thursday, 16th July morning with a glassy 2 ft NW swell, but it’s weak (energy 80) and the period is a short 7 seconds. It’s the last gasp before a proper drop-off.
So, what’s the standout? Honestly, there isn’t a true barnstormer in this batch. If you’re desperate, the Monday morning, 6th July with the clean cross-offshore wind is probably the most user-friendly. But for a bit more energy and that longer period, keep an eye on the Saturday, 11th July morning. Just be prepared for the bumpy onshore wind. The long period is better for a point break, but at a beach break like Gros, it can make the waves break a bit too straight.
The frustrating bit is the surf is just never clean enough to match the energy that does show up. For a beginner, anything over 5 ft is a handful, and while most of this is smaller, the poor conditions make it a slog.
Look, there's not a lot to get excited about here. It’s one of those periods where the ocean just can’t get its act together. Don't give up hope though; forecasts can change.
