Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for our local stretch.
Right off the bat, the next week or so isn’t going to have us frothing. The surf is small and pretty ordinary, but there are a few windows where it cleans right up. The real story is the total energy dump we get further out – we’re talking a serious pulse of swell late in the second week that, if the wind plays nice, could be the main event. For now, we’re playing the waiting game.
We’re looking at Playa de Gros. To kick things off, the water is a balmy 75°, which is 7° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, so you can leave the thick steamer at home.
Monday morning (6 July) is the first call. We’ve only got a tiny 2ft swell from the NW, with a 9-second period. The energy is weak (63 combined). But the wind is a light cross-offshore from the ENE at 3 mph, making it clean. It’s surfable, but pretty weak. Not a standout, just a chance to get wet.
Tuesday morning (7 July) is actually the pick of this first week. The swell drops a touch to 2ft from the NW, still short period at 8 seconds, and the energy is low (40). But the wind goes glassy – dead calm from the NE at 3 mph. That’s a major positive. For a beginner-friendly spot, that is as good as it gets for these tiny conditions. It’s clean as a whistle. Crowds are often an issue here, so expect company.
Wednesday (8 July) and Thursday (9 July) morning sessions both see glassy conditions again with tiny 0.7ft to 2ft surf, but the wind is light off the land. It’s clean, but very small.
Saturday morning (11 July) things nudge up a notch. We get 2ft from the WNW with an 8-second period. The energy climbs into the moderate range (101 combined). Glassy conditions from the NE at 3 mph. That’s a solid little clean session for the beginners.
Monday morning (13 July) is the first real change. The swell bumps up to 4ft from the NW, period still 9 seconds, and the energy is now 193 – moderate. Glassy, clear skies. This is the best wave size we’ve seen so far, and with that morning glass, it’s a genuine option.
Now, we hit a dead zone. From Tuesday (14 July) through Thursday (16 July), the swell drops to barely a ripple (1ft). Not worth suiting up.
Friday (17 July) sees a messy 4ft pulse from the NW in the afternoon, but the wind is onshore from the NW at 9 mph, so it’s blown out. Skip it.
Here is where things get interesting for the bold. The weekend of Saturday 18 July and Sunday 19 July sees a big, raw swell. Saturday has 3ft to 4ft from the WNW, but with fresh onshore winds (19 mph from the W and WNW), it’s going to be a lumpy, choppy mess. Not for paddling.
But Sunday (19 July) is the real beast. The swell pumps up to 8ft to 8ft from the NW, with a short 7-8 second period. The energy is very strong (569 to 692 combined). This is expert territory only – over 8ft it’s too big for most, and with the onshore wind howling at 12 mph from the NW, the quality will be poor. This is honestly looking more like a kite-surfing day than a paddle session down at the beach.
Monday morning (20 July) the swell stays solid at 6ft from the NW, still onshore wind (12 mph from NW). Energy is 373. Still messy and big.
Tuesday (21 July) the swell subsides back to 3ft from the NW, finishing the run. The best bet for decent surf in this whole 16-day window remains Monday morning (13 July) with that 4ft of clean, glassy NW swell for the more experienced beginners. The real standout for size is Sunday the 19th, but only for experts who don’t mind brutal onshore wind. Keep an eye on the long-range models for that one – it’s promising but far out.
Stay safe out there.
Rusty.
