The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a window. Monday morning, July 27th, is the standout of the whole 16-day run. Playa de Ondarreta - Pikua is our only option, and it’s a point break that’s inconsistent, so it doesn’t break often, but when it does... Monday morning kicks off with a clean 4ft NW groundswell at a very long 11-second period. The wave energy is solid, sitting at 546 (moderate energy), and the wind is glassy out of the NW at just 3 mph. That’s about as clean as it gets. The water is a very unusual 76°, which is a whopping 6° warmer than normal for this time of year. This spot is sheltered, so it’s soaking up that NW swell just right. Crowds are likely here, as it’s often busy, but for that session, it’s worth it.
After that, the wheels fall off. Monday afternoon the wind swings onshore, and the surf quality tanks. We go through a long, dry spell. There is a small window on Wednesday morning, July 29th, with a glassy 3ft NW swell, but at only 9 seconds and 141 energy (weak to moderate), it’s just surfable, nothing special. Everything else for the rest of the first week and into the second is a mix of onshore winds, choppy conditions, and tiny, weak swell. From Thursday, July 30th, right through to Saturday, August 8th, it’s all poor surf. The swell drops to below 2ft, periods are short, and the wind is never really on our side.
Even into the second week, the 9th of August sees a bit more push with 4ft NW swell at 9 seconds, but it’s paired with rain showers and moderate onshore winds, so it’s messy. The 10th and 11th are similar stories with onshore winds and chop. There’s no real quality here.
So, the honest truth? The only true standout is Monday morning, July 27th. Get out there early if you can. After that, it’s a long 10-day stretch of nothing worth paddling for. The surf stays poor, and the occasional knee-high bump isn’t going to save it. It’s a tough outlook for the area.
Rusty.
