The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for our local stretch. Let’s get real about what’s coming.
Right now, the window is looking pretty bleak for a while. The first real chance to get wet comes on Monday the 27th of July at Playa de Ondarreta - Pikua. Out of the entire 16-day run, that Monday morning is really the only standout, and it’s still not perfect. The water is sitting at 77°F and that’s a massive 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s a proper anomaly – you’ll feel like you’re surfing in a bath.
For Monday morning, the swell is a solid 4ft from the NW, with a period of 11 seconds. That’s a nice long-period groundswell, so it’ll have some punch and shape, but at a point break like this, it’ll be a bit more lined-up than a beach break. The combined energy is moderate at 546, so there’s plenty of push. The wind is glassy, coming from the NW at just 3 mph, which is a major positive – the surface will be clean as a whistle. The caveat is that this spot is an inconsistent breaker, so don’t count on it just turning on. It’s a sheltered spot, and the optimum swell direction is NW, so this is a direct hit. But the crowds are marked as "often," so expect company if it’s working.
The rest of the week from Monday afternoon onward through to the 8th of August is a write-off. We’re looking at weak, short-period dribble, with heights dropping down to 1ft and energy levels as low as 14. The wind is mostly cross-shore or onshore, and the conditions are just poor. There’s a massive gap of surfable days in there.
The next little flicker of hope arrives on Sunday the 9th of August. Again, it’s Playa de Ondarreta - Pikua, and the morning has a 4ft NW swell, period of 10 seconds, and glassy winds. Energy is back up to 369. But it’s still surfable but ordinary, and the afternoon turns to junk with cross-on wind. The following Monday the 10th sees a slightly bigger 5ft swell, but with a period of 9 seconds and cross-shore wind, it’s not going to be a fun paddle. That 5ft is edging into the size that’s better for experienced surfers, but the wind won’t do it any favours. After that, it’s back to small, weak slop right through to the end of the forecast.
So, the honest truth is this: the only real window to get a proper wave is Monday morning, the 27th of July. It’s not a guaranteed classic, but with the glassy conditions and that NW groundswell, it’s your best bet. Everything else in the 16-day window is a write-off. Don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
