The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's going on at Playa de Ondarreta - Pikua. This spot is a sheltered point, which is good because it needs all the help it can get. It’s inconsistent, so when it's flat, it's flat.
Right now, we're looking at a bit of a slow burn. The first few days are hopeless – Friday and Saturday of this week, we've got tiny, weak swell with barely any energy (55 to 94), and the waves are just poor. You wouldn't bother. Sunday the 13th is where things start to change.
Sunday morning is where you want to be. The wind goes glassy, dead calm, and a nice little NW groundswell rolls in at 4ft with a period of 13 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 488 (moderate), and the conditions are expected to be good. That’s a proper window of clean, lined-up waves on the point. Sunday afternoon gets a bit onshore, so grab the morning.
Monday the 14th still has some waist-to-chest high NW swell, but it’s glassy early before the wind gets messy. The energy is dropping off though. Tuesday and Wednesday look pretty ordinary with onshore winds and choppy conditions, not worth your time.
Now, here’s the standout window. Saturday the 20th morning is the real gem of this outlook. We’ve got a clean 5ft NW swell with a 12-second period, and the wind is glassy. The energy is strong at 614, and the forecast says expect good surf. That’s a solid, clean head-high-plus day on a point break, and with it being inconsistent here, a day like this is a treat.
Monday the 21st morning is right up there with it. Another glassy morning with 5ft NW swell (12 seconds) and 657 energy. It's a carbon copy of the Saturday morning – clean, punchy, and well-shaped. Those two mornings are your best bets.
Later in the week, the swell gets a bit bigger. Wednesday the 23rd sees 5ft NW swell, but it's cross-onshore, so the quality drops. By Friday the 25th, the swell pushes up to 6ft with a 12-second period and the energy screams at 1031 (strong), but the wind is cross-shore, making it tricky. That one is for the experienced crew only – the size and power are there, but it won't be pretty. There is more swell after that, but the winds stay messy.
Overall, don't bother with the first week. The second week has two clear, clean mornings – Saturday the 20th and Monday the 21st – that look really special. The long period swell will work great on this point, giving you long, clean walls. Just be aware, with it being a point and likely to get crowded when it's good, "often" crowded means you’ll have company.
Stay patient, and hit those glassy windows.
Rusty.
