The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let me tell you straight: the surf’s been pretty bloody ordinary around here lately, and it’s gonna stay that way for a bit. We’ve got a long flat spell on our hands, so don’t bother waxing up just yet.

For the first week or so, there’s barely a ripple. The swell’s mostly under 2ft, with weak energy readings - those values are in the 12 to 62 range, which is dead. The wind’s mostly cross-onshore or onshore, and even the glassy mornings are just flat calm with nothing to ride. It’s a drought, plain and simple.

The first real glimmer of hope comes on Sunday the 9th. Playa de Ondarreta - Pikua (Pikua) wakes up with a 4ft swell from the WNW, period 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 207, which is at least moderate. It’s glassy in the morning, which will make it look clean, but it’s still just “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s the only thing on the board. The water’s 76°, and that’s about 5° warmer than normal for this time of year—that’s seriously warm, so a springy is all you’ll need.

After that little pulse, it fades back to nothing for the next week. We’ve got a few more glassy mornings, but the swell just doesn’t have any push. Energy readings stay in the 30s and 80s, and the period’s short, around 6-8 seconds. It’s not doing anything.

Then, on Sunday the 16th, there’s another blip. Morning brings a 3ft swell from the NNW, period 6 seconds, and it’s glassy early. Energy’s 105, which is back to moderate, but it’s still pretty average. The afternoon bumps up to 4ft but the wind goes cross-onshore, so it’ll be messy.

So, here’s the deal. This spot is inconsistent and sheltered, so it doesn’t take much to shut it down. What we’ve got on the 9th and the 16th are your only real shots, and they’re nothing to write home about. If you’re desperate, the 9th morning looks like the best of a bad bunch—clean glass, a workable 4ft, and the right direction. That’s your standout, but keep your expectations low.

The long-range stuff is only a promise, not a guarantee. If you can wait it out, it might get better, but right now, it’s a waiting game.

Rusty.
