The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks around Valdovino.
Honestly, I've got to be straight with you. For the first week and a half, it’s a real struggle. The swell is tiny, all mixed up, and the wind just won't play ball. We’re looking at a long stretch of pretty poor surf conditions from now until well into the next week. There’s a gap of about 10 days where the ocean is just flat and messy, not worth paddling out for. Keep your board in the car, but don't get your hopes up.
The only glimmer of light, and it’s a promising one, arrives right at the end of the outlook. On Thursday the 30th of July, the ocean finally wakes up. A solid, long-period groundswell pushes in from the Northwest, with a period of 13 seconds. That’s proper energy. The combined wave energy is a massive 2078, which is strong. We’re looking at waves around 8 ft, which is expert territory—definitely not one for the beginners. The wind is light from the NNE, so it’ll be a little onshore but with only small ripples, so it should still be fairly clean. This is a big, powerful, long-period swell, so it’ll be looking for a point or a reef to really line up, as it might close out a bit on a straight beach break. It’s a standout because of the sheer size and energy after so much nothing, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it.
Before that, there’s a slight uptick on Monday the 21st of July. The swell is 6 ft from the NE, with a combined energy of 405 (moderate). The morning sees a clean cross-off wind from the ENE, which is a good sign. It’s only a marginal call, though, so it’s more of a "maybe" than a "must-go." The water temperature is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, sitting around 63°F.
So, to sum it up: a long stretch of flat, poor conditions, but the last few days of the month have a big, powerful North-West swell on the horizon. That’s the one to watch.
Rusty.
