Playa de Espasante Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s going on for the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with you – it’s a tough stretch ahead. The whole 16-day window is looking pretty grim. There are no good surf options on offer at all. Every single session is marked as "poor surf conditions," and that’s just the reality of it. For a spot like Playa de Espasante, which is already very sheltered, a blank run like this isn't unheard of. It’s just one of those times where the weather and swell windows refuse to line up.

We start with a tiny pulse on Tuesday morning, August 4th, with a 3 ft swell from the west at 9 seconds. The combined energy is weak (137), and with a cross-offshore wind, it’s just not clean. The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there. That afternoon, the wind swings to the west and picks up to 15 mph, making it a cross-shore mess. That’s the story for the next few days: a bit of swell, but the wind is constantly onshore or cross-shore, ruining any chance of a clean wave. The swell ticks up slightly on Thursday morning, August 6th, hitting 4 ft from the north, but with a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore wind, it’s just lumpy and choppy.

You’ll see a few spikes in energy later on. Around Monday, August 10th, the combined energy climbs to 230, then 334 in the afternoon, as a 3 ft swell from the NNW with a long 12-second period comes in. But the wind is still cross-onshore, and the surf is rated poor. That long period is a tease – it would be great for a point break, but Playa de Espasante is a very sheltered beach setup, so it’s just not working.

The biggest combined energy readings come in the second week. On Saturday, August 15th, the morning energy hits 469 with a 4 ft swell from the WNW, and the afternoon is 419 with a 3 ft swell from the NNW at 11 seconds. But again, the wind is a moderate to fresh cross-onshore breeze. The swell size is up, but the quality is not. By Sunday, August 16th, we’re seeing 5 ft swells, but the wind is up to 19 mph, making it a lumpy, cross-onshore session.

There are a couple of glassy moments that might make you think, "Hey, maybe I can get a wave." On Friday morning, August 14th, we have glassy conditions with a 3 ft swell from the WNW, and again on Tuesday morning, August 18th, glassy with a 3 ft swell from the NNE. The problem is, the swell is small and the period is short (8 seconds or less), so the waves will be weak and disjointed. The combined energy is only 125 and 161 respectively, which is weak. It’s not really worth paddling out for.

When the swell does get a bit bigger – like 5 ft on Monday, August 17th – it’s a short period (7 seconds) and cross-onshore wind. That’s the kind of setup that’s more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. You’d be fighting a choppy mess.

So, the bottom line: no standouts. No hidden gems. It’s a full 16-day stretch of poor surf. Hang your boards up, work on your wax collection, or go for a hike. It tends not to stay this poor forever, but for now, the Atlantic is just not cooperating.
