The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what we’ve got coming up for Playa de Xago. This spot is a consistent performer, and we’ve got a slow start, but the second half of the period shows some serious potential, so pay attention.
Right now, the surf is pretty much flat to tiny. The water temp is sitting at 69°, which is about average for this time of year, nothing wild there. We’re looking at a few days of small, weak swell with poor conditions. Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th are write-offs, with waves barely hitting 2 ft and poor quality. Wednesday the 19th is glassy in the morning but with a tiny 0.7 ft wave, just not enough to get excited about.
Things start to wake up on Thursday the 20th. The morning is a bit messy with light rain and cross-onshore wind, but Thursday afternoon is where it flips. The wind goes glassy, and we get a 5 ft swell from the NNW with a period of 12 seconds. The energy jumps to a moderate 642, and it’s labelled as very good surf. This is the first real standout—clean, glassy, and a solid size that’s good for most intermediate surfers. It’s a bit big for beginners though, so keep that in mind.
Friday the 21st keeps the momentum. Morning is glassy with a 5 ft NW swell (energy 480) and calm winds. Friday afternoon stays clean with cross-offshore breeze. This is a solid, fun day of surf. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd drop back a notch with smaller, wind-affected waves in the 3 ft to 4 ft range and onshore vibes. Not terrible, but not a standout.
Monday the 24th is a bit of a mess—cross-on wind and a rising swell that hits 6 ft in the afternoon, but it’s lumpy and onshore. Tuesday the 25th is rain showers and onshore wind, with 6 ft swell but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s not going to be well-shaped. The rest of the week from the 26th to the 29th is mostly small or messy.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Monday the 31st of August is the big one. Morning brings a glassy, calm setup with a 4 ft swell from the NNW, but check out the period—17 seconds. That is a very long period groundswell, and the energy is huge at 1464. The waves will be clean, powerful, and long-lining. This is best handled by experienced surfers as it gets a bit hefty, and the long period means it will be better on the points and reefs, but at a beach break, it might jack up and close out in places. Still, this is the prime window.
Tuesday the 1st of September sees the swell peak at 8 ft in the morning with a 14-second period and huge energy (2466). That is expert-only territory—way too big for anyone but the pros. The wind swings onshore in the afternoon with 22 mph, so the window is tight.
The Bottom Line: The best bet is Thursday afternoon the 20th for clean, solid intermediate waves, and Monday the 31st of August for a serious, glassy groundswell that experienced surfers will absolutely love. The middle of the period is average, but those two windows are real gems.
Keep your eyes on the long-range forecast for that last week—it looks promising but less certain.
Rusty.
