Table - best surf conditions forecast for Playa de Xago over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer at Playa de Xago.
Right off the bat, the first week is a bit of a slow burn. The good news is that the water is sitting at 67°, which is a touch warmer than what you’d usually expect for this time of year, so that’s a nice little bonus. The bad news is that we’re looking at a long stretch of small, ordinary waves before anything really gets going.
We start with a tease on Thursday morning, July 9th. The swell is only 2ft from the WNW, but the wind is glassy, dead calm out of the NNE. The combined energy is weak at 66, so it’s not going to be powerful, but it’ll be clean. That’s pretty much the only bright spot for a while. After that, we hit a dry spell. Friday afternoon has another glassy moment on the 10th with the same 2ft WNW swell and a glassy NNW wind, but the energy is still low (85). Saturday morning the 11th brings a glassy start with a 2ft NW swell, but the period stretches to 11 seconds, which is a nice groundswell, and the energy ticks up to 108. Still, it’s small.
Then we get a real gap. From Sunday the 12th through to the morning of Saturday the 18th, there’s nothing really worth paddling out for. The waves stay tiny, the wind is mostly cross or onshore, and the scores are all terrible. That’s a solid week of poor conditions.
The first real standout comes on Saturday morning, July 18th. The swell is still only 2ft, but it’s from the WNW with a long 11-second period, so it’ll have a bit of push. The wind is offshore from the ENE, making it clean. The combined energy is 71, so it’s weak, but it’s the best we’ve seen in days. The break is very consistent, so you can expect a few rides. Just keep in mind Playa de Xago is exposed to the swell, and the optimum direction is NW, so this WNW swell is a decent match.
The next notable window is Sunday morning, July 19th. The swell holds at 2ft from the WNW, but the wind is dead calm (0 mph) and glassy. That’s a rare treat—clean, glassy surf, even if it’s small. The consistency is still there, so you can pick off a few.
Now, the real standout is on Thursday, July 23rd, into Friday, July 24th. Thursday afternoon sees a 3ft swell from the NNW with a very long 14-second period. The combined energy jumps to 377, which is strong to very strong (moderate energy). That’s a proper groundswell. The downside is the wind is cross-onshore from the NNW, so it won’t be clean. But the energy is there. Then Friday morning, July 24th, is the best call of the whole 16-day window. The swell jumps to 5ft from the NW, with an 11-second period and a combined energy of 544. That’s strong wave energy. The wind is onshore from the WNW, which is a bummer, but it’s a light breeze. The break is very consistent, so you’ll get waves. This is a solid swell, but at 5ft, it’s getting a bit big for beginners. The NW direction is a perfect match for the optimum swell direction. This is the one to aim for.
After that, Friday afternoon and the rest of the period fades back into smaller, wind-affected surf.
So, to sum it up: the first week is mostly a bust. The standout is Friday morning, July 24th, with that 5ft NW swell. That’s your best bet. The Saturday morning, July 18th, and Sunday morning, July 19th, are decent for a clean, small session if you’re desperate.
Rusty.
