The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Playa de Xago over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s gonna be a pretty slow start. We’re looking at a real flat spell to kick things off. The first solid chance to get wet doesn’t roll around until Monday the 20th of July, and even then it’s nothing to write home about.
The pattern overall is a long stretch of tiny, weak surf. From now through the weekend, wave heights are mostly under 3 ft with combined swell energy barely cracking 70 (weak). It’s all short-period windswell from the N and NNE, coming in at 5 to 6 seconds. That’s just not enough grunt to make anything worthwhile. The water is sitting at 69°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
The first real pulse hits Monday morning the 20th. Swell from the NNE bumps up to 6 ft with a period of 7 seconds, pushing combined energy to 269 (moderate). The wind is offshore from the ENE at 12 mph, so it’ll be clean. But it’s still a marginal call – the wave comment says “questionable tide conditions,” so it’s more of a look-see than a go-to. Surfable, but don’t expect magic.
Tuesday the 21st is similar, with 5 ft to 7 ft NNE swell, but the wind cranks up to 19 mph in the afternoon. That’s a fresh breeze and too much chop for good paddle surfing. The morning might be okay, but it’s a short window.
The standout of the whole forecast period is actually the last day, Friday the 31st of July. The morning is looking real promising. We’ve got a 4 ft WNW swell, period jumps to 9 seconds, and combined energy hits 236 (moderate). The wind is glassy – calm at 0 mph, turning to a slight offshore breeze from the WNW. That northwest swell direction is dead on the optimum for Playa de Xago (exposed to NW swell). It’s a glimmer of hope at the end of a long, flat tunnel. The wave comment says “expect good surf conditions,” which is the best we get in this whole outlook. The break is very consistent, so you can trust it’ll be working. Just be aware, crowds are “often,” so you won’t be alone.
The days before that, from the 22nd to the 30th, are mostly poor surf conditions with tiny waves, strong onshore winds, or just messy cross-shore junk. There’s a glassy morning on the 26th with 4 ft swell, but it’s a short-period 6-second WNW windswell, and the energy is only 151 – still weak. Not worth the drive unless you’re desperate.
Bottom line: you’re waiting until the 31st of July for the real score. The Monday the 20th is a maybe if you’re jonesing, but Friday the 31st morning is the one to circle. Glassy, clean, and a proper groundswell pulse.
Rusty.
