The Lowdown
Alright, grab your board – let's talk about Playa de Xago over the next couple of weeks. The first few days are flat, nothing to write home about. Saturday and Sunday (July 18-19) are tiny – we're talking knee-high dribble with poor conditions. Hang tight, though. The first real pulse shows up Monday morning, July 20.
Monday morning (July 20) – a clean little pulse arrives. Swell 5ft from the NNE, period 7 seconds, so it's windswell but the cross-offshore breeze from ENE keeps it tidy. Combined energy is moderate at 237. It's small but rideable, and with that consistency (very consistent) and intermediate-friendly size, it's a decent start. Crowds are likely here – it's a popular spot. Afternoon gets windier (16 mph), so the morning is the window.
Tuesday morning (July 21) – similar story: 5ft, NNE, 7s, cross-offshore, clean. Energy 220. Still not pumping, but fun for a grovel session. Afternoon winds pick up again.
After that, the swell drops off midweek – Wednesday to Friday (July 22-24) are marginal, with heights under 4ft and onshore trends. Not worth the paddle.
The real standout comes the following week. Monday, July 27 is a bit of a tease – 6-6ft from the NW, period 9 seconds, but the wind is cross-shore, not clean offshore. The waves will be there but messy. Hold out for Tuesday morning, July 28 – that's the one. Swell 6ft from the NW (matching the optimum direction), period 9 seconds, cross-offshore ENE breeze at 6 mph, clean. Combined energy 481 – moderate/strong. That's proper head-high, well-shaped surf with the right wind. Wednesday morning, July 29 is even bigger: 6ft from the NNW, period 11 seconds (longer period groundswell), energy 831 – strong, powerful. The wind is cross-offshore again, so it'll be clean. But heads up: that longer period (11s) can make a beach break like Playa de Xago fold a bit too straight, so it might be a bit walled. Still, for experienced intermediates, it's a cracker. Thursday morning, July 30 still has 4ft from the NNW, 9s, clean – a solid follow-up.
After that, the swell fades into August with small, ordinary conditions.
If I had to pick the best two windows: Tuesday morning, July 28 – clean, consistent, intermediate-friendly, and Wednesday morning, July 29 – bigger, more powerful, but watch the period. Both mornings have that light offshore breeze, so the waves will be glassy. Crowds are often here, so get there early.
