The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get this straight: Playa de Xago is the only game in town for the next couple of weeks, but it’s a tough stretch. The forecast is a real mixed bag of tiny, weak swell and winds that just won’t cooperate. You’ll be scratching for anything decent.

We kick off on Tuesday, 14 July, with a tiny 2ft swell from the north, but it’s got a short, weak period of 6 seconds, and the combined wave energy is a paltry 45 – that’s barely a ripple. The wind is a light cross-off from the east, so it’s clean, but there’s just no power. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. After that, we slide into a long, frustrating gap. From Tuesday afternoon all the way through to Sunday, 19 July, it’s just poor surf. We’re talking waist-high dribble, weak periods, and onshore or cross-onshore winds messing up what little shape there is. It’s a real flat spell.

Monday, 20 July, brings a flicker of hope. The morning shows a 4ft bump from the north-northeast, with the combined energy jumping to 150 – that’s moderate energy. The wind is a clean cross-off from the east, which is a good sign. But the period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s windswell, not a groundswell. It’s still marked as “poor surf conditions,” so don’t expect perfection. Still, it’s the most size we’ve seen all week, and with the wind angle, it might be worth a look if you’re desperate.

The next real standout, and the best I can see in this whole 16-day window, is Wednesday, 22 July. The morning is glassy – zero wind from the north-northwest – and we’ve got a 3ft swell from the northeast. The period is short at 5 seconds, but the glassy conditions are a huge plus. The combined energy is 55, which is weak, but it’s clean. This is your best bet for a long, slow session without any chop. The wind is dead calm, so the surface will be like a mirror. It’s only “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” but for this run, that’s a win.

After that, we get another patch of poor conditions. Winds turn onshore or cross-onshore through the 23rd and 24th, keeping the surface messy. There’s another faint glimmer on Friday, 24 July, with a 3ft swell from the west-northwest and glassy conditions in the morning. The period is 7 seconds, and the energy is 87 – still weak. It’s clean, but the swell is small.

The final chance to get wet is on Wednesday, 29 July. The morning is glassy again, with a 3ft swell from the northwest, a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy hits 127. That’s the best energy reading in the whole forecast, and with a longer period, the waves will have a bit more shape and push. The glassy conditions will make it look clean. It’s still only rated as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” but given the long stretch of junk, this is the session to circle on the calendar. It’s over two weeks away, so keep an eye on it.

Overall, if you’re not a patient surfer, this is going to be a tough one. The 22nd and the 29th mornings are the only real windows for a clean, if small, surf. The rest is a write-off. Keep your expectations low, and you won’t be disappointed.

Rusty.
