The Lowdown
Alright, mates, let's talk about what's coming up at Playa de Xago.
The water's sitting at 69°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year. Not gonna be a shock to the system.
Over the next week or so, it's a bit of a slow burn. The first few days are looking pretty flat and average. We've got a smidge of swell around Monday the 17th but it's tiny and cross-shore, so not really worth paddling out for. Honestly, Monday through Wednesday is for the dogs, not the surfers. There's a real gap in any decent surf until Thursday morning.
Thursday the 20th sees a bit of a pulse, with a NNW swell building to 4 ft and a period of 11 seconds. The energy is moderate (348). The wind is light cross-on, so it's not perfect, but it's the first sign of life. Could be a bit of a session for the keen ones, but I'd call it a marginal one.
We get a bit more juice on Friday the 21st with a 6 ft NNW swell (532 energy) and a 10-second period, but again, it's onshore and the conditions are a bit average. It's rideable, but nothing to get excited about. The weekend is more of the same – small, ordinary, and mostly cross-off or cross-shore. Not the best for a good groom.
The real standout starts to show itself on the 28th of August. That Friday morning the swell jumps to 8 ft from the WNW, with a 10-second period. The energy is massive (1310), and it's glassy with a light offshore breeze. This is the one for the experienced crew. It's a bit heavy for the beginners, but if you've got the skills, this is where it's at. The afternoon sees it even bigger at 10 ft from the NW, and the wind is light cross-on, but the swell is just too big for this break. The Saturday that follows is a monster – 15 ft from the NW with a 13-second period and a ridiculous 6164 energy. That's a super long period groundswell, which will be a sight to see, but it's definitely expert-only territory. The waves will be big and powerful, and the long period will make it a bit tricky at the beach break, but the point and reef should handle it beautifully.
After that, the swell drops back into the 7 ft range, but the wind turns onshore and choppy, so it's back to average conditions. The 1st of September has a 7 ft NW swell, but the onshore wind ruins it.
So, the best bet is clear: mark your calendar for the 28th of August. That Friday morning is the standout. Get there early for the glassy conditions and score some solid, clean waves. It's a bit of a wait, but it'll be worth it.
