The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty comin' at ya from the beach. Gotta be honest with you, we're in a bit of a flat spell right out of the gate. The first few days are a write-off for any real surfing. We're talking weak, small, poor conditions through Tuesday and Wednesday. It's a slow start, but the charts are showing a pulse of life later on.
The first sign of anything worth paddling out for shows up on Thursday, 20th August. It's not a classic, but the swell finally shows up from the NNW at about 4 to 5ft with a period stretching out to 12 seconds. This is proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy is moderate (523-560). The catch is the wind is cross-onshore and there's light rain, so it'll be a bit bumpy and choppy. This is a marginal call, a day for the die-hards only.
Friday the 21st sees a similar story with the swell holding around 5 to 6ft from the NW (combined energy 612-592), but again, the wind is cross-onshore or onshore, messing with the surface. It's a bit of a frustrating stretch of days where the swell is there, but the quality just isn't.
We get a little glimmer on Sunday morning, 23rd August. The swell drops to 3ft from the NNW, but the wind goes glassy. Dead calm. The combined energy is weak (95), but for a longboard or a funboard, those clean, little 3ft waves will be a welcome change from the chop.
The next real standout is a long way off. Friday morning, 28th August brings a clean, glassy start with a 3ft NW swell and a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (206). It says "expect good surf conditions". That's a solid morning for a session on a point break, that long period will wrap in nicely.
But the true highlight of this entire outlook is Sunday, 30th August. The morning is looking like a dream. The wind is calm, glassy, with a 4ft swell from the NNW at 10 seconds. The combined energy is strong (693). It's calling for "very good surf conditions". This is the morning to circle on your calendar. The afternoon holds up too, with a bigger 5ft NNW swell and still glassy winds, though there's a risk of thunderstorms. That morning window, though... that's the one.
Looking further out, Tuesday, 1st September is another promising morning. A clean, cross-offshore breeze will groom a solid 6ft NW swell with an 11-second period. The combined energy is strong (819). This is another excellent window for experienced surfers who can handle a bit of size and power.
And for the big dogs, Wednesday morning, 2nd September is the top shelf. We're looking at a 6ft NW swell, a 12-second period, and a clean cross-offshore breeze. The combined energy is very strong (1013). This is "excellent surf for experienced surfers." This is big, powerful, clean groundswell. This is the day for the crew with the big-wave guns and the experience to handle it. The afternoon goes onshore and gets messy, so make your move early.
So, to boil it down: the start is a dud. Sunday the 23rd is a small, clean option for a log. The absolute standouts are Sunday morning the 30th of August for the best all-round conditions, and Wednesday morning the 2nd of September for the biggest, most powerful clean swell. Be patient, and you'll be rewarded.
Rusty.
