The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
First up, the water temp at Playa de Xago is sitting around 69°, which is pretty much average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
The next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag to be honest. We’re looking at a long stretch of pretty ordinary conditions from now until the 4th of September. The swell is small, the wind is often messy, and the energy is low. For the first week, from the 22nd through to the 28th, the wave energy stays weak, with combined energy readings under 100 for most of it, and the biggest value in that period is only 217 on the 27th morning. The wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore, and the swell height is well under 3 ft. On the 23rd, the afternoon goes glassy with 3 ft of swell from the NE, but it’s only 6 seconds, so it’s barely surfable. The 26th also has a couple of glassy windows, but the swell is tiny at 1 ft and 2 ft. Not worth getting excited about.
The real standout comes on the 28th, but it’s a cruel one. We get a big pulse of swell from the WNW, hitting 10 ft on the morning and 8 ft in the afternoon, with combined energy readings of 1866 and 1159 – that’s strong wave energy. The period is 10-11 seconds, so it’s got some juice. But the wind is howling: fresh cross-onshore in the morning and fresh onshore in the afternoon. That’s a recipe for a lumpy, blown-out mess. This is a spot for experts only, and even then, the wind is going to wreck it. Honestly, with that much swell and strong wind, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
From the 29th of August into the 6th of September, the swell drops back down to the 3 ft to 5 ft range, and the energy is moderate (between 127 and 412). The best bet in the whole 16-day run is the morning of the 5th of September. That’s a Saturday, and we’ve got 4 ft of NW swell with a 10-second period, which gives decent shape. The wind is a light offshore from the WSW, almost glassy, and the break is exposed to the NW swell direction. The guidance says the optimum swell direction is NW, so that’s a perfect match. The combined energy is 369, so it’s moderate. This is a clean, surfable window with good quality. The Saturday afternoon on the 5th also has 5 ft from the NW with an 11-second period and onshore wind, less ideal. The 6th of September holds similar size but with cross-onshore wind, so the morning of the 5th is the clear winner.
Playa de Xago is a very consistent spot, so it’s frustrating that the wind is so often against us. The 5th of September is the only true standout in the whole period. The rest is either too small, too windy, or both. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but for now, I’d say wait for that Saturday morning.
Rusty.
