The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the pipe for Playa de Xago.
We’re looking at a pretty quiet start to the 16-day window. The first few days are a write-off – tiny 0.7ft to 3ft slop, mostly onshore or cross-shore breezes. You’ll be staring at the ocean and wondering if you forgot to turn the tap off. It’s not until the morning of Monday, July 20 that we finally see something worth paddling out for.
Monday morning, July 20, is our first real nod. The swell pushes up to 4ft from the NNE with a 7-second period, and the combined energy hits 206 (moderate). The wind is glassy, dead calm. That’s a beautiful thing. The break is very consistent, so you can expect a wave every set. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing wild. It’s an intermediate-level wave, so it’s good for the majority of us. The downside? Crowds are often here, so expect a few heads bobbing around. Still, this is the best bet of the early window.
The morning of Tuesday, July 21, also offers a window. Another 5ft from the NNE (combined energy 215), and the wind is cross-off from the ENE, keeping things clean. The swell is building, but the afternoon gets hammered by a 19 mph breeze, so make the most of the morning.
We then hit a bit of a lull from Wednesday afternoon through to the end of the month. The swell drops back to under 3ft, and the wind patterns get messy. There are a few glassy mornings, like Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26, but the swell is weak and ordinary – just 3ft to 3ft with combined energy in the 50-100 range. Not terrible for a longboard if you’re desperate, but nothing to set an alarm for.
The standout for the whole forecast period is the morning of Friday, July 31. The swell is a solid 6ft from the NNW (combined energy 460, strong), with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is light cross-off from the ENE, which should keep the face clean. This is a proper, powerful NW groundswell hitting the break. The optimum direction for Playa de Xago is NW, so this is a direct hit. The water temp is still about average. This is the one to circle on the calendar, but it’s over a week out, so keep your fingers crossed the forecast holds. The afternoon goes a bit lumpy with a moderate breeze, so it’s a morning session mission.
The final day, Saturday, August 1, fades out to 4ft from the NNW, with combined energy down to 174 (moderate). It’s surfable, but nothing special.
Overall, don’t get your hopes up for the first week. Monday, July 20 morning is the one to aim for early on, and then keep a weather eye on that Friday, July 31 morning – that’s the real gem of the 16 days.
Rusty out.
