The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s in store for Playa de Xago. Don’t get too excited just yet, because the first week and a half is a bit of a write-off for any decent waves. We’ve got about a week of so-so, messy stuff before a real window of opportunity shows up.
The overall pattern is pretty grim for the first stretch. The forecast shows a lot of poor surf conditions, with the wind often cross-onshore or onshore, making things choppy and uninviting. The swell energy is mostly weak, bouncing around between 44 and 192 for days on end, which is just not enough to get the heart pumping. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing to write home about.
Friday the 21st kicks off with a 6ft swell from the NW at 10 seconds, but it’s got that dirty cross-on wind from the W at 15 km/h, making it a messy, choppy affair. The combined energy is 667, which is moderate, but it’s wasted on the poor conditions. Saturday the 22nd drops to a weak 3ft, and while the wind is clean from the E, the swell is too small and weak (energy 192) to bother with.
Sunday the 23rd is a real tease. The morning is dead flat at 2ft, even though it’s glassy. The afternoon sees a bump to 3ft from the NE, but with a short period of 6 seconds, it’s just weak, disorganized energy (113). We get a few days of glassy, clean conditions from Monday the 24th through Wednesday the 26th, but the swell is tiny—2ft to 3ft—with combined energy struggling to even hit 100. It’s surfable, but only just, and very ordinary.
The first real pulse of power shows up on Thursday the 27th, with a 5ft NW swell at 9 seconds, but the wind is howling onshore and cross-on at 20-30 km/h, making it a total mess. A bigger 8ft WNW swell rolls in on Friday the 28th with a 11-second period, and the energy spikes to 1539, which is strong. But again, the wind is cross-on, and the surf description says marginal. At 8ft, this is getting into expert-only territory, and with the onshore wind, it’s just a washing machine. Not worth it.
Now, right at the end of the month, things finally come together. Sunday the 30th of August is the standout. The morning is glassy with a light SSE wind, and the swell is a solid 5ft from the NW at 9 seconds. The combined energy is 321, which is moderate and workable. The report says “expect good surf conditions.” This is the one. The afternoon stays clean with a light cross-off breeze from the ENE.
The following week is a mixed bag again. Monday the 31st gets messy again, but Tuesday the 1st of September has a glassy morning with a 4ft NW swell, though the energy is weak at 98. The real gem is sitting a full week away.
Saturday the 5th of September is the best on offer in the whole 16-day window. The morning is clean, with a light cross-off breeze from the E at 10 km/h. The swell is 4ft from the NW, but here’s the kicker—the period is a very long 14 seconds. That’s groundswell, and it’s packing a punch with a combined energy of 724. The report says “expect very good surf conditions.” This is a real promise. Because it’s long-period swell, it’ll be best at the point break or reef, and it might get a bit straight at the beach. But with clean wind, this is the session to pencil in. Keep in mind, it’s a week out, so the details could shift, but the potential is there. Crowds are often around here, just so you know.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a total dud. Sunday the 30th is your first real chance, and Saturday the 5th of September is the one that might actually be worth burning a day off for. Stay patient.
Rusty.
