The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what we’ve got for Playa de Xago over the next couple of weeks.
First up, the water’s sitting at 69.8°, which is 3.8° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s noticeably warm, so you can leave the thick wetsuit at home.
It’s a quiet start. Sunday the 19th is a write-off with tiny, weak waves and poor conditions. There’s a gap of no real surf until things start to show Monday morning the 20th. That Monday morning is where it begins to get interesting. Playa de Xago is a very consistent, exposed spot that handles a NW swell, and it's getting a clean 5.2ft swell from the NNE, with glassy conditions. The combined wave energy is moderate (285). The offshore wind is from the NE at just 3 mph – glassy. For an intermediate surfer, this is clean, fun, and user-friendly. The crowd factor here is "often", so expect company, but with waves this clean, it’ll be worth it.
Monday afternoon picks up a bit more size to 6.6ft from the NE, still clean with cross-off winds, but the energy jumps to 461. It’s rideable but the tide might be a factor – keep an eye on that. Tuesday the 21st holds solid, with 4.9ft to 7.5ft through the day, all clean, moderate energy levels (211 to 560). Some of the afternoon sets are pushing 7.5ft – that’s getting a little meaty for beginners, but for intermediates it’s a fun, punchy wave.
Wednesday the 22nd is glassy again in the morning, 4.6ft from the NNE, but the energy drops a touch (184). The afternoon gets a little cross-shore chop, but it’s still surfable.
Then we hit a flat spell. From Thursday the 23rd through to Sunday the 26th, it’s all tiny, messy, onshore junk. Swell drops below 1.6ft, periods are short, and winds are poor. That’s about four days of nothing.
Things start to look up Monday the 27th. The morning brings a clean, glassy 5.6ft swell from the WNW, with moderate energy (296). That’s a solid, clean morning session. But the afternoon gets messy with cross-onshore wind and bigger 7.2ft waves – not as clean.
Now, the standout. Tuesday the 28th. This is the one. Morning and afternoon both see a solid 9.8ft swell from the NW, with a period of 10 seconds – that’s proper groundswell, long period, packing serious energy (1648 and 2846). The wind is light cross-off, keeping it clean. But here’s the thing – 9.8ft is big. This is for experts only. Beginners, stay on the beach. This is also a swell that works best on a point or reef – at a beach break, that long period can make waves break a bit straight. But for the experienced crew, this is the week’s best chance at a proper wave. The crowd will likely be there, as it’s often busy.
Wednesday the 29th still has solid 8.2ft waves from the NNW with long period (9-10 seconds) and strong energy (1260 to 1034). Wind stays cross-off and clean. Again, this is advanced territory. Thursday the 30th drops to a more manageable 4.9ft, clean, from the NNW – a good day for intermediates to get back in.
After that, from Friday the 31st through to Monday the 3rd of August, it’s back to small, weak, onshore slop. Tiny waves, poor winds, not worth paddling out.
So to wrap it up: the best surf in this outlook is Tuesday the 28th for the experts – that 9.8ft NW groundswell with clean cross-off winds is a proper beast. For intermediates, grab Monday the 20th or Thursday the 30th when it’s cleaner and smaller.
Stay safe out there.
