The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I'm staring down the charts for Playa de Xago. We've got a long window here, 16 days, but don't get too worked up for the start—it's a bit of a slow burn.
The first half of this forecast is a tough one. For the first week or so, the wind is mostly cross-on and the swell is, well, average at best. You're looking at some weak energy readings, with combined swell energy numbers like 276 and 459 hanging around in the moderate zone on the 20th. That means messy, bumpy conditions. Not worth the paddle. Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st are a write-off with the cross-onshore breeze.
Then, Saturday the 22nd brings a shift. The wind goes cross-off, and the surf cleans up a bit. You're looking at waist-high sets, around 3ft to 4ft, but the period is short, around 8-9 seconds, so the energy is pretty average (147-273). It’s a chance to get wet but nothing to set the alarm for.
We hit a real lull from the 23rd through the 25th. The swell drops right out, with a combined energy of just 48 on Sunday the 23rd. It’s tiny and weak. The water temperature is about what you'd expect for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Things finally get interesting as we roll into the end of the month. The standout window is the last few days of August and the start of September. The real highlight is Wednesday the 2nd of September. We’ve got a clean 6ft NW groundswell rollin’ in with a solid 9-second period and the combined energy is pumping at 589. The wind is glassy in the morning. That’s your best shot at some proper, lined-up waves. It's an exposed spot, so it'll take that NW energy well, and the intermediate crew will be in their element. Thursday the 3rd is also very good, with a 6ft to 5ft swell, clean offshore easterlies, and the energy sitting at 585. Hit it early, because by the afternoon the breeze picks up.
Before those, Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st are also solid. The 31st looks magic—glassy conditions all morning with a clean 5ft NW groundswell and a combined energy of 472. That's a perfect morning session before the crowds roll in. But watch out, because this break is often crowded, so get there early.
To sum it up: don't waste your time this week. The surf is poor. Save your energy for the last Sunday in August and those first mornings of September. That's where the juice is. This is Rusty, signing off.
