The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a good look at what’s coming our way for Playa de Xago. It’s a bit of a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks, but there are a couple of windows that’ll get the stoke going.
We’re starting off with pretty weak, small conditions. The water temp is sitting at 69°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year – nothing crazy, just a pleasant little anomaly. The first few days are mostly made up of tiny, weak swells with combined energy that’s barely registering (61), so you’re not missing much. Sunday the 23rd has some glassy 2ft to 4ft waves from the NNE and NE, but they’re super ordinary. Honestly, it’s a bit of a flat spell to kick things off.
We’ve got a real dry spell from Sunday afternoon right through until Thursday morning the 27th – that’s several days of pretty poor, small surf. Thursday morning the 27th finally sees a pulse of energy pick up, with 4ft swell from the WNW and a combined energy of 181. It’s glassy early, which is a bonus, but the period is short (8 seconds), so the waves won’t have much push.
Now, here’s the real standout. Friday the 28th sees a big jump in size, but the wind is a complete mess – strong cross-onshore and onshore winds up to 19 mph. The swell hits 10ft from the NW with a very long period of 11 seconds and massive energy readings (2293 and 1879), but the wind is absolutely howling onshore. This is going to be a blown-out, choppy mess. For most of us, this is a no-go. Honestly, with that wind and size at a beach setup, this looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Only proper experts might find a window, but it’s grim.
Saturday the 29th is your best bet. The wind drops right out early, going glassy. We’ve got a solid 6ft NW swell (9-second period) and combined energy of 481. That’s a moderate, solid groundswell. The morning is going to be clean, lined up, and with that NW direction, it’s right in the sweet spot for the break. The waves will have some punch but won’t be too big for a confident intermediate. Keep an eye out for crowds, as this spot can get busy when it’s good.
After that, it fades back down. Sunday the 30th has some 4ft NW swell but it’s a bit ordinary, and then from Monday the 31st through the first week of September, it’s mostly small, poor, or blown out by onshore winds. There’s a brief glimmer on Friday the 4th of September with a 3ft NW swell and a longer 10-second period, but it’s not enough to get excited about. The second week looks pretty bleak overall – small, weak, and mostly messy.
So, to sum it up: if you’ve got a window, Saturday morning the 29th of August is your best call – clean, glassy, 6ft NW swell, and good energy (481). Get on it early. The big Friday swell on the 28th is a write-off for paddling. After that, it’s back to small, ordinary surf until the forecast changes.
Rusty.
