The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for La Arena.
Right off the bat, I’ll be straight with you – the next week and a half is a bit of a struggle. There’s a real dry spell for any decent waves until the 20th of July. From now until then, we’re looking at tiny, weak, and mostly poor surf. The combined energy is barely a whisper, sitting around 11 to 71 (weak energy) for the first few days, so don’t bother paddling out. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
The first real chance of something rideable comes on Monday the 20th of July. The morning session looks the pick with a glassy 4ft swell from the NNE, offering up moderate energy (206). It’s not world-class, but it’s clean and the wind is off. The afternoon gets a bit of a bump in size to 7ft from the NE, but the wind picks up to 12 mph from the ENE, making it a cross-off breeze. It’s surfable, but for the more experienced crowd only.
Tuesday the 21st follows a similar pattern: a clean 5ft in the morning from the NNE, but the afternoon gets blown out by a 16 mph cross-off. The energy is moderate (215 to 437).
Wednesday the 22nd of July offers another glassy morning, 4ft from the NNE (138 energy). That’s your best bet for a clean, easy paddle if you’re just starting out, but it’s still very ordinary.
Then we hit another gap. From the 23rd of July through to the 26th, it’s back to tiny, messy, and poor conditions. The swell drops right off and the winds are all over the place. Not worth the wax.
Now, if you’ve got patience, the end of the month starts to look interesting. The 28th of July rolls in with a 3ft swell from the NNW, but it’s onshore and the wind is light. The energy is actually strong (373), but the quality is questionable. The 29th of July sees a 5ft from the NW with a long period of 11 seconds, and a very high energy of 515 (strong). The wind is a light cross-on, so it won’t be perfect, but there’s some grunt in the water.
The real standout, the one I’d circle on the calendar, is Friday the 31st of July. The morning has a solid 6ft from the NNW with a period of 9 seconds, and more importantly, the wind is a light cross-off from the ENE (6 mph). The combined energy is 460 (strong) and the forecast says “expect good surf conditions.” That’s the best call we’ve got. The afternoon will get messy with a 12 mph cross-shore, so get out early.
Saturday the 1st of August sees a drop back to 4ft from the NNW (174 energy), clean enough for a morning session.
So, the bottom line: the first week is a write-off. The action starts on the 20th July, but it’s only a few sessions. The true highlight is the morning of Friday the 31st of July. Get out there for that one.
Rusty.
