The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s cut through the noise and get real about the surf ahead. We’ve got a 16-day window, and I’m not gonna lie, it starts off slow. The ocean is going to be taking a nap for a good stretch there at the beginning. We’re looking at a solid gap of small, weak surf and less-than-inspiring conditions for the first week and a half or so. But don't tune out just yet, because there's a light at the end of this tunnel. The charts are showing something promising building out there for the second week, something that should get the stoke levels up.

For the first week, from the 7th through to the 19th, we’re dealing with tiny waves, mostly under 3ft. The energy in the water is going to be weak too, with readings mostly between 26 and 177. There are a few glassy mornings, the 9th, 11th, and 12th for instance, where the water will be clean. But the swell is just so small it’s hard to get excited. On the morning of the 9th, we might get a knee-high wave with a period of 10 seconds, but it’s still a lot of work for very little reward. You’d be better off just enjoying the clear skies from the sand. This is a period for fixing dings and daydreaming, not for paddling out. We’ll see a little more energy on the 14th (137-177) and 15th (126-137), but the waves will still be weak and messy. It’s just not worth the effort.

Now, let’s talk about the standout. As we roll into the 21st of August, things finally start to wake up. The swell is going to fill in properly. By Friday the 21st, we’re looking at head-high waves, with a solid 6ft of swell hitting the coast. The energy reading is going to be strong, hitting 514, which is a huge jump from where we’ve been. This is the real deal.

The spot to be is Playa de Penarrubia (Playa-de-Penarrubia) . This is an advanced break, and for good reason. It's a beach and reef setup, so it's got a bit of everything. The swell will be pushing in from the NNW, which is just about perfect for this place. It's fairly exposed to the swell, so it's going to pick up all that energy. With the offshore wind on Friday morning, it’s going to be clean and hollow. This is the one to circle on the calendar. This is the morning to grab your board and go.

Saturday the 22nd is still looking good, with the swell dropping a touch to 4ft but still with plenty of punch, energy around 401. The morning is looking glassy again, which will have the waves peeling off nicely. The wind will be light, keeping the surface clean. Just be aware that the spot can get crowded, and with waves like this on offer, you can expect some company in the line-up. This break is for the experienced surfer, it’s consistent but it’s best to know what you're doing out there. This is a much better option than that groveling we had in the first week.

So there you have it. A long, flat spell, then a proper pulse of swell. The best bet for a real session is the morning of the 21st, with the 22nd not far behind. Get your energy up, the good stuff is coming.

Stay stoked,

Rusty
