The Lowdown
Alright, folks. Rusty here, talking in feet and miles.
We’ve got a long stretch ahead at Cabo Lastres, and honestly, for the first week and a half, it’s a real struggle. The surf is tiny and weak, with combined wave energy barely cracking 40 (18 to 43) for most of that time. The water is sitting about average for the time of year, nothing wild there.
From Thursday the 16th all the way through to Monday morning the 28th, it’s pretty much a write-off. You’ll see small 1ft to 2ft slop, mostly from the north, with periods around 5 seconds – that’s short-period windswill. The wind is a mess too, mostly cross or cross-onshore, though we get a few glassy moments on Sunday the 19th morning (2ft, NNE) and again on Sunday the 26th morning (1ft, NW). But even then, the energy is so low it’s barely worth paddling out for. This is a blank run that’s more normal for the area when the swell window shuts.
Now, there’s a glimmer of hope on Tuesday the 28th morning. The swell picks up to 4ft from the NW with a period of 7 seconds, and the energy jumps to 134 (moderate). The wind is glassy, so it’ll be clean. It’s surfable, but still very ordinary – a real "if you’re desperate" kind of session.
The standout, and the only real standout across the whole 16 days, is Wednesday morning the 29th of July. This is the one to circle. We get a solid 5ft groundswell from the NW, period stretching to 9 seconds, and the combined energy rockets to 446 (strong). The wind is glassy – dead calm – meaning it’ll be absolutely clean. The swell direction (NW) is right in the optimum for this point break. This is a proper expert wave, so leave the beginners on the beach. It’s a consistent spot, so you can expect waves, but crowds are possible, so get in early. The afternoon gets chopped up by a cross-onshore breeze, so make the most of that morning window.
After that, the rest of the month fades back into smaller, weaker stuff with poor conditions. The 30th and 31st still have some NW swell around 4ft to 4ft, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, ruining the shape.
So, if you’ve got the skill, the only real call is that Wednesday morning. Otherwise, it’s a long wait.
Rusty.
