Alright, let’s get real about this one. Rusty here, and I’m looking at Cabo Lastres for the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it’s a rough stretch. The wave energy is mostly weak to moderate, maxing out around 240, but the wind and the swell just don’t seem to agree on anything. This is a point break that needs clean conditions, and for most of the run, we’re stuck with cross or cross-onshore winds that ruin the face.
The first few days are a total bust. Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th of July are nothing but poor surf with those cross-winds. You’ll see a little bump on Sunday afternoon with 4ft from the ENE, but the period is a short 5 seconds, so it’s going to be weak and bumpy.
Then we hit a massive dry spell. From Monday the 6th all the way through to late Friday the 17th of July, it’s practically flat. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3ft, and the wind is almost always from the wrong direction. Wave energy often drops below 100, sometimes as low as 25.
There’s one tiny glimmer. On Thursday morning, the 9th of July, we get a glassy window with 2ft from the NW, period of 9 seconds. The wave energy is 80. The file calls it "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," which is the best we get. If you’re local, you might get a few glassy ones, but don’t travel for it.
The action finally picks up on Friday the 17th. Morning sees 4ft from the NW with a 9-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 240. The wind is cross-shore from the E at 9 mph. That’s the biggest push of the whole outlook. The afternoon holds at 4ft with good energy at 210. Still cross-shore, not offshore. For a point break, you want that wind to be cleaning it up. The water temperature was 69°, which is a full 4° warmer than normal – that’s much warmer than usual.
Then Sunday the 19th brings the biggest swell of the forecast at 5ft from the NW in the afternoon, but the period is short at 7 seconds, and the wind is a moderate 12 mph cross-shore from the ENE. The energy hits 237. This one’s going to be lumpy. Because the swell is over 5ft, it’s getting into expert territory and will be too much for beginners.
So, the call is simple: the only real standout is Friday the 17th. It’s the biggest, cleanest-looking window in two weeks. The energy is solid at 240, and the cross-shore wind isn’t perfect, but it’s way better than the garbage we’ve seen. It’s a promising one, but remember it’s a week and a half out, so treat it as something to watch. The 9th of July is your only other chance, and that’s just a small, glassy session. Crowds at Cabo Lastres are listed as "sometimes," so on a day like Friday the 17th, you can expect plenty of company for that point.
Rusty.
