The Lowdown
Gather 'round, folks. Rusty here. We've got a long look ahead for Cabo Lastres, and I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough one. This is a classic expert point break that needs the right swell, and for the next 16 days, the stars just aren't lining up. The first surfable hint of anything doesn't pop up until late July, so we're looking at a solid week-long gap with absolutely nothing worth paddling out for.
Let's start with the first real chance. On Monday morning, July 27th, we get a sniff of life. The swell is tiny at 2 ft from the NNW, but here's the kicker – the wind is glassy. That's a major positive. The wave energy is weak (97), and it's described as "surfable but very ordinary". It's not a standout, but it's the only window of clean conditions in the whole first week. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
The next potential window comes on Thursday, July 30th, with a morning session. The swell picks up to 4 ft from the NNW, with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy climbs to moderate (307), but the wind is a light cross-onshore. It's "marginal". The setup is a point break, so that longer period (10s) is workable, but it's not the clean, groomed face we're after.
Now, looking way out, we have a bit of a teaser. On Saturday, August 1st, we see the biggest swell of the forecast at 5 ft from the NNW. The combined energy hits strong (519), and the period is 10 seconds. The wind is a cross-shore breeze. It's rated as "marginal" again. For a point break, that's promising, but it's a long way off and the confidence is lower. If the wind holds, that morning could be the best of the bunch, but the crowd is sometimes a problem here, and it's an expert-only wave at that size anyway.
The pattern is clear: persistent poor surf quality with mostly cross or cross-onshore winds. The swell comes in pulses, but it's never coupled with a clean, offshore flow. The one standout, if you can call it that, is that Monday, July 27th glassy morning. It's a desperate play, but it's the only time the ocean looks smooth. For the rest of this period, you're better off waiting for the forecast to change.
Rusty, signing off.
