The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here, and it's a bit of a slow burn for Cabo Lastres. This is a solid point break that needs a good NW swell to get going, and we're looking at a long, quiet spell before things finally show up. The water's sitting at about 72°F, a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won't be cold while you're waiting.
We're starting with a real dry spell. From Sunday, August 23rd, right through to Wednesday, August 27th, there's almost nothing. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3 ft, with weak energy readings in the low tens to low hundreds. A few glassy mornings can't save it.
The first signs of life come on Thursday, August 27th. The morning shows a bump of about 4 ft NW groundswell, with moderate energy at 201, but it's just surfable and ordinary. The afternoon gets a little better, with the swell hitting 5 ft from the WNW and 309 of energy, paired with a clean cross-off breeze. It's the first real chance for a wave, but it's not a standout.
Friday, August 28th, is a big one, but for the wrong reasons. A massive 10 ft NW swell rolls in, with energy readings into the thousands (2268 in the morning!), but it's blown out by a strong cross-shore wind. It's a powerful, challenging swell for experts only, and it's going to be a messy battle.
The best window is Saturday, August 29th. The morning is glassy and clean, with a solid 6 ft NW swell (585 energy) wrapping into the point. This is a proper, rideable wave with perfect conditions. The afternoon sees the wind swing onshore, so the morning session is the one to nail. This is *the* standout of the forecast.
After that, the swell backs off. Sunday, August 30th, is smaller and cleaner in the morning, but nothing special. The rest of the week into early September is a slow grind of tiny, weak swells, often with poor, cross, or onshore winds. The energy readings are languishing below 200, and most days are a write-off.
Then, as we head into the first week of September, there are some promising signs. On September 6th and 7th, we see a new NW swell building, with energy back into the thousands and a long, 12 to 13-second period. The swell height is solid, around 6 ft to 7 ft, but the wind is a persistent cross or cross-onshore, making it marginal. It's a long-range promise, not a certainty, but it's the best thing on the horizon after that Saturday morning session.
To sum it up: the clear standout is the glassy morning of Saturday, August 29th. If you can get out then, you'll score the best waves of the whole window. The weekend of September 6th and 7th is worth keeping an eye on, but treat it as a promising maybe.
Rusty.
