The Lowdown
Right, gather round. Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Laredo. Let’s be straight with each other – it’s a tough stretch ahead. The water is running at 74°F right now, which is a wild 5°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, and it tells you something’s a bit off.
The first ten days or so are a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly messy cross-onshore, and the energy is weak. You’ve got a few days of glassy mornings around the 19th, but with only 1.0ft of swell, it’s barely a ripple. Then Monday the 20th sees a jump in height to 5ft from the NNE, but the period is a short 7 seconds, the wind is cross-shore, and the energy is still only moderate (193). That’s a messy, choppy combo.
The real problem is the wind. For a sheltered spot, we’re getting a lot of cross-onshore and cross-shore breeze that’s just ruining the face. The swell is never big enough to overcome it. From the 22nd onward, the wind does swing more offshore or cross-offshore, which cleans things up, but the swell stays tiny – under 3ft – until the 27th.
Finally, on Monday the 27th, we get a pulse. The morning sees 4ft from the NNW with a period of 10 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell, and with a light cross-offshore breeze and clean conditions, it’s the first real surfable moment. The combined energy hits 347, which is solid moderate. The water will still be warm, but the conditions are just ordinary – not terrible, but not firing.
The 28th is similar: 3ft to 4ft from the NW, clean with light winds, energy around 166-190. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about.
Then the 30th and 31st are where it starts to get interesting. Thursday the 30th has 4ft to 5ft from the NNW at 10 seconds, with clean cross-offshore winds and energy building to 365. That’s decent. But the standout is Friday the 31st. Morning is glassy, 5ft, 10 seconds, energy of 402. Afternoon is also glassy, with 5ft and energy hitting 572. That’s strong wave energy. The wind is glassy or near-calm, and the swell is a solid NNW groundswell. This is the best on offer, no question. It’s still a week and a half away, so keep an eye on the long-range forecasts, but this is the one to pencil in.
Saturday the 1st of August is also promising in the morning: 5ft, 11-second period, clean cross-offshore wind, and energy of 478. That’s another strong session. After that, it fades back.
So, the patch is dry for a solid week, then we get a run of surfable but ordinary days from the 27th, with the true standouts being Friday the 31st and Saturday the 1st of August. For a beginner-friendly spot like this, the 5ft to 5ft is perfect, and the glassy or clean conditions will make it super fun. Just be aware that longer-period groundswell like this can sometimes break a bit straight on a beach break, but for a sheltered spot, it should be okay.
Rusty.
