Right, let’s talk about the next couple of weeks around Laredo. To be straight with you, it’s a pretty quiet run. The first stretch has barely a whisper of proper surf. For the first week and a half, the small swells that do show up are weak, with combined energy bouncing around a measly 19 to 80 — that's barely a ripple. The water temperature is sitting at 72°, which is a notable 6° warmer than usual for this time of year, so it feels like a bath out there, but the waves just aren’t doing their part.
We start off with nothing really rideable from the 5th through the 11th. The swell stays tiny, around 0.7ft to 2ft, mostly from the NW. There's the odd moment of clean conditions, like Tuesday morning (7th July) with a light cross-offshore breeze, but the energy is too low. It's frustrating.
The first sniff of something better creeps in on Sunday the 12th afternoon. Swell bumps up to 3ft from the NNW, and the combined energy jumps to 171 (moderate), but it’s still a short period swell at 7 seconds, making for lumpy, weak lines. Conditions stay clean though. That modest bump continues into Monday the 13th with 3ft swell, energy at 151, and light offshore winds in the morning. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about.
Then we hit a bit of a lull again through the middle of the week before things start looking more interesting toward the weekend of the 18th and 19th. Saturday the 18th brings a noticeable jump: swell height hits 4ft to 5ft from the NW, with a period of 11 seconds (that’s a proper groundswell) and combined energy surging to 387 to 431 (strong wave energy). The catch? The wind is onshore or cross-onshore, which will chop it up. It’s a real shame because the energy and size are there. Sunday the 19th morning is the actual standout window: swell is 4ft from the NW, period 10 seconds, energy a solid 225, and it’s glassy with light rain. That’s the cleanest, most promising session in the whole outlook. After that, Monday the 20th still has rideable 4ft swell but the moderate cross-offshore wind will put a bit of texture on it.
So, if you’re patient, the best bet is the morning of Sunday 19th July at Laredo. The swell direction (NW) is spot on for this sheltered spot, and that glassy wind is a gift. It’s a beginner-friendly break, so the 4ft waves will be perfect. Just don’t expect any magic before that.
Stay wet,
Rusty
