The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty, and I’m looking at Laredo for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the first several days are a total write-off. We’re talking from Friday, the 17th, all the way through to Sunday morning, the 20th, with nothing but flat, weak, and messy conditions. Waves are barely a ripple, and the wind is all over the place, mostly cross or onshore. It’s a dead zone, plain and simple. You’re better off doing something else.
Then, Monday morning, the 20th of July, we finally see a little pulse of life. The swell comes up to about 5ft from the north, with a moderate combined energy of 194, and the wind is light and cross-offshore, making it clean. It’s surfable, but it’s nothing to write home about – just ordinary waves. The afternoon gets worse with cross-on wind, so that morning window is the only real chance that day.
The rest of that week stays pretty flat and frustrating. There’s a small clean window on Wednesday morning, the 22nd, with a 3ft north swell, but it’s weak and the energy is low (77). Thursday and Friday are blown out with onshore winds. It’s a grind.
We get a bit of a reprieve from Saturday, the 25th, into Sunday, the 26th, with clean offshore winds, but the swell is tiny – nothing over 1ft. It’s basically a flat spell with a pretty breeze.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. The real action is brewing for the end of the month. Tuesday afternoon, the 28th of July, things start to kick off. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the NNW with a long period of 13 seconds, and the energy jumps to 728. The wind is cross-offshore and clean. This is the first taste of something good.
But the standout – the one you’ve been waiting for – is Thursday morning, the 30th of July. This is the big one. We’re looking at a solid 8ft swell from the NW, with a period of 11 seconds and a massive combined energy of 1430. The wind is offshore from the WNW, light, and it’s going to be clean. This is a powerful groundswell, and at that size, it’s not for the faint of heart. Over 8ft, that’s expert territory. The water temp is currently around 73°, which is running much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you can leave the thick wetsuit at home.
Friday morning, the 31st, is also a cracker: 7ft from the NNW, offshore wind, clean, with energy at 1264. Another big day for the experienced crew. The swell does start to ease off into the first of August, dropping back to 5ft and 4ft, but it’s still clean and surfable.
So, the bottom line is: don’t even bother with the first week. The only real standout in this whole outlook is that Thursday the 30th of July. That’s the day you want to circle. Big, clean, and powerful. The rest is just waiting.
Rusty.
