The Lowdown
Rusty here.
Well, I gotta be straight with you. The surf outlook for the Laredo area over the next sixteen days is a real bummer. Looking at the charts, there’s nothing that gets me excited, not one decent wave on the cards. We’re staring down a long, empty run with no real swell to speak of and conditions that just don’t line up. The whole period is a write-off.
Let’s start with the only spot on the map, Laredo. It’s a sheltered beginner break that’s consistent, but that doesn’t mean much when there’s no energy. The water temperature is sitting at a very unusual 73°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year.
For the first week, from Wednesday July 15th right through to the end of Tuesday July 21st, it’s all poor surf. The swell is tiny, mostly around 1 ft to 1.6 ft, with a short, weak period of 4 to 6 seconds. The combined energy is pitiful, barely getting into double digits, like 8 (weak). The winds are a mess; cross-off, cross, and cross-on breezes that just chop up any chance of a clean wave. You’re better off staying at home.
We finally see a tiny flicker of hope on the morning of Wednesday July 22nd. The swell bumps up to 4.3 ft from the NNE, with a combined energy of 126 (moderate), and the wind goes light cross-off from the NNW. The report calls it “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s something, but not worth paddling out for.
From there, it’s back to the grind. Thursday July 23rd has a glassy morning with a tiny 2.6 ft swell, but the period is a weak 6 seconds, and the energy drops right off to 46 (weak). The rest of that day and through to the end of the month just fades away. There are stretches of glassy conditions on Sunday July 26th and Wednesday July 29th, but with swell heights barely above 1.3 ft and combined energy in the twenties and thirties, it’s flat calm. Not a single standout, not even a mediocre one. Just a blank run for the Laredo area.
