The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, checking in with the long-range outlook for our local stretch.
Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with you – the next week and a half is looking pretty flat and frustrating. We’ve got a real dead spell on our hands. From now until around the 20th of August, the surf is tiny and weak, with hardly any energy in the water. The combined swell energy is stuck in the double digits, mostly under 100, which is just sad. There are a few mornings with glassy conditions, like Wednesday the 19th, but with waves barely breaking 1 foot, there’s just nothing to ride. It’s the kind of stretch where you might as well wax the board and leave it in the car.
We start to see a little pulse on Thursday the 20th. The morning of the 20th, the swell picks up to 4 ft from the NW with a period of 11 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 273 (moderate). The wind is glassy from the WNW, so it’ll be clean. It’s not epic, but it’s surfable. The real action picks up Thursday afternoon, with the swell pushing 4 ft and the energy up to 459 (still moderate). The wind is a clean cross-off from the north, so the sets will have some shape. Friday morning the 21st looks similar with 5 ft swell and offshore wind, but it’s a bit on the inconsistent side.
But the real standout, the one you want to circle on your calendar, is the 29th of August. That Saturday morning is looking absolute fire. We’ve got a solid 13 ft groundswell from the NW with a 14-second period – that’s a long, powerful pulse. The combined energy is a massive 6459, which is strong to very strong. The wind is dead calm, glassy, and the water is much warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 75°F (anomaly of 5°F). This is going to be a big, clean, powerful swell. This is definitely for experienced surfers only – 13 ft is no joke, and it’s going to be heavy. The period is long enough that it could be a bit bowling, so take care. Saturday afternoon holds strong at 13 ft with a 12-second period and cross-off wind, still excellent.
The next week also has a few more chances. On the 30th, the swell drops to 7 ft but stays clean with offshore wind. The 31st looks good too, with a solid 7 ft swell and moderate offshore winds, but the energy is still high (around 969). It’s worth noting that on the 28th, the afternoon jumps to 10 ft with a 10-second period and light cross-shore wind, but that’s a lot of water and might be a bit jumbled.
So, the takeaway: don’t bother paddling out until the 20th. The 20th and 21st will give you something to surf, but the highlight is definitely the 29th of August. That Saturday is a big, powerful, glassy groundswell for the experienced crew. The week after that stays active with good, clean surf.
Rusty.
