The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer for Laredo over the next 16 days.
Honestly, the outlook is a tough one. There’s a long stretch of nothing worth paddling out for, so don’t get your hopes up early. The first real glimpse of something surfable doesn’t show up until late in the piece. The water is a warm 74°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a real anomaly of 5° above average, so you’ll be in boardies or a spring suit for sure.
The first decent chance comes on Monday the 28th. The morning starts with a clean 5ft swell from the NNW, period around 9 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate at 339. The wind is a cross-offshore breeze, so the lines will be pretty clean. The afternoon is similar, with 5ft swell and 354 energy, but still just “surfable waves with ordinary conditions” – nothing to write home about, but it’s the best we’ve seen so far.
The standout, and the only real highlight, lands on Wednesday the 29th. The morning session is the one to chase: a solid 5ft swell from the NNW with a period of 11 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell with some grunt. The combined energy is strong at 574, and with a light offshore breeze from the NW, it’ll be glassy and clean. This is the pick of the entire forecast. The break is a sheltered spot, so it’ll handle that size well. The swell direction is right on the money (NW optimum), so expect some well-shaped, lined-up waves. It’s a consistent break, so you’ll get plenty of waves. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, but with 5ft, it’s pushing the limit for learners – still fine for most intermediates. The afternoon on the 29th turns messy with cross-on winds, so get in early.
After that, the surf fades off quickly. The rest of the week into early August sees dropping swell, mostly under 3ft, with poor conditions and cross-onshore winds. There’s a two-day gap from the 30th to the 31st with nothing recommended, and then into the first week of August, it’s all below 3ft and not worth a paddle.
So, to sum it up: the entire 16-day window is a long dry spell, with only one true standout – the morning of Wednesday the 29th. That’s your window. Go early, enjoy the clean lines, and keep an eye on the forecast because gaps like this are pretty normal for the area, and it tends to turn around quick.
Rusty.
