The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with the long-range look. We’re in for a bit of a waiting game. Right now, there’s nothing for days, but it's not a total write-off. Hang in there.
We start with a blank run through to Wednesday 27th August. The water temp at Laredo is sitting at a very unusual 75°, much warmer than you'd expect for this time of year. The swell energy is weak (58) to start and the wind is onshore or cross-shore, just not doing us any favours. A few clean windows appear here and there, but the swell is too small and weak to ride.
Thursday 28th August morning is where it gets interesting. A big pulse of NW swell rolls in at 10ft, with a period of 12 seconds (a nice groundswell) and combined energy hitting a solid 2620. The wind is light and cross-offshore, cleaning things right up. This is excellent for experienced surfers only – that size is too big for beginners. The afternoon backs off a bit to 8ft with a moderate breeze, but still a decent session for the crew that knows what they're doing. This is the real standout: solid, clean, and powerful.
Friday 29th August morning has the swell dropping to a still-juicy 6ft, with glassy conditions and 10-second period from the NW (589 energy). Good waves for a wider range of surfers, and the crowd is likely to be there at Laredo since it’s a consistent spot. Afternoon holds at 6ft with a clean cross-offshore breeze.
Saturday 30th August sees the swell fade to 5ft, still with glassy morning conditions from the NE, but the period drops to 9 seconds. Surfable, but ordinary. The next real action is looking promising for Sunday 6th September, with another NW swell at 5ft and 11-second period, light offshore winds and clean conditions (755 energy). Heading into Monday 7th September morning, it jumps up to 7ft from the NNW with a long 12-second period and light cross-offshore wind (1572 energy) – that's a very good setup and another top contender for later in the window.
So, the short version: wait through the dry spell. Thursday 28th August morning is the big expert day. Keep an eye on Monday 7th September for another strong, clean session.
Rusty.
