The Lowdown

Right, grab a coffee, settle in. I'm Rusty, and here's the picture for the only game in town for a good while.

To be totally honest, the start of this 16-day window is looking pretty grim. There's a proper gap before we see anything worth paddling out for. The first few days, we're looking at flatness or close to it, with that combined swell energy barely making a dent. That water temp at Laredo is sitting at a very unusual 75°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – feels like a warm bath.

Things finally start to show a pulse on Thursday the 20th. We get a jump to 4ft of NW swell, and the energy reading climbs to 347 (moderate). The conditions are still just *ordinary*, not good, but it's a start. Friday the 21st is where it gets interesting. That swell bumps up to 5ft from the NW, with a nice 10-second period. The combined energy hits a solid 549 (moderate), and crucially, we get offshore wind from the W in the morning. This is the first real standout for the forecast. The break won't be perfect, but it'll be clean and proper for a paddle.

After that little burst, it fades again. Saturday and Sunday (22nd & 23rd) are a write-off with weak energy and onshore winds.

The second week is where the real promise lies, though it's further out, so treat it with a bit of caution. We see a big pulse building. Starting Thursday the 27th of August, the swell jumps to 10ft from the NW. The combined energy is huge, reading 1553 (strong). This is big, powerful groundswell. With that period around 10 seconds, it's going to have some good shape. This is only for the experienced crew in the water; the size (over 8ft) will be too much for beginners.

But the absolute best of the best, the one you circle on the calendar, is Monday the 31st of August into Tuesday the 1st of September. Monday morning shows an 8ft NW swell with a very long period of 13 seconds. The combined swell energy is a massive 2071 (very strong). The wind is offshore from the WNW. This setup screams quality. That extra long period will make the waves more powerful with better shape, but keep in mind it will be fat and straight at a beach break – Laredo is more exposed here, so it should be fine. Tuesday the 1st holds that excellence with a 10ft NNW swell, also with a 12-second period and offshore wind.

Then we have a glassy, clean finish on Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd of September with smaller, more manageable waves around 4ft to 5ft. A nice way to wind down after the monster days.

So, to sum it up: the first week is mostly for the diehards or for kitesurfers when it gets windy. The true standouts, the best bet for a proper session, are that Friday the 21st for the first clean pulse, and then the absolute highlight is the Monday 31st of August and Tuesday 1st of September for big, clean, powerful surf. Don't sleep on that late window.

Rusty.
