The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down what’s coming for Laredo over the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, it’s a pretty slow start. We’ve got a long gap of small, weak surf with no real recommendations until late in the first week. Most days show tiny waves, poor conditions, and energy readings under 100 or into the low hundreds – not worth suiting up for. A few glassy mornings here and there, but with swell barely hitting 2 ft, it’s flat more than anything.
The one day you want to mark on your calendar is Friday morning, August 28th. That’s the big one. Laredo gets a 10 ft NW swell with a 12-second period, and the combined energy is a very strong 2575. Winds are offshore out of the WSW at just 6 mph, so it’ll be clean and powerful. This is a wave for experienced surfers only – anything over 8 ft is getting serious. The morning window on Friday is the real standout.
Saturday the 29th still has some leftover size at 5 ft NW, with offshore winds in the morning and moderate energy (405). It’s a solid follow-up, but the quality drops from “excellent” to just “good”. Still a lot better than what comes after.
From Sunday the 30th into the second week, the swell fades hard. Waves drop to 3 ft or less, periods shorten, and energy falls into the weak range. There’s a tiny bump on September 5th with a 3 ft NW swell and a 10-second period, but it’s still pretty average. The second week is mostly small and forgettable, with clean but tiny waves on a longboard.
Water temp is 75°F, which is about 4°F warmer than usual – that’s definitely noticeable. You’ll be comfortable without a thick suit.
Crowds are often a factor at Laredo, but with so little quality surf for most of the period, you might find it quieter than normal. That Friday morning session though? Expect plenty of company.
Laredo is a sheltered NW-facing spot, and the swells are mostly from the right direction – just not big enough or consistent enough for most of the run.
Rusty.
