The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’.
Straight up, Playa de Berria (Spain) is in for a lean stretch. We’re looking at a solid 4-day gap of nothing worth paddling out for from the start of the forecast. The first few days are just small, weak windswell with poor conditions. The good news is it won’t stay flat forever.
The first real glimmer of hope shows up on Monday, July 20th, with a morning session. Swell bumps up to 4 ft from the NNE, with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 172 – enough to get a few rides. It’s a light cross-onshore breeze, so it’ll be a little bumpy, but for a beginner-friendly spot, this is the most promising window in the first week. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The standout for the whole 16-day window, though, is Wednesday, July 29th. The morning looks best. We’ve got a clean 4 ft swell from the NW, with a period of 9 seconds – that’s a solid groundswell, meaning better shaped waves and more energy. The combined energy is a strong 269. Winds are light from the NW, which is cross-onshore but light enough to keep it reasonably clean. This is the best mix of size, quality, and rideable conditions on offer. The afternoon stays similar, but the wind shifts a touch. This is a rare bright spot in a quiet run.
Honestly, for most of the forecast, the surf is small and the wind is messy. If you’re a kite surfer, the breezier, choppier afternoons might look more interesting than a paddle session. The last week has some small NW pulses, but nothing that really fires.
For the best session, be on the water at Playa de Berria on the morning of Wednesday, July 29th. It’s the pick of the bunch.
Rusty.
