The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it.
So, we’re looking at the next couple of weeks here, and I gotta be straight with you: it’s a bit of a mixed bag. There’s some swell on the way, but a lot of it comes with messy wind, so we’re gonna be working for it. The first real chance to get wet isn’t until Saturday the 22nd, so there’s a bit of a wait.
For the Saturday morning session, we’ve got some chest-high stuff at Coxos, coming in around 5ft out of the NNW. It’s a bit of an onshore wind early, which isn’t ideal, but it’s light. The water’s running a bit colder than it should be for this time of year, about 2°F cooler than average, so you might want a slightly thicker suit or at least a good hood. The swell energy is moderate, in the 484 range. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about just yet.
Now, Sunday the 23rd looks a little more promising. The wind shifts and we get a cross-offshore breeze in the morning, which is what we want to clean things up. Swell bumps up to 6ft out of the west, with a 10-second period. That’s a better combo for this spot. It’s still a bit of a look-see, but that morning session has potential. The energy is up in the 674 range, so there’s a bit more push behind it.
After that, things get pretty ordinary for a stretch. Monday and Tuesday are blown out and messy, with the wind turning onshore and the swell dropping off. There’s a couple of days there where I’d be doing something else.
We get another window of opportunity on Thursday the 27th in the afternoon. The swell is up again, around 7ft out of the NW, and the wind drops right out. It’s a bit of a gamble with tide, but if you can pick it right, there could be some decent waves. That energy is strong, pushing 777. This might be one for the more experienced crew, as that size starts to push it for beginners.
Then we’ve got a long run of onshore wind and choppy conditions right through to the end of the month. There’s plenty of swell, but the quality just isn’t there. It’s one of those frustrating stretches where it looks like it’s firing, but it’s all over the place.
Looking further out, there’s a spike in energy forecast for Thursday the 3rd of September. That’s a big pulse, with energy readings over 1000. But it’s coming with a strong onshore wind. It might be more of a power session for the kitesurfers than a clean paddle session, to be honest.
So, to sum it up: Sunday the 23rd is your best bet for a cleanish wave, with Thursday the 27th as a close second if you can handle the size. The rest of it is a battle against the wind.
Rusty out.
