Table - best surf conditions forecast for Coxos over the next 16 days.

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer at Coxos over the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, I’m looking at this forecast and feeling a bit flat. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing special ahead. The first real glimmer of anything rideable doesn't pop up until Sunday morning, the 12th of July. Even then, it's not much to write home about. We’re stuck with a NW wind pattern that’s just messing up the conditions for days.

For the first few days, it’s a write-off. Thursday the 9th through Saturday the 11th is all messy cross-on and onshore wind, with tiny swell and no energy. The swell is weak, with combined energy readings barely getting past 80. Just grim.

Sunday morning the 12th is the first real chance. The wind goes glassy, and the swell bumps up to 3ft from the WNW with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy hits a moderate 145, so there’s a bit of push. The water temp is 66°F, which is about average for this time of year. It’s surfable, but honestly, it’s very ordinary. It’s the best we’ve got, but that’s not saying much.

After that morning, it’s back to the grind. From Sunday afternoon right through to the 19th of July, it’s a mix of choppy, cross-onshore winds and small, weak swell. The energy readings are mostly in the weak to low-moderate range. We get a few mornings with a slight chance of something marginal, but nothing that’ll get you out of bed.

Now, hang on, because things get a bit more interesting towards the end of the window. On Monday the 20th of July, the swell picks up. The morning shows 4ft from the NW at 8 seconds, with combined energy at 161 – moderate. The wind is light and onshore from the NNW, so it’s not ideal, but it’s a step up. Then Tuesday the 21st keeps that energy around 4ft.

But the real standout, if you’re an experienced hand, is the 22nd and 23rd of July. On Wednesday the 22nd, we’ve got 6ft from the NNW, and by Thursday the 23rd, it’s pumping 8ft from the same direction. The combined energy is massive – 281 and then 705 on Thursday. That’s serious power. But, and it’s a big but, the wind is a problem. It’s a fresh to strong cross-onshore, making it lumpy and messy. At 8ft, that’s expert-only territory, and with the wind on it, it’s going to be a washing machine. A setup like this might honestly be more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, especially with that 25 mph wind on the 22nd afternoon.

The best of the best, and the only real standout session, is Friday the 24th of July. The morning shows 7ft from the NNW, with a combined energy of 741 – that’s very strong. The period is a better 9 seconds, and the wind is a moderate cross-shore from the NE. It’s still a bit tricky with a cross-chop, but it’s the cleanest we’ll see that big swell. This is a session for the experts only. The swell is big, and the direction is right on the money for Coxos, which loves it from the NNW. Keep in mind that Coxos is a reef break, so it can handle a long period, but with the wind being cross-shore, it’ll be a battle. Crowds are often here, so expect some company for that one.

So, to wrap it up: the first week is a dud, with only a tiny window on Sunday the 12th. The second week builds into a proper swell, but the wind is a killer until the 24th. If you’re an expert, mark Friday the 24th of July in your calendar. For everyone else, keep the board in the car and wait for the wind to play nice.
