The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll level with you – this outlook for the next 16 days is a tough one. We’ve got a solid, high-quality reef break in Coxos, but the wind and conditions are just not playing ball for a good chunk of the forecast. The water is sitting at 18°, which is a bit colder than what we’d normally expect for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent spring suit if you’re paddling out.
The first real sniff of anything rideable doesn’t show up until the morning of Sunday, July 19th. Even then, the quality is poor, but we start seeing some wave energy kicking in – around 103 (moderate energy) and 108 (moderate energy) on the Sunday, with a NNW swell of 3 ft and an onshore wind. It’s choppy and not clean.
We then hit a dry patch through Monday and Tuesday, with small, weak swells and poor conditions. It’s not until Wednesday, July 22nd, that the swell starts to push up a bit, hitting 4 ft from the WNW, but the wind is cross-onshore from the N at 12-16 mph, making it choppy and messy.
Thursday, July 23rd, is much the same – 4 ft from the WNW, but with a cross-onshore breeze. Not great.
Now, here’s the standout. Friday, July 24th is the best on offer. The swell bumps up to 4 ft from the NW in the morning, and by the afternoon it’s hitting 6 ft from the same direction, with a period of 11 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 543 (strong) in the morning and a hefty 975 (strong) in the afternoon. The wind is cross-onshore from the N at 19 mph, which is a bit lumpy, but this is the biggest, most powerful swell we see. It’s a proper groundswell, and at Coxos (a reef), the longer period should allow it to set up nicely. This is only for experienced surfers, though – at 6 ft, it’s getting solid.
Saturday, July 25th, is for the big dogs only. The swell hits 7 ft from the NW with a long 12-second period, and the energy is massive – 1187 and 1182 (very strong). The wind is fresh cross-onshore from the N at 19-22 mph, making it lumpy and powerful. This is expert territory, and with that much energy, it’s a serious, heavy wave.
After that, it drops off a bit. Sunday, July 26th, has 4 ft from the NNW, but the wind is still fresh and cross-onshore. Monday, July 27th, sees the swell jump back up to 7-8 ft from the NNW with a 9-second period, and the energy is 749 and 848 (strong), but the wind is onshore, so it’s going to be a bumpy, challenging session.
The last few days (Tuesday, July 28th, and Wednesday, July 29th) are a mix of smaller, choppy swells and bigger, messy ones. Nothing stands out as clean. Overall, if you’re after a window, focus on the afternoon of July 24th and the morning of July 25th – but only if you’re ready for a heavy, windy reef break.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on the forecasts. This one’s a waiting game.
