The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what Coxos has got cookin' for us over the next couple of weeks. We've got a mixed bag, so let's dive straight in.
The first real chance for a paddle comes on Tuesday morning, the 18th of August. We’ve got a clean 4.9ft swell rolling in from the NNW, and while the period is a short 8 seconds, the wind is a light cross-off at 9 mph. The combined energy is moderate at 275, meaning there’s a bit of push behind it. It’s a solid, if a bit short-period, start. The water temp is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year.
Let’s be honest, that Tuesday morning is the only real standout in the first week. The rest of the week gets blown out. By Tuesday afternoon the wind swings onshore and everything gets lumpy.
Now, if you’re patient, there is a little gem early on Wednesday the 19th. The morning session at Coxos is looking glassy with only a 3 mph offshore breeze from the SSW. The swell drops to a tiny 2.9ft from the NNW, period a short 7 seconds, and the energy is weak at 106. It’s small, it's weak, but that glassy surface makes it a beautiful little window for a longboard or a funboard. The afternoon turns to mush, so you’ve got to get out there early.
Thursday the 20th starts similarly glassy in the morning, but the swell is even smaller at 2.0ft from the WNW. It’s barely breaking, but for the die-hards it’s another clean, tiny window.
From Friday the 21st right through to the end of the month, the wind turns brutal. We’re looking at strong, fresh cross-onshore winds from the NNW, cranking up to 25 mph. The swell does get bigger, hitting 6.5ft to 8.2ft with moderate to strong energy, but it’s gonna be a messy, lumpy, blown-out mess. Honestly, with those conditions and the beach/reef setup, this looks way more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Beginners should steer clear of anything over 5ft, and the bigger days are strictly for the pros, or just skip them entirely.
The first week of September doesn't offer much relief. There’s a glimmer on Saturday the 29th of August morning, with a clean 4.9ft swell from the NNW and light winds, but it’s only rated as marginal. By the time we hit Sunday the 30th of August and Monday the 31st, the swell is pumping at 7.9ft to 8.2ft from the NNW with strong energy, but the wind is still a concern.
The real standout in the long range, if you can wait, is Sunday the 30th of August morning. We see a 7.9ft swell from the NNW, a moderate energy of 688, and importantly, a cross-off wind from the SSW at 12 mph making for clean conditions. That is a big, powerful wave that will be a challenge. At 8.2ft it’s definitely in the expert zone. The waves might be a bit straight at the beach, but this reef break should handle it nicely.
Remember, anything more than a week out has that "promising but less certain" feel, but that Sunday is one to watch on the forecast.
Stay safe out there.
