Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for our local stretch.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a rough patch. The next week and a half is looking pretty grim for a proper wave at Coxos. We're dealing with small, weak swell and a whole lot of onshore or cross-onshore wind. It’s not the kind of thing that gets you out of bed.
The 6th of July through to the 10th is a write-off. We’re looking at tiny swell around 1ft to 3ft coming from the NW and NNW, but the wind is mostly on or cross-on, keeping things choppy and pretty average. The wave energy is weak, sitting in the range of 34 to 82 (combined energy). This period is best spent on dry land or tinkering with your gear.
We finally get a little flicker of hope on Saturday morning, the 11th of July. A small 1ft NW swell rolls through with a bit more period (11 seconds), and the wind goes light at 6 mph from the NW, putting it on our backs. The energy is still pretty weak at 91, and the forecast calls it "marginal," so it's a cleaner water session for the longboard or a foiler, but not a standout.
Things start to look more interesting moving into the second week, but the wind is still the villain. Sunday the 12th of July sees a bump in size to 4ft from the NW (174 combined energy) and a clean offshore breeze from the SSW in the morning. That's the first real chance for a surfable wave, but the conditions are described as "ordinary." It’s the best of a bad bunch at this point, but nothing to get excited about.
From the 13th to the 18th of July, we see wind and swell fighting. The swell sits around 2ft to 5ft, but the constant cross-onshore breeze keeps the surface messy. By the 19th and 20th of July, the swell ramps up hard – we’re talking 5ft to 7ft from the NNW, with strong wind energy pushing 288 to 715 combined. This is where you might see some bigger, powerful lines, but the wind is howling at 22 to 28 mph cross-onshore. That kind of setup at a reef break like Coxos with this wind direction is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The swell is too big and the wind is too messy for a clean wave.
The biggest push comes on the 21st of July, a Tuesday over a week away. We're looking at a 7ft to 8ft NNW groundswell with an 8 to 9 second period. The combined energy is massive, hitting 1046. That’s a lot of water moving. But again, fresh cross-onshore wind is forecast. This is an expert-only zone – the height is well over 8ft and with that wind, it’s going to be a beast. Not a day for the faint-hearted, and definitely not a clean, groomed wave.
Honestly, looking at the whole run, there isn't a single day I'd call a standout. The best chance for something half-decent is the late morning of Sunday the 12th of July when we get a clean offshore wind for a brief window on a building 4ft NW swell. Beyond that, it's a waiting game for the wind to swing around.
Stay patient, folks.
Rusty.
