The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Coxos over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – this forecast is a bit of a grind. We’ve got a solid stretch of lumpy, wind-affected conditions ahead, with only a few fleeting moments of hope. The overall pattern is dominated by cross-onshore winds and choppy seas, which isn't what you want at a reef setup like this. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual there.
The first real chance to get wet looks like Tuesday morning, August 25th. It’s not a standout, but it’s the best we’ve seen in days. The wind drops right out, going glassy, with a light offshore breeze from the south at just 3 mph. That’s a major positive – it’ll be clean. The swell is a modest 4 ft from the west, with a short period of 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit weak and lumpy, but combined wave energy is only 153 (weak). It’s surfable, but very ordinary. If you’re desperate, paddle out.
After that, we’re back into a long, grim run. From Wednesday, August 26th right through to the end of the month, it’s a relentless parade of cross-onshore winds, fresh to strong breezes (12 to 25 mph), and messy, choppy conditions. The swell sizes bob around, but the wind is the killer. This is not a paddle-surfing setup. With the wind howling and the swell picking up to over 7 ft at times, a beach setup might be more interesting for kite surfing than anything else.
The calendar flips to September, and things don’t really improve. The first week of September is more of the same: strong north winds, cross-onshore, and lumpy waves. The swell gets bigger, with heights reaching 8 ft to 10 ft by the 5th and 6th, but with that stiff wind, it’s going to be a messy, blown-out wall of water. The period is short (9 seconds), so it’s not a quality groundswell – just a lot of energy with no shape. The combined energy is strong, hitting 1599 on the 5th, but it’s wasted with those winds.
The one possible flicker of light is Thursday morning, September 3rd. The swell is 5 ft from the northwest, but the period stretches to 12 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell, with long lines and energy. Wind is still cross-onshore from the north at 16 mph, so it’s not perfect, but the period is something to note. Combined energy is 1088 (strong). If that wind backs off, it could be the best session of the whole window. But as it stands, it’s still a waiting game. For now, the best bet remains that Tuesday morning glass-off. It’s not epic, but it’s clean.
Rusty.
