The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window for Bica is one of the toughest I’ve seen in a while. There’s a long, dry spell ahead before we even get a sniff of something rideable.
Looking at the whole picture, we’re staring down the barrel of a massive gap. From now, right through the 20th of August, there’s just nothing doing. The swell is tiny, the wind is howling cross-off, and the energy readings are pathetic. The combined swell energy is barely cracking 20 (19 on Tuesday the 11th morning) up to around 221 on Thursday the 13th afternoon, but the wave heights are all under 3ft and the wind is a mess. It’s not surfable.
We finally get a little bump on Friday the 21st of August. The morning shows a slight improvement: a 3ft swell from the WNW with a 10-second period, and the combined energy climbs to 165. The wind is a gentle breeze from the NNW, keeping it cross-off and clean. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is a touch warmer than average for this time of year, but that’s about the only nice thing going on. It’s surfable, but the report says the conditions are still very ordinary. Not a standout, just a last resort if you’re desperate.
The real action, if you can call it that, is late in the run. On Sunday the 24th of August, the afternoon has a 4ft swell from the NW with a 10-second period, and the energy jumps to 379. That’s moderate wave energy, but the wind is a fresh breeze from the NNW, still cross-off and messy. It’s the best size on offer, but the quality is poor. It’s not a day for beginners, as 4ft can be a handful with wind like that, but it’s not expert-only either. The crowd factor at Bica is “sometimes,” so you might have company, but with this quality, it’ll be a quiet session.
So there you have it. A long wait, then a couple of so-so days. The best bet is the 24th of August afternoon, but only if you’re hungry and the wind eases. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing with the strong cross-off breezes. Keep an eye on the forecasts, things can change, but for now, it’s a tough stretch.
Rusty.
