Alright, this is Rusty.
Look, folks, I gotta be straight with you. For the next 16 days, we are looking at a pretty grim stretch here at Praia da Foz Cabo Espichel Sesimbra. It’s a reef setup, but we’re going to have a long wait on our hands for anything that’s even close to rideable.
The whole first week, from Saturday the 4th of July right through to the following Saturday the 11th, it's almost entirely a write-off. We’ve got tiny little waves, mostly under 2ft, and when there is a touch of size, that nasty onshore or cross-onshore wind just ruins it. Saturday morning the 4th starts off with the best look of the whole period early on – a clean 2ft wave with an 11-second period and that light cross-off wind from the south, giving us a combined energy of 107. It’s surfable but very ordinary. By the afternoon, it’s gone. After that, it’s a desert of poor surf and choppy, lumpy conditions right through until the 12th.
We hit Sunday the 12th of July, and the swell tries to pick up a bit to 4ft from the NW with a 9-second period and the combined energy jumps to 206. But again, the wind is a strong cross-onshore, making it a messy, lumpy mess. That pattern of wind ruining the fun keeps going. There’s a brief moment on Tuesday the 14th morning where the swell holds at 2ft but with a nice 11-second period and a combined energy of 114, but the wind is straight onshore. It’s just frustrating.
The only real standout, and I use that term lightly, is the very last day of the forecast, Sunday the 19th of July. The morning shows a wave of 4ft from the WNW with a 9-second period, giving us a strong combined energy of 308. The wind is light onshore from the NW. That’s the biggest pulse in the whole window, but it’s still onshore. For a reef break, we need that wind to swing offshore to really make it sing. It’s not a classic by any means, but it’s the closest thing to hope we’ve got, and it’s still over a week and a half away, so don't bet the farm on it.
Overall, conditions are just not cooperating. The wind is our enemy for almost this entire 16-day run. We’ve got some moderate wave energy coming through on the 12th and 19th, but the quality just isn’t there for a proper surf. It’s looking pretty grim.
Stay patient,
Rusty
