The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let's break it down in feet and miles.
It's a slow start. From now through the end of July and into early August, it's mostly a waiting game. The first week is pretty much a bust. From the 19th to the 27th of July, the swell is tiny, mostly under 3ft, and the wind is all over the place – onshore, cross-onshore, blowing from the NW and WNW at 9 to 22 mph. The combined energy is weak. It's just not happening.
Our only spot, Praia da Foz Cabo Espichel Sesimbra, is a reef break and it's not going to do anything with this. It's usually fairly consistent, but this stretch is a complete blank for surf.
Then we get a window. On the morning of the 28th of July (that's a Tuesday), the wind shifts to a light NE at 6 mph, giving us clean, offshore conditions. The swell comes up to a solid 5ft from the NW, with a period of 8 seconds. The energy jumps up to a solid moderate level. That morning is your one standout. It won't be huge, but clean 5ft waves on a reef with good wind is worth the wait. The afternoon turns messy again as the wind swings onshore.
The 29th of July (Wednesday) has some size with a 6ft to 5ft NW swell with a long 10-second period and some serious energy, but the wind is cross-on or onshore again, making it lumpy and poor for a clean ride. That much power with bad wind is more interesting for kite-surfing than paddle.
As we roll into the first few days of August, the swell drops way back to 2ft to 3ft, and the wind stays onshore or cross-onshore from the NW and NNW at 12 to 22 mph. It's back to choppy, lumpy conditions.
If you want a wave, circle Tuesday the 28th of July morning. That's your best and pretty much only serious shot in the next 16 days. Everything else is a pass.
