Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for this stretch of coast. We’ve got a solid 16-day window to look at, but I gotta be straight with you – it’s a bit of a slow burn. The first week and a half is pretty grim, with a long gap of nothing worth paddling out for. The real glimmer of hope shows up on the second Wednesday, but it’s a long way off, so keep your expectations in check.

Right now, from the get-go, we’re looking at a run of poor surf. The onshore wind is the main culprit, blowing straight on from the NW and WNW, and it’s just wrecking any chance of a clean wave. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3 ft, and the period is short, under 8 seconds, so there’s no power behind it. The combined energy is weak, well under 100 (34 to 97), which tells you everything. This mess runs from Wednesday the 22nd right through to the end of the month. We get a little bump in size on the 25th, with a 5 ft swell from the NW, but it’s still onshore and messy, so it’s a no-go.

We finally get a brief moment of relief on Tuesday the 28th in the morning. At Praia da Foz Cabo Espichel Sesimbra (Sesimbra) , the wind goes glassy, and we get a clean 3 ft swell from the NW with a period of 9 seconds. The water temp is sitting at 69°, which is about normal for this time of year. The combined energy is moderate at 135, and the conditions are described as surfable but very ordinary. It’s the only window in the first week that’s even worth mentioning, but it’s a very small window.

After that, it’s back to onshore slop and cross-onshore chop for days. The wind is relentless, gusting up to 25 mph, and the swell stays small and weak. There’s a long, dry gap from the 28th afternoon all the way through to the 4th of August. Not a single decent wave in that stretch.

Now, here’s the one you’ve been waiting for. On Wednesday the 5th of August in the morning, something finally clicks. The same spot, Praia da Foz Cabo Espichel Sesimbra, gets a solid 5 ft swell from the NW with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a strong 517, which is a big jump from the doldrums. The wind is light and cross-shore from the north, which is a far cry from the constant onshore garbage we’ve been dealing with. The conditions are described as marginal, but with light cross-shore winds and small crossing ripples, it’s the best thing on offer. This is the standout. It’s not perfect, but it’s the only real shot we have in the whole 16 days. The swell is a bit much for beginners, but for intermediates on up, that’s a solid wave.

So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. Don’t bother. The morning of the 28th is a tiny, glassy blip. The real target is the morning of the 5th of August. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. It’s a long way out, so keep an eye on the forecasts, but as it stands, that’s the best we’ve got.
