The Lowdown

Alright folks, let’s get into it. Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for our stretch of coast. Truth be told, it’s a pretty flat and frustrating run for the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a solid gap of poor conditions right through the start, with a few small windows of cleaner but tiny surf further out.

The main break we’re looking at is Praia da Foz Cabo Espichel Sesimbra, a reef setup that’s fairly consistent but exposed to the swell. The water is sitting at 67°F—a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you might want to dig out the 4/3.

Right now, through Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st, it’s a write-off. Cross-onshore winds are in the 9 to 22 mph range, making everything lumpy and choppy. Swell heights are around 3 ft to 5 ft, but the energy is weak to moderate (95 to 391), and the period is short, so it’s messy. This continues through the first few days of September. Tuesday the 2nd and Wednesday the 3rd have even smaller waves, dropping to 2 ft, and the wind stays messy.

We get a small break on Saturday the 5th. The morning shows a little improvement: a 3 ft NW swell with a 10-second period, and the wind shifts to a light cross-offshore from the ENE at 6 mph. The combined energy is still moderate (198), but the conditions are clean. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. That same pattern repeats on Sunday the 6th with 3 ft waves and a light cross-offshore from the east.

There’s a moment that stands out, though. Monday the 7th of September is the best we’ve got. The morning is glassy—wind is from the SE at just 3 mph, with a tiny 1 ft swell from the NNW. The period is 10 seconds, so there’s some shape, but the energy is weak (65). It’s not going to blow anyone’s mind, but it’s clean. If you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s your window.

Then Tuesday the 8th morning is also glassy, with a 2 ft WNW swell and a 10-second period. The energy is still low (89), but it’s clean. After that, we’re back to cross-onshore winds and onshore slop for the rest of the week. The surf stays tiny, below 3 ft, with short periods, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore.

Looking further out, the 14th of September morning shows a 4 ft WNW swell with a 10-second period and light cross-onshore winds. The energy is moderate (329), but the conditions are marginal. It’s a long way off, so don’t hold your breath.

To be honest, there’s nothing here to get excited about. The best I can say is that the reef setup at Praia da Foz Cabo Espichel Sesimbra does occasionally clean up with those light offshore winds, but the swell is just too small and weak to produce anything worthwhile. This is a blank run for the area.

Rusty.
