The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Praia da Foz Cabo Espichel Sesimbra.

To be straight with you, the next 16 days are a tough stretch. There’s nothing on the cards that I’d call a standout, and honestly, the surf quality is just not there. We’re looking at a long, flat run with no real recommendations. The first suggestion of any surfable waves doesn’t really show up, and the whole period is pretty much a write-off.

The first few days, from the 31st of July right through the weekend, we’ve got tiny swell. On Friday the 31st, you’re looking at a 1 ft NW swell in the morning, weak wave energy (31), and cross-onshore winds. By the afternoon, the wind picks up to 22 mph from the NW, and the swell gets a bit more lumpy at 3 ft, but it’s still poor. The period is a short 4 seconds, so it’s just messy.

Saturday the 1st of August is more of the same: a 2 ft W swell in the morning, 9-second period, cross-onshore. The combined energy is still low (98). The afternoon has some clouds, but the wind is onshore at 19 mph, making it even worse.

Sunday the 2nd of August is flat and weak. The morning has a 2 ft W swell, again cross-onshore. The afternoon sees a slight bump to 3 ft from the WNW, but the period drops to 8 seconds and the wind is onshore. Energy hits 134, but it’s still a no-go.

The whole first week is a repeat of this pattern: small, weak swell, and always cross-onshore or onshore winds. The water temperature is about average for the time of year at 68°, with a slight anomaly of -1°, so nothing unusual there.

Mid-week, on the 5th of August, we get a bit more energy in the afternoon with a 4 ft WNW swell, but the wind is a fresh 22 mph cross-onshore, and the energy reading is 218. It’s lumpy and not worth paddling out for.

The 8th of August sees the biggest swell of the whole period: a 4 ft WNW swell in the afternoon, with energy hitting 270. But again, the wind is a fresh 22 mph cross-onshore, so it’s just messy and blown out. The period is 9 seconds, which is okay, but not enough to save it.

The second week, from the 9th to the 15th, doesn’t offer any improvement. We’re looking at similar swells – 4 ft to 4 ft from the NW or WNW, but always with moderate to fresh cross-onshore winds. The period is short, often 6 to 8 seconds, so it’s just weak, short-period junk. The combined energy values are moderate, ranging from 108 to 184, but none of it is clean.

The reef at Praia da Foz Cabo Espichel Sesimbra is exposed to the swell, and the optimum direction is from the W, which we do see sometimes. But the wind is never right. It’s consistently cross-onshore, with a few onshore days in between. The crowds are listed as “sometimes”, but honestly, with conditions this poor, you won’t have to worry about company.

To be honest, with this persistent wind and mediocre swell, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The beach-and-reef setup just isn’t working for us.

So, the bottom line: there’s nothing to get excited about. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that’s not unusual. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, don’t bother checking the cams.

Rusty.
