The Lowdown

Right, pull up a sand dune and let me have a look at the charts for Praia da Foz, Cabo Espichel, Sesimbra. I gotta be straight with you—this 16-day run looks like a bit of a write-off. We've got a massive gap of surf that just isn't worth paddling for. The first few days are tiny and weak, and the swell that tries to show up later gets hammered by the wind.

The water temp is sitting at 68°—a touch cooler than usual for this time of year, but nothing that'll scare you off. As for the break itself, it's a reef setup, which usually has some shape, but the conditions just aren't cooperating.

We start things off on Tuesday the 18th. Tiny 2ft NW windswell with a short period of 8 seconds, and a weak energy reading of 98. A light cross-shore breeze is ruining what little surface there is. Not worth the wax.

Wednesday the 19th is even smaller, dropping to 2ft with a period of just 7 seconds and energy down to 59. The morning looks clean with a light cross-offshore, but there's simply no water moving.

Thursday the 20th gives us a glimmer of hope with glassy conditions in the morning, but again, it's only 2ft from the WNW. The energy is soft at 53. You could probably float around on a log, but you won't be surfing. The afternoon turns into a messy, onshore gale.

Now, here's the killer. From Friday the 21st all the way through to the end of the month, the swell actually builds. We see it jump to 4ft on Friday, then 6ft by Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd, with combined energy climbing to strong territory around 429-467. The catch? The wind is howling from the NNW and NW at 19-25 mph, cross-onshore and lumpy as hell. This is a kiteboarder's playground, not a surfer's wave. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The 5ft to 6ft swell is solid, but with that wind, it's just a washing machine.

That poor quality persists right through the second week. The swell dips again, and we get another round of 4ft to 5ft NW swell from the 27th to the 30th, but the wind stays relentless from the north-west, keeping it choppy and messy. No standout days, no glassy windows, no clean faces.

Honestly, there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. The few windows of small, clean conditions have no energy, and when the energy shows up, the wind trashes it. You'd be better off buying a new board and staring at it at home. Forecasts can change, but right now, this is a tough stretch for anyone looking for a wave.

Rusty.
