The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here with the outlook for Praia da Foz Cabo Espichel Sesimbra. I've been staring at the charts and, honestly, it’s a tough run ahead for us.

The overall pattern is pretty grim for the next week or so. We’ve got persistent cross-onshore winds from the northwest churning the ocean up, making it look more like a washing machine than a surf break. The water temps are feeling a bit colder than normal for this time of year, sitting at 67°F.

Right now, and for the entire first week, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. We’re seeing swell heights between 0.7 ft and 5 ft, but it’s all short-period, choppy junk with that constant NW wind. The wave energy is weak to moderate (90 to 373), but the conditions just ruin it. Don't bother until the 18th of August.

Now, there is a flicker of hope. On the morning of Tuesday, the 18th of August, we get a brief window. The wind switches to a light cross-offshore from the SSE at 9 mph, which will finally clean things up. The swell drops back to a clean 4 ft from the NW with a period of 8 seconds. The wave energy is moderate (231). This is the standout of the whole 16-day window – the only time you’ll get a chance at some proper face shapes. Get out there if you can, because it doesn’t last.

After that Tuesday morning window, it’s straight back into the same old story. The winds go onshore again, and the surf quality drops right back to zero. The models show a few pulses of bigger swell later in the month (up to 5 ft) but with 19-25 mph winds from the NW and NNW, it’ll be a messy, lumpy, blown-out affair. That kind of wind and swell setup looks more interesting for the kite surfers than for us paddle surfers. For the rest of the outlook, there’s simply nothing to recommend.

Keep the head up, it’s a long blank run, but that Tuesday morning in the second week is your one shot.

Rusty.
