The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s on the table for our stretch of coast. Honestly, I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a tough outlook. The 16-day window is a real mixed bag, and most of it is a write-off. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor conditions, with a few brief flickers of hope that are just too short-lived to get excited about. There’s a big gap of days with no real recommendation, so don’t hold your breath for a solid session for a while.
The only spot on the radar is Praia da Foz Cabo Espichel Sesimbra, a reef setup that’s fairly consistent. Water temp is sitting around 69°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
We start off with nothing on Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd – just poor surf, strong onshore winds, and chop. Not worth paddling out. Sunday the 23rd morning shows a tiny glimmer, with a 6 ft swell from the WNW and a clean cross-off wind from the SSE. The combined energy is moderate (749), but it’s flagged as marginal. It’s the closest thing to a paddle we’ve got early on, but don’t expect much.
From Monday the 24th right through to the end of the first week and into the second, it’s a grim run. The wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, often strong, and the swells are short-period and weak. The energy readings are mostly in the low to mid hundreds, which is weak to moderate. The waves are messy, lumpy, and choppy. There’s a brief moment on Tuesday the 25th morning with a clean cross-off breeze and a 4 ft swell, but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s not going to have any punch. It’s surfable but very ordinary.
The pattern continues with no improvement through the end of August and into the first days of September. Wind stays unfavourable, swells stay small and short. By the time we hit September 4th and 5th, the swells creep back up to 5 ft – 5 ft, but the wind is howling cross-on at 19-22 mph, making it a choppy mess. The energy is still only moderate (320-372). For a reef break, this is a no-go for paddling. Frankly, with that much wind and swell, it’s looking more like a kite-surfing setup than a surfing one.
Bottom line: there’s no standout session here. The best you could hope for is a quick, underwhelming paddle on Sunday the 23rd morning, or maybe Tuesday the 25th morning if you’re desperate. Everything else is a flat, windy, or choppy dud. We’ve got a long blank run ahead, so don’t rush to wax up.
Rusty.
