The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.

To be straight with you, it’s a slow start. We’re looking at a stretch of nothing much from now until the end of the first week of September. The swell is tiny and the energy is weak – we’re talking combined energy values of just 141 down to 34, which is barely a bump. The winds are glassy or light, but with no real swell to work with, it’s just flat and pretty. There’s a solid 6-day gap with no real surf to recommend, so don’t bother paddling out until things change.

The first real glimmer of hope arrives on Monday the 7th of September. Overnight, a new NW swell fills in, and it’s looking like our standout window. Monday morning at Lugar De Baixo (Madeira) we’ve got a clean 4 ft swell from the NW with a 13-second period, giving a moderate combined energy of 397. The wind is glassy, dead calm from the east, so it’s going to be smooth as silk. That’s the best we’ll see for a while. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. This is a reef break, and it’s fairly exposed, handling that NW swell well. The wave height is beginner-friendly, but the reef bottom means you’ll want some experience. Crowds are possible, so keep an eye out.

Monday afternoon holds up nicely too, with the same swell dropping a touch to 3 ft, still glassy, still clean. That’s your day. After that, the energy drops off fast. Tuesday the 8th brings a smaller 3 ft NW swell, but the combined energy falls to 117, and the rest of the week looks like it’s back to small, weak waves and poor conditions.

Looking further out, there’s a flicker of hope on Monday the 14th of September with a 3 ft WNW swell and 11-second period, but it’s accompanied by a 15 mph cross-offshore wind, which keeps it clean but the energy is only moderate at 234. The following Tuesday the 15th has a similar setup with 3 ft WNW swell and 322 energy, but it’s still a week and a half away, so treat that as a promising but uncertain prospect. No real standouts in the second week – just a few days that might be worth a look if the forecast firms up.

Bottom line: If you can, pencil in Monday the 7th of September. That’s the pick of the bunch. The rest is either flat or only just surfable.

Rusty.
