The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down. The start is flat, but there’s some good stuff coming.
Right now, the surf is small and weak. Sunday the 23rd has a tiny 2ft swell from the NNW with a short 7-second period, and the combined energy is a weak 54. The morning is clean with a light offshore breeze from the east, so it’s surfable, but very ordinary. The water is a warm 76°, which is 5° warmer than usual – that’s much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be comfortable in a shorty or just boardshorts.
Monday the 24th drops off to almost nothing, with swells of 0.7ft and 1ft – not worth getting wet for. Tuesday the 25th is even worse, with a 0.3ft swell but a very long 13-second period from the NW – that’s a tease, but there’s no height to work with. The wind is onshore and messy anyway.
We hit a dry spell through the middle of the week. Wednesday the 26th has clean conditions but only 1ft – too small to get excited about. Then Thursday the 27th morning is where we finally see a pulse. The swell jumps to 5ft from the WNW, with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is 331 (moderate). The wind is glassy – dead calm – and it’s clean. That’s our first real standout. It’s a good size for the Anglet - Corsaires break, but the swell direction is WNW, which is not ideal for this exposed spot that prefers a W swell. Still, glassy conditions go a long way, and this is a solid morning session.
Friday the 28th morning gets big – 10ft from the WNW with a 12-second period and a massive 2697 (very strong) combined energy. That’s too big for beginners and only for experts. The wind is a light cross-onshore, so it’s a bit rippled, but the sheer power is there. The afternoon gets messy with a moderate onshore breeze.
Saturday the 29th morning is another standout. The swell drops to 7ft from the WNW, 10-second period, combined energy 788 (strong), and it’s glassy again. Clean, powerful waves right at the expert level. The afternoon gets cross-onshore and choppy, so hit it early.
Sunday the 30th morning is clean with a 5ft NW swell, 9-second period, energy 367 (moderate), and a light offshore from the east. That’s a solid, clean session for intermediate to advanced surfers.
The first week of September sees a drop-off. Monday the 1st is small – 4ft – and clean but ordinary. Tuesday the 2nd is even smaller at 2ft. Wednesday the 3rd and Thursday the 4th are tiny and onshore, with poor conditions. Then we get a gap of a few days with very little on offer.
The second week shows some promise, but it’s further out. Saturday the 5th of September morning has a glassy 5ft NW swell, 9-second period, energy 382 (moderate) – that’s a good, clean session. Sunday the 6th morning is also glassy with a 5ft NW swell, 10-second period, energy 432 (moderate) – again, clean and fun. But then Monday the 7th gets big again – 8ft from the NW with a 12-second period, energy 1728 (very strong) – but the wind is onshore and it’s raining, so it’s messy and only for experts.
The best on offer is the Thursday 27th August morning for its glassy, clean conditions and moderate swell, and the Saturday 29th August morning for the bigger, powerful swell in glassy conditions. Both are expert-level on the big day, but Thursday is more accessible for strong intermediates.
Crowds at Anglet - Corsaires can be an issue – they’re listed as “sometimes” busy, so expect company on those good days.
