Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ in Anglet over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it ain’t pretty. We’ve got a long, frustrating run of small, weak, and mostly blown-out conditions ahead. The swell just isn’t showing up with any real punch or direction that works for us.
Let’s start with Anglet - Corsaires. The water temp is sitting at a very unusual 74°F, which is a solid 7°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s pretty wild – feels more like the Med than the Atlantic right now.
Our first real shot at a surf comes Sunday morning, July 5th. We’re looking at a tiny 2 ft NW swell, but the period is a long 11 seconds. The wind is a clean cross-off from the NE at only 3 mph, so the surface will be glassy. The combined energy is weak at 133, but for a small wave, the long period means it’ll have a bit of shape. This is for beginners only – it’s small and clean, but don’t expect much push.
Sunday afternoon gets messy real quick as the wind swings NNW and picks up, turning it cross and choppy. That’s a write-off.
Monday morning, July 6th, looks similar. Clean again with an offshore E wind at 6 mph, but the swell drops back to 2 ft with a period of 9 seconds and the energy is a weak 59. Surfable, but just barely.
Tuesday morning, July 7th, is a real tease. Glassy conditions with a 3 mph N wind, but the swell is only 2 ft and the period drops to 8 seconds (40 energy). It’s smooth as a lake, but there’s just nothing to ride.
From Tuesday afternoon all the way through Saturday July 11th, it’s a complete disaster. Onshore winds, short period junk, and tiny waves. Honestly, it’s not even worth paddling out. We’re talking about a solid five-day gap of truly poor surf.
We see a slight uptick on Sunday July 12th morning. The swell bumps up to 3 ft, period back to 10 seconds, and the wind is a light cross-off from the NNE at 6 mph. The combined energy hits 138 – moderate but still on the low side. It’s "surfable but very ordinary" – and I’d agree. It’s the best we’ve seen in a week, but that’s a low bar.
Things stay ordinary but messy through the next week. Onshore winds and chop dominate. Even the swell bump on July 12th afternoon to 4 ft gets ruined by cross-onshore winds.
Now, there’s a little flicker on Thursday morning, July 16th. Glassy conditions return with a 3 mph NE wind, a 2 ft WNW swell with a 9-second period. The energy is weak (54), but the surface will be smooth. Again, a beginner-friendly window if you’re desperate.
BUT – and this is a big but – Friday July 17th is the one day that stands out from this entire 16-day outlook. The swell jumps to 6 ft from the WNW. The period is short at 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit gutless and fat, but the combined energy is a moderate 261. The problem is the wind. It’s onshore from the W and WNW all day, gusting. For Anglet, a beach-and-reef setup with 6 ft and onshore wind? That’s a choppy, lumpy mess. For experienced surfers, there might be some big closeouts to battle, but for the average weekend warrior, this is looking more like a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing day.
Saturday July 18th sees the swell vanish again under strong onshore winds (25 mph in the morning). The rest of the run through July 20th is back to tiny, weak, and onshore.
So, where’s the best? Honestly, there’s no true standout in this forecast. It’s a tough stretch. If I had to point to one session, it’s Sunday morning July 5th for the cleanest, most user-friendly conditions, even though it’s tiny. And if you’re an expert looking for the biggest, most powerful (but rough) waves, Friday July 17th is your only window for size, but be ready for a battle.
Stay patient, folks. It tends not to stay this flat for long.
Rusty.
