The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, let's talk about the stretch ahead for the French coast. I’m lookin’ straight at Seignosse - Les Bourdaines. This is a classic beach and jetty setup, wide open to the west, which means it’s a magnet for any decent swell. Right now, the water’s clocking in at what feels about average for this time of year, nothing wild.
We’re starting off on a bit of a quiet note, but there’s a little window lighting up for us. The first real action is on Thursday morning, August 20th. We’ve got a glassy 4 ft NW swell rolling in with a solid 11-second period. The combined energy is sitting at 414 (moderate), and with the wind glassed off, the conditions are looking prime. This is a standout session for the early birds. The afternoon gets messy as the wind swings NW and picks up, so don’t sleep on that morning session.
Friday, August 21st is a write-off. The swell bumps up a bit to 6 ft, but the cross-onshore wind is gonna chop it up and make it a struggle. Saturday morning, the 22nd, is the next real gem. The wind turns offshore from the east, cleaning up a 4 ft NW swell. It’s not huge, but the clean conditions will make it super fun. The energy is a bit lower (266), but for a beach break, that offshore wind is gold.
After that, we hit a flat spell. From Sunday the 23rd through to Tuesday the 25th, the swell drops right off. We’re talking tiny waves, under 3 ft, and the energy is weak (down to 18 and 35). It’s a quiet patch at home, but don’t stress – it’s just a lull.
Things start to grumble again around Wednesday, August 26th with a small 3 ft WNW swell, but the wind is iffy. The real kicker comes later. Thursday, August 27th sees a big jump in size, but the wind is onshore and howling. The wave energy hits 1400 (strong) by the afternoon, with 10 ft WNW swell, but it’s a mess. This is expert territory only, and even then, the onshore wind is gonna make it a battle. More a day for the windsurfers than the paddle crew.
Friday, August 28th through Saturday, August 29th stays big, with 7 ft NW swell, but the wind stays onshore. The energy is strong (900+), but the quality is poor. It’s big and raw.
Now, here’s the light at the end of the tunnel. Sunday, August 30th morning. The wind drops right off, swinging to a light SE offshore, cleaning up a solid 6 ft WNW swell. The energy is 402 (moderate), and the conditions are clean. This is a proper session brewing. Then, Monday, August 31st morning is looking even better. Offshore wind from the east, glassy conditions, and a 5 ft NW swell. The energy is 355 (moderate) and it’s clean. These two days are the real standouts in the second week.
Looking further ahead to Thursday, September 3rd morning, we’ve got a promising long-range call. A 7 ft WNW swell with glassy conditions and a 10-second period, energy at 970 (strong). The conditions look perfect, but it’s a forecast for over a week away, so keep your ear to the ground.
Overall, the pattern is: a couple of good windows early (Thursday and Saturday mornings), a flat spell in the middle, then a return to bigger, surfable conditions towards the end of the month and into September. The best bets are the clean, glassy mornings, especially when the wind is offshore and the swell is in the 4 ft to 6 ft range.
