The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s brewing for the next couple of weeks.
Alright, the picture at Seignosse - Les Bourdaines is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a bit of a wait on our hands, with a lot of small, onshore junk in the early days. The good news is there’s a serious pulse of energy trying to push through later on, but it’s going to be a challenge to get the right winds on it.
The immediate outlook is pretty flat. Sunday morning, the 23rd of August, offers a tiny 2ft NW swell at 8 seconds, but with light offshore wind it’s clean. The combined swell energy is weak (72). It’s surfable, but very ordinary. Then we hit a long dry spell. From Sunday afternoon all the way through to Friday the 28th, it’s mostly poor conditions with small, weak swell and messy onshore or cross-shore winds. Not worth paddling out for.
The first real event kicks off on Friday the 28th, but it’s a messy one. A solid 6ft to 7ft WNW swell rolls in, with combined energy jumping into the moderate range (702 to 884). The problem is it’s accompanied by strong onshore and cross-onshore winds, making it poor surf. This size is already getting too big for beginners. Saturday the 29th sees the peak of this swell, hitting 8ft, and combined energy is strong (1259). At that size, it’s expert-only territory, but with 12 mph onshore wind, it’s going to be a washing machine. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
We finally catch a break on Sunday morning, the 30th of August. The swell drops to a much more manageable 5ft from the NW at 8 seconds. The key here is the wind switches to a light offshore from the ESE at just 3 mph. That’s clean. The combined energy is moderate (250). This is a standout. It’s the cleanest window of the whole run, with decent wave height for a lot of skill levels. The afternoon gets messy again with a cross-shore wind, but that morning session is the one to lock in.
After that, it’s a return to smaller, messier conditions through the first week of September. We get a few marginal mornings, like Tuesday the 1st of September, with a 3ft clean swell but very weak energy (98). Then on Wednesday the 2nd, we get glassy conditions with zero wind, but the swell is only 2ft. It’s almost flat.
Looking further out, there’s hope. On Monday the 7th of September, we see a proper pulse. A 3ft NW groundswell with a very long period of 12 seconds. Combined energy jumps to a strong 434. The wind is offshore from the ESE at 6 mph. The conditions are clean. This is a long-range standout, so it’s promising but less certain. For a beach/jetty setup, that long period can make the waves a bit too straight, but with clean offshore wind, it’s a much better proposition than the onshore slop we’ve been dealing with. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no major surprises there.
Get that Sunday the 30th locked in, and keep an eye on the 7th of September.
Rusty.
