The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks at Larmor Plage. To be honest, the first week is a bit of a write-off for a proper surf. We’ve got a real bumpy start with messy, cross-shore winds and lumpy conditions that just aren’t worth paddling out for. The wait looks like it’ll be worth it if you’re patient, 'cause the second half of the forecast has some serious muscle rolling in.
The first real chance to get wet comes on Friday morning, 21st August. The swell is a clean 4ft from the WNW with a period of 10 seconds, and the wind is a light cross-offshore breeze. The water is sitting at 68°F which is about 2°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s a touch on the warm side. The combined energy is moderate at 322, and while it’s not a massive day, the conditions will be clean and surfable. It’s your best bet for a proper session early on, but be aware this spot is inconsistent, so you’ve got to be on it when it’s working.
The rest of that week and into the next is a real struggle. We get a drop in swell size with tiny, waist-high dribble and winds that are either onshore or too strong. Saturday morning the 22nd has a small 2ft with a gentle offshore wind, making it clean, but the energy is a paltry 89 – it’s a beginner’s splash-around or a good day for a log.
Then we hit a big gap. From Sunday the 23rd right through to Tuesday the 26th, the swell is tiny, under 2ft, and there’s just no power. It’s a proper flat spell.
Things get interesting again on Wednesday morning, 26th August, but not in a good way for surfers. We get a strong 5ft SSW swell, but the wind is a howling 25 mph onshore. The combined energy jumps to 584. This is a kite surfer’s paradise, not a paddle surfer’s. The same goes for the 10ft swell on Thursday the 27th – that’s heavy, expert-only territory, and the wind is messy.
The real standout, and the one to circle on your calendar, is Monday morning, 31st August. The surf is a solid 10ft from the west with a very long period of 13 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is a massive 2519, which is incredibly powerful. The wind is a clean cross-offshore breeze, so the conditions will be clean. But listen, at 10ft, this is for experienced surfers only. It’s too big for beginners. Also, with that long period, it’s going to be a bit straight and fast on the beach, so look for a point or reef if you can. The afternoon gets even bigger at 12ft, but the wind turns cross-shore and lumpy, so the morning is the window.
The following Tuesday, 1st September, is still solid with 8ft from the west, but the wind is messing it up. After that, it seems to drop off and get wind-affected again.
So, for the best of the bunch, I’m calling Friday morning, 21st August for a clean, fun size session, and Monday morning, 31st August for the big, powerful groundswell if you’ve got the skill and the nerve. The rest of the time, it’s either flat, bumpy, or blown out.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
