The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty here.
To be straight with you, the next couple of weeks at Larmor Plage are going to test your patience more than your paddle. The first week is mostly a write-off, with weak, messy swells and bumpy cross-shore winds doing their best to keep us all on the beach. The water is sitting around 69°F, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least it’s comfortable while you’re shaking your head at the ocean.
We finally see a bit of a pulse pushing through on Wednesday the 19th, with waist-high lines and a moderate offshore breeze that cleans things up. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. Friday morning the 21st is your best early call: the wind drops right off to glassy, and there’s some clean waist-high swell wrapping in from the west with a 10-second period. It’s small, but it'll be the most fun you’ll have in the first week. The energy is weak though (221), so keep your expectations set to fun, not epic.
From the 22nd through the 24th, it fades right off. Small, clean but gutless waves, barely knee-to-waist high. It’s a good time to sort out your gear, because the ocean’s not giving us anything to work with. A couple of fresh breezes and onshore slop move through mid-week, and there's a small pulse of energy on the 26th, but it comes with lumpy conditions and messy winds. Not worth the drive.
This dry spell runs almost the entire week, right through to the 31st. There’s a bit more size on the 29th, but it’s cross-onshore and choppy, so forget about clean walls. Honestly, if you aren't a die-hard, this is a perfect week to catch up on sleep.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. The first couple of days of September are pointing at a real change. On the 1st and the 2nd, a proper swell is on the cards, with strong waves pushing well overhead. The energy readings are cranked right up (1375 and 1560), which tells you there’s some real power behind this one. But be careful what you wish for—the wind is mostly onshore for the first day and a half, making it a messy, powerful beast. It’s only on the afternoon of the 2nd that we see a clean, moderate offshore wind line things up.
This is the standout of the whole outlook. We’re looking at waves in the 6ft to 8ft range, with a solid 10-second west swell and clean offshore conditions. That’s the day to be out there, even if it’s a bit of a paddle. It’s big enough to be proper, but the offshore wind will hold it open. For a beach break, the longer period is more prone to closing out, but with that direction, it should be holding shape. This is promising, but it’s still a week away, so keep it in the back of your mind.
A word on the setup: Larmor Plage is a fairly exposed spot and can get lumpy fast when the wind is up. With those strong, onshore winds forecast early next week and the size on the way, the ocean might look more like a kite-surfing playground than a surf spot. If that’s your thing, keep an eye on it.
So, for the short term, it’s a waiting game. Friday the 21st is your best bet for a clean, small session. For the real juice, mark the 2nd of September on your calendar.
Rusty.
