The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for our local stretch.
We’ve got a pretty grim run ahead for the next couple of weeks, I’m not gonna lie. The start of the period is a total write-off, so don’t bother paddling out until we hit the last few days of the month. The wind is ugly, the swell is messy, and it’s just not worth the squeeze.
The first real chance to wet a line arrives on 31 August. There’s a pulse of energy showing up, but it comes with a big caveat. We’ll see a solid 7ft to 8ft swell from the W to WNW, with a very long period of 12 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy numbers are massive (1716 on Monday morning, 2870 on Monday afternoon). But, the wind is gonna be a cross-shore mess at 12 to 16 mph, and the conditions are only rated as marginal. It’s a powerful swell, but it’s gonna be lumpy and pretty hard to manage. This is big, powerful stuff that’s really only for experienced surfers who know the paddle out. The tide could be a factor, too. It’s a tease, but not the day to call in sick for.
Then, we get a bit of a reprieve. The first few days of September offer a glimmer of hope. On 1 September, the afternoon shows a drop in size to 5ft from the west, but the wind shifts to a cross-off from the NW at 12 mph. The energy is still moderate at 572, and it’s clean. It’s a much better window than the days before.
The best window of the whole forecast, though, might just be the morning of 2 September. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the west, with a clean 8-second period. The wind is a light NW cross-off at just 6 mph, making for glassy conditions. The combined energy is low (171), so it’s not a beast, but it’s the most user-friendly and cleanest surf we’ll see. For a beginner-intermediate spot like Larmor Plage, this is the one to aim for. The water is sitting at 68°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s a bonus.
After that, it fades out again. The wind picks up and the swell drops, leaving us with nothing much to get excited about for the rest of the second week.
So, to be straight with you: the only standout is the morning of 2 September. It’s not a massive day, but it’s the cleanest, most surfer-friendly wave we’re going to get. The big swell on the 31st is powerful but messy, and only for the brave. Keep your eyes on the forecasts, but for now, don’t get your hopes up for anything magic.
Rusty.
