The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down in the old units.
Honestly, the first ten days or so are a write-off. We’re talking a long stretch of tiny, gutless waves with a persistent cross-off or cross-shore breeze that’s been messing with the surface. The swell energy is weak, barely reaching double digits (15 to 24), and the heights are mostly 1 foot or less. There’s nothing to get excited about until late in the run.
The only real standout in the whole 16-day window is the morning of Monday, 28 July. That’s when the ocean finally wakes up. An early morning offshore wind shifts the vibe completely. The swell jumps to 6 feet from the west, with a period of 10 seconds, giving it decent shape and energy. The combined energy sits at a strong 633, and the wind is light and offshore. That’s the call for the experienced crew, though at 6 feet, it’s pushing into the ‘too big for beginners’ bracket. The water is a notable 5° warmer than usual, so it’s much warmer than normal for this time of year. The afternoon does get messy with a cross-shore wind, so the early session is the only game in town.
The rest of the second week fades back into small, ordinary conditions. The morning of Tuesday, 29 July, shows a clean 3-foot wave from the WNW, but the energy is low (121) and the quality is described as very ordinary. It’s surfable if you’re desperate, but it’s not a highlight.
Crowds at Larmor Plage can be an issue sometimes, but with this much flat spell, the lineup will be quiet until that one morning in late July.
So, if you’re patient, pencil in the early hours of Monday, 28 July. That’s your one shot.
Rusty.
