The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s cooking over at Larmor Plage.

Honestly, if you’re looking for a proper surf, this stretch is going to leave you high and dry more often than not. The next week and a half is mostly a write-off. We’ve got nearly continuous "poor surf conditions" from now right through to the end of August, with very weak wave energy. There’s a bit of a bump in size mid-week on Wednesday 20th, with swell hitting 5 ft and combined energy at 401 – but the wind is fresh and cross-shore, so it’ll be lumpy and messy. Not worth getting excited about.

The first real glimpse of something surfable doesn’t show up until Friday 21st August. The morning low tide session offers a clean 3 ft swell from the west with a 9-second period and a light offshore breeze. The combined energy is a modest 169. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. The water temp here is 69°, which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year.

After that, it’s back to the doldrums. Tiny swell and cross-off winds dominate Saturday 22nd right through to Wednesday 26th. If you’re a beginner, the Tuesday 25th morning might be clean but it’s only 0.7 ft – barely a ripple.

Now, the end of the forecast period, around late August into September, gets a bit more interesting but is still tricky. Thursday 27th August morning sees a clean 7 ft swell from the WSW, with combined energy jumping to 614. That’s a proper pulse, but it’s a short 8-second period and is flagged as marginal. The afternoon of the 27th has a very long period groundswell of 4 ft from the west at 15 seconds, with an enormous combined energy of 1227. The winds are cross-off and clean, so the sets will be long and lined up. This is the standout of the whole outlook – a rare chance at some quality shape, probably best suited for a point or reef nearby if you can find one. Keep in mind, that long period can make beach breaks close out a bit straight.

The 31st August (Monday) brings another chunky swell: 7 ft from the WNW with a 16-second period and massive energy of 2143. But the cross-on wind from the SW will mess it up. That kind of size and wind might actually get interesting for kiting if you’re into that. For paddling, it’s going to be choppy and tough.

To sum it up: unless you can wait until Thursday 27th afternoon or Friday 28th afternoon, there’s very little on offer. The best call is the 27th afternoon if you score clean, long-period lines. Otherwise, it’s a long stretch of mediocrity.

Rusty.
