The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what Larmor Plage has got cookin’ for us.

Honestly, mate, it’s a tough stretch ahead. We’ve got a solid run of days where the conditions just aren't playing ball, with a big ramp-up in size late in the first week but no clean windows to go with it. This is more about waiting for a moment where the wind turns kind, because the swell is fairly consistent, but the quality is the problem.

The water is sitting around 66°, about average for this time of year, so no surprises there if you’re suiting up for that first session.

For Sunday the 23rd, we’re looking at some small, weak waist-high dribble from the east. A combined swell energy of just 51, so barely a push. The cross-off wind will keep the surface tidy, but the swell period is short and messy. It’s pretty poor overall.

Monday the 24th sees a bit more size in the morning, a bit over 3 ft, but that east wind is cranking at 19 mph and swinging cross-shore, making it choppy and lumpy. Arvo flips to an offshore breeze but the swell drops to knee-high.

Through Tuesday and Wednesday, it’s onshore, small and poor. Not worth paddling out.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting but frustrating. By Thursday the 27th, we start getting some real size. That morning we’ve got 7 ft from the SW with moderate energy over 500, but it’s cross-onshore and a bit lumpy from a 9 mph wind. It’s still not clean. Thursday arvo gets bigger, pushing 8 ft and 805 combined energy, but the cross-onshore wind is up to 19 mph, making it lumpy.

Friday the 28th is a beast. We’ve got an 12 ft swell with a long 11-second period from the WSW giving a massive 2814 combined energy. This is full-on big-wave territory, only for experienced surfers. But the wind is a near-gale cross-onshore at 31 mph, completely blown out. This setup would be way more interesting for kite surfing than paddling a surfboard.

Saturday the 29th drops slightly to 8 ft in the morning with over 1000 combined energy, but again, the cross-shores and cross-onshore winds from the west are fresh, leaving the surface lumpy and messy.

The following week is a slow fade. From Sunday the 30th onward, we’re back to small, weak swells, mostly under 3 ft, with only brief clean moments but not enough energy to hold your interest.

The only bright spot that’s worth a mention comes on Monday the 7th of September. While the guidance gives it a marginal note, you’ve got an 8 ft groundswell from the west with a 10-second period and a combined energy of 1840 in the morning. It’s powerful and consistent. The wind is cross-shore and strong at 19 mph, so expect lumpy, tricky conditions. This is definitely for experienced surfers only given the size and the chop, but if you’re hungry for some serious push and you can fight the wind, it’s the best of a messy outlook.

Other than that, there’s just not a standout clean, rideable day in the entire 16 days. The swell sizes come and go, but the wind never really plays nice for long enough. A rare moment to look at, but don’t clear your schedule.

Rusty.
