The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one. Looking at the whole 16-day window for Larmor Plage, the honest truth is we’re staring down a long, flat spell. There are no good surf options on offer here. The forecast is pretty much a blank run for the area, which does happen. The swell energy is just non-existent, and when there is a tiny bump, the conditions are blown out or messy. It’s a quiet stretch, so don’t hold your breath.
The first tiny sign of life doesn’t come until Wednesday morning, July 15th, but it’s a letdown. We’re looking at a weak 1ft swell from the W with a 10-second period. The combined energy is a measly 36, which is weak. The water is sitting at 70°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, a real anomaly at over 3° warmer. The morning has a light cross-offshore breeze from the WNW, so it’s clean, but there’s just no wave to ride. The afternoon gets worse – the wind swings to the W at 16 mph, becoming cross-shore, and the swell bumps up to 3ft but with a shorter 9-second period. The energy climbs to 133 (moderate), but the wind is creating a cross-chop, making it messy. The forecast has it as poor surf conditions.
The rest of the first week is a washout. Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th offer tiny, weak swells. Friday morning actually has a light offshore wind from the NNE at 6 mph, which would be perfect, but the swell is only 1ft with a combined energy of 22. There’s nothing to surf. Saturday the 18th through to the end of the month is more of the same: tiny heights, long periods, and cross-offshore winds that keep the water clean but can’t make up for the lack of real swell. The energy levels stay in the single or low double digits, which is very weak.
Even into the second week, things don’t improve. There’s a sniff of something on the 25th of July, a Saturday morning, with a light offshore from the NNE and a 1ft, 10-second swell. The energy is only 20, though. The afternoon has a bigger 1ft swell from the W with a 10-second period, which is a bit better, but the wind is howling from the NW at 19 mph, creating a cross-offshore mess. It’s clean but blown out. The very end of the window on the 30th of July shows a 2ft swell from the WSW with a short 7-second period, but the wind is onshore and choppy, so it’s not worth a second look.
Honestly, the best bet for any wave action here would be if the wind is cranking and the surf is poor – it might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. There’s nothing here for a surfer, folks. Keep the board in the car and wait for the next forecast.
Rusty.
