Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight up: this next sixteen days at Larmor Plage is a tough stretch. There’s no surf to get excited about until July 4th, and even then it’s a real mixed bag of small, ordinary waves with onshore winds spoiling things more often than not. We’re looking at a fair few gaps where you’d be better off doing something else.
The opening window on Saturday morning, July 4th, is your best bet of the whole run. The water’s sitting at 64°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. You’ve got a 3ft W swell rolling in with a 10-second period, giving the beach a modest amount of energy (212). The real kicker is the glassy NE wind at 3 mph – that’ll put a slick on the surface. It’s a beginner-friendly wave, but it’s inconsistent, so you’ll be waiting around. Don’t expect a crowd, though – it only gets busy sometimes. The swell direction is W, and the break likes SW, so it’s a bit off, but the clean conditions make it worth a look for the patient surfer.
Come Saturday afternoon, the wind swings to a WSW 16 mph cross-shore, and it turns into a choppy mess with 3ft waves. That sets the tone for the next week. Sunday morning, July 5th, has a little 2ft W swell (94 energy) with a light cross-offshore ENE breeze, so it’s clean, but the wave height is tiny. After that, from Sunday afternoon right through to Friday morning, July 10th, it’s a parade of poor surf conditions – cross-on and cross-shore winds, small swell barely scraping 3ft. There’s a couple of brief windows with clean-ish water on the 5th and 10th, but nothing worth paddling out for.
The next real bump appears on Saturday morning, July 11th. We get a 6ft W swell, but the period is a weak 6 seconds – that’s short-period windswell, so it’ll be crumbly and soft. The energy reads 225, moderate, but the offshore NW wind at 6 mph keeps it clean. Bit big for beginners, but not big enough to scare off intermediates. Still, the quality is ordinary, and the swell direction doesn’t match the break’s preference. It’s a maybe.
Sunday the 12th pushes up to 5ft W swell (365 energy) with a 9-second period. Morning has light cross-shore wind at 6 mph – just a few ripples – but it’s marginal surf due to tide or conditions, so it’s a gamble. Afternoon gets messy with a 16 mph W wind.
Monday the 13th is a nice surprise. Offshore NNE wind at 9 mph all day, making for super clean faces on a 3ft W swell (210 energy) in the morning, dropping to 3ft by afternoon. The period is only 8 seconds, so it’s a bit weak, but with offshore wind, you’ll get some fun little lines. This is the second real standout of the period for a log or a fish.
After that, from Tuesday July 14th through to the end on Sunday July 19th, the bottom drops out. Swell fades to below 2ft, most days with cross-on or onshore wind. A few mornings have a light offshore or cross-off breeze (17th, 18th, 19th) but the swell is pathetic – 1ft to 2ft with low energy (10 to 38). You could get a knee-high wave on a longboard, but it’s not really surf.
So, my call: if you want the best of a bad bunch, hit Saturday morning, July 4th, for the glassy conditions and 3ft swell. The second pick is Monday the 13th for the offshore wind and clean 3ft to 3ft waves. The rest is a waiting game. Forecasts can change, but right now, this stretch is mostly for the dog walkers.
Rusty.
