The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer at Port Rhu over the next couple of weeks.

Straight up, I’ll be honest with you: this is a tough one for the paddlers. The whole 16-day window is a flat or near-flat affair with hardly any energy to speak of. The wave energy is weak throughout, with values sitting in the two-digit range for most of the period. The best you’ll see is a brief spike of moderate energy hitting 271 on the Wednesday morning of the 5th, but even then, the swell is small, short period, and the wind is onshore, so it’s not going to be any good for surfing. In fact, most of the period is classed as poor surf conditions. There’s a long stretch of nothing from the start all the way through, with only a couple of days that even get a “surfable but very ordinary” tag.

The first real chance to get wet comes on Thursday, August 13th, in the morning. The swell is tiny at 2ft from the west, with a short period of 8 seconds. The energy is still weak (53). The wind is light from the east at 6 mph, which is offshore. That’ll keep the surface clean. It’s not a standout, but it’s the best you’re going to get. The water temperature is about average for this time of year.

After that, things get another go on Sunday, August 16th, in the morning. Same story: 3ft from the west, 8-second period, weak energy (92). The wind is offshore from the east at 12 mph, keeping it moderately offshore and clean. This is surfable, but nothing to write home about.

Then the final chance shows up on Monday, August 17th, in the morning. Again, 3ft from the west, 8-second period, weak energy (96). The wind is gentle offshore from the east at 9 mph, so it’s clean. Still very ordinary.

There are no standouts here, no big swell, no long period pumping groundswell. The best on offer is those few mornings with a little clean, waist-high dribble. If you are desperate for a paddle, the 13th, 16th, and 17th mornings are your only real options. The rest of the time, it’s a flat, choppy, or blown-out mess. For a spot like this, a blank run this long is a bit unusual, but it happens. The setup is not interesting for kiting either, given the weak energy.

Rusty.
