The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cooking for the next couple of weeks.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough stretch for surf at Guidel Plages. We're looking at a long, quiet start with barely a ripple. From Sunday the 19th right through to the end of July, the swell is tiny, mostly around 0.7ft to 1.0ft. The wind is offshore for a lot of that first week, which is frustrating because the conditions would be clean, but there's just no energy in the water to work with. The combined swell energy is in the double digits (14 down to 6), which is very weak, so it's a real skunk session if you paddle out.
We do get a bit of a pulse starting around the 28th of July. Tuesday morning the 28th sees the swell bump up to 4ft from the west, but it's a short period wind swell (8 seconds) and the wind is onshore and messy. The energy jumps to 169 (moderate), but the quality is poor. It's a beach and reef setup, and with the onshore wind and that short period, this might be more interesting for the kite surfing crew than for paddle surfing.
The one standout, and I mean the one true highlight in this whole 16-day window, is the morning of Wednesday the 29th of July. It's glassy, calm, with the wind at 0 mph. The swell is 4ft from the west with a 7-second period, and the combined energy is a solid 207 (moderate). The optimum direction for this break is southwest, so a west swell is a bit off, but the complete lack of wind means it will be super clean. It's a very consistent spot, so it should be breaking. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing crazy. This is your best window, so if you can get out that morning, you'll score some fun, clean little waves.
After that, Thursday the 30th has a 3ft swell with a light cross-off wind, so it's surfable but ordinary. The energy drops to 175. The 1st of August has a bigger 5ft swell from the WNW, but the wind is a light cross-on, and the energy is a whopping 823 (very strong), but the conditions are only marginal.
So, to sum it up: you've got a week of flatness, then a tiny window of hope on the 29th morning, and then a few more days of messy, onshore conditions. The long-range stuff on the 3rd of August looks clean again but with a small 3ft swell. It's not a classic summer run, but that one glassy morning could be a real treat if you're patient.
Rusty.
