The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s in the water for the next couple of weeks.
First off, I’ve got to be straight with you – the next week and a half is looking pretty grim. We’re staring down the barrel of a long, dry spell with hardly any swell to speak of. From now until about the 23rd of July, the ocean’s going to be mostly flat or just showing tiny, weak waves. You’ll see a few clean mornings here and there, but the swell is so small it’s barely worth the paddle out. The wind will chop things up on most afternoons too. It’s a real test of patience.
The first real glimmer of hope shows up on the morning of Wednesday, 23rd July. The wind flips offshore, light and clean from the NE, and we finally see a pulse of swell. It’s still small, around 3ft, but it’s a start. The water is warm, about 69° now, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a bit of a treat.
Things start to get interesting on the morning of Thursday, 24th July. We’ve got a 6ft SW swell rolling in, with a period of 7 seconds. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the E, and the combined wave energy is moderate (669). It’s not perfect, but it’s the first real surfable day we’ve had in a while. The morning is your window.
Now, the standout. Set your alarms for the morning of Saturday, 25th July. This is the one to circle. We’re looking at a solid 7ft WSW swell with a period of 10 seconds – that’s good groundswell energy. The combined energy is strong (804). The wind? It’s going to be glassy, with a slight ESE breeze and the conditions are clean. This is the best on offer for the whole 16-day run. The break is Guidel Plages – a beach and reef setup that’s very consistent. The swell direction is from the WSW, which is a perfect match for the optimum SW direction. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, but at 7ft, it’s getting a bit meaty for the learners. The crowds can be a problem here sometimes, but on a morning like this, it’s worth the company.
The Sunday morning, 26th July, still has some size at 5ft from the W, but the wind goes cross-shore and the energy drops, so it’s not as clean. The following Monday morning, 27th July, is another peek at the same swell – 6ft from the WSW, with glassy conditions and a solid 9-second period. That’s another good session if you missed the Saturday. After that, the winds start to get messy again and the swell fades out. So, if you’re after a proper wave, aim for the 25th or the 27th.
Rusty out.
