The Lowdown
Right, folks. Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the outlook is a tough one for the region. The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 68°F, but that’s where the good news starts and ends for a while. The first real chance at anything surfable doesn’t show up until the morning of Saturday the 22nd, and even then it’s a small one. We’re looking at a weak 2ft swell from the west with a short 8-second period, and the combined energy is a paltry 50 (weak energy). The wind is a light cross-offshore from the east, so conditions will be clean, but there’s barely any push. This is a beggars-can’t-be-choosers situation, and it’s the only half-decent moment in a long stretch of poor surf.
From Saturday afternoon right through until the end of the month, it’s a write-off. The wind is all over the shop—mostly cross-onshore or onshore, often fresh to strong—and the quality is consistently poor. There’s a bit of a spike in size around Tuesday the 25th afternoon with a short, lumpy 7ft swell, but it’s accompanied by a howling wind and a risk of thunderstorms. Not a session you’d bother with unless you’ve got a death wish or a kite.
The only glimmer in the entire 16-day window comes very late in the period. On the morning of Monday the 1st of September, the wind shifts to a clean cross-offshore from the north-northwest, with a surfable 4ft swell from the west-southwest (9-second period, moderate energy at 292). The conditions will be clean. It’s not a standout by any stretch, but given the desert of the preceding two weeks, it’s the best you’re going to get. The swell direction isn’t a perfect match for the optimum south-west, but it’s close enough. It’s a marginal call, but it’s the only call.
For the rest of the first week of September, the swell drops away again into tiny, weak waves with poor winds. There’s nothing to get excited about.
So, the honest truth: this is a rough patch. If you’re desperate for a paddle, the clean but tiny window on Saturday the 22nd morning is the only option, and the best of a bad bunch is the cleaner, slightly bigger morning on the 1st of September. Keep your eyes on the forecasts, because it tends not to stay this poor for long.
Rusty.
