The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the next couple of weeks for Guidel Plages. Honestly, I’ve got to be straight with you – the first week is a write-off. We’re looking at a solid 9-day stretch of absolute flatness or blown-out junk. From Monday the 24th all the way through to Tuesday the 1st of September, the conditions are just cruel. Wind is on it, cross-on it, or just plain strong, and the wave heights are pathetic. Not a single good window in that entire block. It’s the kind of run that makes you want to leave the boards in the car and just go for a walk.
Then, on Wednesday the 2nd of September, the morning finally throws us a bone. The wind drops to nothing – glassy, dead calm. We’ve got a tiny little 2ft swell from the west, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is weak (53), so it’s not going to be a memorable session, but it’s surfable and clean. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so don’t expect any surprises there. For a beginner wanting to get wet, this is your window. Just don’t expect much push.
Now, the real story is hiding at the very end of the forecast. I’m talking about the 7th of September, Monday afternoon, and then especially the 8th of September, Tuesday morning. The models are starting to tease something big. On Monday afternoon, we’ve got an 8ft swell from the WSW, and the period is short at 6 seconds, but there’s a lot of water moving – the combined energy hits 1101 (strong). The wind is light and cross-shore, so it’ll be messy but not completely unsurfable. The score is a 3.
But Tuesday morning, the 8th of September, is the one that has my heart racing. A 10ft swell from the WSW, and the period jumps to 15 seconds – that’s proper groundswell, very long period, the kind of energy that travels a long way. The combined energy is a massive 6516 (very strong). Wind is a light, gentle cross-shore. This is a point-break or reef setup kind of swell. For a beach-and-reef spot like Guidel Plages, that long period will make the waves stand up nicely, but it will also make them fat and straight on the beach. It’s a tricky one. The score is a 6, which is the best in the whole run. This is for experts only – 10ft is too big for beginners. It’s a promising but distant blip on the radar. Keep an eye on it, but don’t plan your life around it yet.
So, to sum it up: the first week and a half is a complete loss. The 2nd of September gives a tiny, clean, beginner-friendly morning. The standout is that Tuesday the 8th of September – a massive, long-period groundswell with light winds. That’s the one to watch, but it’s far out and uncertain.
Rusty.
