The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim start for the Guidel Plages region. We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing. From the 20th of July right through to the 28th, it’s pretty much a write-off. The swell is tiny, mostly around 0.7ft to 3ft, and the wind is all over the shop. We’ve got fresh offshore breezes early on, but the swell is just too weak to do anything with. The combined swell energy is barely registering, mostly in the single digits or low teens. It’s a real bummer, a full week of flat and poor conditions.
Now, we finally get a pulse of something around the 29th of July. Wednesday morning shows a bit of life with a 3ft swell from the west, with a period of 11 seconds. That’s a decent groundswell, and the wind is a clean cross-off from the NNE. The combined energy jumps to 287, which is a solid moderate energy. It’s still just a marginal surf forecast, but it’s the first real sign of hope. The afternoon stays clean with a cross-off, but the energy drops to 149. For a beach and reef setup like this, the longer period might make it a bit straight, but it’s the best we’ve seen.
The best of the whole window, and I mean the only real standout, is that Wednesday morning on the 29th. It’s not huge, just a clean 3ft from the west, but with that gentle offshore wind it’ll be glassy and clean. It’s the one morning to circle on the calendar.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. The 30th and 31st of July see a return to fresh offshore winds, but the swell drops back to 2ft – all flash, no substance. The first few days of August offer a similar story, with a brief moment on the 3rd of August where the morning shows a 2ft swell from the west with a gentle offshore, giving us a “surfable” rating. But it’s fleeting, and the afternoon turns choppy.
So, the honest truth? There’s one decent morning on the 29th of July. If you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s your window. Otherwise, it’s a long, quiet period.
Rusty.
