The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper surf at Guidel Plages. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak, messy surf ahead, and it’s going to take a while before we see anything worth getting excited about.
The first real window we can talk about doesn’t even show up until the 19th of August. That Wednesday afternoon, we’ve got a tiny 2ft swell rolling in from the west with a 10-second period. The energy is still weak (117), and while the wind swings offshore, it’s not exactly firing. It’s a clean little wave, but you’ll be on a longboard, not a shortboard. This is really just a taste of what could be, not the main event.
The following weekend is a write-off. There’s a bit of size on the 20th, but it’s messy as hell with strong cross-onshore winds, so we’re looking at chopped-up, lumpy conditions. Don’t even bother.
Now, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It’s a long way out, but the 1st of September is looking like the standout, maybe even the only real standout of this whole forecast. The models are showing a proper pulse of swell, with the height jumping up to 7ft by Tuesday afternoon, coming from the WNW, and the period stretching out to a solid 12 seconds. The energy reading is strong (2239), so there’s some real power behind it. But—and it’s a big but—the wind is forecast to be onshore, which will mess up the surface. It’ll be a powerful, lumpy, tricky wave that’s definitely only for the experienced crew. It’s promising, but it’s a long way out, so we keep our fingers crossed.
Before that, the 29th of August has a small window with a clean 4ft swell and offshore winds, but it’s still a marginal call. There are just so many blown-out days in between that this one is hard to get excited about. For the most part, expect a lot of small, weak surf. A lot of the time, the swell will be under 3ft with weak energy (even dipping into double digits), and the winds will keep it messy. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so a 3/2 wetsuit should be fine.
So, to sum it up: the next two weeks are mostly about patience. There are a few clean but tiny windows early on, but the one to really watch is that September 1st swell. It’s got the size and period to be a proper session, but the wind is the wildcard. Keep an eye on it, but don’t get your hopes up too high for the rest of the run.
This is Rusty, signing off. See you in the water when it’s worth it.
