The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty, checkin' in from the coast. The forecast ahead is a bit of a mixed bag, so let's get into it.

We're starting with a bit of a slow patch. The first real chance of a paddle comes on the afternoon of Wednesday, the 19th of August, at Guidel Plages. The swell is a weak 4ft from the WSW, with a short period of 5 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 152, but it's not gonna be firing. The wind is a light cross-offshore, which will keep the surface clean, but don't expect much push. It's a very ordinary session, but it's a start.

The next morning, Thursday the 20th, looks a bit bigger with a 4ft WSW swell, but the onshore wind will chop it up. The rest of the week and into the weekend is a real struggle. We've got a fair bit of swell, but the wind is blowing onshore or cross-onshore, ruining the quality. The water temperature is 68°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.

The pattern shifts for the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd of August. The swell drops to smaller, weaker stuff, but we get offshore winds. Saturday morning the 22nd is a standout: a clean 2ft from the west with a gentle offshore breeze from the NE. It's small, but clean. The same goes for Sunday morning the 23rd – 1.0ft from the WSW with a moderate offshore wind. These are the only two windows in the first week where the wind is right, and the surf is clean, but the size is tiny.

After that, it's a real dry spell. After the 23rd, there's a long gap of several days with no real recommendations. The surf stays small and the wind is poor. The next thing that looks interesting is a long way off, on Thursday the 27th of August. The morning shows a 8ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is a strong 999, and the wind is light and cross-shore. That's a lot of power, but it's a big, raw swell. An 8ft wave is for experienced surfers only, and the cross-shore wind won't give it that perfect grooming. It's a raw, powerful ocean.

The end of the month and into September is a real letdown. The swell is there, but the wind is just not cooperating. The only other thing to note is the morning of Saturday the 29th of August. The swell is a small 4ft from the SW, but it's glassy. No wind at all. The waves will be weak, but the surface will be like a mirror. The same goes for the morning of Sunday the 30th – 2ft from the SW and glassy. Tiny, clean, but not much to ride.

The very last session on the list is Wednesday morning the 2nd of September. A 3ft swell from the west, with a light cross-offshore wind. The energy is moderate at 178, but the period is short at 7 seconds. It's clean, but ordinary.

All in all, there's no true standout window here. The swell is inconsistent, and the wind is often wrong. The best bet is to keep an eye on the small, clean windows this weekend, or if you're a charger, that big, raw swell on the 27th of August. For now, it's a waiting game. The forecasts can change, and it tends not to stay this poor for long.

Rusty.
