The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for the Guidel-Plages stretch.
Honestly, looking at the next couple of weeks, it’s a bit of a tough slog. The pattern is messy, with a lot of poor conditions and onshore wind. The first real glimmer of anything decent doesn't show up until we get into the first week of September. There are a lot of days of just “meh” in between.
The first session worth mentioning is on Saturday the 22nd of August. The morning is your best bet. We’ve got a tiny little 2 ft swell sneaking in from the west, and the wind is a light cross-offshore breeze from the east-northeast at 6 mph. That’ll clean things up nicely. It’s not big, but it’s clean. The combined wave energy is weak (50). The period is a short 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit crumbly, but for a log or a funboard, you’ll get a few.
Then we hit a real dry spell. From Sunday the 23rd all the way through to the end of August, the surf is either too small, blown out, or both. The wind is a constant problem, mostly cross-on or onshore. There’s a bit of size towards the end of the month, like Thursday the 27th, with 5 ft to 7 ft swell, but the wind is straight onshore and strong, making it a lumpy, choppy mess. The combined wave energy gets up to moderate levels (493) but it’s not worth paddling out for. This stretch is more interesting for the kite surfers than us.
Now, the standout. Mark your calendars for Friday the 4th of September. This is the one. The morning session is looking like a proper treat. The swell should be a solid 5 ft from the west-southwest, with a combined energy of 309 (moderate). The period is a short 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit fat, but here’s the kicker: the wind is glassy. Absolutely dead calm from the east. It’s going to be a beautiful, clean, glassy morning. The water is about average for the time of year, around 67°F, so no need for a thick wetsuit. This is the morning to get out there and make the most of it. The rest of that day and the weekend after looks okay, but nothing beats that Friday morning glass.
Alright, so that’s the story. A few clean small waves early on, then a long wait, and a promising glassy day on the 4th of September. Keep an eye on the forecasts, because that one could turn into a real gem.
Rusty.
