The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for the next couple of weeks along this stretch of coast.
Honestly, I’m looking at a long, flat spell here. We’ve got nothing but tiny, messy slop for the next ten days or so. The first real chance of anything surfable doesn’t show up until Monday, July 27th, and even then, it’s marginal. That’s a solid ten-day gap with no real recommendations.
The water temp is sitting about average for the time of year, which is fine.
The only break on the cards is Guidel Plages. It’s a very consistent beach-and-reef setup that loves a good SW swell. But for the first week and a half, the energy is just pathetic. We’re seeing combined wave energy figures in the pathetic single digits and low teens, with swell heights barely scraping 0.7 ft to 1 ft. It’s just not happening.
Monday, July 27th is the first time we see a pulse, and it’s a small one. Early morning, we’ve got a 2 ft swell from the west, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy climbs to 105 (moderate), which is the first sign of life. But the real standout is the wind: it’s glassy. Glassy. That’s a huge positive for this spot. The waves will be clean, but small. It’s a true beginner-friendly size, and with the offshore wind direction (NE) being right for the optimum (SW), this is a genuine window of opportunity for a longboard or a foamie. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so you might not have it all to yourself, but it’s worth the paddle.
The rest of that week and into the first of August, the swell tries to pick up a bit, but the wind is almost always a cross-onshore, chopping it up. Later in the week, on Wednesday, July 29th, the swell jumps to 4 ft, but it’s accompanied by a fresh 22 mph cross-onshore wind. That’s a lot of wind on a beach-and-reef setup, and it’s gonna be a lumpy mess. That kind of energy (505 – strong) is more interesting for the kite surfers than for us.
The best of the best is that glassy Monday morning. It’s not a big day, but it’s the only clean one. After that, the swells get bigger, but the wind wrecks it. For a proper stand-out, we’re waiting for a clean day with a bigger swell.
Rusty, signing off.
