The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks. I’ll be honest, it’s a fairly quiet run for the most part, but there’s a little window of hope if you’re patient.
The first recommendation I’ve got is a bit of a long shot, and it’s not until Monday, the 27th of July. Up until then, it’s pretty much a write-off. We’ve got a solid gap of about ten days with nothing worth getting out of bed for. The swell is tiny, mostly under 1 ft and the wind is all over the shop, either onshore or too strong. There’s a few mornings with glassy or offshore conditions, like on the 23rd of July morning, but the swell is just 1 ft of weak, short-period stuff – it’s basically a lake.
Now, Monday morning the 27th of July, that’s the first time we see something that’s surfable, though it’s still very ordinary. Up at Guidel Plages, there’s a 3 ft swell from the WNW, with a period of 8 seconds. That’s a step up from the dribble we’ve had. The water temperature is 69°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a nice bonus. The wind is glassy, dead calm, so the waves will be clean. But honestly, the quality is still poor, just barely surfable. It’s not a stand-out.
The real highlight, if you can call it that, is a bit later. Look at the morning of Tuesday, the 28th of July. The swell is only 2 ft from the west, with a 9-second period, but the wind is a light, clean cross-offshore from the ESE. That’s the best you’re going to get – clean, small waves for a longboard or a foamie. The break is a beach and reef setup, very consistent, and it’s exposed to the swell. The optimum swell direction is SW, so that westerly is a bit off, but it’s all we’ve got.
After that, the 30th and 31st of July mornings offer similar small, clean conditions – 2 ft to 2 ft – but honestly, there’s no real punch. Crowds are sometimes a factor here, so expect a few locals out for the clean mornings.
Overall, there’s no solid swell on the horizon. The best bet is the clean, small mornings on the 27th, 28th, 30th, and 31st of July. Don’t expect anything over waist-high. It’s a waiting game.
